A memorial wall, where learners from the Academia Private School in BelaBela could write a message for Prayer Chandakafambira after his recent passing, was put up at the school. Prayer attended the school since 2015. On the photo are some of the messages that was written on the wall for him. Photo: Andries van der Heyde Andries van der Heyde The family of Prayer Chandakafambira (17), a Grade 11 learner at Academia Private School in Bela-Bela, are traumatized after he was found dead close to a traffic light intersection near the Bela Mall on Thursday 10 May. Chandakafambira, a Zimbabwean national, was living with his family in town. His family reported him missing on Thursday, according to Lt. Col. Abel Phetla, detective commander at the Bela-Bela SAPS. He was found dead near the mall on the same day late in the afternoon. The boy was found at the scene wearing a ‘Warrie ondersteuner’ shirt, according to WO Dana Smith, investigating officer. It was assumed that he was a learner at Hoërskool Warmbad, but Paul Liddle, principal of the Warries, said that he never attended the school. According Smith, the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, but the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death and how he was found lying in the road, is still unclear at this stage. Chrisna van der Walt, principal at Academia Private School, said that Chandakafambira was an examplary learner. She said that he attended the school since 2015. According to one of his educators, Blondie Weyers, the boy recently

became distracted and claimed that he suffered from headaches since his return from Zimbabwe during the recent school holidays. “He was very much loved and the other learners saw him as a big brother. His sudden death is a mystery,” said Weyers. The learners decided to create a memorial wall for him at the school, by writing him messages and displaying them at the school outside the main building. A memorial service for him will be held at the school within the next two weeks. The learners are also receiving counselling. * Two other culpable homicide cases had also taken place on Wednesday 9 May near the Shell petrol station in Potgieter Street and on Saturday 12 May outside of Bela-Bela on the R101 road to Modimolle. According to the police, a truck with a trailer tried to turn into the business and shopping complex across from Shell on Wednesday. The trailer somehow hooked a pedestrian and was run over. The police are still investigating. The identity of the victim is still unknown, since no family member has come forward. A man, allegedly a Zimbabwean, was run over on the R101 close to the Swift diesel fuel depot on Saturday. Phetla said it is alleged that an alleged hit-and-run vehicle ran the man over. The man died at the scene. The identity of the victim is also still unknown at this stage.

The BEAT staff pays glowing tributes to a mentor

The late Sam Nzima rose to international prominence after capturing the Soweto uprisings on camera. Photo: Google

The BEAT Team The recent passing of legendary photojournalist Sam Nzima — who captured the image of Hector Peterson being carried to safety — has hit where it hurts most; The BEAT collective of editor and reporters. Nzima passed away on Saturday 12 May, five weeks ahead of Youth Day on Saturday June 16, the day on which he captured that famous picture of the dying Peterson, in the arms of Mbuyisa Makhubu. Peterson’s sister Antoinnette Sithole cries hysterically alongside. Lizzy Bapela, Mzamane Ringane and TK Mashaba remember vividly how the late Nzima workshopped them about the finest aspects of newspaper photography, on the occasion of a getaway at Loskop Dam Resort in Mpumalanga, on 18 August 2006. Perhaps the most poignant memory is that of Lizzy Bapela, who has sheet on which Nzima autographed a special message to nudge on her career. “That was one of the highlights of my career as a newspaper reporter. Bra Sam was so humble I did not believe he was the man who took that historic political picture of all time,” she said. Bapela said since then she had made contact with Nzima, sourcing tips on how to approach different frames of pictures. TK Mashaba said he remembered how at the workshop the late Nzima taught them to always carry their cameras with them in case of any eventuality.

