s we all take time to remember Julie Brougham, we will each have our own special memory.

Without doubt Julie was a shining star in our sport, inspiring us both at home and from abroad. Horse of the Year Show, National Championships, Dressage by the Lake, Aachen, the Olympics and World Championships. Everyone will have their favorite moment captured in their mind. Julie was hugely respected as an international athlete equestrian athlete, probably more so than she ever gave herself credit for. The tributes in international publications and messages from international judges and athletes are testament to this. Her focus in the competition arena was formidable, but her engaging smile when she knew Steiny had done her proud was something else.

For those of us privileged to be judged by Julie, we could count on encouragement and integrity. She knew firsthand the challenges of training and was always happy to share her vast knowledge, seen from the judges box. I remember well at the 2017 Young Rider Championships how excited the youngsters were to meet her when she came to talk to them about her Rio Olympics experience. She wore her Olympic kit making it such a real experience for them. To be part of her support team at the FEI World Games was an honour and an experience which I will always truly appreciate. Thank you Julie for being such a true-life inspiration and setting new standards and goals for others to chase.

It is with much sadness ESNZ and Dressage NZ acknowledge the passing of Julie Brougham who courageously battled the greatest test until Thursday 9th December 2021.

ulie dared to dream during a sixty three year love affair with horses. She was totally inspirational in everything she strived for and achieved. She was a fellow athlete, a ESNZ High Performance Squad member, a team member at local, national, World Championship and Olympic level. She was a highly respected trainer, coach, mentor, List A Dressage Judge and loyal friend to many. Julie ably trained a number of horses to Grand Prix level including Top Gun, JK Supersonic, Gymstar One, and Vom Feinsten. She won ESNZ individual and team titles on Vom Feinsten, Kinnordy Glogau, Furst Fellini and Glenturret and the FEI Dressage World Challenge Prix St Georges on JK Supersonic.

At international level Julie represented New Zealand at Aachen CHIO and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, followed by the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon on her beloved Vom Feinsten (Steiny). Her passion for all things dressage and the vast knowledge she generously shared with others will be a continuing legacy for riders who dream to follow and emulate the new standards she and Steiny set for New Zealand. Messages from across the equestrian world signify the huge respect that Julie commanded internationally.

QUALIFICATION UPDATES BATES NZ DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS 24 -26 March 2022 Taupo National Equestrian Centre

The Bates National Championships event will run over three days, Thursday to Saturday with the Grand Prix Freestyle and Young Dressage Horse Finals featuring in the stadium on Saturday night. Subject to FEI approval, the event will include a CDI3*, CDIY, and CDIP. There will be Open Championships for all levels plus with Bronze and Silver Championships for Preliminary to Advanced Medium. The North Island Super 5 League Series qualifiers will be featured on the first day of the event with prizegiving held Friday evening. (The finals will now be held at the North Island Championships in May) The full schedule will be published on EvoEvents in December and entries will open on 4th January 2022.

REVISED ELIGIBILITY: Owing to Covid restrictions in the first part of the season for a number of areas, the Dressage NZ Board has approved the following amended qualification criteria to increase qualification opportunities for riders affected by lockdowns.

The FEI Dressage World Challenge never fails to deliver the ultimate experience for athletes on the pathway to international competition. The event is run under FEI rules with some modifications to reflect the global development concept which has stood the test of time for fortyone consecutive years. Although the Covid pandemic severely impacted the number of participating nations in 2020 and 2021, New Zealand athletes riders benefitted from the FEI dispensation to permit the Ground Jury to be comprised of home-based judges. On the selection process, Margs said “The task selecting this year’s team was made more difficult through circumstances which meant many of the horses had little current form and the selectors had not had the chance to observe them extensively in the competition environment.

he competition got underway with the ten-minute arena and full main arena familiarization for all combinations followed by the horse inspection. Chair of the Ground Jury, Sue Hobson was very complimentary following the inspection where Exclusively Yours vouchers, sponsored by Anna Gale and valued at $250 each for Best Presented Youth & Senior were at stake. Very deserved winners were Paige Fitzgerald (Youth) and Sandy Houston (Senior I). “We were very impressed with the continuing improvement in the standard of horses and their presentation in the trot up. It is very “telling” when looking at the physical

