Double tragedy for Polokwane family Lizzy Bapela The Mokonyamas of Mokopane are mourning the death of two of their family members who died following a fatal accident on the morning of Thursday, 12 April along the N1 South.

The accident took place a few kilometres outside of Polokwane. The families of Rubben Mokonyama (46), from Mahwelereng and Mummy Mokonyama (36), from Masehlaneng Village, positively identified the deceased family members. It is alleged that a police vehicle with two

The injured were rushed to hospital for further observation and treatment. Meanwhile, the other two occupants from the sedan vehicle and one of the police officers were on Tuesday 17 April still recuperating in hospital. “The other member of the SAPS was treated and discharged,” Ngoepe said.

police officers inside, was travelling from south to the north when it collided head-on with a VW Polo with four occupants inside. Limpopo police spokesperson, LieutenantColonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said two occupants from the sedan vehicle died instantly, while the other occupants and the two officers sustained serious injuries.

Crackdown on drug syndicates in Bela-Bela and Modimolle Lizzy Bapela The police in Limpopo believed they made a major breakthrough following the arrest of four alleged drug dealers in Bela-Bela and Limpopo. Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said there was a concerted effort to

eradicate “this dangerous phenomenon.” He said a joint intelligence-inspired operation had led to the removal of 39 balls of nyaope, each containing 850 satchets of the drug concoction. The whole consignment was estimated at a street value of R300 000. Four suspects between the ages of 25 and 33, were expected to appear before the courts in Bela-Bela and Modimolle shortly.

Murder case postponed TK Mashaba A man who has been charged with allegedly murdering his brother-inlaw has been remanded in custody. Bela-Bela’s Sammy Photoane, in his mid-forties, remained in custody and was expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 24 April. He first appeared in court on Monday 16 Monday. Photoane was expected to appear again in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on the main charge of alleged murder, and possibly for a formal bail application. Bela-Bela head of detectives,

Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, said the charges were a sequel to an alleged fist fight which took place in the early hours of Sunday 15 April. The unnamed victim was Photoane’s brother-in-law, who allegedly fell unconscious following the alleged fist fight. The incident occurred on the farmlands of Noodhulp on the southern fringes of downtown BelaBela. According to Phetla, when the victim fell unconscious, Photoane personally alerted the police about the tragedy. On arrival emergency services personnel declared the victim dead at the scene.

Two of the suspects were arrested along the N1 South between Pienaarsrivier and Bela-Bela, whilst the other two were arrested near the Kranskop Plaza, outside Modimolle on Monday, 16 April. Ngoepe said the syndicates were intercepted and their cars were pulled off the road at both areas while they were on their way to supply the drugs at various parts of the province.

Suspects in court for church break-in Lizzy Bapela Two suspects were expected to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Friday 20 April in connection with a case of a break-in at a church. It is alleged that the suspects broke into the Fraternal Full Gospel Church of Christ in Phomolong Extension 8 by breaking down a door on Thursday, 29 March 2018. The suspects stole two keyboards, a stand and mixer, a generator, cordless microphones, connection cables, several tools, and food from the crèche the church runs on its premises. Modimolle police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said an informer gave the police a tip off, alleging the twosome were spotted in the possession of suspected stolen goods. Investigations led to the arrest of the two

Decomposed body discovered in Vaalwater Lizzy Bapela The police in Vaalwater have launched a manhunt for suspects involved in a suspected murder, following the discovery of the decomposed body of a middle-aged male person.

The body, in a state of decomposition, was discovered by a passerby along the Boshoek dirt road last Friday 13 April. Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, LieutenantColonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said the passerby stumbled into the human body lying on the side of the road. According to Ngoepe the deceased was

The joint operation was composed of the Crime Intelligence Unit, the Provincial Drug Team and the Provincial Detectives. Meanwhile, in the Lephalale, Mahwelereng, Giyani, Makhado, Mankweng, Polokwane and Tzaneen Clusters, 16 suspects aged between 23 and 46 were arrested for the illegal possession of drugs and dagga.

