The New Zealand community can be truly proud of our team. A moment in time that will stay with me forever was when a rider from another nation said that our team spirit and support of each other could be seen and felt in the stables. But with the World Dressage Championships now just wonderful memories, it is full steam ahead for the new season. The deferred 2022 Bates Nationals and Livamol FEI Dressage World Challenge will be upon us before we know it. There is a full complement of national series with the addition of the Land Rover Teams League which is looking to be a popular new concept.

I hope many of you had the chance to read my daily facebook blogs from Herning and enjoyed and shared the adventure that was Denmark. It was a privilege to be there as Chef d'Equipe for the New Zealand team. I probably saw less of the competition than many of you glued to the livestream at home but what I did see was truly impressive. Over 100km walked once the event started, stables – office – arenas – coffee – repeat.Denmark itself truly impressed too from what I had time to see. I honestly don’t think I saw a single pothole or patched tarmac in two weeks! Arriving back to the state of most of our local roads made me realise just how truly bad they are.

This is an achievementoutstandingonmanylevels. It is the first time a New Zealand bred horse has qualified for and will compete at this prestigious event, ridden and bred by a New Zealand rider. The FEI has been gradually working towards a policy that horses
should be bred in the country they represent at these championships. Philippe Maynier, the FEI Dressage Sport Manager was therefore very pleased to learn of this entry.

STOP PRESS - Victoria Wall and Furst Hit EDH went through to the Small Final where they scored a very creditable 73% in the torrential rain at the Longines FEI World Breeding Dressage championships for young horses.

In 2014 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first recipient of the FEI Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of her leading role as supporter of equestrian sport throughout her reign as British monarch. ohn Thompson and Chemistry were trailblazers for the team on day one. Drawing start number twenty-one and scoring 68.059%, they put New Zealand in a good spot on the scoreboard for the team, and individually intwenty-seventh place. John was rightly delighted with the young stallion. Their score was trending well over 69% with the pair heading for a personal best, showing their typical highlights in the pi pa tour. Unfortunately, one small error at the end of the one times did not go unnoticed by the judges which impacted the final score, albeit Anne Gribbons from USA scored the pair over 70%.

On day two Melissa Galloway climbed aboard Joey and headed down to the warmup in the rain. The weather gods fortunately decided to be kind and Melissa’s smile and adoration of Joey at the end of the test said it all. It was super consistent test for the pair with the talent for passage and half passes in trot and canter zig zag shining through, trending at over 70% throughout for a total of 70.978%. It was yet another personal best – what a place to pull that out!

The team decided that he would go in the last team spot on day two to give him as much recovery time as possible. He remained under close veterinarian supervision while Gaylene and coach Vanessa Way strategized his lead up.

Our third rider to go, Gaylene Lennard had a particularly difficult lead up to her competition. The team rallied around when fortyeight hours before the trot up at his late evening check, Jax showed a raised temperature. Until that point his twice daily checks for the FEI Health Horse App had been perfectly normal, so it was all credit to the diligence of groom Abbie Deken that this was picked up that evening and not the next morning. The event veterinarian was called immediately, and the decision was made to put Jax into an isolation barn which of course was distressing for the horse to be on his own and away from his stableAbbiemates.stayed with the horse 24/7 to keep him as settled as possible, sleeping on an improvised bed of bales of shavings, horse rugs and blankets. With the EHV1 (equine herpes) scare still on the radar in Europe, Jax was tested for this and once he was deemed negative and
competition, the top thirty combinations qualified for the Grand Prix Special with the final cut off at 71.149%. It was oh so close for Melissa Galloway and Windermere J’Obie W who were a fantastic thirty–third place on 70.978% - an incredible performance from ninety-three entries. Our close-knit team had such mixed emotions – all so thrilled for Melissa but at the same time shared a tinge of disappointment that we wouldn’t see the pair in the Special – which is the test that Joey had been scoring so well in during the lead up events. But there could be no taking away anything from the fact the pair had come to their first World Championships and scored a personal best in the Grand Prix.

Posting 69.627% very close to their personal best, it was just so heart wrenching that a few minutes later at the final stewards check, a trace of blood was detected on the steward’s tissue from near Jax’s lip, and the Ground Jury subsequently declared them eliminated. Their score would have placed them 44th as in individual in the Grand Prix.

Considering the pair had only done five Grand Prix tests in their career, add in an interrupted final preparation, it can only be said the combination performed exceptionally well with real credit to Gaylene’s competitive spirit and resilience. You had to be there to experience the real dressage fervour that this magnificent stallion and his doll like rider Charlotte (Lottie) Fry of Great Britain generated in the magnificent Stutteri ASK Stadium at the World Championships in Herning 2022.