There were some exciting youth riders and young riders competing at the higher levels that we were able to give the experience of being a team member. They acquitted themselves wonderfully well as shown in the results. Owing to multiplying factors determined by the FEI and associated with the different levels, conditioning of the horses, which clearly shows the correct muscle development and way of training. Practice was evident when athletes were leading their horses and ponies, and the execution of the turn and being able to present them to the FEI veterinarian. Attention to the finer details paid off, with higher scores being achieved as a result, particularly in the Youth class” Sue noted afterwards.

The FEI Youth & Senior I Classes are judged using a different format, with the Judge at E judging the collective marks for quality and the Judge at C assessing the technical performance. The four quality marks are assessed on Riders Seat & Position, Effectiveness of Aids, Precision & General Impression. No collective marks are awarded in the technical section. resulting in Anna Terrell’s imported 9 year old warmblood stallion (Furst Love / Sir Donnerhall) ridden by Anna Gale earning the runner up spot. contest between twelve year old Paige Fitzgerald on the Elementary level 148cm English riding pony Apsley Backchat Kid and last year’s winner fourteen Mikayla Wildermoth this time riding Don Douglas CFH, a 167.5cm warmblood competing at Advanced level. Mikalya was slightly ahead on the technical score from Suzanne Inglis at C, and Paige ahead by 2.5% on the quality mark from Sue Hobson at E giving Apsley Backchat Kid the win by less than 1%. Both these riders come from a showing background and are now really making their mark in a different arena. Paige has her own philosophy for improvement “I look at my test sheets to see what I can work on and get better at” The Astek Stud FEI Senior I Class also equated to NZ Elementary and also judged separately for technical and quality marks. Sandy Houston and Southwell Razzmataz (8 year old, 170cm, Holsteiner x TB by Ramirez) scored well in the quality section, (75%) for an overall win. Sandy’s own key tips clearly paid off “Don’t take things too seriously allow yourself and the host to make mistakes don’t be in a hurry and stay on your own journey”. Little separated the top six combinations in the technical section

The Classic Equestrian Senior II Class equated to NZ Advanced Medium with single flying changes and this was incredibly close with just 0.3% separating first to third. It was Canterbury’s Paula Hippolite on HV Wolfetone (aka Jim), the Hillview Sporthorses bred Irish X by Coalmans Touch who won the rug. “I’m totally speechless - that’s really not like me! ...Jim is just so cool! ...it’s our first fancy rug in Dressage so to say I’m pretty chuffed is an understatement” Paula appreciated the judges review after the event. “I took all of what Sue (Hobson) told me and put it into practice for my first test at Canterbury Championships - I felt I did a much better test.” Six combinations lined up in

This combination is relatively new to the FEI levels but Sandy’s goal to ride at Grand Prix and her commitment to good training principles combined with Rocky’s wonderful temperament and trainability prevailed on the day. It was great to see Jenny Scotter back competing at FEI level for runner up. Amelia French was in third place for a team score having her eight month old daughter along as part of her support team. Canterbury young riders took every opportunity to learn from their schoolmasters and the Challenge experience, Gemma Lewis and Jorja Dann filling fourth & fifth placings respectively. The feature class, the Livamol Intermediate I was reduced to two starters following the late withdrawal of Sophie Griffith & Wonderment. Sophie raced home to tend to a precious foaling by her previous FEI level mare and was rewarded with a lovely colt foal. However, the two young rider combinations remaining gave notice that our sport is well placed for the future, both showing the value of learning the trade on horses that know the work. This in no way undervalues their performance - as riders they must learn the work too. All credit to sixteen year old student Meg Johnston from Geraldine who produced a very competent and sympathetic ride on BL About Time for 68.8%. Meg is one of the youngest, if not the youngest NZL Int I Challenge winner since the

