EDITORIAL

FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME TO ISSUE FORTY SEVEN OF THE DRESSAGE NZ BULLETIN

W

ith the national championships just a few days away it is very reassuring that the rather gloomy predictions of the decreased participation that our sport would face post COVID-19 lockdowns have not proven to be the reality. In fact, many shows held since the beginning of the new season under level 1 Covid conditions have experienced higher than normal entries. The good news sport wide is that this is not just evident in the dressage discipline but also being experienced by many jumping and eventing shows too. We have also had reports that everyone is in fine spirits and pleased to be back doing what they love to do. We congratulate Sally Linton for being the first up ESNZ Game Changer. By her own admission Sally did not realize the big impact her seemingly small conversation of encouragement had on another rider. So, remember sometimes it’s the little things that you can do for your fellow riders that can have the biggest impact. This is the culture that the Change the Rein program is intended to promote. Let’s try and remember that in everything we do and say, wherever we do and say it. This month we farewell Jude Nickolls as South Island Riders Representative. Jude has been a wonderful advocate for southern riders, and we thank her for the positive way in which she undertook the role she undertook the role and her considered and valued input into national committee meetings. This issue is full of news from around the country and across the globe. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy bringing it to you. Next month after an eight month delay we will know who our 2020 national champions are. But everyone who competes must take credit for pushing these champions across the line.

PREMIUM ARENA MIX The recycling process takes used tyres which would otherwise be disposed of in landfill, stockpiled, illegally dumped or shipped offshore to be burnt. At our plant in Cambridge our triple treated refinery process uses a series of shredders and magnets to produce a consistent evenly sized material that is 99.9% metal free. Why use Treadlite arena mix: • Less wear and tear on horses hooves • Reduced concussion on joints through better impact absorption • Lively surface allows horses to get more air above the ground and better take off for jumping • Maintains a more even spread than traditional sand surface • Less affected by rain • Reduced dust means less respiratory issues • Can be used alone over base-coarse or spread on top and mixed with existing sand

join us in Taupo we hope you will enjoy the talent displayed and the wonderful hospitality of Dressage New Zealand at these prestigious Championships.

Ron Bates, Managing Director of Bates Saddles had this to say “Bates Saddles are delighted to celebrate the 22nd year of our relationship with Dressage New Zealand, in association with our distributor Weatherbeeta New Zealand. We have a well-established relationship with New Zealand Dressage riders and are thrilled to be celebrating 22 years of support for this wonderful event.

Dressage NZ is extremely grateful for the support of all event supporting sponsors, national series sponsors, Pub Charity and the Lion Foundation in what has proved to be a particularly challenging year across the business and sport sectors. Thank you.

We are very excited about the launch of our new Dressage model, the Artiste. It has had a tremendous response both globally and here in New Zealand. The Artiste gives the rider a feel, much narrower and closer to any of our previous Dressage models. We would be delighted to see you at the Bates Saddle Stand, where we can take you through the features of the Artiste and even arrange a test ride, should you wish.” I would personally like to take this opportunity to wish every horse and rider combination the best of luck and extend a very warm thanks to all of the officials and organisers, who together have worked tirelessly to ensure an event of this calibre. Despite the challenging times that we all find ourselves in, I have no doubt that this event will match the Calibre of previous years. For all of the spectators that will

It’s been a decade since the championships were held at Taupo and there is a level of excitement for their return. The indoor stadium and the Martin Collins NZ waxed fiber work in surface have been valuable additions to the center since the event was last held at this venue. A huge thanks to Martin Collins NZ for recently upgrading the work in arena ensuring our horses have optimum footing for their competition preparation. There are some new trophies up for grabs this year. Julie and David Brougham Have donated the Vom Feinsten trophy for the winner of the Grand Prix class while young horse titles will be awarded in each age group with Matthews Hanoverians and Elite Equine recognizing the importance of the individual age groups and donating trophies for the champion four year old and five year old respectively while the longstanding Aztek Stud Trophy will be awarded to the champion six year old. There are twenty high quality

entries contesting the young horse classes on Thursday 19th. Seventeen entries will ensure a Grand Prix showcase beginning on Friday. Jody Hartstone & Whisper IV won back in 2010 - who will win this year? There are three other previous winners in the field - Julie Brougham, Vanessa Way and Wendi Williamson are all set to challenge but the exciting combination of Melissa Galloway and Windermere J'Obéi W are unbeaten on home turf in 2020. Advanced level is particularly strong with 29 entries. This new level provides a solid training ground for the FEI small tour and we can expect to see the real effects of this next season. An addition to this year’s event is the previously Covid cancelled Dressage NZ Awards presentations function which will be held in the upstairs stadium suite following the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday evening. The backbone of our sport organizers, the volunteers and officials, the Fair Play game changers and those have gone above and beyond spanning several decades will be acknowledged for their huge contribution at the same event is the riders who are dedicated to both performance and participation. Entry to the event is free for spectators and limited tickets will be available for the Awards Function from the office at $20 each The timetable for the event can be found online here. https://www.nzequestrian.org.nz/disciplines/dressage/competition/bates-national-championships/

KOKO QUALIFIES FOR WORLD BREEDING CHAMPIONSHIP FOR YOUNG HORSES A last-minute bid by Sarah Wilkinson to qualify her 5-year-old KWPN mare Koko for the FEI/WBFSH World Championship has become a successful reality. The event which was originally planned for earlier in the year was another Covid casualty, but is rescheduled for December and returns to Verden (GER) in conjunction with the Hanoverian Stud Book 8 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2020