“What he meant was that pictures should not necessarily focus on events and incidents. A good picture can create itself anywhere at any given time,” he said. Mzamane Ringane said during the workshop Nzima had come across as too big for him as a young journalist. “His aura and demeanor just blew me away. I feel honoured to have shared the same space with such a great man, well-known worldwide,” he said. The BEAT editor Johnny Masilela shared memories of how Nzima could not continue as an ordinary photojournalist, following the publication of the Peterson picture on the front pages of newspapers worldwide. “Bra Sam spent most of his later career addressing seminars on the world stage. It was just amazing,” he said. Masilela spoke in jest about how a fellow photographer at the now defunct Rand Daily Mail, the late Ralph Ndawo, missed on the great picture. “Bra Ralph related to me how on June 16 1976 he had, camera in hand, rushed to the scene of a fire in Soweto. In his hurry Bra Ralph swears he had met a schoolboy carrying another one in his arms, with a crying schoolgirl alongside, running in the opposite direction,” he said. Masilela said that was how — oops! – Ralph Ndawo missed out on capturing the most famous political frame, all because of the fire. The Hector Peterson Primary School in Modimolle is named in honour of the Soweto uprisings casualty.

Sam Nzima wrote a special autograph for The BEAT’s reporter, — Lizzy Bapela.

First wildfires hit Modimolle

Power cuts fears for ModimolleMookgophong Mzamane Ringane

Firefighters were hard at work fighting the first fires to hit the province. Photo: supplied Lizzy Bapela The fire season arrived in earnest when firefighters were dispatched to suppress flames on a farm outside Modimolle. The winter fire season is only declared on 1 June, but already some fires have flared up in various parts of the province. In Waterberg, the fire broke out at a private farm just outside Modimolle, according to Working on Fire (WoF) spokesperson, Matema Gwangwa. She said two teams totalling 25 firefighters were dispatched to the affected farm, which culminated in minimum damage of only five hectares. The cause of the fire was at the time of going to print, still unknown. “We are pleading with the communities to report all the fires that they see in

their areas to their local fire brigade immediately, and to refrain from starting the fires in open areas, as that might lead to the cause of the runaway fires,” said Gwangwa. She sent a clarion call to motorists to refrain from throwing burning cigarette butt out the window, as they may lead to wildfire flare-ups. WoF preparations for the 2018 winter fire season kicked-off as fire-fighters from across the province gathered at the Vaalwater Airfield and Tzaneen Showground’s from Wednesday 2 May, to Wednesday 9 May, for the yellow card training camp. More than 600 fire-fighters were assessed on their level of fitness, whereby they were taken through various aspects of physical and other training. Gwangwa said the WoF aimed for a 100% pass rate from all fire-fighters during the camp.

Vagrants at centre of fire probe

The towns of Modimolle, Vaalwater and Mookgophong were once again facing the prospect of a chilling winter without power supplies. Eskom has published a notice in The BEAT’s sister newspaper, Die Pos/The Post, of the power utility’s “intention” to disrupt power supplies. Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden responded swiftly, calling on the Limpopo Provincial government to “step up and fulfil its legal duty” to assist the municipality. She said the municipality would request the provincial COGhSTA and Treasury to get involved in setting up a Financial Recovery Plan and Business Rescue, to ensure residents were not left in the dark and the cold this winter. She said this was necessitated by “financial difficulties” facing the ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality. “Following the absolute shambles that we inherited from the ANC, it has been an uphill battle to settle an astronomically high-power bill. “While we have made some progress and have averted two power cuts already, the fact that the municipality has gone through several personnel changes in crucial portfolios, and that residents are not all paying their bills, has left the municipality falling behind in its payment schedule to the power utility,” Van Staden said. She said while the municipality was able to pay more than half of the R36 million, it was unable to pay the April monthly account. Van Staden said she planned to meet with Eskom in the coming days to try averting a power cut crisis. In recent months the national bulk power supplier threatened to put the squeeze on Modimolle, Vaalwater and Mookgophong, but the decision was later suspended after the municipality honoured the repayment agreement.

Suspect shot with two on the run TK Mashaba

TK Mashaba Police were looking for at least one homeless person who may provide answers behind the fire which destroyed part of Bela-Bela’s Waterfront complex. Four properties along the popular getaway went up in flames in the late hours of Monday 7 May. Fire damage was estimated at R3 million. Bela-Bela SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Phetla, said it had been alleged the homeless people had found shelter in one of the properties, just before the devastating blaze. A case of alleged arson has since been

opened and various other leads were being investigated. The fire on that fateful Monday night drew sympathisers from both the town and neighbouring township, who fought the running blaze. During the aftermath of the fire, Century 21 CEO and Waterfront complex owner, Fred van Heerden, had said he was satisfied by the swift response of the local fire brigade to the fire. Also on the day following the fire, Phetla was on record saying the cause of the fire had not at the time been determined. The mangled remains of the structures continued to be cleared up in recent weeks.