inception of the competition and only just old enough to ride in the Challenge at this level. This combination was chased hard by runner up, seventeen year old Giselle Conway riding the imported (AUS) thirteen year old mare Springfield Passion Hit. After the event Meg said “We had a very exciting ride in the Livamol Int I. Harry gave me an awesome feeling and it was a really relaxed test so I was super happy with the improvements that we have made. Thank you so much to Livamol, judges, officials, and organisers of the World Dressage Challenge. It has been an amazing experience and we have had so much fun.” Dressage NZ sincerely thanks all the sponsors and supporters of this event the officials and volunteers from Dressage Canterbury who made it possible. ood luck to Victoria Wall who has decided the time is right to head off to Europe with two horses and for good measure, her eldest son Bax. “To train and perhaps ultimately to relocate to Germany to compete has always been on the to do list but when the boys were so little it was not the right time.” said Victoria. Initially they will be based at the Westphalian stables near Munster. It’s a well located establishment and the plan is to train with Stefan Wolff and Sebastian Heinze. Sebastian is the German under 25 trainer and was Helen Langehanenburg’s trainer for many years. “I’d like to keep control of how much I train and manage the horses. I want to make sure I end up with someone who really fits me and my horses. It is so hard from here as we don’t know the trainers. I really think it’s important to not try and reinvent the wheel to find someone who will help you build on what you’ve already achieved. The timing is perfect now for a trip because Lou (Letty Lei EDH) is feeling great and in her prime, and the stallion Furst Hit EDH is five and just getting going. I am hoping to compete him in Young Dressage Horse competitions in Germany and CDI's with Lou.

As part of the Dressage NZ funding support programme, Dressage Wairarapa received both rider and venue development funding. The first of three masterclass and rider clinics with local Olympian Kallista Field was held in early November.

SOLWAY SHOWGROUNDS ARENA UPGRADE In addition to having hosted North Island Championships and the FEI Dressage World Challenge, the iconic Solway showgrounds in Masterton is the home to both Dressage Wellington and Dressage Wairarapa premier league events and a host of Wairarapa training and local events throughout the year. All four all weather surfaces and the warmup arena have been revitalised with the addition of Treadlite which has resulted in great feedback from riders. FEI level riders in particular are enthusiastic about the prospect of another venue in the lower north island offering an all-weather surface which is favourable for horse soundness and good performances. Dressage New Zealand contributed $15,000 to the upgrade which represented approximately 75% of the total required with Dressage Wairarapa funding the remaining balance.

he event was a huge success with over forty spectators and riders taking part. The

feedback has been very positive with many indicating that they would like Kallista to come back again. Kallista thoroughly enjoyed the experience too, offering to bring her own horse Felix Westfalia FE, now training at Grand Prix level, to do a demonstration should a further opportunity arise. The aim of the clinic was to help encourage, empower and enable our members and wider equestrian community into dressage giving them the tools they need and knowledge how to apply these at all dressage levels to succeed. The focus was on the foundations of dressage and the training scale and learning to ride the horse from behind. It

was great to see vast improvements across all riders and horses by the end of their lessons. The clinic commenced with four demonstration riders riding at levels between preliminary and advanced medium. Kallista worked with these riders while explaining to the spectators what they were working on, and why. The demonstration lesson costs were funded by Dressage Wairarapa. Six private lessons were also held and several spectators remained to watch all or some of the individual lessons. The cost of the individual lessons was subsidised through the Dressage NZ funding scheme. Thank you Dressage NZ!

SO WHAT IS LAMINITIS AND HOW CAN I PREVENT IT? Following on from last month when we discussed how to recognise grass based Laminitis, Robyn and the team at Hygain/ Mitavite NZ discuss Laminitis and the more acute condition Founder, two words that create anxiety for many horse owners. Although quite prevalent, especially with our horses being predominantly grass based the diseases are not well understood which puts horses and ponies at risk. It’s important to learn the risk factors and know how to manage and prevent laminitis.

aminitis is the inflammation of the laminae in the horse’s hoof. The laminae are tiny finger-like structures that interlock and secure the coffin bone to the hoof wall and keep the bone in place. Although the exact cause of laminitis remains unknown, it is thought that if your horse’s blood flow to these laminae is disrupted through laminitis risk factors, inflammation occurs.

