Fears of growing squatting at Bela-Bela

Shacks were this week mushrooming on the new land. Photo: TK Mashaba

TK Mashaba Bela-Bela ward councillor Freddy Hlungwane has assured the homeless relocated from Dunuza, to a piece of land at the local Extension 8, no outsiders would be allowed to move in.

Several of the homeless were advised to relocate to the piece of land at Extension 8. The piece of land was officially earmarked for the building of a school. According to Hlungwane, the homeless would then be provided with housing as soon as an envisaged 500 RDP units had

been completed back at Dunuza. The RDPs were to be built back at the squatter’s original home at Dunuza. Hlungwane spoke to The BEAT against the backdrop of general concerns that as soon the homeless put up structurtes on a piece of land. Many others take advantage and flood

that particular area. This had the potential to trigger disputes over housing waiting lists. Hlungwane said a task team had been constituted to monitor the orderly movement of the homeless from Dunuza into the vicinity of the temporarily allocated piece of land.

Corruption charges combined Justin Steyn Two separate cases brought against allegedly corrupt Pienaarsrivier police officers were combined into one on Friday, 23 February. Constable Patrick Baloyi and

Sergeant Andries Matlala were expected to appear again before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 March. They face charges of allegedly accepting a bribe of R20 000 from motorist, Promise Funani. The alleged crime took place during a stop and search investigation, allegedly

by the two policemen. Funani was found by the law enforcers transporting loads of cash, apparently in the boot of the car he travelled in. Later that day Funani opened a case of theft of cash totalling R210 000 from his vehicle, allegedly by the two police officers. The twosome first appeared

before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 10 January. Baloyi and Matlala have since been released on bail of R3 000 each. Additionally, Baloyi has also been charged with corruption and bribery with regards to an incident that took place in 2016.

Maparangwa found guilty as charged Justin Steyn Convicted drug dealer Daniel Maparangwa (28) was found guilty by the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 21 February.

The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court gave judgement on the matter. The 28-year-old Zimbabwean national faced charges emanating from cases which took place between June and September in the year 2016. Maparangwa has since been released on

bail of R5 000, pending sentencing on Friday, 9 March. Meanwhile, in another prominent case alleged narcotics dealer, the Nigerian national Evy Ezeagbai was expected to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court in March.

An interpreter had to be assigned for the suspect. The Nigerian was facing charges of allegedly being in possession of 4.6 kg of CAT with a street value of R1,3-million. Ezeagbai was on bail of R30 000, as he was not deemed a flight risk.

Creepy snakes in your chicken coop! Justin Steyn Civil rights activist N J van Heerden and his workers stumbled into a visitor of the slithery kind in the form of a python, which had a hearty breakfast of two of his domestic chickens. The visitor was discovered in the early hours of Friday, 23 February. Tongue-in-cheek, van Heerden, the Change for Bela-Bela leader, said in an interview on Monday, 26 February, that as much as it was sad to have lost two of his chickens, he was “happy” that he had supplied the meal for the constrictor. The staff, visitors and inhabitants of the WaterFront Animal Farm and Nursery at Bela-Bela had the surprise of their lifetime when they stumbled into the 3,5-metre constrictor, struggling to slither away on a bellyful of live chickens. By then the python had breakfasted on two of the farm’s prized show roosters, apparently long before the pre-dawn cocks crowed. Van Heerden said the behemoth constrictor was found lazing from the previous night’s feasting. “She was found by one of our workers, and I was informed immediately. I did not expect

such a monster because we usually find snakes (other species) which are about a metre or so in length,” he said Van Heerden continued: “It’s all just part of the circle of life, and ever since we opened the farm, there have been a few strange animals around,” Van Heerden said. Snake catcher Ruan Venter, said the python had so much energy, and it had to be “tired out” before subdued and caught. “Despite having eaten two large chickens, she had to be tired out before she could be captured,” he said. When asked where the snake could have come from, the “snake man” said there was a game reserve and farms in the area which offer the perfect habitat for snakes to flourish. He said there was no need to press panic buttons after the discovery of the huge python. “There isn’t a snake invasion of some kind and the area is safe. I believe the snake happened to be in proximity where she could smell the livestock on the farm, and popped in for a little snack,” he said. Venter said the snake was caught and taken to a veterinarian in the area before being released into its natural habitat.