A car-theft suspect was shot and captured during an operation near the Maubane offramp on the N1 South. A total of three suspects, all Mozambican nationals based in Gauteng, were cornered by the Flying Squad, with two others having fled on foot. The men were being sought in connection with the theft of two bakkies in Modimolle, which were traced to the N1 North. It’s alleged the three men stole an Isuzu Bakkie and the owner alerted the SAPS in Pienaarsrivier, who in turn tipped off the Flying Squad. According to Pienaarsrivier SAPS investigating officer, Warrant Officer Maxwell Nkanyane, it was found that the bakkie was towing another allegedly stolen

bakkie. “The injured suspect is still recuperating in hospital under police guard, while the two others fled on foot,” he said. Nkanyane said it was alleged the three are Mozambican nationals, based in the township of Daveyton in Benoni, Gauteng. Last Monday 7 May, six men appeared before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on charges of alleged car theft, which pushed up emotions from local concerned motorists. The six suspects were expected to appear again before the Modimolle Magistate’s Court midweek. Later that day concerned residents marched on the Modimolle Police Station, to press home demands for swift action against a range of criminal activities. Nkanyane said the police could not rule out a connection between the two incidents.

IEC corrects date for Bela-Bela by-elections The correct date for the by-elections is Tuesday 17 July.

IEC officials at work during the 2016 local government elections. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Waterberg has alerted The BEAT to an incorrect date published in the Friday May 11 edition. We erroneously published the date for the by-elections scheduled for Bela-Bela’s Ward 9 as 20 July, which was an error of judgement on our part. The correct date for the by-elections is Tuesday 17 July. Waterberg IEC supervisor, Malome Nkoana, said the electoral commission had lined up Friday 18 May to Sunday 20 May, for a pre-poll targeted communication and registration drive. On the weekend of Saturday 26 May and Sunday 27 May, the IEC has lined up a registration campaign. The much-anticipated by-elections were earmarked to fill up the ward vacated by the DA’s Kobus van der Merwe. Political parties across the spectrum were raring to go for the ward.

Modimolle Primary eyeing Danone Cup

SCHOOL | SPORT

Black Leopards’ baptism of fire Mzamane Ringane Thohoyandou-based Black Leopards FC has been thrown into the lion’s den to face the wounded Platinum Stars FC in the first fixture for the promotional play-offs. Black Leopards FC is the only team in Limpopo featured on the promotional play-offs, which should officially unveil the team to be promoted into Premier Soccer League (PSL). The good news flowing from last weekend’s PSL fixtures is that both Limpopo-based Baroka FC and Polokwane City FC would not be subjected to the dreaded play-offs. Instead, the two teams are guaranteed a place in the PSL programme next season. The Black Leopards fixture against

Modimolle Troublemakers FC has booked a place in promotional play-offs which may elevate them to the third-tier ABC Motsepe League. The Modimolle pride would on Saturday 19 May host Bussel FC in what is just a formality fixture. The Modimolle giants confirmed their position in the regional play-offs as a representative of Stream A, following a 3-0 victory over Bela Bela Pirates FC on Saturday 12 May. The play-offs, which were scheduled to take place at a yet to be announced venue and date, were billed to comprise three winners from each stream across the Waterberg Region. Stream C will be represented by Palala Giant Killers from Lephalale, while the fixtures for stream B will be wrapped up this weekend.

Mzamane Ringane Modimolle Primary School has shown determination to go as far as possible in the under-12 Danone Nations Cup, by outshining fellow opponents to emerge victorious during the Nylstroom circuit leg of the competition. In the first match of the day, Lekkerbreek Primary School defeated Hector Peterson Primary School 2-0, with Modimolle Primary School beating Dagbreek Primary 3-1. The third match was between Lord Milner Primary School of Settlers, which was knocked out by Lekkerbreek Primary School in a 3-1 defeat. During the final match, Modimolle Primary School narrowly defeated

Lekkerbreek 2-1 to secure a spot in the next stages of the competition. Team Manager and educator at the school, Ediel Mokoka, told The BEAT the school had serious preparations ahead of the matches, and that it was hoped the players would go all the way to the regional showdown. “Our wish is to play in the regional leg of the competition and even go as far as the provincial level,” he said. Mokoka acknowledged local young coaches Hope Motau and Tshepo Selamolela for their support and role they played in ensuring that the level of football at the school is at an all-time high. The team will now compete with winners from other circuits in the next stages of the competition, at a yet to be announced venue and date.