This weakens the laminae structures which interferes with the hoof wall to bone bond making the laminae unable to hold the coffin bone in place. If laminitis is reoccurring or left untreated, the horse’s weight can become too great and may interfere with the bond between the two sets of interdigitating laminae in the front (dorsal) part of the hoof. When this occurs, Laminitis becomes the more severe condition, Founder. Founder is where the weight of the horse pushes the coffin bone towards the ground and the pull of the deep digital flexor tendon rotates the coffin bone. In some cases, the coffin bone will protrude through the sole of the hoof, which is called solar prolapse.

RISK FACTORS • Pasture induced Laminitis. A rich spring or autumn flush, stressed grasses and high fructan pastures are some examples of circumstances that can result in an overload of sugar in your horse’s digestive tract, which can ultimately lead to laminitis. There have also been links in overseas research between mycotoxin activity in pasture and laminitis.

• Nutrition induced Laminitis. Some horses and ponies may be predisposed to Laminitis in response to an excessive intake of Non Structural Carbohydrates (Starch and Sugar). Starch found in grains such as oats, barley, corn and cereal based pellets may negatively impact on the sensitive bacteria in the large intestine and result in a bout of laminitis.

• Obesity is another main risk factor of laminitis. An overweight horse may experience unnecessary strain on their heart, lungs and joints, as well as a susceptibility to developing laminitis.

• Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). Horses with EMS are insulin resistant, meaning they are unable to metabolise carbohydrates normally, making them prone to laminitis.

• Insulin resistance. Horses with insulin resistance are not able to properly manage insulin, which can induce laminitis.

• Cushing’s Disease. An abnormality of the pituitary gland results in the over release of the cortisol hormone, which can impact the level of insulin sensitivity and ultimately increase the risk of laminitis.

• Hoof concussion. Some believe that working on a hard surface for

a prolonged period of time may traumatize the hoof laminae, which can be a risk factor for Laminitis.

• Toxaemia, (also known as blood poisoning) can result from many other conditions such as colic diarrhoea and can lead to the onset of laminitis.

• Response to some medications. Although it remains unproven, it is thought that some horses may react adversely to some medications, or the prolonged use of some medications such as corticosteroids. This may lead to arteries in the hooves becoming constricted, which could make a horse more susceptible to laminitis.

• Stressful events. When a horse is stressed, corticosteroid hormones are released and may lead to the arteries in the hooves becoming constricted. Some believe that this may also make a horse more susceptible to laminitis.

MANAGEMENT & PREVENTION To manage and prevent Laminitis, it’s extremely important to limit pasture turnout and control the consumption of sugar and starch. Key management and prevention recommendations include:

• Restricted access to grass pasture to later at night or early morning as sugar content is higher from 10am to late afternoon. The exception to this rule is in frosty conditions where sugar content may still be very high early in the morning. To prevent excessive intake during limited access consider the use of an appropriately fitted grazing muzzle.

• Limit the size of the available pasture by use of temporary fencing to create small paddocks.

• Avoid high sugar and starch diets. Avoid feeds high in cereal grains (i.e. maize, barley, oats), as well as lush spring/autumn pasture.

• Focus on fibre. Much of the hay available for horse owners is high in sugar and as such can be as much of a concern as pasture. Source a lower sugar hay or forage substitute such as Rye Grass straw, Barley Straw, or any hay that is declared and tested with a low sugar content (less than 10%). Soaking hay for 30 minutes will

help lower sugar levels by at least a third.

• Do not starve laminitis prone horses. This restricts the horse of all nutrients and is one of the worst things you could do. Horses recovering from laminitis still require essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals to repair the damage caused by a laminitis episode and for their general wellbeing. At a bare minimum your horse requires approximately 1.5% of their own body weight as roughage.