Gold to Denmark 235.451%, silver for Great Britain 234.223%, bronze for Germany 230.791%.Theteam results were critical for direct qualification for Paris 2024, with next in order; Sweden, Netherlands, and USA earning a place. The average score for the USA top three riders was 73.183%.Australia picked up the FEI Group G 'Paris' Olympic

o meet Lottie Fry in person simply defies her performances on “Glammy.” She is petite, quiet and humble. But she transforms into her own sphere of focus as she guides the Glamourdale powerhouse around the arena making it all look so effortless with a harmony and sense of enjoyment that hardly seems possible given the massive movement she sits on. The Grand Prix Special was a fascinating competition with the components of the test, including increased difficulty in the transitions, the piaffe/passage tour, the placement of the pirouettes, all requiring a higher degree of balance, power, engagement and rideability of the horse. The crowd was on the edge of its seats with Laudrup-Dufour, Fry and Werth the last three competitors to go. They knew deep down it would be another Denmark - Great Britain duel but it seemed they favoured Glamourdale to win the first individual championship of the event. Glamourdale showed a more

Healthy foals aren’t just a matter of good luck but also of sound planning that should start prior to conception. The last two months of your mare's pregnancy are the most important when it comes to foetal growth and development. Ensuring the optimal nutritional needs of your mare are met are paramount for foal health.
THE THIRD TRIMESTER OF THE PREGNANT MARE
If your mare is a good doer and doesn’t require much hard feed in addition to her grass and hay considering a well formulated balancer will pay dividends. A balancer in this trimester should contain a good quality protein level, minerals and vitamins. Preferably the mix will contain organic minerals for more bio-available uptake by mare
away and is a highly palatable and economical form of feed which should form the main basis of your mares’ diet. A good quality mycotoxin binder over this period is recommended if pasture has been under stress over winter as high endophyte pastures may increase the risk of abortion or other pregnancy complications. If you have a mare that has struggled with holding weight this winter especially in areas that were hit by flooding she should be on a good quality broodmare full feed ration in addition to the grass and hay so that you can feed 2 – 3kg or more to help prevent her losing any more weight and still sustain foetal growth. This feed may end up transitioning to be an early lactation feed as well as the mares demands will increase significantly when she is trying to produce milk but the grass still hasn’t kicked away properly.

Spring grass is starting to come
ith winter now progressing towards Spring, we are still sloshing round in our gumboots in the mud and our infoal mares are heading into the third trimester with our future World Cup and Olympic champions (I know very optimistic but we have a team and we know we can get there!). So how important is this time and what should we be doing about targeting optimal nutrition?

Third trimester is basically counted as days 226 until around day 340 and is the most important one in terms of foetal growth and development. In the 9th month of gestation your foal is starting to develop the beautiful coat and mane and tail it is going to be born with and is growing at the rate of 500g a day and is somewhere between 17-20kg in weight. If the foal is to be born at a foaling facility your mare should be receiving her vaccinations. In the final 2 months of gestation your foal will be heading towards weighing anywhere from 45-60kg and is depositing lots of minerals into their body tissues. It’s really important that you are meeting the nutritional requirements of your mare so that she can meet the demands of the foal.

Alongside the competition, an FEI Judges refresher seminar was also held. The seminar began on Friday afternoon, so there was time to check out the venue. We were able to freely enter the main arena to watch the teams complete their final twenty-

refresher courses are compulsory for FEI judges to attend every three years and are held in Europe facilitating judges from across the world having the opportunity to observe and assess world class combinations.
“We viewed videos and judged on our phones and tablets (via the Black Horse One platform) several scenarios that can occur within various dressage movements, and it was so positive to have the opportunity to discuss our marks and the various ‘what-if’ scenarios that judges face when judging live with literally a split second to make a decision and give a mark.”

In addition to the theoretical component of the course, participants ‘side-line’ judged one of the FEI Junior tests and day two of the Grand Prix competition with the seminar attendees on headphones, and the Seminar Directors 5* judges Han Christian Matthiesen and Dr Dieter Schule on microphones. They were long days, filled with valuable insights and information.

The rock concert atmosphere was electric as the arena filled to capacity. The crowd clapped and cheered as the seven judges were ceremoniously delivered to their boxes by horse and carriage, the evening was balmy, and everyone was ready for 3 hours of top sport.
Most of the horses are fully used to this atmosphere and they just rise to the occasion, and we saw beautiful performances with clever choreography designed to not only show off a combination’s highlights, but movements cleverly placed throughout the whole of the arena giving all judges the opportunity to view and reward the performance. The music was across a range of popular, patriotic, here and there a touch moody, and in many cases, cleverly designed to spotlight movements being presented more
There was a well-deserved day off for the judges and the fifteen qualified riders between the Grand Prix Special and the freestyle which had an 8pm start on the Wednesday evening.
Such a high note to end a wonderful trip, and personally so valuable to see the top end of the training scale being produced and performed with excellence.