men in the vicinity of Phagameng on Monday 2 April, who were allegedly caught redhanded in possession of the items stolen from the church premises. The two suspects were remanded in custody and were expected to appear in the Modimolle magistrate’s Court for bail application. Findlay said it was also discovered during investigations that one of the suspects was an alleged fugitive from the law, wanted for another housebreaking case by the Cleveland SAPS in Gauteng. The news of the church break-in was first broken by Fraternal Full Gospel Church of Christ, Bishop Samson Makwarela, by means of a letter addressed to both The BEAT and sister newspaper, Die Pos/The Post. In the letter Bishop Makwarela paid homage to the sterling work of the police, and urged the community to close ranks in fighting the scourge of crime.

wearing a light-blue long-sleeveed T-shirt, dark blue trousers, and a blue belt without shoes. Ngoepe said the identity of the deceased remained unknown, as was the motive behind the alleged murder. “The suspects in this matter are unknown and there is no arrest,” he said. “Anyone with information which can lead to

the arrest of the perpetrators involved in this murder, and who can assist in the identification of the deceased, may contact Detective Sergeant Oupa Koos Monyeki of the Vaalwater Police at 076 481 5356 or 076 733 0681 or the crime stop number 0860010111 or the crime line SMS 32211 or the nearest Police Station.

Tracking Team and Lephalale Cluster Task Team. This comes after an incident which occurred on October 2014 when the accused hijacked a taxi transporting several Botswana nationals from Francistown in Botswana to Johannesburg. Ngoepe said the occupants were robbed of their belongings outside Lephalale, after they were stopped by the accused, who were in possession of a police uniform and blue light.

He added that they further kidnapped the driver before fatally shooting and killing him. The case was investigated at the provincial level by Captain Malungane. “During their arrest, the police managed to recover a firearm, police uniform and the blue light,” Ngoepe explained. Limpopo Police Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nneke Ledwaba, praised investigators for a job well done.

Long jail terms for murder accused Lizzy Bapela Three accomplices were recently sentenced to life imprisonment by the Polokwane High Court sitting at the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 12 April, following an ambush on a minibus-load of Botswana nationals. The Police in Limpopo welcomed the long jail terms. Two of the accused, Klaas Khutso Ntsoane (38) and Lucky Mokoena (39)

were each sentenced to life and an additional 90 years imprisonment for murder, hijacking, kidnapping and armed robbery. The third accused, Charles Modimola (39) was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment for kidnapping and armed robbery. Limpopo police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the trio were from Tembisa in Gauteng, and were arrested in 2014 during an intelligence-led operation. The operation was spearheaded by MajorGeneral Meetsi and comprised of the Provincial Crime Intelligence, the Provincial

Mzamane Ringane Against the backdrop of a persisting drought, Modimolle residents found themselves flooded by rainwater following a cloud burst last Wednesday 11 April. By Monday 16 April some of the residents and officialdom were still engaged in mop-up operations in the aftermath of the sudden rain. Motorists were forced to negotiate their way around flooded streets, with some of the paved surface rooted out. Many homes across the low-lying RDP settlements of wards 6, 8, 11 and 13 were flooded by the heavy showers, which lasted for about two hours. Family members worked for the best

part of Wednesday afternoon removing bucketsful of rainwater from their dwellings. Some schoolchildren were completely cut off from their homes, with parents arriving in their numbers at local schools, with the objective to collect the youngsters and walk or drive them through alternative routes to reach

home. Scores of residents were seen lining up at Peter Nchabeleng Hall to register their plight with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), for relief such as food parcels. ModimolleMookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden said SASSA would be able to hand out a total of 450 food parcels, against the

backdrop of 1095 already registered by Monday 16 April. She said the Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs had been requested to make available disaster funding. Van Staden added that the Community Work Programme was also asked to get involved in the mopping up of flooded households, and cleaning of streets and sidewalks. Downtown Modimolle was also badly affected, with several trees falling over powerlines, and electricity supplies going off for the best part of the afternoon. Other information suggests that parts of Mandela section and Freedom Park were also affected in terms of interruptions to their power supplies.

