Every Life Matters The journey to show that
Last year, you helped 411,803 poor and vulnerable people and showed that their lives matter. Kesnary is 80 years old. A remarkable age for someone in Malawi, one of the world’s poorest countries. However, she is one of a growing number of people for whom living longer also brings the prospect of prolonged sickness and pain. Kesnary has cervical cancer. The bleeding has been so severe, she sits on the stoop of her small lakeside home, too weak to move. At times it leaves her unconscious. This is only compounded by a chronic lack of food, relying on porridge and fish provided by her family. It is a six-hour hike over the hills to access a hospital, or a two-hour boat journey and further 2 hours by road. With limited resources and such poor health, the journey is unaffordable and often unbearable, leaving Kesnary without essential pain relief.
Thanks to your support, specialist nurses visit Kesnary at home. They make sure her later years are not spent in hunger and pain. In the past year your support has brought a new ambulance boat to Lake Malawi, to reach people like Kesnary when they need it most. It’s begun the training of more healthcare workers and it will soon begin expanding this specialist care to more remote communities. Improved care restores Kesnary’s quality of life and relieves the burden of care on her family, allowing them to return to their work as fishermen and to caring for their own household. You’re showing all of them that their lives matter.