But technically the black stallion Glamourdale, so tactfully and effortlessly ridden by Charlotte Fry, edged ahead movement by movement and filled the arena with his natural expression and presence, and you could hear the crowd gasp as he produced movement after movement drawing 9’s and 10’s from the judges finishing on 90.654%, with the beautifully elegant Danish rider awarded 89.411%

Anticipation was high before the last two riders entered the arena, as both Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour and Charlotte Fry had shown top class performances and had taken turns at being first and second in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special with barely 1% between them.
One of the things I love about the international shows in Europe is how the crowd shows their full support and appreciation of each rider, and as the evening wore on they could not contain their excitement and were clapping each rider as they turned onto their final centreline.
Overall, the scores ranged from the early to mid-70%’s for two of the competitors, with the bulk of the class scoring above 80% and the judges rewarding the high quality evident in impulsion, collection, expression, and harmony.

A legend in our lifetime.
Berny met Jutta Rosenblatt in 1998. They eventually married and for twenty years were a formidable team running Vollrath Stud. Berny left a true legacy by importing five Hanoverian stallions and purchasing thoroughbred mares which were on-bred to Hanoverians. He loved the breeding-side of horses, particularly the foals. “He loved seeing the youngsters in the paddock and was justifiably proud of his achievements. He had a real eye for a foal. Looking back on notes he made each year; he was astonishingly correct in his description of particular traits of foals and their future ability” saidSadlyJutta.Berny was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in October 2021 and died in July this year.
He moved to ten acres near Wanganui with his wife Debbie (nee Smith) and they established the Vollrath Stud. Originally breeding Cleveland Bay crosses he became
interested in Hanoverians. Through his friendship with Australian breeder Holger Schmorl, in 1992 he purchased the magnificent black stallion, Dynamit. Berny handled Dynamit at all times and also rode him extensively, hacking him 10km to the beach for a ride and back again. He adored the stallion.

I live in Cust (North Canterbury) on a lifestyle block with my husband Paul and our two children, Caitlin, & Harry. You could say that dressage is in my blood - my mother Sue Alleyne was one of NZ’s best in her day and my Grandmother Joy Pearce was a highly respected judge. My horse Geppetto is a ten-year-old homebred gelding, currently competing at small tour level. Although a little on the lazy side he is very good to train and extremely forgiving of my mistakes. I am twenty-two, currently competing at Advanced Medium with my mare, Miss Dior. I am also in my first year of studying to be a nurse at Ara, fitting my riding in around my studies. While difficult, and often draining, both are rewarding in their own ways & being able to ride after class is the best way to finish a day. I am looking forward to interacting with the other riders on the Canterbury Dressage Squad, having some fun and improving our dressage together.
ith this squad our aim is to create a system that brings riders, trainers, judges, and owners together to build a strong area group while supporting riders in performance and training. Dressage Canterbury will be mentoring, encouraging, and supporting the squad members on their journey through the grades aiming towards the higher levels with the goal of creating a direction and pathway into the New Zealand development squads and increase the number of riders achieving national eligibility criteria.

The Dressage Canterbury Committee is excited to announce the newly formed Canterbury Dressage Squad. Local riders were asked to apply, and we were amazed at the response with over thirty riders applying, the subcommittee found it very hard as the level of applicants was very high. A group of eight riders plus one reserve combination were selected.
I am forty-eight! (gulp - quips Tanya) & have been passionate about dressage for the last ten years. Before that I dabbled in eventing and showing after a fifteen-year break from riding. SE Gatsby (Harry) is my current superstar, we are training hard to put our best hoof forward for the coming season. As a rider who well & truly ‘qualifies’ for inclusion in any Masters Series, I am probably the oldest member of the squad! Professionally, I work as an Air Traffic Controller and I am also a small business owner (bespoke horse agistment services). A late-in-life convert to ‘pure’ dressage (from eventing), I have been on an eye-opening journey ever since. In a way, I feel like I am finally learning to ride! Breeding and bringing on the young horse who I share this steep learning curve with has been the greatest & most rewarding challenge I have ever experienced. I feel incredibly honored and lucky to have been selected for the squad, I look forward to supporting and learning from the other members. Our individual journeys to this point will have been so different; the opportunity to tap into such a knowledge base is a great privilege.