SARAH WILKINSON REPORTS FROM THE UK

Sarah and Koko have hit UK soil with tremendous success in a somewhat chaotic year, the trip back to Germany will require regular testing for Covid and a 2 week quarantine on their return to the UK. Photos: Kevin Sparrow

“So far 2020 has been full of highs and lows with Corona putting a halt on some plans but we have made the most of it here while focusing on our training with Gareth Hughes and setting up a nice base. Between both Hello and Koko, we have had fourteen starts this year for twelve wins, one fourth place at a championship final, and an unfortunate elimination from an unlucky step out of the arena. If it weren’t for this we would have won the Nexgen Final - as frustrating as this was it was still a learning curve and we achieved great marks with a board of 9s none the less! All scores have been in the mid-70s plus, barring our first test. It is exciting to see both Hello and Koko are proving to be seriously competitive horses here in the British scene!

As for Koko he is only five but shows so much promise for the future. So far his lowest score being 73% and five tests he has gained well over 80%.

The aim now is to start Hello at a Prix St Georges next month, while we train the Grand Prix work at home - which she is starting to really shine in! Speaking with Gareth he thinks a realistic goal is WEG 2022!

Koko boasts some impressive bloodlines. On the sire side, he is by Desperado (by Vivaldi who was by Crack C). His dam Brioleta O was by Johnson who is by Jazz.

Another exciting venture for the team this year has been taking on my own stable where my horses and I are based. This enables us to expand and carry on training and competing from a very local base to so many show venues. With the sale of my beautiful young Apache gelding I have now acquired a gorgeous Johnson 3-year-old mare, who I think will be very promising! I am lucky to have a UK ancestry visa as my grandparents were born here. That means I have a five-year visa which I can choose to turn into a residency at the end of the 5 years if I wish. This route allows me to make long term plans”

It is very exciting for New Zealand to be represented at Verden. Dressage NZ wishes Sarah and Koko all the very best for a successful show. NOVEMBER 2020 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | 9

A COLLECTIVE TEAM EFFORT Story by Rosanne Rix Photos by Libby Law Photography

So it’s a wrap for the New Zealand leg of FEI Dressage World Challenge for 2020. It was the 40th time it has been held in New Zealand, having previously run under the international banners of the Haig and the Samsung, but more recently sponsored nationally by Livamol. Kerrin Beatson from Livamol truly engages with the event organisation throughout the months leading up to the competition and praised Dressage NZ for their efforts to work with the FEI to ensure the event could proceed despite the COVID-19 travel restrictions which prevented an international foreign judge officiating.

T

his year the challenge was very ably co-hosted by Dressage Wellington and Dressage New Zealand at Masterton’s Solway Showgrounds. Dressage Wellington are a small committee, mostly made up of competing riders, so the necessary tasks are juggled among their riding commitments. The Wellington regional championships followed immediately after the challenge so for some of the team it was a long four days. The New Zealand team was announced by the national selectors at the evening function following the horse inspection and there was much excitement as the four names were called out! In no particular order, the team announced was Chelsea Callaghan (Sisters II Etta J) Liz Hutson (Hapsburgh PSH), Louise Duncan (Northern Ivanthus) all from Wellington Area and Diane Wallace on her home bred KP Dexter (Marlborough). Team scores for the more difficult Prix St Georges and Intermediate I carry a coefficient, so it is an advantage for all countries in the zone to include this level of riders in their team. It was a huge thrill for the locals that Liz and Chelsea who are both members of the Dressage Wellington committee were on the team. Trot up day was overcast with some drizzle, however that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the riders who presented in front of the

FEI veterinarian Amanda Illston and FEI Ground Jury Mura Love and Barbara Chalmers. Mura Is an FEI 3* judge and Barbara Chalmers NZ list A. One horse was put on hold but was accepted when represented. Assessing combinations for the best presented awards were well known judges, Helen HughesKeen, and Sue Hobson, the latter fresh from her election as ESNZ President. Both commented that all the horses and riders were beautifully presented however two combinations stood out. The winner in the senior group was Alix Campbell who made the trip all the way from Waitemata, and Taranaki’s Mikayla Wildermoth won the youth section rosette.

Sue and Helen kindly offered their time and expertise during this show to talk to riders after their tests if they wished, and they provided honest and positive feedback. They also encouraged all riders and supporters to sit by them in the marquee to watch the classes and discuss tests as they were performed. This was well supported, and from the questions I heard being asked, and the feedback given by Helen and Sue, a great deal of valuable information was imparted. The new judging system for the FEI children’s tests, used for the first time at the 2020 European youth championships was used at this at this event. The judge at C judges

oonly the technical performance and the judge on the long side assesses only the rider. The new system was clearly explained by Sue and Helen, as there was a little confusion from some riders about some of the marking. Turning to the competition classes, the Exclusively Yours Youth 12-16 years was strongly contested and was the biggest class with ten riders. In a class seemingly dominated by chestnuts - six in all there were also two riders who had two mounts, Mikayla Wildermoth and Frankie Lawn. Mikayla was a clear winner on just over 71% on Thumbellina II. Mikayla said she feels herself very lucky to have two horses as she got to practice her test twice as much! She has trained with Abbie Deken for five years and is very appreciative of her help. Rebecca Mobberley on the elegant Sayonara

