Police commissioner concerned about increasing crime

Three different fires in a matter of days

This bus which went up in flames on the Mooderfontein off-ramp added to two more fires in recent days. The bus driver noticed smoke engulfing part of the bus, brought it to a halt, and ordered all passengers to take their baggage and get out. Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the bus caught fire due to a technical problem. Photo: Supplied Andries van der Heyde A shack in Koppewaai was destroyed by a fire. Officials from the Bela-Bela Local Council visited the scene to assess te damage on Monday 4 June. Among these was the speaker, Zakes Moeletsi, officials from the communications division and risk

management. Unconfirmed reports suggest the police might be asked to investigate alleged arson. Shack owner, Salome Mahladisha, chose not to comment. Risk management head, Thipe Dlamini, promised Mahladisha that the municipality would provide building material in a matter of a couple of days.

He also promised to engage the Home Affairs Department, to assist in replacing her ID book which was burnt in the fire. Dlamini further said he would engage the South African Social Security Agency to provide food parcels for the family. Police are investigating. Another fire destroyed part of the Kingfisher Nest Guest House on the Thabazimbi road.

As part of the broader Africa Month Celebrations, Modimolle’s Black Lives Matter Foundation would be hosting one of the worldwide renowned poets, Mutabaruka at the local Phagameng Township. The Music and Literature Festival will be held at Lekkerbreek Primary School on Friday 8 June, starting at 6:30pm. Local artists and poets will also have an opportunity to perform alongside the Jamaican poet. Born Allan Hope, Mutabaruka focuses on, among other issues, politics, culture, social oppression and discrimination. Black Lives Matter Foundation chairperson Zunaid Mosam said the event would serve to celebrate Africa and further raise awareness on the broader continental discourse. He said the event would help locals to better understand what the struggles of the African continent were all about. Mosam said people from neighbouring areas including Bela Bela, Mookgophong and Vaalwater were expected to be part of this event. “This is one of many other activities that we will be doing in and around Modimolle, to empower the locals with knowledge,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe. Photo: Supplied Lizzy Bapela The police in Limpopo have expressed concern at the steady escalation of crime across the Modimolle-Mookgophong area. Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nneke Ledwaba, was particularly concerned about criminality across the Modimolle cluster. The commisioner’s port of entry was a whistle-stop tour of Mookgophong, whereby the provincial leadership engaged communities on Friday 1 June. Ledwaba identified certain disturbing and prevalent trends, such as protesting communities disrupting schooling. Other areas of concern were

incidents of domestic violence, drug abuse and other substances. The entourage also visited some schools, to encourage learners to stay away from criminality. The Department of Education, among other stakeholders, was also in attendance. During the visit, the commissioner also conferred ranks to the newly-promoted police officers. Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, was promoted to the rank of a full colonel. Ngoepe joined the ranks of the SAPS in 1985. Ledwaba urged the police officers to work even harder.

Manhunt for farm attack suspects Lizzy Bapela The police in Limpopo have launched a manhunt for three suspects linked to a farm attack in Vaalwater. A 70-year-old pensioner was robbed of valuables during the attack on Friday 1 June. One of the four suspects, a 33year-old male person, was arrested. Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said a 70-year-old farmer was surprised by four armed intruders, while walking around the farm. The suspects frog-marched him into the farmhouse, whereby they robbed him of jewellery, four firearms, a Ford

Ranger bakkie and an undisclosed amount of cash, before they fled the scene. “The police were notified and reacted swiftly and managed to arrest the suspect within a short space of time,” Ngoepe said. He said during the arrest, allegedly stolen items, including R8 500 in cash and two toy guns were recovered. The arrested suspect was expected to appear before the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court this week, on a charge of house robbery. Anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of the three other suspects is advised to contact Warrant Officer Johannes Metheus Keyter at 082 565 8637, or crime stop number 0860010111, or the crime line SMS at 32211.