Platinum Stars FC could be a blessing in disguise, with Black Leopards the hosts in the first of the play-offs on Wednesday 16 May. After the latter fixture, Black Leopards would travel to Gauteng to meet Jomo Cosmos FC. Jomo Cosmos would then play hosts to Platinum Stars on Wednesday 23 May. On Saturday 26 May Platinum Stars was booked to welcome Black Leopards, with Black Leopards scheduled to host Jomo Cosmos on Wednesday 30 May. The last fixture of the play-offs would feature a home match for Jomo Cosmos against Platinum Stars. The campaigners from the North West’s Platinum belt find themselves in the play-offs after ending up second from last in the PSL league log standings.

A total of four last fixtures of the season for ther Stream A SAB Waterberg Regional League were scheduled to take place this weekend in Bela Bela and Modimolle, with Modimolle Troublemakers FC leading the pack. Modimolle Troublemakers FC is now six points clear of second-placed Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC. Diesel ‘n Dust FC will visit Modimolle Celtic at Tankeng Grounds this coming weekend. Opleft United FC will be hosting Mookgophong Junior Stars FC at Rapotokwane Sports Grounds. The battle between Troublemakers FC, Palala Giant Killers FC and the stream B winners, will produce one frontrunner to represent the Waterberg Region in the provincial play-offs. From the inter-regional play-offs, the best two teams will then advance into the ABC Motsepe League.

Angels of Africa puts record straight TK Mashaba The Bela-Bela-based Angels of Africa choir leadership visited The BEAT offices to mend fences following an incident whereby reporter Lizzy Bapela was denied entry into an ongoing festival. Choir chairperson, Sinah Thepe, attributed the whole saga to misunderstanding. She admitted during an engagement with editor, Johnny Masilela, that she was the one who turned Bapela away, but cautioned that she did not even know the latter was a representative of The

BEAT newspaper. Thepe said she has had good relations with The BEAT in the past, working with other reporters. “If I was aware that Lizzy was from The BEAT I would not have turned her way,” she said. Masilela assured Thepe the Angels of Africa family was welcome to communicate events with reporters going forward. Bapela said she was invited at the disputed choir event at Bela-Bela’s multipurpose centre by another official. However, when she arrived at the entrance a doorman insisted that entry fee was R70.

The team has since qualified for the international showdown in Europe, whereby various countries were going through a bidding process to host the event. The qualification spot is a sequel to the

South African team’s sterling performances during a tournament in the Zambian capital of Lusaka. The international handball tournament is scheduled to take place on dates yet to be determined in the year 2019. Both players and the coach were part of the South African handball squad which took part in a tournament in Zambia last month.

Bela-Bela ladies headed for national netball tournament TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s netball stars Grace Leshaba and Kamogelo Motsamai continue to showcase their stuff at the Brutal Fruit Netball League in Gauteng. The twosome emerged from a tough weekend of netball played at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park Indoor Arena, and were this forthcoming weekend headed for the city of Pretoria. The inter-provincial Brutal Fruit Netball

League continues at the University of Pretoria’s Rembrandt Hall, from Friday 18 May to Sunday 20 May. Leshaba and Motsamai are key members of Limpopo’s Baobabs netball squad. Back home the two players ply their trade at Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust Netball Club. The inter-provincial tournament features a total of 10 teams from across the country, with Gauteng fielding two teams. Fixtures continue from Friday 18 May to Sunday 20 May at the University of Pretoria.

From here the finals were scheduled to take place from Friday 25 May until Sunday 17 June, at a yet to be decided venue. The Brutal Fruit Netball League is regarded as the largest on the African continent. Wing attack players, Mapula Hakala, Dakalo Chikala and Nkateko Rikhotso, also formed part of the Baobabs last season. The three were part of the selection games in Polokwane recently, but failed to make the cut.