FE (by Salutation), scored 68.95 for 2nd place. Third was Frankie Lawn (Taranaki) on Kirkwood Greenlight with 67.72. Frankie had a challenging ride on her other mount, Rifesyde Firefly, but rode tactfully to complete her test. Mikayla slotted into 4th place on Don Douglas CFH. A particularly delightful moment in this class was seeing Grace Purdie on Firebird Five spontaneously hugging her pony at the completion of her test. The next class was the Aussie Equine Supplies Senior I Riders where eight combinations started. This class was one of two to boast a mother and daughter combination - Vaughn and Bronwyn Cooper, (Hunterville) and this pair certainly kept it in the family finishing a very close 1st and 2nd - 71.89% for Vaughn with Bronwyn a mere hoofbeat behind on 71.84%. name was very apt as both horses are Australian bred. Vaughn said that Bronwyn put the pressure on with her mark and so she was excited to just edge in front. Both of them commented that they were thrilled to be competing in this special competition together but that getting such high marks as well as placing 1st and 2nd was an achievement they hadn’t dreamed of, saying it was something they will cherish forever. Cindy Wiffen, Santana MH (Hawke’s Bay), placed 3rd on 66.95, closely followed by Simone van der Plas and Andante (Wellington) on 66.48%. The Quality Presentations Senior II class had three competitors and another mother and daughter combination - Frankie Webb and Louise Duncan. The winner in this class was Alix Campbell on Astek Robina finishing on 66.06%, with Louise and Wolkenstein BC close

behind on 2nd with 65.98%. Frankie and Artistry finished in 3rd on 62.98%. Winner Alix commented that she felt privileged to compete at the FEI Dressage World Challenge and despite being initially nervous said once she had finished her test she could not wipe the smile off her face. The Syncroflex Ltd Prix St Georges Senior Riders class also had three combinations with the clear winner being Diane Wallace and KP Dexter on 68.97%. Diane had made the trek over the Cook Strait and was delighted with her win, saying she’d had a great time at the show and loves her boy for always trying hard, commenting also that he is a real sweetie. Diane was grateful for support from ESNZ sponsor for a ferry subsidy. Second place went to Kim Schwass and Sparks Will Fly on 65.95% and snapping at Sparky’s hooves for 3rd was Louise Duncan and Northern Ivanthus on 65.29%.

The Livamol Intermediate I was contested by two riders, and the victor was Chelsea Callaghan on her black Friesian cross, Sisters II Etta J on 66.91%. Liz Hutson and Hapsburg PSH finished runner up on 63.45%. Sadly for the other entrant, rider Kate Tobin, a serious injury to a young horse at home resulted in the late withdrawal of Bradgate Riot Act. This show was wonderfully supported by Kerrin Beatson and International Animal Health products, as well as the individual class sponsors. When the winners of each class were interviewed they all thanked the sponsors, and Dressage Wellington and Dressage NZ for putting on such a fabulous show. The NZ team members all did us proud with some excellent percentages, and now we just have to wait for the other two countries scheduled to compete, China and Taipei in November and December. Dressage NZ wishes to acknowledge the FEI for their ongoing administrative and financial support of this invaluable international development competition – in particular Andreina Wipraechtiger, Programmes Leader, FEI Solidarity.

NEW FORMAT FOR JUDGING A POSITIVE COMPONENT Report by Sue Hobson

I ESNZ President Sue Hobson reports from the recent New Zealand league of the FEI World Dressage Challenge. Photo: Libby Law Photography

t was a real pleasure for me to be able to attend WDC this year. The FEI gave us special permission to run the event with a home-based FEI judge as it was obviously not possible for us to bring in the usual FEI Foreign international judge to work with one of our A level judges. I watched the Horse Inspection and was delighted with the way in which all competitors presented their horses and also the turnout. It was probably one of the best I have seen in recent years and everyone should be proud of themselves. The overall standard was excellent. I then spent the competition day watching the classes and saw some really talented riding. Interestingly this year was the first year the FEI scoring system was slightly different. It was basically split into two separate areas of competence in some of the tests. The C judge was totally responsible to judge the “technical” way of going of each test whilst the judge at B was solely responsible to judge the “riding”. This riding component was split into five individual marks with some very specific directives as to what had to be judged. This did cause some scores to be quite different. This system was used for the first time in Europe but with four “technical” judges around the arena but with the one “rider” judge being at B.

16 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2020

As you can imagine the scores were different between both technical and rider judges – in some respects a little like the Young Dressage judging system for 7YO horses where you have a Technical judge at C and two judges together on the side judging the young horse component. It is an excellent idea for us in New Zealand to utilise this type of judging at some of our events as it clearly encourages correct and effective riding. One of the directives that some judges I sat with were very impressed with the directives for Riders seat – one of which was “absorbing the horses movement” is shown. The four areas of rider marks were very specific for the judge to mark and a real feel of how the rider was influencing the horse. This was such a good directive and clearly how some riders received high marks when they rode so well. It is interesting to note also that when this judging methodology was used at the European Youth Championships earlier this year with very experienced FEI judges that the winning rider in the Individual Test scored 95% for rider section, but on average around 75% for technical. Differences of 10% to 17% were not uncommon for other combinations.