Having competed to FEI level on a number of horses, I now have a young team of homebred horses that really excite me –the five-year-old SWE Baloo (Buckingham/Ramirez), threeyear-old SWE Bellarouletta (Bellario/Ramirez), and I have the ride on my mother’s four-year-old SWE Bellagio (Belissimo M/Rascalino). For me, work is a mix of coaching and equine myofunctional therapy work focusing on rehabilitation and equine biomechanics for a great mix of racehorse & sport horse clients. I also have a pony mad two-year-old daughter who is already trying to steal my horses! I am very grateful and excited to be selected for the squad this year, it adds a ‘team’ aspect to a very individual sport.

I ride a wonderful Hanoverian mare Dulcet, by Dante Weltino out of a Furst Romancier mare. Dulcie is a seven-year-old and this will be our third season together. She was the five- and six-year-old South Island Festival of Future Stars YDH Champion. Last season she won the SI overall Novice Super 5 champion, the Zilco MFS Champion & second nationally over all grades for the Zilco MFS. I am really looking forward to being part of the squad team, to learn more, improve much more with our correct training and have like-minded peers to help with the psych side of our sport as we all know it can be a tough game mentally. It will be beneficial to have support and encouragement from other squad members. Bring on the new season, exciting times ahead.

I am based in Weedons, near Christchurch with my husband Lyndon & our toddler Lydia. My horse Wisdom WDS is an 11-yearold gelding. We have been a combination for 3.5 years. We are currently competing at Small Tour, were members of the NZL Livamol FEI Dressage World Challenge Team 2021. I am very excited to be a member of the Canterbury Dressage Squad. Dressage can be a solitary sport and I believe that the support network that will be created with my fellow teammates will inspire us all to reach our goals and potential.

FEI JUDGES 'REFRESHED' BY SEMINAR AT CDIO ROTTERDAM

The seminar was organised by the IDOC Oceania to primarily cater for all Asia Pacific FEI judges and National Grand Prix level judges from the region. It was then opened to members from all parts of the world which gave a very diverse group with judges from Argentina, Guatemala, Canada, Slovenia, France, Netherlands, India, Singapore, Philippines as well as Australia and New Zealand. Judith Cunningham, NZL A level judge, Dressage Board Member and National Judges Officer also took the opportunity to attend.
The seminar clinicians were Hans-Christian Matthieson (Denmark) and Susie Hoovenaars (Australia) who led a morning session of theory and discussions, stressing that judges must be fair and honest with marks, making sure they go low enough for badly performed work or incorrect movements and the importance of comments to back up low marks.

Session two was at the competition venue beginning with a Grand Prix (national class) followed by the FEI Nations Cup comprising of seven teams of four riders. Hans-Christian and Susie shared a superb commentary on each horse throughout the competition allowing for our thoughts and great discussions on some very interesting scenarios that horses often throw at their riders. We all felt very relaxed and willing to participate in conversations.

Day two was based around the Grand Prix Special. It was another full day with a very informative. full commentary by the clinicians and the opportunity for questions which wereDayencouraged.threewasa free day so we took in some Rotterdam history. The
very relaxed and our exam was done via the Black Horse One platform, working on our phones, tablets, and laptops. Movements were shown just once on the big screen, often Piaffe and Passage, sometimes just one movement or up to five movements strung together and with a great array of good and bad bits, problems from resistance, contact, uneven steps etc to analyse, we were given time to mark each movement and make a comment. Once all the judging was complete marks were submitted to Black Horse One. These were put out on a spreadsheet with all marks from all judges (anonymous). We went through every movement and discussed any differences. This was a very interesting and valuable exercise. We then had to wait for the clinicians to go over our comments and marks more thoroughly and advise us if we had “passed”. We all received our individual marks and comments along with Hans-Christians on our phones and devices.

Then it was back to the show for further commentaries on the Grand Prix Special and the Freestyle. Each team had two riders in each class which created an exciting team finish.

A career highlight was meeting Reiner Klimke, watching him school his horse and going to a dinner listening to his experiences throughout his career. That was really inspirational.

Carol initiated the Northland dressage judges subcommittee which is used as a sounding board for ideas and facilitates Carol being able to encourage other senior judges to step up and take responsibility. The system by which she mentors area judges means Northland has a very high retention rate, all judges feel supported and she provides the essential ‘ear’ when they encounter problems. Her commitment is trulyDressageappreciated.hasenabled Carol to meet like-minded people. She has enjoyed travelling to Australia to judge, and to Europe to attend seminars with highly respected trainers. She acknowledges the amazing support she has had through Dressage NZ and the time spent with different judges over the years, sharing their knowledge and expertise.
Dressage initially interested her as a way of controlling off the track thoroughbred ex racehorses and then progressing to more purpose bred dressage horses. She trained numerous dressage horses and competed up to Advanced level.