Modimolle-Mookgophong under administration The BEAT Team The unprecedented placing of the Mookgophong-Modimolle Local Municipality under provincial administration has been welcomed allround. The provincial legislature placed the embattled municipality under administration, in terms of Section 139 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. In a nutshell, the Constitution empowers the province to act in the event that a municipality cannot and/or does not fulfil an executive obligation, among others. The Limpopo provincial legislature said in a statement it had resolved to place the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality under administration. “The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality is experiencing serious institutional, financial and governance challenges,” the statement charged. The legislature further explained that the municipality was characterized by high vacancy rates at senior management level, “wherein only two out of seven positions are filled.” The province said the municipality was technically “bankrupt”, and that it owed power utility Eskom more than R260 million, which the legislature noted was “the highest in the province”. The debt towards Magalies Water Board exceeded R12-million, the statement explained. Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor, Marlene van Staden, welcomed the news of the placing of the municipality under administration.

In the previous week tyres and logs went up in flames in the embattled municipality. Photo: Marietjie Steenkamp “The decision comes after several appeals for help by the mayor, to various provincial and national departments, in light of the serious institutional, financial and governance challenges faced by the municipality,” she said. Van Staden said the challenges included, among others, various requests for help with regards to the validity and duration of the previous municipal manager’s employment contract. She said the new council inherited a

municipality with serious systemic challenges after years of alleged maladministration and financial mismanagement. The mayor said since the election of council dating back to 2016, the ability of the council to conduct oversight over the financial affairs of the municipality was “severely hamstrung by the inability or refusal” of senior officials to report to the mayor, executive committee and council on a regular basis.”

She said this was especially true with regards to the statutory obligation to account for “unauthorised, irregular or fruitless and wasteful expenditure”, and other crucial financial reports on the income and expenditure of the municipality. With the assistance of an administrator and a support team, the mayor was confident the Modimolle-Mookgophong municipality would enter a new phase of financial stability, increased service delivery and infrastructure development.

Mzamane Ringane Modimolle-based cultural group, Dinaledi tsa Setso (stars of culture), has vowed to be the advocates of unity by enhancing cultural diversity within the community. Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the Waterberg Traditional Health Practitioners committee recently, the cultural group’s leader, Katlego Leikay Marema, said it was important for South Africans to embrace all cultures and promote cultural diversity.

The group was founded by Marema, working with cultural activist and secretary, Tshidi Sebola. “We did not form the group with the intention to make money. The objective was to remind young people that culture and tradition remain important,” he said. Marema told The Beat they also strive to develop individual talent, and allow artists to spread their wings when they feel ready to initiate individual projects. “When we started this group in 2014, we realised that young people in Modimolle needed a home, where they can be given a chance to express themselves, and stay away

SASSA clarifies recipients following ‘fake’ SMS Mzamane Ringane The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) expressed concern over a growing trend of SMS messages, being circulated to grant beneficiaries and subsequently causing confusion among people across the country. According to SASSA, the recent messages sent to beneficiaries instruct them to re-register their social grants because cash pay-points will be fully phased-out by August 2018. “The contents of this SMS are misleading and cause unnecessary confusion and panic among social grant beneficiaries. Beneficiaries are urged to ignore this message as it is incorrect,” SASSA said in a statement. SASSA has indicated that contrary to this SMS message, beneficiaries do not have to re-register their grants. They are, however, requested to swap their old cards for the new SASSA card by the end of September 2018. This can be done by visiting all local SASSA offices, pay-points or

from crime and drug abuse,” he said. Apart from the popular Setswana dance and song routines, the group also performs other dances borrowed from the XiTsonga, isiZulu and Sepedi cultures. Marema made a plea to the community of Modimolle, including government departments and the private sector to support them as they battle to shape the lives of no less than 45 young people. selected South African Post Office outlets. The social security agency said cash paypoints will be gradually reduced, and not fully phased out as alleged in the SMS. This new system will allow beneficiaries to choose the method of payment that they are comfortable with, between direct deposit into a personal bank account (including PostBank), using their SASSA cards to withdraw at ATM machines and wholesalers across South Africa. “Should a beneficiary choose to have their grant deposited directly into their personal bank account they should go to the SASSA office. This form must be completed by their bank of choice and returned to SASSA,” SASSA advised. The agency reassured beneficiaries they will continue to receive their social grants beyond August 2018, and that it will make efforts to ensure that the transition of beneficiaries from cash pay-points, to electronic methods of payments, happens smoothly and without any difficulties.