CHANGE THE REIN

#changetherein

Sally Linton and Good George Photo: Debbie Stevens

GameChangers is about encouraging people to tell us about acts of kindness or helpfulness by ESNZ members that made a difference to someone’s day. So, please keep your eyes and ears open when you’re out and about and nominate someone you witness doing something kind, supportive, helpful for someone (or a horse) that demonstrates the sort of inclusive, supportive, safe and friendly culture we’re working towards with Change the Rein. We will reward them and make sure people are aware of what great people we have in our sport.

If you want to nominate an ESNZ GameChanger, this is what you do: 1. Email nzef@nzequestrian. org,nz the following information (#GameChangers in the subject line) 2. Person nominating the GameChanger – your name, contact details (email & phone number)

GAMECHANGER SALLY LINTON

3. Who is the ESNZ member being nominated as a GameChanger (name, discipline, area group/club and role eg official, rider, volunteer, parent)

Sally Linton from the Waikato Dressage Group is a perfect example of what we mean when we talk about a GameChanger, someone who lives the values which our Change the Rein campaign is all about.

I

n this case ESNZ Dressage Sports Manager Wendy Hamerton heard that Sally talked to Masters Age Group rider, Jean Newman, at a local event in the Waikato and encouraged her to enter the Quin Buildings Masters Dressage Top Ten League. Jean’s horse is 19 years old and Jean is 69.

Jean rang Wendy very excited to find out more as she had just got some grading points at an event and wanted to know if they would count and said what a great ambassador that Sally was for the series. With people like you Sally we can Change the Rein. Thank you!

4. Photo of the GameChanger person 5. What was the GameChanger behaviour witnessed and the outcome (this doesn’t need to be heroic – just a kind, considerate, helpful, supportive, inclusive, welcoming, friendly act)

any people will know of her for her partnership with Charlotte Dujardin and the spunky chestnut ‘Gio’, or ‘Pumpkin’ as he is known at home. Renai insisted everything has already been written about Pumpkin and she didn't want to “bore” people so we ventured onto various subjects as we chatted. However for those that may not know, Pumpkin was a chance find for Charlotte during a Masterclass in the USA, and she just had to have him. With Renai as a partner owner, he was soon on his way back to Britain and recently made his international debut at the Keysoe CDI.

born Renai said she got her first pony, ‘Flash’ when she was ten years old. “He used to constantly buck me off”. She owned him for a quite a few years and used to ride everywhere. There was no showing or competing, “just riding”. She happily rode any pony that she could, most of them not her own. Later on, Renai showed Arabians, and proudly owned some very successful ones. Her initial foray into owning Hanoverians she attributes to good friend Tina Thorowgood. Her breeding philosophy has always been to breed quality horses for New Zealand riders and so it is fitting

Going later in the Grand Prix class Gio and Charlotte claimed second place. The Dutch-bred Apache x Tango nine-year-old may stand just 16 hands high but what he lacks in size he makes up for with heart and ability. The pair’s clean and zesty test was awarded a score of 79.34% for second place, achieving plenty of nines plus some tens for the piaffe-passage tour. They then went on to unanimously win the Grand Prix Freestyle with a score of 83.36%.

BUT BACK TO RENAI… When asked what her earliest horse memory was, Cambridge 20 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2020

Charlotte Dujardin and Pumpkin share a moment (and treat) after schooling.

that her favourite horse memory is purchasing the beautiful Hanoverian stallion, Worldly, who is now enjoying a well-earned retirement after an amazing career. For a time Renai took a break from horses and concentrated on her career, spending quite a number of years as an inbound manager for a big American freight forwarding company after previously working in a law firm. When asked what something was most people wouldn't know about her - that she was prepared to tell me!! – she hesitated for a bit and then said perhaps all the boards she sits on in Europe. As well as being

the president of the Hanoverian Society in New Zealand, she is also the vice president of the Hanoverian International body. More recently she been appointed as a member of the disciplinary board for the WBFSH (World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses).

for Pumpkin, she said it was the Olympics, and that he is long-listed for Great Britain. But of course COVID has disrupted many such hopes and plans all around the world and with the current spiking numbers in Europe, it is anyone's guess as to what will happen.

Going back to Pumpkin, I asked Renai about the interesting fact that she is a breeder of Hanoverians, but that Pumpkin is a Dutch horse. She had a wee chuckle and said yes, the irony had long since occurred to her, and she finds it quite amusing. Renai said that even in Germany fellow breeders gave her a good-natured ribbing about it.

Renai said Charlotte is fantastic at keeping her updated with how Pumpkin is, and they speak regularly. She describes Charlotte and herself as having a very special partnership, saying that it's not always easy to enter into a horse joint ownership situation. She has complete faith in Charlotte to make all day to day decisions, but they still discuss everything about him

When asked about her hopes

together. Renai most recently saw Pumpkin in 2019, and when asked if she had ridden him, she laughed and said no, but that she has been lucky enough to ride Valegro aka Blueberry and it's always an awesome highlight. She has played with all the fun moves on him tempis, half pass, pirouettes, piaffe and passage etc but she also really enjoys cantering him all around the fields and hacking down the lanes. “He is an incredibly powerful horse, but also amazingly kind”. Renai laughed when she said she's also been in the arena at the same time as Charlotte, Carl Hester, and Gareth Hughes to name a few and when she tries to go to the arena