Bates NZ DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS
JOIN THE TEAM
Finally the much awaited 2022 Bates National Championships will take place in November, the event having been postponed from earlier in the year. It will be held over three days, Thursday to Saturday with the Grand Prix Freestyle featuring in the stadium on Saturday night. A huge thanks to Bates Saddles who have committed to this November event in addition to March 2023 when our sport will hopefully return to a new normal!The2022 event will be under national rules (no CDI) and will incorporate National Championships at all levels plus Rising Star Championships up to Advanced Medium (formerly known as Amateur) plus the ProAM Championships for Advanced to Grand Prix. A CDI is scheduled for the 2023 event. More information about 2023 later in the year.
Well I said back in 2021 how thrilled and excited I was to be part of the Bates National Dressage Championships 2022. Unfortunately the event was deferred but I was part of the Dressage for Denmark team which was a great learning curve for the events to come, plus the opportunity to meet many of the team who will be involved again. I look forward to seeing you all in November 2022 and March 2023.
Because of the 21 - 22 disrupted season, particularly in the northern regions, there will be no qualification for the 2022 event but if excessive entries are received, then wait lists and balloting may need to be implemented. Qualification will be required for 2023.

• Teams will be called Land Rover (plus two names maximum) Dressage NZ reserves the right to request a name change if there are duplicates or any name considered inappropriate for whatever reason
• W here possible, teams should include a first-year member
FORMAT:
• A ny rider who becomes domiciled in the opposite island after the team has been nominated will continue to compete for their nominated team
• T he allowance to use horse/pony flexi starts is encouraging to cross discipline participation without the need for annual starts
For Dressage & Para Equestrian Athletes
• Teams may consist of up to 7 combinations
Two categories of team leagues will be held in each island with a national final
NATIONAL NEWS
• To create a supportive, inclusive team spirit and culture combined with friendly rivalry amongst athletes in a traditionally individually focused sport
• A ll riders must be ESNZ Competitive Child Members or Full Members
• R iders will create and nominate their own teams.
Fun but Serious! A competition where riders have the chance to get their own teams together. There are team competitions in each Island plus a grand national final.
• A ll team riders must be from the same island
• A ny grade and number of Para Equestrian registered/classified riders may be included in a team and points will be accrued from both Dressage NZ and FEI/ESNZ Para tests
• T he Youth League will include the U25CH at Taupo Jan 2023 as a qualifying event
• T he winning Island teams will be determined by the total points earned by the team combinations
• In the case of a tie of points, the highest average of the team % wins
• Horses or Ponies Graded Preliminary to Advanced Medium at Ist September 2022. If a combination upgrades, they may continue to accrue points
SCORING AND TEAM CLASSIFICATION
• Points will be accrued by every team rider in every qualifying graded dressage class or para equestrian graded class at Premier League and National events listed as below in both islands
• T he final SI event will be the SI Championships 4-6 February 2023. The winning team in each category will receive $700.00 divided equally amongst all team members who scored team points, plus Land Rover Team rosettes for winners, runners up and third place

YOUTH LEAGUE:
• R iders 25yrs & under but if a rider turns 26 on or after the 1 August, they may continue to accrue team points for the season
WELCOME LEAGUE:
• Bronze & Silver Riders plus a maximum one Gold combination per team.
• R iders 26yrs and over at 1 Aug 2022
• T he National Dressage Championships November 24 – 27 Nov 2022 is a qualifying event
• T he SICH Championships Feb 2023 is a qualifying event
• If a team rider competes at an event in the opposite island they count points towards their Island score
• T he final NI event will be Waikato Championships 17-19 February 2023. The winning team in each category will receive $700.00 divided equally amongst all team members who scored team points, plus Land Rover Team rosettes for winners, runners up and third place
• T he Land Rover League Champions will be the Island team with the highest total points
• Teams must include at least one horse or pony graded each of Preliminary, Novice, Elementary at 1st Sept 2022
• A ll presentations [Island & National) will be made unmounted at an Award Ceremony Function at Land Rover Horse of the Year Show on a day and time to be determined – ceremony format to be agreed with Land Rover and HOY
• T he national Land Rover League Champions in each category $1,050 divided equally among all team members who scored points for their team plus all team members receive a Land Rover Champion rosette
• Entry tickets to the event for Land Rover presentation day will be made available to all prize winners for any rider wishing to attend but are not competing - these are not transferable
