The Itinerary This challenge takes place in south-eastern Zambia finishing at the Victoria Falls. Zambia was known as northern Rhodesia from 1911, but renamed Zambia at independence in 1964. It is a wonderfully diverse country with spectacular natural beauty and a friendly culture. Source of the mighty Zambezi River, Zambia’s most famous and spectacular feature is the magnificent Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world, at 2kms wide and 103 metres deep. It was named in 1855 by Dr Livingstone for Queen Victoria.

Day 1: 12 July

Overnight flight from London to Lusaka

Day 2: 13 July

Arrival and transfer to start point at Kafue

On arrival we will be transferred by road to the River Motel in Kafue, approx 1 hour from the airport. Here we will have our bike fitting and a briefing on the challenge to come.

Day 3: 14 July

Kafue – Mazabuka

approx 73km

We start the challenge as we set off towards Mazabuka, Zambia’s sweetest town & home to the country’s sugar plantations. The terrain is a mix of tar roads & good dirt roads and we cycle past local villages, baobab trees and plenty of sugar plantations. Today will give us a great introduction to the challenge and to this beautiful country.

Day 4: 15 July

Mazabukla – Monze approx 94km

Today we continue south towards Monze. This is a challenging but fantastic day. Our first 20km is on tarred road but we then take a more adventurous route off road. From here the roads vary from good dirt roads to slightly sandy making it challenging cycling. However, this does take us through real rural Africa! There are many winding tracks through countless villages where we meet the friendly Zambian people. We arrive in Monze and check in to our hotel, the Sunset Lodge.

Day 5: 16 July

Monze – Choma approx 105km

Our destination today is the market town of Choma. Today is all on road to give us a rest from the dirt tracks but the distance means that we can’t relax just yet! We reach Choma where we overnight at Koso Lodge in small chalets. Antelope are often spotted nearby.

4

Day 6:

17 July

Choma – Kalomo

approx 78km

Another challenging day as we tackle 70kms of off-road. The dirt roads are generally in good condition with just a few small sandy sections. Again, we pass countless small villages, seeing rural Africa at its best, as yet untouched by tourism.

Day 7:

18 July

Kalomo – Livingstone approx 69 km

The final stretch today as we tackle the 69km to Livingstone, our ultimate destination. We start the day with an early transfer to a lodge 70km outside Kalomo where we have breakfast before setting off. Although this last ride is on tarred road there are potholes to negotiate as we head into Livingstone. We cycle straight through the town and end our challenge at the Victoria Falls. What a spectacular end to the week! Here we will have lunch before we have a short 5km cycle back to our hotel, the Waterfront Hotel, where we enjoy fantastic sunsets as we celebrate our achievements. Tonight there will be a special meal held in a restaurant in Livingstone.

Day 8:

19 July

We transfer to Livingstone airport for an internal flight to Lusaka. Today is our project visit. We learn more about the palliative care work that EMMS International is supporting with a visit to the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka

Day 9:

20 July

Return flight from Lusaka to London.

Day 10: 21 July

Fly to UK

Arrive London. Dependent on flight schedules.

N.B.: This is a complex itinerary & may be subject to change

Healthcare challenges in Zambia EMMS International has been delivering health care to some of the world’s poorest communities since 1841. Our vision is a just world in which all people have access to good quality healthcare.

‘It’s estimated that 180,000 people in Zambia require palliative care, and yet only a fraction of them receive the care they need’.

Too many Zambians are suffering from devastating illnesses, such as cancer, largely on their own and need specialist help and care. 18,000 adults and children in Central Province Zambia need palliative care, but only 2 hospices provide it. Over recent years, while the need for palliative care has increased, its provision in Zambia has diminished as hospices have closed Severe illness can devastate families. It leaves loved ones in intolerable pain and it can shatter poor households’ income and expenditure.

Every Life Matters in Zambia Your sponsorship will go towards supporting Zambia to get back on track, affording around 9000 people the pain relief, respect, and dignity they deserve. You can help us bolster Zambia’s palliative care services by increasing the number of rural, remote health centres and posts that offer home-based palliative care that can lengthen and improve lives. Your involvement would mean that you can help bring about long-term change for Zambia including helping: • • • •

9,000 people to receive free pain relief and home-based palliative care, giving 45,000 family members peace of mind, respite from caring and time to work. Provide a 15-seat minibus ambulance with stretcher for Ranchhod Hospice, for outreach & patient transport. A diploma or degree that enables Zambians to become specialists in delivering palliative care to thousands of people. A training course allowing healthcare workers to bring care right into communities.

We believe that our palliative care projects reduce such unbearable consequences. More than simply easing pain, palliative care extends lives.

Thank you for your support.

Visa & Travel Insurance • British passport holders need a visa to enter Zambia. You can get a visa from the Zambian High Commission in London before you travel (£35 / $50US). We will advise you on this in advance. A ten-year passport, valid for at least six months after entry into Zambia, is essential. • You must be insured to take part - either through a company of your choice or the Classic Challenges recommended policy. You will need to provide proof of your insurance 8 weeks prior to the challenge. Staying On It is possible to stay on in Zambia after the challenge, subject to availability. Please contact us for more information. What is provided? Return flights from the UK to Zambia, accommodation, transfers, full medical support, experienced guides, support staff, bikes, water and all meals except lunch on day 9. We will invoice you for this cost at the point when your tour cost is due (8 weeks before our departure date). Currently these are £352 (March 18) but are subject to change. In addition, you will need to budget for personal travel insurance, any optional tours, gratuities and spending money.

Kick start your fundraising! Each participant on the challenge is committed to raise at least £3,200 in sponsorship to support us in improving health care in Zambia. We recognise that for some, this is a fairly challenging goal, but we are confident that this is a target you can reach and even exceed. Fundraising events It is likely that a large proportion of your sponsorship will come from sponsorship donations. However fundraising events are a fantastic way of augmenting your sponsorship total and raising the profile of what you are undertaking and the charity. Better still, get someone else to organise these for you!