Renai said her friendship with Charlotte started back when Greg Smith first brought her out to NZ, and she ended up having some lessons, although her then lack of confidence made her try her darndest to wriggle out of them, but friends, including Charlotte, would insist. “We got on well from the beginning and have become firm friends. I usually go over and stay with Charlotte every year - until COVID got in the way. I had planned to be at the Keysoe CDI that Pumpkin recently competed at, but obviously that was also impossible”. FEI DRESSAGE WORLD CUP™ DEFIES COVID IN DENMARK Article by FEI Photos by Annette Boe Østergaard

Persisting in the face of the disruption caused by the pandemic that led to the cancellation of multiple equestrian events in recent months, the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2020/2021 Western European League finally got underway in Denmark in mid-October.

nitially scheduled to take place in Herning, the opening leg was relocated to the National Equestrian Centre in Vilhelmsborg near Aarhus, where the main manor house ( a listed building that dates back to 1842) is closely associated with the world-famous master of fairy-tale-telling, writer Hans Christian Andersen. Vilhelmsborg staged the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final in 2001 when the allGerman podium was topped by Ulla Salzgeber with Rusty, while Isabell Werth lined up second with Antony FRH and Rudolf Zeilinger finished third with Livijno.

FIVE NATIONS Athletes from five nations competed at the opening leg, the top-class German contingent including world number three, Jessica von BredowWerndl partnering Zaire-E, and world number eight Helen Langehanenberg with Damsey FRH, along with Jessica Süss and Duisenberg.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Jessica von BredowWerndl and Zaire-E

Finland was represented by Emma Kanerva and Dambacu NL, while Nars Gottmer (Dicaprio Swing), Margo Timmermans (Catch Me) with Thamar Zweistra (Hexagon’s Double Dutch) flying the Dutch flag. Sweden’s Patrik Kittel (Delaunay OLD), Therese Nilshagen (Dante Weltino OLD) and Antonia Ramel (Brother de Jeu) added plenty of quality to the line-up. The host country’s Cathrine Dufour proved to be the one to beat with the 10-year-old gelding Bohemian with which she stole the show at last year’s Danish leg of the series when winning both the Grand Prix and Freestyle. Talking about the horse that day she said, “imagine what he can do when I start to push him some more!”, and he hasn’t disappointed, topping both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special at the CDI5* in Herning in March of this year, just before the sport was locked down due to the spread of Covid-19. Dufour came to Vilhelmsborg as the newly-crowned 2020 Danish Grand

Prix champion. She took the title for the fourth time in her career with great performances from her 17-year-old superstar Atterupgaards Cassidy at the championships staged in Uggerhalne last month, where she also became engaged to girlfriend Rasmine Rosedahl Laudrup, daughter of former soccer star Brian Laudrup who is now a popular Danish TV commentator and pundit. Public attendance at Aarhus was limited and the event was held strictly in line with national Covid restrictions and FEI guidelines. In a repetition of last season’s opening round of the FEI Dressage World Cup, Cathrine Dufour rode the ten-year-old Bohemian to win both the Grand Prix and Freestyle in front of her a home crowd in

Aarhus. The Danish number one produced a stunning display to take the top honours in the Grand Prix, with Germany’s five-time series champion lsabell Werth finishing in second place with Emilio and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl taking third spot with Zaire-E. Saturday’s action saw Dufour and Bohemian post a score of 88.435, far ahead of Werth and Bredow-Werndl who both scored 77%. In Sunday’s event, the competition was much closer, with Dufour’s score of 88.200 ( including marks as high as 93 per cent for artistic) narrowly beating Werth’s 87.845. And there was even more reason for the crowd at the Danish National Equestrian Centre to celebrate, as Carina Cassøe Krüth and Heiline’s Danciera finished fourth.

ctober saw the start of our regional competitions, and most of New Zealand’s best combinations were out in force for their first big start of the season. It was exciting to see how the horses have improved over the winter and the Dressage NZ squad riders performing well.

It was a treat to see Julie Brougham returning to the Manfeild Grand Prix arena aboard her beloved Steiny. After a 13-month hiatus, the pair were on form scoring over 70%. I was at Bay of Plenty Premier League, and I extend my congratulations to the Bay of Plenty organising committee for a very well run and friendly show. The numbers competing at this show were huge, but everything seemed to run smoothly, and the prize-giving format worked well. A special thanks to Reid Sanders from Martin Collins NZ for an upgraded and outstanding dressage warm-up surface at the NEC. It makes a massive difference to our horse’s performances. I can only imagine how fantastic it could be if one day if there were more of these surfaces at Taupo and around the country. New Zealand dressage is in an exciting place when you see the number of combinations in each grade that have the potential to go much further. The riders are training harder and pushing each other to compete better, which can only be fantastic for dressage and a huge step in the right direction. New Zealand breeders need to be commended for breeding horses with more

international quality and allowing the riders to work with great horses. New Zealand dressage is starting to see the benefits of that in all the levels. It was great having Melissa Galloway up from the South Island competing her horses in the Grand Prix, both horses looking much stronger, which resulted in her producing a personal best score of 72.15% on Johansen in the Grand Prix. Wendi Williamson and Gaylene Lennard stepped up to Level 8, with two very promising horses for the future. In the small tour Kallista Field, Wendi Williamson and Vanessa Way battled it out, all with powerful young horses for the future. Young riders Rebecca Williamson, Madison Schollum and Steph Baker having moved up a level together, battled it out in advanced which was great to see, and Brina Carpenter performed well in the level 8. The pony riders gave the adults a run for their money but even nicer to see is how supportive they are of each other. This month we profile squad riders that are great supporters of New Zealand bred horses. Kieryn Walton is a police detective by day and is very passionate about her own NZ warmblood breeding programme, two on Matthews Hanoverians bred horses, accountant Chanel Flyger and Northland team MH rider Casey Burton and young rider Rebecca Williamson whose squad mount is out of an MH mare, plus she gets to school a number of other MH horses in the team Williamson stable.

