In Nengone (a language from the isla nd of Maré), Celenod means the clan of the Sea (Célé) and the clan of the Earth (Nod), both of which the musicians come from.

BiographY

elenod is one of the key bands from the NewCaledonian music charts. This young band formed in the early 2000s, has gradually asserted itself on international stages by offering a rather singular kaneka, guided by Moïse Wadra - one of the founders of this musical style and currently mentor of the group.

Favoring acoustic sounds - guitar and traditional percussions backed by a bass guitar and drums Celenod draws the energy of their music and their dances from Kanak culture. Strong rhythms, arpeggios, polyphony: these arrangements characterise the band. The singers' voices are supported by superb male choirs. On stage, they bring the audience into a dramatic stage performance where nothing is left to chance: vegetal fiber outfits, body painting, traditional songs and dances modernised by the musicians. They are also part of a selection of six artists nominated for the competition's export award. The international jury - made up of people from the arts and culture industries in Metropolitan Frances (Libération, France Inter, La Rochelle Francofolies festival, Rhône-Alpes branch of the Printemps de Bourges festival, etc.), Australia and New Zealand - all agree on the quality of their performance, even if the band doesn't win the much coveted trophy.

elenod est LE groupe qui cartonne à l’export. Depuis leur premier album en 2005, Co Weli, il se produit régulièrement sur les scènes des plus grands festivals world de la région, dont le fameux Womad, en Australie et en NouvelleZélande. Aujourd’hui, le groupe prépare de nouveau ses valises pour partir cette fois en métropole pour une longue tournée de deux mois des festivals d’été. Entretien avec le leader du groupe, Wayo Wagada. • Comment vous préparez vous à cette nouvelle tournée ? Nous utilisons tout le travail réalisé pour le Womad 2007 avec, en plus, de nouveaux morceaux et de nouvelles danses. Avant de partir, nous allons également enregistrer un album, le deuxième de Celenod, en autoproduction aux studios Skarabée. Il y aura 10 nouveaux titres, déjà joués sur scène mais jamais enregistrés.

• Comment expliquez vous votre succès à l’export ? On a pas d’explication. Tout a commencé quand le directeur du Womad a flashé sur notre premier album, depuis nous sommes demandés un peu partout. Moi qui n’aime pas beaucoup voyager ! C’est une lourde responsabilité de représenter le pays à l’extérieur, ce n’est pas facile de partir, on est loin et il faut porter haut le drapeau de notre musique. • En général comment se passent vos concerts à l’étranger ? Le public étranger est toujours très intéressé par ce que l’on fait, notre jeu de guitare, notre rythme. Il danse mais il reste très intrigué parce qu’il n’a jamais vu ça. Ils viennent nous toucher après le concert comme si on était des martiens (rires) ! Au Womad, nous avons joué la première fois un vendredi, lorsque nous sommes revenus jouer le lendemain, des gens du public s’étaient mis à nos couleurs, le

rouge et avaient des plumes sur la tête! En conclusion, notre musique a une vraie force qu’il faut conserver, il ne faut pas rentrer dans le moule international. • Où en êtes-vous par rapport à votre musique aujourd’hui ? Nos premiers morceaux, je les ai enregistrés avec mes cousins, dans mon champs de légumes avec 2 guitares et un bé ! C’était «Co Weli». Ma génération à l’époque faisait du reggae, moi je ne m’y reconnaissais pas, je suis pas jamaïquain, alors je suis parti sur le kaneka. J’ai travaillé 6-7 ans ma musique avant d’enregistrer. Mon trophée de la musique en 2005, c’est comme un diplôme pour moi ! • Pourquoi avoir choisi l’autoproduction pour ce second album ? Nous, nous avons choisi l’autoproduction, mais j’encourage tous les artistes à enregistrer, chacun doit s’exprimer à sa façon ! On a un grand besoin de promotion, de nous montrer à l’extérieur, de faire évoluer notre musique sinon on va tous faire la même chose. C’est le moment de bouger, les artistes doivent aussi se prendre en charge. On a une musique, un message. Lorsque je joue devant des étrangers, c’est ce que l’on dit, on a notre son, notre musique, notre culture. Lorsque l’on monte sur scène, c’est pour représenter notre peuple, avec un message à l’auditoire : «Je suis venu vous dire ma tristesse, là bas, chez moi».