Your favourite newspaper, together with sister publication, Die Pos/The Post, have been shortlisted for the category of best headline-writing. The BEAT editor, Johnny Masilela, was quick to attribute the nomination to “a team effort”. “From time to time I would come up with a headline for the front page, and would seek the opinion of the reporters as to the intended effect. Yes indeed, this is a team effort,” he said. The BEAT is on the best headline-writing shortlist alongside editors from Die Pos/ The Post, Vaalweekblad, The Village News. Kalahari Bulletin, Bloemfontein Courant, Roodepoort Northsider and Potchefstroom Herald. Masilela, the reigning Caxton Excellence Awards Best

The awards had received entries from upwards of 130 journalists from more than 80 local newspapers, in all the nine provinces. In unveiling the shortlists, Groenewald said the impression of the judges was that local newspapers were still very much alive in South Africa. “They are indeed serving their communities very well,” he declared. Die Pos/The Post editor, Keina Swart, has also been shortlisted in the category of best headlinewriting. Swart and her colleagues, Willie Nel, is on the shortlist for best front page design, while reporter Ronél van Jaarsveld was shortlisted in the category of hard news. Praise for achievers Lizzy Bapela Children marched to highlight their plight. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Limpopo MEC for Social Development, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, has come out guns blazing, warning those who abuse children would face the full might of the law. In a statement dispatched ahead of Child Protection Week, she warned potential culprits they would be arrested and punished. The statement was released against the backdrop of the Child Protection Week held from Sunday 27 May to Sunday 3 June. The theme of this year’s event was “Let us protect all children to move South

Africa forward”. Departmental spokesperson, Adele van der Linde, said the events were held to educate and mobilize communities to take responsibility towards children’s protection and care. She said the department continued with such programs to visit schools and engage various groups within communities. Van der Linde further said the department had dispatched a team of subject matter experts and social workers, who work within the Child Protection unit to speak to communities. In Bela-Bela the event was held at the Antioch River Church on Friday 1 June.

Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni has showered praises on several local achievers, among them cricket batsman par excellence AB de Villiers. The BEAT carried a story in the last edition quoting former caddies and golfers travelling down memory lane, back to the days when De Villiers used to play a fine swing of golf at the now collapsed Warmbaths Golf Course. Speaking on the occasion of his budget speech at the local Multi-Pupose Centre, the mayor praised De Villiers, who dropped a bomshell announcing his retirement from international cricket. “We feel particularly blessed with the appointment of Pinky Kekana, the Bela-Bela native, as the deputy minister of communications,” he said. Kekana is a former Waterberg District Mayor. He also used the opportunity to welcome incoming

municipal manager, Michael Makhubela, chief cinancial officer, Melvin Marutha, and corporate services head, Jamela Selapyane. Ngobeni also went lyrical about other hometown achievers, among them Limpopo’s Baobabs netball sensation, Grace Lechaba, and the socialite Semakaleng Mothapo, for being part of a delegation of South Africans to the Young African Leaders Initiative scheduled for the US. On a political note, Ngobeni bode official farewell to former DA Councillor, Kobus van der Merwe. “He was a very colourful character and persuasive individual. We will surely miss his robust input in council sittings and other developmental engagements,” the mayor said. Other individuals to which he paid tribute included young soccer goal-minder, Thabang Simelane, who was headed for trials with the Polokwane City Football Club’s development structures.

Three-day mountain-bike race in Bela Bela, Limpopo, from Friday to Sunday. Photo: Supplied TK Mashaba It’s all systems go for the opening stage of Liberty Waterberg Encounter mountainbike event scheduled to get under way from Friday 8 June to Sunday 10 June. Organisers have observed that the new single-track finish would be an endurance test for the front-runners, who were expected to be on high alert. The three-day stage race in Bela-Bela, will see the routes taking cyclists through Sondela Nature Reserve and Elements Private Golf Reserve.