HIGH PERFORMANCE HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR SPORT? Over the last few years, I have made an effort to volunteer as a writer at shows and before that, as a test paper runner. I recently got a part-time job teaching at a local riding academy and am using the opportunity to promote dressage to the young riders there as a great lifelong sport to improve at and enjoy.

YOUR KEY PERSONAL GOAL? Not to be a poor struggling artist with no horses! Just kidding, a long-term goal/dream of mine is to compete internationally at Grand Prix, aiming for the World Cup Final, World Games, and the Olympics.

TRAINING OR COMPETING? I love training to develop my skills but think the only way to know whether it’s all paid off is to compete. The pressure of stringing movements together in a test in front of judges and sometimes an audience is a real assessment of whether your training is correct.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB? To be painting commissions for the best equestrian combinations from around the world such as. Isabell Werth & Bella Rose, Mark Todd & Charisma.

YOUR TYPICAL DAY? Photo: Your View Photography

Rebecca Williamson

WHY DRESSAGE?

I grew up learning how to ride with my mother, Wendi Williamson, who by then, was specialising in dressage. I became confident with how I could get myself and my horse to develop and perform the movements and did a bit of jumping at a pony club.

three-year-old, but after a week realised he was too small for her and thought he’d make an excellent first hack for me. From then on, I have been slowly paying him off. Toby and I have developed together in our training and are continuing to work our way up the dressage levels.

CURRENT SQUAD HORSE?

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

Don Tobio (Toby) is an eightyear-old black gelding warmblood by Donnerubin out of Gala MH. Wendi originally bought Toby for herself as a recently started

Charlotte Dujardin. She is one is a fiercely focused and determined lady whom I have long admired for her extraordinary dedication to and perseverance with her training.

I wake up for the gym (in Kumeu) at 4.15 am and aim to be back home by 6.30am - lots of coffee and a bit of breakfast later, and I’m either riding Toby and DD or studying for school. My painting time is often (sadly) postponed till the weekend. If I don’t ride in the morning, then I ride just before feed up so I can chuck Toby in his stable straight away. Some days I teach at the local riding academy (mostly weekends or school holidays), and I work on the weekends - feeding out, tacking up/untacking - groom stuff, which is great to earn a bit of money to help pay off my horses.

YOUR PEARL OF WISDOM? Life is like a dressage test. If you’re too busy thinking about your last move, the next one won’t be any good either.

HIGH PERFORMANCE which as you can imagine puts substantial emotional demands on me with some of the things I see. I also sell some of my lovely horses to help fund my sport which can be heartbreaking, but necessary.

YOUR KEY PERSONAL GOAL? To keep learning, to keep improving, to keep pushing and challenging the full-time riders/ professionals in New Zealand and maybe one day, be up there with them.

YOUR FOUR DINNER GUESTS? Isabell Werth, Charlotte Dujardin, Richard Branson, Matthew McConaughey. All so incredibly inspirational and they know what it takes to succeed.

YOUR MAIN EQUESTRIAN AND DRESSAGE INFLUENCERS? Jacqui Winspear at the very beginning of my riding career, and still a good friend today. Jayne Craike when I switched to dressage, she took me up a few gears in a short time. Ben Conn, he had so much belief in me which is so important. Jody Hartstone, a great friend, mentor and a huge help with the horses, particularly my tricky ones.

Photo: Libby Law Photography

Kieryn Walton WHY DRESSAGE?

When I was eventing, I loved the dressage phase and had trained my three-star eventer to level 4. He was doing sequence changes, but I confess they were pretty bad looking back! Then, after an eventing crash, I decided to switch to dressage in 2000.

CURRENT SQUAD HORSE? Rosari Don Carlos – a Hanoverian bred by Fiona McCrostie.

HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR SPORT?

I support as many shows with a team of horses as I can, mostly something like writing at a show, which I enjoy, it’s a great chance to get insight into the judging. I am the New Zealand Warmblood Society Secretary, and I sponsor events.

HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR DRESSAGE CAREER?

34 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2020

I am a full-time Police Detective

These days I’m pretty much a sole operator. I spend a lot of time on my own and don’t have a lot of coaching mainly due to work, my Owhango location and time constraints. Still, I love sitting down with the people I do work with, Hubertus Hufendeik, Christine Weal, Jody Hartstone, and chatting for hours about horses, dressage and what keeps us all going.

YOUR TYPICAL DAY? All going well, get up at 4.45am, do a 5-7km run on the treadmill, shower and be at work by 7.45am. Work until 4 pm, head home and ride as many horses as I possibly can! I have six in work this season, so inside late, eat, sleep, repeat! When I am without help, it’s worse!

YOUR PEARL OF WISDOM? Don’t expect anything to be easy or handed to you; it doesn’t mean as much if it is, work hard, then work harder, and your successes will feel so much better.