• Provide a low starch concentrate to ensure your horse has all the essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals necessary to assist in repairing damage caused by Laminitis. It’s important for you to adjust your horse’s diet to decrease the risk of further harm and to begin the recovery process. After starting up the business in Southland five years ago, the pair moved back north to Reporoa (20 minutes north of Taupo) to be closer to family this year. The couple are both keen riders, with four horses between them. Tracie is also a recently listed dressage judge. She has one more session of shadow-judging to complete before upgrading to F judge status.

“We won’t get into serious competition ourselves this season,” she says, “but I’ll continue with my judging, and we’ll enjoy our horses.” While Grant and Tracie remember riding together at Pony Club in their earlier years, it was only in 2016 that they met again, after a long hiatus from riding. As Tracie puts it: “Life happened!” She got back in the saddle again ten years ago, and Grant began riding again when they got together. We’re

Tracie already has her eye on one of the flat paddocks for an arena. “My dad drives a digger, so it’s all sorted!” With the current situation making trade stands an uncertain opportunity at shows due to lack of spectators, Tracie says the business has moved more toward online promotion and (along with so many others) coming up with other ways of getting their name out there in front of people. ABOUT CARLOS? He is an escapologist….so I have to secure him quite well in his stable. He has a thing for caps, zippers, or anything shiny on your clothing, they often don’t survive him playing with them.

HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR SPORT? I have a full-time career, but I also end up having to sell some of my favourite horses

BEST PERFORMANCE? This is a hard question… Sometimes what felt like the best performance doesn’t necessarily get you the best result… but I think a ‘best result’ is anytime the test felt easy, that the horse stayed in front of me, on my seat and aids, and maintained the rhythm and balance in the collection feels like a best test to me, a few little blips don’t really mean much in the big picture of things. MOST CURRENT ACHIEVEMENT? Being named on the Dressage NZ Big Tour Squad. It’s always a huge honour to have your achievements and abilities recognised and to have your sport think you may have the possibility of representing your country one day.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN DRESSAGE? I evented until my late 20’s, but even then I was called the ‘Dressage Queen’. In 2000, I tipped off a young horse at a horse trial,

breaking my back, ribs and sacral, so decided to switch to a ‘safer’ discipline…. the irony is, the most talented dressage bred horses for the top sport, are often quite feral as young horses, and in a way, more risky than eventing was. I think I am braver now, and ride more tricky horses, than ever.

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO IMPROVE? Doing the best by my horse is what motivates me to be a better rider every day. I am constantly self-reflecting and have been told I am quite hard on myself, but if I am not honest, (sometimes brutally so) with myself, then I will just rest on where I am at, and that is NOT how you progress. When I ride well, my horses are so much happier, they try harder, they give me more, so that drives me every ride…to be the best I can, every time I get on.

HOW DO YOU PUT BACK INTO DRESSAGE? I am the Vice President of the NZ Warmblood Association and dedicated to seeing the NZ bred horses recognised on the world stage, but of course, particularly dressage horses. My isolation

geographically, and my job, limit my ability to be involved in working groups or committees too much, but I am always keen to write or do any job required at shows when time allows if I am competing.

FUTURE GOALS? My goal is to keep producing young horses up the grades to Grand Prix doing a better job of it every time. I think so long as I do that, then my dreams of producing horses that are seriously competitive at this level, and ultimately, capable of representing my country and footing it internationally can be achieved.

THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE DEVELOPED IN DRESSAGE? More training support for riders on Squads. There are very high standards/qualifications set for riders to be able to represent their country and there is not a lot of support for them to achieve these results.

YOUR KEY TIP FOR OTHER RIDERS? It’s not an easy sport, don’t get disheartened when it doesn’t go right, enjoy the journey, love your horse, and have fun finding out what you don’t know!

BREEDING: By Status Quo x San Rubin 11/ Sandro Hit ABOUT SUZIE Q: She looks and behaves like a super model - she is a drama queen!. She is a Merit classified mare with NZWBA and achieved a recognition award from them. She is preparing for her first Prix St Georges start.

HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR SPORT? With careful choices mostly. Holidays don’t feature unless going to a show counts! Peter and I coach and also raise beef cattle and run a small Bed and Breakfast. I am not sure our breeding business funds my sport, but we have certainly got to a point where we are riding some super home bred horses. So the vision 15 years ago has enabled us to be riding a team of horses now that would have required a large amount of money to go and buy.

BEST PERFORMANCE? I am a very harsh critic of myself and honestly I don’t think there is one worth singling out. I have many performances that I am proud of mostly because there is a training story behind them, they mean a lot to me.

MOST CURRENT ACHIEVEMENT? Sticking with and working out another way with RM Suzie Q - She isn’t easy but she keeps me honest and reminds me we have come a

long way. I get a huge amount of satisfaction from not giving up.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN DRESSAGE? I have ridden track work, evented and show jumped but I guess I always loved the training side and as I got older I gravitated more and more towards dressage. Let’s face it, it's addictive.

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO IMPROVE? So so many things - but I think it’s just a hunger to try to do it better every day - the more we know the more we know we need to know. It is a wonderful sport because if you gain motivation by improvement and gaining knowledge then it really is a lifelong passion. I am inspired by good training and harmony. So as a coach I try to find answers and tools for riders.

HOW DO YOU PUT BACK INTO DRESSAGE? I am on the Bay of Plenty Dressage committee and do the stable manager job at the Premier League show. Peter and I have been on the NEC Taupo Committee for about six years, so we do a fair bit there as we are passionate about that wonderful facility. We do a demo discussion day every year for Rotorua Dressage as a

fund raiser, I have been the NI Riders rep (on the Dressage NZ committee) and I steward a bit as well. Recently I was part of the Dressage NZ Young Dressage Horse subcommittee.

FUTURE GOALS? To keep improving, keep learning, keep challenging myself and as a result being able to help more horses and riders.

THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE DEVELOPED IN DRESSAGE? I would like for Arena Familiarization to be more constructive when possible. It is so valuable to be able to ride horses in arenas at walk trot and canter and help develop their confidence and give combinations every opportunity to develop from the competition environment. If we could develop a 'can do' attitude around that I think it would be very much appreciated by riders and really beneficial to the horses.

YOUR KEY TIP FOR OTHER RIDERS? Volunteer, keep learning and be honest to yourself and your horse. It’s a tough sport but also an amazing life. Most of the best riders in the world haven’t won medals or represented their country - learn from every experience.

HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR SPORT? I have a fantastic sponsor Canterbury Equestrian who has been supporting me for many years.

BEST PERFORMANCE? My Grand Prix test at Nationals 2020 with Profile. He did an amazing test, and I was very proud of him. MOST CURRENT ACHIEVEMENT? Winning the 2020 Prix St Georges at the Livamol FEI Dressage World challenge in the NZ Section and also placing first in the world ranking with KP Dexter.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN DRESSAGE? I started out as an eventer and showjumper and then moved into dressage in my twenties. I rode my first ever dressage horse Willowbrook to Grand Prix and he was the first horse to reach Grand Prix in Marlborough.

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO IMPROVE? I enjoy watching my horses develop through the stages to Grand Prix. I am also driven by training with my inspirational coach Vanessa Way.

HOW DO YOU PUT BACK INTO DRESSAGE? I am the Dressage Marlborough area delegate to the Dressage NZ committee. I coach full time and have been head coach many times for pony clubs in Marlborough.

FUTURE GOALS? Keep improving, keep learning keep challenging myself and as a result being able to help more horses and riders. I really enjoy the challenge of competition, so I have goals in that arena too for sure.

THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE DEVELOPED IN DRESSAGE? I would love to see South Island showcasing a major dressage event that includes a CDI. It would be great to see more live streaming at dressage events.

YOUR KEY TIP FOR OTHER RIDERS? Find a coach that creates a positive environment for your training. Dressage is full of ups and downs… Never give up.