Route director Mel Meyer said the stages would cover a total of 172-km with 2 774-metres of ascent. He offered the perfect workout for all riders, “but one they will be able to manage”. Meyer said they had introduced two changes to the opening stage, which should give the riders something to think about. “On the first day, the route up to the second water point is the same as last year, but then they will experience something new,” he said. He explained that a fresh trail of single-track on a 6-km section had been built. Humbled by FCJ Excellence Awards shortlist My attempts at writing dates back to my boyhood at Ribane-Laka High School in the Pretoria township of Mamelodi. At the time English grammar teacher, Odrie Mamabolo, selected my essay as the best of the class. She urged me to consider journalism as a career. The rest is history. In later years more inspiration came from erstwhile editor-in-chief of the popular Reader’s Digest (Southern Africa), Wendy Morgenrood. The good lady had read a column I wrote for the Pretoria News. She suggested I consider researching and writing fiction, but do it around real-life characters. One thing led to the other and my very first short story — titled “Baba Mfundisi, the clergyman “ — was published in an anthology called “Crossing Over: Stories from a new South Africa (Kwela Books)”. Since then I published several other short fiction, some of which has been translated into Dutch, Swedish, Danish and Afrikaans. Enter my Pretoria-based buddy, the mediccum-filmmaker, Dr Gomolemo Mokae. The man suggested I try my hand at screenwriting, although I had no clue what a film script looked like. Months down the line Gomolemo was breathing on my neck, so to speak, urging me to send a short film story idea to the M-

It all starts with the printing press. Print press. Photo: Google Net New Directions Short Film initiative. The result was that after workshops and shortlists starting at regional level, with mine being Johannesburg, I ended up one of eight finalists flown to Cape Town for the final stretch. At the end of it all my screenplay, “Christmas with Granny”, was selected and made into a short film. I was really humbled. Now as early as last Friday 1 June, my colleague and the editor at Die Pos/The Post, Keina Swart, dispatched a list of names shortlisted for the FCJ Excellence Awards. No less than five of us at the two

newspapers had been nominated for these prestigious awards. The finalists from our side include Keina, photographer Herman Steyn, the go-getter reporter Ronél van Jaarsveld, graphic designer par excellence Willie Nel, and myself. I for one was nominated once again for Best Columnist (Die Pos/The Post), and also for the category of best headline writer. I am still humbled after being named the Caxton Excellence Awards Best Columnist in recent months. Like the Caxton awards, the FCJ

Excellence Awards are dead serious business. More than 130 journalists from more than 80 newspapers countrywide had sent in entries. Veteran journalist and former Press Ombudsman Joe Tlholoe, chaired one of the various categories. The judging for the scores of categories was conducted in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the North West University’s Potchefstroom campus. Leriba Hotel and Spa in Centurion here we come!

TK Mashaba The Bela-Bela Soccer Academy is breaking ground on all fronts. The academy’s under-15 squad recently qualified for the Waterberg leg of the Copa Coca Cola Cup. The senior team continued to top the standings at the Bela-Bela Local Football Association (LFA), with an eye to be promoted to the Waterberg SAB Regional League. Bela-Bela Soccer Academy’s under-15 squad was now billed to represent the local cluster at the Waterberg regional showdown. If the academy does well at this stage, then they proceed to showcase their skills at provincial level. The youngsters qualified after beating

Settlers Agricultural High School 10-1, and walloping Solomon Mahlangu High School 3-1. The regional showdown was scheduled to take place at the Settlers Agricultural High School grounds on Saturday 9 June. Bela-Bela Soccer Academy mentor, Sam Modise, said he was happy at the progress made by the different age group squads. “This year we want to qualify for the national finals in both the under-15 Copa Coca Cola Cup, and the under-19 Kay Motsepe Cup,” he said. Bela-Bela Soccer Academy features, among its ranks, Gontse Molokomme, who played for the national under-17 squad in 2017.