WHY DRESSAGE?

I grew up and still live across the road from Judy Matthews. I would go over to her place after school and muck out in return for lessons from her German riders. I started off riding the breakers and the competition horses as a teenager. I helped with hacking out and eventually started to compete. They were so beautiful, and it just progressed from there.

CURRENT SQUAD HORSE? Fanfare MH

HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR SPORT? Teaching, and encouraging people to give dressage a go.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING WITH YOUR LIFE AND WEEKENDS IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE HORSES?

I have young kids and a husband, so I’d say we would be going on way more holidays with all the money saved from not spending it on horses!

HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR DRESSAGE CAREER? I school horses to help me fund my own horses. I’m also fortunate to have owners who help me with training and competition. I will probably need to sell my horses at some point to help fund the next one though.

36 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2020

I have a few different days. My son goes to daycare for two days a week, and once I drop him off, I come straight home and work as many horses as possible at my place and at Matthews Hanoverians before I need to pick him up. The other days I work either a morning or an afternoon riding at Matthews and then home again for my horses. I try to keep a lot of time spare for my kids, they are young, and I love hanging out with them!

YOUR MAIN EQUESTRIAN AND DRESSAGE INFLUENCERS Judy Matthews without a doubt. She has put so much time and trust into me and I have been so blessed to have her in my life.

YOUR DREAM JOB I have my dream job, riding horses!

WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT DRESSAGE? Progress. I love looking back and seeing how far the horses have come.

HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR DRESSAGE CAREER? I am an Accountant currently studying to become a Chartered Accountant.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST HORSE THAT YOU FOUND SUCCESS ON AND WHAT MADE THAT HORSE SO SPECIAL? Animation. I saw him in the paddock at Matthews Hanoverians when I was 16 and fell in love with this big black beautiful horse. Judy kept him for a year for me when I went from ponies to hacks. We won many young rider titles, and he was the first horse I got to wear tails on.

PERSONAL BESTS FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE RIDERS Marlborough's Melissa Galloway and New South Wales based John Thompson have both come out firing at the first shows of the new season. Melissa headed across Cook Strait in October and claimed five victories from five Grand Prix level starts at Central Districts and Bay of Plenty Kiwi Arena Rakes Premier League events. We touched base with Melissa while she was on the ferry home from a fantastic few weeks competing up north! Melissa was brimming with excitement after her trip.

72.15% was a really special way to finish the trip with him.

John says Tommy is starting to show more strength in all the Grand Prix work and hopes to have his next starts at Clarendon and then on to the Victorian Dressage Festival, subject however to the regional Covid status at the time. It is still unclear what CDI events are going to be available for Oceania riders leading up to possible Olympic Games in 2021 as they look to achieve qualifying scores and meet the NZOC criteria.

Vianne Downs and Donatello Braveheart Photo: Belinda Pratt

Solway College was delighted to welcome 137 riders from throughout the Lower North Island to their seventh annual inter-schools dressage event this year at the historic Solway Showgrounds. Twenty-two teams plus many individual riders came from throughout the wider Wairarapa, Wellington, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay regions 42 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2020

he event, which took place on Monday 19th October, was a huge success with riders ranging 5 years to 18 years from primary, intermediate and senior schools competing in two dressage tests each. Solway College Principal Janine Tupaea said she was thrilled with the event and enjoyed seeing all the riders and parents from different communities coming together for this special event. “We were delighted with the support for the event this year from our school helpers, riders, parents, supporters, volunteers, judges and many sponsors who kindly donated prizes. The event would not be possible without the dedicated time and commitment from our parentled organising committee, so we would like to extend a huge thank you to those involved.” “We recognise that some combinations have once again travelled significant distances to represent their school this year and would like to thank them for once again supporting this fantastic event.” Solway College Equestrian Academy Manager, Elle Ifill, said that this year four teams from their school competed, consisting of Year Photo: Belinda Pratt

7 to Year 13 students and that she was delighted with the achievements of their riders with some fantastic team and individual results. “Vianne Downs won the Overall Local Junior Rider competition, as well as placing fourth in both the Junior and Senior competitions in her teams. She was riding two ponies so had a very busy day! Solway Silver (Freya Diggle, Vianne Downs, Dani Simmons) were fourth in the senior teams division and Solway Navy (Ella Bashford, Amelia Heathcote and Vianne Downs) placed fourth in the Junior teams division. Ella Bashford finished 6th in the Overall Junior competition, and many of our riders scored top 6 finishes. The Equestrian Academy has grown significantly over the last couple of years and has seen our riders grow in confidence and skill. It’s great to see the hard work and determination start to pay off in the girls’ results thanks to our wonderful Academy coaches Tinks Pottinger (Olympic Bronze Medallist Eventer) and Kate Tobin (Grand Prix and FEI Dressage rider).” This year Solway College introduced a new division specifically for Lead Rein riders, meaning that for many of the children this was their first ever time having a go at riding a dressage test.

“It was exciting to introduce this new class and to see the more experienced competitors helping the younger, less experienced riders out. The feedback has been great from this year’s show and it was so great to see so many smiling faces out there,” said Elle.