Kobus paves way for political contestation TK Mashaba

The DA, ANC and EFF have put their colours to the mast. Photo: supplied

Political parties across the spectrum were already rallying their troops behind the scenes in anticipation of by-elections to replace Bela-Bela DA Councillor Kobus van der Merwe. The DA moved swiftly, disclosing that applications for wannabe candidates were to be thrown open for the Ward 9 soon to be vacated by the retired van der Merwe. The popular DA councillor has since relocated to George in the Western Cape. Bela-Bela DA Councillor David Senosha said National Assembly lawmaker, Desire van der Walt and the party’s Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle, were expected to visit Bela-Bela on Sunday 29 April. The DA envoy would be on a mission to provide strategic advice on the process of

fielding a candidate for the soon-to-be vacant ward. Bela-Bela EFF co-ordinator, Sello Moswoeu, said the fighters also had an eye on developments around Ward 9, adding a candidate would be identified to put up a fight on behalf of the party. He said EFF supporters in the ward would be mobilised to support their candidate by voting in their numbers. Jeremiah Ngobeni of the ANC said the party would definitely contest the ward they had lost to the DA. He said the ANC was also waiting for van der Merwe to resign officially. Meanwhile, the ANC has retained Ward 16 in Mogalakwena following a recent byelection. ANC candidate Lesiba Petrus Maloba emerged victorious with 43.53% of the votes.

EFF welcomes Bela-Bela’s head honcho Makhubela Lizzy Bapela The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) caucus in Bela-Bela has granted incoming municipal manager Michael Makhubela the thumbs up. In a statement released on Tuesday 17 April, EFF caucus leader Sello Mswoeu emerged from his recent hospital bed to

declare that the fighters were “happy” about the appointment of the incumbent. He was recently discharged from a hospital in Polokwane due to blood pressure complications, he told The BEAT. The EFF leader said the red berets were satisfied with the procedure followed to interview and appoint the rightful candidate. “There was an advertisement of the position of municipal manager, then there was an

interview, short-listing, and then all candidates were subjected to an opportunity to be interviewed and shortlisted (further),” Moswoeu said. He said at the end Makhubela emerged as “the best candidate”. The EFF further dared that those who failed to make the cut provided CV’s which he said were “not impressive.” He added that the Bela-Bela Local

Municiopality had, for a period of time, operated without a full-time municipal manager. However, the EFF’s sentiments fly in the face of at least one unsuccessful candidate, former Bela-Bela Local Municipality chief financial officer, Simon Ngomane. Ngomane has threatened to sue the municipality over the legitimacy of the processes.

Modimolle-Mookgophong traditional practitioners leadership

Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Traditional practitioners from across the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality converged on Peter Nchabeleng Community Hall in Modimolle on Friday 13 April, to elect a leadership. The structure was mandated to be the conduit between the sub-region’s tradiotional healers and the authorities. The Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality was represented by Councillor Rufus Mahoro and officials from the communications department.

Waterberg District Municipality’s divisional manager for community participation, Simon Malowa, was in attendance. The district municipality’s department’s HIV section head, Peter Kolobe, also graced the occasion. In his address, Mahoro said it was important for the community of ModimolleMookgophong to recognise and acknowledge traditional practitioners, as they played an important role in society. Waterberg Traditional Health Practitioners chairperson, Andries Mohatla, said the purpose of launching these sub-regional committees in all municipalities within the

Waterberg District, was to enhance the working relationship between traditional practitioners and the government. He said the committee serves as the mouthpiece of the traditional practitioners, to convey their needs and grievances to the highest level of authority. Before the commencement of the committee elections, Limpopo Traditional Health Practitioners secretary Thomas Maluleka urged those who would be elected to serve with integrity and dedication. Maluleka said they wanted people who would work relentlessly and tirelessly, by listening to their members’ needs and

address them accordingly. The provincial secretary said he will accompany the elected committee to formally meet the Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene Van Staden, to build a working relationship in the interest of the local community. The new committee comprises of chairperson, Nnowa Mohlala, his deputy, Grace Maake, Elsie Hlongwane (secretary), Pogiso Lebise (deputy secretary), Elisa Hlongwane (treasurer), and five additional members, namely William Mongwe, Violet Motileni, Patrick Chauke, Annah Pitsi and Margaret Matlou.

Fokus Deo congregation welcomes you in worship!

Good Samaritans from the Fokus Deo ministry descended on the sidewalks of downtown Modimolle to spread goodwill and serve free food. Photos: Supplied They believe that the local church is the hope for the town, and it is their desire to help change the lives of people to that of God’s plan for their lives. They believe in building people up and changing them, through teaching them. In March they sponsored and taught a people skills course with the Grade 7 learners of Eenheid Primary School called ‘DISCover Yourself and Others’. This was a lifechanging opportunity they would like to expand to other schools and businesses in the community. In Oh My SOUL they focus on youth themes

which are important to our teens and young adults like social media, rejection, relationships and so forth. And once every quarter, they tackle a difficult but relevant topic in their ‘Hot Potato’ evenings, a topic which is rarely dealt with in churches but still relevant! KidsFokus with Frikkie Fokus makes Sunday School fun and shows them the love of Jesus. They have a bow-and-arrow Sunday School class for the older children which is very popular. They love our children and see them as a vital in the broader fabric of the community!