DRESSAGE YOUTH COUNCIL MEMBERS APPOINTED Thirteen applications were received to fill three vacancies on the Dressage NZ Youth Council.

“A number of years ago I was lucky to have a wonderful pony that gave me the ‘dressage bug’. Dressage is now my biggest passion. This season I will be competing in the young rider/small tour on Neversfelde Rupert and at novice/ elementary on my pony. I am looking forward to challenging myself and improving as a rider and achieving some goals along the way! Outside of dressage and university I work part-time and this season I am head coach for my pony club, which I am very excited about! I am super excited to be part of the Dressage NZ Youth council and help to develop the youth dressage culture within our

sport. Fostering relationships and connections between young riders and helping them to reach their potential as riders and as people is something I am very passionate about. I look forward to bringing this to the council. There are a number of awesome young riders out there who I would love to see come together to create a tightknit community. I would also love to see the number of young riders coming into our sport grow and help generate some great initiatives to help encourage this. I am very excited to work with the awesome team of Alyssa, Lucarne, Meila, Meg and Piper and see where we can take youth dressage in NZ!”

MEG JOHNSTON (SOUTH CANTERBURY) Meg Johnston (16) is based in Geraldine, South Canterbury. She has been riding since she was five, beginning registered dressage with her pony Little Blessing, who she trained and competed to FEI Pony Level. MEILA PICARD (NELSON) Meila Picard (19) is very excited for the opportunity to be one of the new members of the Dressage NZ Youth Council. “I cannot wait to combine my love for Dressage with my love for growth and development, not just for myself but the entire sport. Coming from a non-horsey family I began riding at the age of seven and was lucky enough to get my first pony when I was eleven. Since then my love for the sport has grown immensely. Currently in work I have My Mojo Man, a 14yr old Swedish Warmblood x Hanoverian and my very exciting rising five-year-old Zisco (by Zonik). I finished school last year so have spent this year balancing riding and studying a Bachelor of Environment and Society at Lincoln University. My ultimate goal is to be able to compete at the highest level of dressage alongside a career that will not only help fund me, but hopefully allow me to create meaningful change. I hope that through the Youth Council we can work together as a community to implement positive and lasting change within the sport. To not only allow our most talented riders to flourish but the grassroots too. I am very excited to be a part of that mission”

Briar Herries is a seven-year-old from Gisborne, where she lives with Austin, her brother, and their parents, Erika and Dan. She attends Makauri School, where she enjoys playing rugby and soccer, and participating in athletics alongside her equestrian endeavours. HOW DID IT FEEL TO BE AN EQUESTRIAN SPORTS GAMECHANGER? It felt really great, I was able to help someone feel a little bit better when they were feeling down, so I was happy I could help!

WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION? HOW DID YOU GET INTO RIDING? When I was four years old I asked Mum (Erika) if I could go for a riding lesson, which she said yes to! I loved it straight away and wanted a pony of my own, which Mum was happy with as she used to ride herself.

WHICH PONIES WILL YOU COMPETE WITH THIS SEASON? I have two ponies that I will be competing with this season, Diago and Boots. Valrosa Indian Summer (Diago) will be my main pony, whilst Valrosa Exclusive Edition (Boots) will only just start his competition career this year as he is only a four-year-old.

WHO IS YOUR SUPPORT CREW? I have a really supportive family with my Mum, Dad and brother, as well as my Granny Jean and Poppa who come and watch at shows. I also have some close friends that I always see at competitions. We are always wishing each other luck and playing together, it is one of my favourite things about competing. We are all so supportive of each other and have so much fun.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? One of my goals for the future is to event like my Mum used to when she rode, it would be so cool!

My friend Iyve Speirs is a big inspiration to me, as well as my Mum’s friend Henrike Puketapu who competes in top level dressage.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? I have had a few big achievements recently, such as winning the Lead Rein Section at the Youth Festival two years in a row, winning a garland, jumping 70cm and gaining my Pony Club D Certificate.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT PONIES? I love just being around them and being friends with them, as well as just having fun and enjoying my time riding.