Walking for a healthy lifestyle

Government employees led by example when they took part in activities promoting a healthy lifestyle. Photo: Mzamane Ringane. Mzamane Ringane Members of the general public and civil servants took part in a fun walk hosted by the Waterberg Department of Health. This was part of the broader healthy lifestyle awareness activities held across the country last week. The event was hosted by the Waterberg Department of Health at Modimolle on Wednesday, 21 February. The fun walk commenced on the premises of the Waterberg District’s

Department of Health offices, and concluded at the local shopping centre, Modi Mall. As part of the broader day of fun, participants also took part in aerobics. The purpose of the awareness campaign was to encourage locals to live a healthy lifestyle. Participants were reminded that eating healthy food must be coupled with other activities such as daily exercise, and spending quality time with their families. The department’s manager of noncommunicable diseases, Edith Maleka,

Aerobics were part of the exercising activities during the healthy lifestyle awareness event. Photo: Mzamane Ringane said it was important for public servants to lead by example and commit themselves to healthy living. “We usually spread awareness in our communities, but this time around we thought it would be more significant if we take action and lead by example,” she said. Deputy Director for nutrition, Fredah Mashilo, emphasised that a balanced diet must always be coupled with physical activity. “Eating healthy does not have to be expensive. It is a matter of understanding the concept, in terms of how one should

eat. Balancing your meal with vegetables, coupled with protein and carbohydrate-rich food yields better results,” she said. Physiotherapist Ntsako Maswanganyi said being involved in physical activities had many benefits, including the decreased risk of high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, colon cancer and depression. “It will also be easier to motivate your children to be physically active, if you are already active as a parent. We need to have physically active children in order to manage among other challenges, childhood obesity which is rising,” Maswanganyi said.

when he joined the school in 2003 as a deputy principal, that he had an opportunity to work with then headmaster, Professor Johannes Seroto, who has since moved to the University of South Africa (UNISA). “In the five years that I worked with him, I learnt a lot of things regarding management and leadership. He liked sharing information. He told me that his ambition was not to remain a principal for life, so I had to learn twice as fast,” he said. Mahlahlani said when he was announced as the winner of the national accolade, he was overwhelmed with emotions during the moment which he described as a highlight of his career.

“There were nine finalists where each province was represented. After the third and second position winners had been announced, we knew that only one of us among (seven) will walk away with the main prize. It was the scariest moment for us all. I could not believe it when my name was announced as the big winner,” Mahlahlani said. The Mookgophong headmaster emphasized that the level of commitment that one invests in their job, will certainly yield positive results. TK Mashaba The Bonwa Phala Game Lodge outside Radium was the venue for the sending off of six graduates from the University of Venda (Univen) on Thursday, 15 February. Working in collaboration with the Bela-Bela Communal Property Association (CPA) and the School of Agriculture, Univen hosted the farewell for the students. The six had completed part of the requirements for the intensive Work Integrated Learning Programme, which started on 08 January until 16 February 2018. Certificates were awarded to the six

candidates. The purpose of the programme was to expose final-year students in the Department of Animal Science to day to day work in the agricultural sector. Programme co-ordinator, Kgabo Mahlako, said Univen chose Bela- Bela CPA because of the collective’s willingness to avail poultry facilities, as part of the training of the students. The students focused on daily management of laying hens. She further added that the purpose of the programme was to enable students to apply classroom knowledge in active farming environments.

TK Mashaba Spa Park’s wonder-boy Donnie Alberts is looking forward to playing a key role in the national beach soccer team, following excellent performances during a friendly match-up with Zanzibar. The South African Football Association (Safa) said in a recent statement that Alberts had scored “an outstanding goal” during the friendly match played in the Bububu town of Zanzibar on Sunday, 25 February. The Spa Park hero came in as a substitute to score the celebrated goal. The Bela-Bela Sporting FC player told The BEAT in an interview on Tuesday, 27 February, that there was talk in the national controlling body’s circles about

forthcoming selections for the national team. The selections were to be conducted in preparation for the Confederation of Southern African Football Association (Cosafa), and also the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup. “It was only a friendly match (against Zanzibar). It felt great getting another callup. I had a better game there and went on to score,” Alberts said. In the statement, Safa said the so-called beach soccer Bafana Bafana beat Zanzibar 6-0, with Alberts scoring a stunner in the 25th minute. Alberts was on his second call-up after being blooded into the national team in the year 2015, during Cosafa Cup qualifiers in Durban.
