Reporter charged R70 for doing her job

Municipality withdraws case

Lizzy Bapela was turned back at the event. Photo: TK Mashaba

TK Mashaba The BEAT reporter Lizzy Bapela was turned away from taking pictures at a community choirs’ festival at the Bela-Bela Township’s multi-purpose centre. Bapela said she was invited at the event by one of the officials. However, when she arrived at the entrance a doorman insisted that entry fee was R70. When she explained that she was from a newspaper, the doorman summoned another lady from inside the hall. “The lady made it very clear I either paid the R70 entry fee or would not be allowed into the hall,” she said. The BEAT editor, Johnny Masilela, said many community-based events management companies did not understand the benefits of a close relationship with the media. Well-placed companies nationally and

internationally set aside massive budgets to attract the attention of the media, he explained. “For instance, when I was a younger reporter I attended many soccer matches at Loftus Versfeld Stadium and elsewhere hosted by one or another sponsor, feted in the most luxurious suites,” he said. He said even at the local level politicians and many community-based groupings made a continued footpath into The BEAT offices, because they understand the benefits of working with a widely-read newspaper. Masilela suggested it was in the best interests of those who hosted the choirs’ festival event to engage with the newspaper, to chart the way forward. “Otherwise it would be impossible to dispatch a reporter to events where they are expected to part with money,” Masilela added.

TK Mashaba The Bela-Bela Local Municipality has withdrawn a case of trespassing against Sello Moswoeu of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The case was a sequel to a land grab programme on the Alma Road by members of the EFF. The municipality had at the time opened a case of trespassing against Moswoeu, the EFF’s Bela-Bela co-ordinator. The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court removed the case from the roll on Tuesday 24 April. Municipal spokesperson Kabelo Mosito confirmed the decision to withdraw the

charges. He said the decision followed a mediation process between the two parties. Mosito said Moswoeu had made a written undertaking to stop the illegal occupation of land. Moswoeu extended his gratitude towards the municipality for the decision to withdraw the charges. “To my surprise when I attended court, I was informed the case had been withdrawn by the municipality,” he said. He told The BEAT he still believed the homeless had the right to take occupation of unused land. His’s first court appearance was on Friday 1 December last year.

Armed robbery warnings for Radium TK Mashaba The police in Bela-Bela have warned motorists about incidents of armed robberies outside of Radium and the Mantsole truck stop. In recent dispatched crime hints, the SAPS warned motorists to avoid stopping on the R101 between Radium

and Manstole, from which incidents of armed robberies had been reported. “The community is also warned against stopping along the N1from Mantsole toll plaza to Kranskop toll plaza, and R101 from Maubane off-ramp and Radium complex, as robberies with firearms are taking place there,” the police warned. The statement also offered valuable tips on how to avoid being a victim of

criminality, such as avoiding drinking and driving. Also, the police have advised motorists to park their vehicles in well-lit spaces. Valuable tips were also on offer for pedestrians, who have been warned to never walk alone at night, especially in dark and isolated areas. Safety awareness at households was also under the spotlight, with the police warning

Mayor Marlene van Staden received the memorandum of demands from local residents, led by forum chairperson Sepeke Manamela (right). Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane The Modimolle Local Economic Development Forum led a march which comprised of residents from both Vaalwater and Modimolle, to press home service delivery demands on Wednesday 25 April. Concerned residents gathered on the local Peter Nchabeleng Community Hall, with the procession later marching down Joe Slovo Street to downtown Modimolle. Mayor Marlene van Staden received the memorandum at the local municipality’s headquarters. Police kept a watchful eye during the proceedings, with two Nyala armoured personnel carriers among other marked SAPS vehicles. Chief among the grievances was the dumping sites at Modimolle’s Extension 10 and Extension 3 in Mabatlane, which have been a burning issue for the people in the vicinity. The forum said in a memorandum that the

authorities have been engaged on numerous occasions on the issue of these sites, which were reportedly posing a health risk to the locals. Other issues included street lights which are not working in most sections of Phagameng, potholes on local roads, and the demand for clean running water. It was further demanded that the municipality give urgent attention to the four-way cross road between Extension 10 and Extension 9, by erecting traffic-calming speed humps. The malfunctioning traffic lights on the main Nelson Mandela Drive downtown also became an issue of concern. The forum’s chairperson, Sepeke Manamela, lambasted the municipality for failing to address concerns such as unemployment. “We are not fighting the municipality or anybody, but poor service delivery,” he said. The mayor promised to respond to the memorandum shortly.

people against hiding door keys under doormats. The police also warned that the purchase and possession of stolen goods was a criminal offence. As for criminal activity at auto-teller machines, the police warned that criminals worked in groups, with one culprit aiming to distract an ATM user, while the other steals the bank card.

Mzamane Ringane The police have confirmed an investigation into apparent arson following the burning down of the Mookgophong licensing office, against the backdrop of an alleged corruption probe. Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said a case of arson had been opened. He cautioned, however, that the cause of the fire was still unknown, pending further investigations. Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden has vowed that the administration would not rest until corruption was rooted out. Ngoepe said in a recent statement that the police and fire brigade were called to the scene, after the security personnel on the premises noticed a flame blazing from the top of the roof.