Fokus Deo has an English service every Sunday at 11:15 am, the KidsFokus for the children is at the same time. They are situated at the corner of Chief Albert Luthuli and Chris Hani Streets in Modimolle (a block up from SPAR). They believe it is important for a congregation to reach out to the community. On Saturday 14 April, they hosted an outreach initiative in Modimolle’s main street, giving out 1000 wors-rolls, preaching and playing Christian music on the sidewalk, while praying for people. “We did this to let the community know we are a congregation for

the community and the church doors are open to everyone”, says Johan Brits, the pastor of Fokus Deo. They have a church campaign starting on 6 May called ‘Do You Know This God?’. There are six different topics covering six weeks. They give a daily devotional to everyone attending the services. You do not need to be a member of the church to be part of the church campaign. Everyone is welcome to come. For more information you can visit their website at www.fokusdeo.co.za and if you have any questions you are very welcome to phone Pastor Johan Brits at 074 502 9147.

Mama Winnie narrative would play out ahead of general elections Johnny Masilela Predictably, news headlines were in recent weeks dominated by the Winifred Madikizela-Mandela narrative. The following week we ran with the headline “Doek revolution”, alongside some stunning pictures of headgear patterns. May her soul rest in peace. But will it? Already Julius Malema was in his element at the funeral, accusing some in the higher echelons of the ANC of having allegedly rejected the Mother of the Nation. Hang on, Limpopo soccer, hang in there! Mzamane Ringane Limpopo soccer at the highest level continued to walk the knife edge with some results triggering shockwaves allround. The gravest concern was that the much-loved Baroka FC, which campaigns in the multimillion rand Professional Soccer League (PSL), have now lost two games in succession. Next Tuesday 24 April Baroka FC, who went down 21 to Mamelodi Sundowns and then lost 2-0 to Maritzburg United in a matter of just over a week, have an away date with the equally-wounded Ajax Cape Town. Also in serious trouble is Polokwane City FC, who have an away fixture against toughas-teak Bidvest Wits on Saturday 22 April. Marksman Rodney Ramagalela was expected to lead the Polokwane warriors in this do-or-die battle. Mixed fortunes continued to be the order of the day for Limpopo’s National First Division (NFD) campaigners, Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandela FC and Black Leopards FC, both based in Thohoyandou. The

The Thohoyandou darlings were scheduled to host Richards Bay FC on Saturday 21 April. Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandela FC had an away date with Super Eagles FC at Bethlehem’s Goble Park Stadium. Modimolle’s Liverpool FC to play in SAB League Mzamane Ringane Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Football Association Stream A winner, Liverpool FC has secured a place in the higher SAB League, effective from the new season of the SAFA third division competition. The team ended their league race on a high note, when they walloped local counterparts Future Stars 3-0 at the Maokeng Primary School ground on Sunday 15 April. Team owner Simon Makhubela and his assistant Jan Mafuna were over the moon as their side lifted the trophy and marched on to Stream A of the SAB League. Makhubela previously surrendered his NTK Happy Boys status to what is now known as Opleft United FC. He has returned to formal football after acquiring the status of Liverpool FC, which has triumphed and rose into the higher ranks. He told The BEAT he could not help but come back to football to nurse his “addiction”. “Football is an addiction. We previously decided to stop taking part in football, but then later decided to compete in the lower league to keep these boys committed to something positive. Due to their dedication, they played well throughout the season and reaped the rewards,” he said. Makhubela also hailed Mafuna for his dedication towards the team, and ensuring that the team remained focused from the beginning untill the end of the season. The team won a trophy and 18 medals, plus sponsored transportation to their first three away league fixtures, courtesy of Maremane Transport Services. As a dress rehearsal ahead of the 2018/19 season, Makhubela told the BEAT his team will lock horns with the Stream B champions Barcelona FC of Mookgophong on Sunday 22 April.