THE RESULTS WERE AS FOLLOWS:

Champion Team Presentation: Whitby Collegiate Senior: Rebecca Mobberley, Madeleine Leslie, Augusta Hampton Champion Individual Lead Rein: Sienna Stevens (Pangoma) Champion Team Lead Rein: Fairfield Fusion (Summer Bethwaite, Kendall Hamilton and Isabella Phillips) Champion Junior Teams: Nga Tawa Junior 2 (Eva van den Brink, Molly Coutts, Gemma Lovewell) Champion Senior Team: Whitby Collegiate Senior (Rebecca Mobberley, Madeleine Leslie, Augusta Hampton) Top Local Junior Rider: Vianne Downs (Solway College) Top Local Senior Rider: Rebecca Mobberley (Whitby Collegiate) Overall Junior Rider: Eva van den Brink (Nga Tawa) Overall Senior Rider Champion: Rebecca Mobberley (Whitby Collegiate)

hirty-nine young riders from as far afield as Northland to Wairarapa, Taranaki in the west and Hawke’s Bay in the east converged on the Taupo NEC during the first weekend in October for the Pryde’s Easifeed North Island Young Rider Development Camp. Combined with the twenty-nine in the South Island the week before this resulted in sixty-eight combinations, by far the largest annual ever number benefitting from the programme this year.

Three ESNZ technical coaches were utilized, Christine Weal, Debbie Barke and Penny Castle – all very experienced trainers and competitors. Lucarne Dolley, the current Under 25 Grand Prix Champion and one of the youngest riders in New Zealand to have trained their own horse through the grades to Grand generously bought Ardmore across from the Waikato to inspire the youngsters. contributed to the off-horse camp topics as did Katie Bird Equine Sports Therapies, Ashleigh Kendall, mental coach from Dreamtime Dressage, and Caitlin Benzie. Tony Moore and Jonathan McNeill from Pryde’s Easifeed were both at the camp, guiding riders through the ever-important topic of horse and pony nutrition, tailored for the specific needs of the individual equine to optimize equine health and performance. The distinctive Pryde’s sponsored pink caps and stylish branded t-shirts were a real hit with the riders, as were the bags of Pryde’s Polish. A huge thanks to Pryde’s Easifeed for their ongoing support of Young Rider Dressage Development.

C VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH TRACY BELESKI Sponsored by Big Barrel Article by Celine Filbee

eline Filbee chatted with Ian Childs, President of Dressage Wellington at the recent FEI Dressage World Challenge and managed to learn more about one of Wellington’s most valued but most unassuming volunteers. He described her as “ totally unflappable but cares intently about the group and event presentation”. One of the other group members called Tracy the “quiet achiever”. There was much conjecture around how long Tracy has been secretary and we landed at twentyfive years. She first got involved through her good friend Jacqui Thompson who asked her to help out. Over the next twentyfive years Tracy has evolved into secretary extraordinaire, winning Dressage NZ Volunteer of the Year in 2012. Everyone Celine spoke to at Dressage Wellington gave glowing reports about Tracy’s huge contribution to their group. As group operations manager for Power Systems Consultants, her day job aligns well with running horse shows. Managing global operations across seven countries requires efficiency to say the least. Tracy was very modest about the scope of this job when questioned. Tracy said she very much enjoys the people side of her volunteer role and loves working with the Dressage Wellington committee, who she describes as “hardworking, engaged and passionate about Dressage” When not working Tracy loves gardening. She has a whopping acre of coastal garden which includes vegetables and a glasshouse where she grows salad greens and tomatoes.

OFFICIAL OF THE MONTH IAN CHILDS Sponsored by AR Dressage Article by Celine Filbee

I

an is one of those blokes that you cannot help but like. He is modest, funny, lively and a real energiser. He calls himself a diehard Wellingtonian that lives in the Wairarapa but is president of Wellington Dressage Group and acts as area judges office for Wairarapa Dressage. This resonated with me as an unique commitment to dressage volunteering. Ian said he enjoys leading the Wellington group because they are cohesive and passionate about getting things done, he did admit that this passion needed to be reined in occasionally! Wairarapa are also a driven unit and acknowledged that they have a strong leader in Wendy Jeffery who he said was amazing and incredible to work with. Ian has been a judge for forty plus years. He does a considerable amount of traveling around NZ to officiate at both Dressage and Horse Trials and even slips in the odd Carriage Driving gig. He enjoys fence judging at Horse Trials as it gives him a real all-round view of the horses. He has stewarded in Australia, can be wrestled into acting as TD and he is pretty slick on the OC breakfast fry-up, so he is a well-rounded recidivist official and volunteer! Ian managed two high performing jewellery shops for sixteen years, working serious hours each day, with a long commute. At fifty he decided it was time for a change. He then spent three years

retraining as a nurse and now holds a Bachelor of Health Science and is a registered nurse. He works in the community health sector as an assessor, working with a wide range of clients from the very young and vulnerable, disabled and the elderly. This gives some insight into why Ian is such a likeable and well-liked person; his people skills are well honed. When interviewing him it was clear that he his goal and value driven, passionate, empathetic and not afraid to take on big challenges in life.

Ian recently took up riding again. After giving up competing across all disciplines when he was thirty, he is unsure if he will end up back in the competition arena, but is happy riding recreationally for now, but admitted a cottage in the country with a horse in the paddock is his rose coloured dream. Ian is the recipient of this month’s AR Dressage Official’s prize. For further information on AR Dressage contact Andrea at tetch@xtra.co.nz.