The building went up in flames, just after transport authorities had closed down operations, pending alleged fraud investigations into the issuing of driver’s and learner’s licences. Upwards of 100 licences were allegedly issued unlawfully. “While the reasons for the alleged torching of the office is still to be determined, it is highly concerning that the section targeted is the same one that was shut down earlier this month by the Department of Transport’s Anti-Fraud and Corruption Unit,” van Staden said. The mayor disclosed that a number of municipal officials have been implicated regarding allegations of wrong-doing in the issuing of driver’s and learner’s licences. She added that a full investigation into the arson attack has been launched, and the specialised arson forensic team from Gauteng will be leading the investigation.

Limpopo is oh so proud of homegrown TRV band Mzamane Ringane TRV Live Band from Modimolle has broken significant ground on the national music circuit, emerging third from a tightlycontested battle of the bands held in Johannesburg on Friday 27 April. The musical ensemble, which is also known as The Rudiments Virtuoso Live Band, was part of a total of eight bands drawn largely from Gauteng to compete for the first prize of R25 000 and a recording deal. The 2018 Back to the City Festival also featured various other genres such as performing artists, deejays, graffiti artists and break dancers. As part of the multi-layered judging process, the panel also drew inspiration from the reaction of the broader audience to a presentation, meaning TRV Live Band made huge impact with mainly Gauteng-based crowds. One other judging criteria was that participating artists and groups had to perform their own unique compositions. The ballad “Gae Limpopo (Limpopo our home)”, was a hit with especially members of the audience having left Limpopo to seek opportunities in Gauteng. Speaking to The BEAT on the sidelines of a packed welcome gig at Modimolle’s Hapido Café in Phagameng Township on Sunday 29 April, TRV Live Band lead singer, John Mabusha, said the song managed to win the hearts of many in the big city. “We realised that many people loved this song. It made them feel like they were home. People loved our performance and we appreciate the support,” he said. Mabusha said the future looks even brighter, considering the fact that they were entering the competition for the first time but

managed to fight all the way to the top three. Several locals accompanied the band to Johannesburg, and they liked what they experienced. Alfred Madampi Maremane called on locals to support the band as it continues to make Limpopo proud. “I would simply say our local band has

not failed (by obtaining third position), but instead they achieved something that will shape them going forward. Performing at the event of that magnitude for the first time and coming out third is a positive sign,” he said. Mpho Molekoa said it was a great experience to travel all the way to Gauteng

in support of the beloved TRV Live Band. “I think every experience grooms TRV even further. Last year they had an amazing performance at Mapungubwe Arts Festival, and this year they outclassed themselves at the Back to the City Festival. I can safely say they are going places,” she said.

Firefighters gear up for pre-season training Lizzy Bapela Limpopo’s Working on Fire (WoF) unit was this week gearing up for the so-called 2018 Yellow Card Training Camp ahead of the dry winter fire season. The firefighters have been hard at work during the last few months, as they were busy preparing for the 2018 Winter Fire Season, which officially kicks off on Friday 1 June. About 600 firefighters stationed at 25 bases throughout the province are busy preparing for the Yellow Card Training Camps (YCTC), which were scheduled to start from Wednesday 2 May to Wednesday 9 May in Tzaneen and Vaalwater. WoF spokesperson, Matema Gwangwa, said the camps were aimed at ensuring firefighters

were ready ahead of the fire season. She explained that during the dress rehearsals firefighters would be taken through exercises such as personal safety, and generally how to survive in case of being trapped in a dangerous situation. “Only firefighters who are professionally-trained to fight veld fires will be attending the camps. During the camps, firefighters will be assessed on their fitness levels and also their readiness to be able to be deployed to fires across the province, as and when needed,” Gwangwa said. WoF Limpopo has also welcomed its new general manager, Tshepo Malatji, who will be overseeing the smooth running of the yellow card training camps, and also the preparations for the winter fire season.

Must win for Limpopo’s top teams Mzamane Ringane A do-or-die battle awaits National First Division campaigners Black Leropards FC and two other Limpopo-based professional soccer teams. The Thohoyandou-based so-called Lidoda Duvha (day shall come), have a date with second-placed Jomo Cosmos FC on Sunday 6 May. Should Black Leopards FC lose the match, then there is a real chance that the team would miss out on the forthcoming promotional play-offs which might even earn them a place in the multi-million rand Premier Soccer League (PSL). Black Leopards FC failed to consolidate its position at number two after losing 2-1 to already-promoted Highlands Park FC. Chances going forward are that Jomo Cosmos FC might consider fielding a weaker side because the team is already guaranteed a place at the promotional play-offs, which might translate into an easy victory for Black Leopards FC. Having said that, in the same breadth, Jomo Cosmos FC might as well field their strongest team, as part of the preparations

professional status. Polokwane City FC is at position number 13 on the league log standings, just two points ahead of Free State Stars FC, which is fighting to move a notch up from number 15. To the contrary, Bela-Bela Soccer Academy has been on a high, with sensational midfielder Benencia Nku headed for trials at National Fisrt Division (NFD) campaigners, Jomo Cosmos FC. Bela-Bela Soccer Academy head coach, Sam Modise, said he hoped one or two of the players had the prospect to catch the eye of the Polokwane City FC development side technical staff. for the play-offs. Things were early this week not looking good too for Limpopo’s two PSL campaigners, Baroka FC and Polokwane City FC. Polokwane City has been slipping down the league log standings after two successive losses and a draw, leaving them at number 13. Should Polokwane City FC lose out to the high-flying Chippa United FC on Saturday 12 May, the former might slip to the relegation zone, with the real threat to be relegated to the lower ranks next season. Baroka FC might still look somewhat safe, but that also depends on permutations around other fixtures. The Ga-Mphahlele lads have to beat Supersport United FC to stay safe from relegation because a loss is a non-starter.
