Jahman blushes Mzamane Ringane

The Jamaican rastaman and dub/ rhythmn poet Mutabaruka’s controversial roadshow swept through Modimolle last Friday 8 June, leaving blushing faces in its trail. Mutabaruka touched base with the region by invitation from the Modimolle-based Black Lives Matter Foundation. Born Allan Hope, the Jamaican elevated poetry to dizzy heights, creating a completely new music genre known as dub/rhythm poetry, but he was also popularly known for his groundbreaking talk radio programmes, Cutting Edge and Steppin’ Razor. In Modimolle the audience either liked or hated him, as he tore into interests across the spectrum, ranging from religion to politics. For instance, when a well-known local pastor bemoaned the fact that he had missed the Mutabaruka show, little did he realise that the man would take a swipe at the selfsame Christianity doctrine. “The worst liar between a pastor and a politician ... is the pastor,

because while the politician makes promises about life (on earth), the pastor promises good things after your death,” he told the stunned audience. Rastafarians arrived for the controversial show from Modimolle and surroundings, eating out of their hero’s palm, as he questioned almost every aspect of conventional wisdom, such as that “black people like everything except themselves.” He dared that should one’s denims get torn at the knees, the owner

would either have it sewn, or throw it away. “But still the fashion capitals of the West can take the same trousers, deliberately tear it in places, and then sell it to us at a profit. And we do consume such things,” he said. Zunaid Mossam of Black Lives Matter said as event managers they had targeted an audience of around 300, but had to accommodate double that number, which he said was testimony to Mutabaruka’s growing popularity.

Mzamane Ringane The Waterberg football fraternity is relying on the Lephalale based SAB League side, Palala Giant Killers to bring home the SAFA Second Division (ABC Motsepe League) status. Palala Giant Killers FC qualified for the provincial play-offs after outshining Modimolle Troublemakers FC and Sekgakgapeng Young Cosmos FC. The showdown was held at the Bela Bela High School venue, with soccer lovers from as far as Mokopane, Lephalalale and Modimolle coming in numbers to witness the spectacular regional event. Modimolle Troublemakers FC went down 2-0 to the Mokopane-based Sekgakgapeng Young Cosmos, during the first match of the day. To Troublemakers’ advantage, Palala Giant Killers FC humbled Sekgakgapeng Young Cosmos with a 4-1 whipping in the second match of the play-offs. It was however a mountain to climb for the Modimolle lads, as they had to score five goals and keep a clean sheet, in their last match against Palala Giant Killers FC to be crowned Waterberg champions. The Lephalalale-based team proved to be more determined to gain promotion, when they confirmed their place in the provincial play-offs with a 3-0 win over Troublemakers FC. The play-offs did not go without drama though, as tensions ran high among

supporters of both Modimolle Troublemakers FC and Sekgakgapeng Young Cosmos. The disgruntled supporters blamed the officiating referees for being responsible for their teams’ exit from the play-offs. Palala Giant Killers FC director Paseka Monyeki said the fact that they finished their stream of the league early, gave them enough time to do proper planning and prepare for the play-offs. “Last season we were knocked out of the regional play-offs due to technical mistakes. This season we had to make sure that we commit no mistakes and had to give it our best shot. It was difficult because we were playing against both Troublemakers and Young Cosmos for the first time, but watching the first match between the two gave us an opportunity to understand their style of play,” he said. Monyeki commended his team for remaining disciplined and displaying the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Palala Giant Killers FC will now represent the Waterberg region during the play-offs which were scheduled for Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July at Nkowa-Nkowa Stadium in the Mopani region. Should Palala Giant Killers win the provincial play-offs, or at least emerge as runners-up, the Waterberg region will register its first team in the SAFA Second Division since the relegation of Modimolle Terrors FC in the year 2016.

TK Mashaba Three wannabe daredevils from the township of Seshego, Polokwane, won the hearts of many a mountain biker on the occasion of an event across the rocky terrain of Bela-Bela’s Elements Golf Estate, Shakuma Lodge, ending at Sondela Nature Reserve. The endurance experience was the first ever for Willy Ledwaba (33), Reggie Galane (33) and Benny Galane (33). Ledwaba said the threesome had over a period of time circled their way between Seshego and Polokwane, and that was how word reached them about the mountain bike event in Bela-Bela. One thing led to the other, and come Friday 8 June, the three were complete in safety gear and customised bicycles, for the three-day endurance test. While the race went smoothly for both the Galanes, Ledwaba had to deal with a flat tyre along the rocky Shakuma Lodge stage of the event. Organisers offered special prizes to the threesome, in recognition of plunging into a sporting code which was generally known not to be not for sissies. The “makeshift” twosome of B Kruger and Regis Maniora won their third stage in

Woman gets five years for false ‘rape’ Andries van der Heyde A woman from Bela-Bela was recently sentenced to an effective five years in prison for lying to the police that she was raped. Dora Waseem accused George Maimela of raping her. It is believed that the two went to his home in December 2016 after visiting a tavern in the Bela-Bela township, according to the police. Shortly thereafter Waseem opened a case of rape against Maimela, and he was charged for the crime. The Modimolle Regional Court found Maimela guilty on a charge of rape in September 2017, and was due to sentence him in January this year. Maimela was, however, released after five months in custody when Waseem came forward stating that she had lied to the

court, according to the police. She was then charged for perjury and Maimela was released. Warrant Officer Johannes Shitlhane, head of the Bela-Bela police’s unit for family violence, child protection and sexual offenses, said the court later transferred her case to the Thabazimbi Regional Court for plea and sentencing. Waseem was found guilty of perjury and was sentenced on Wednesday 30 May without the option of a fine. She will be held at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria for the next five years for lying to the police, said Shitlhane. “Rape cases are a priority on (the) national level, but if people lie to the police, they will have to face the consequences,” said Shitlhane. “In the case of Waseem, resources were wasted and a man went through this ordeal unnecessarily. People must report genuine cases to the police and not lie.”

a row, to seal overall victory of the Liberty Waterberg MTB Encounter. In the final stage, which culminated at the Sondela Nature Reserve after 59km of racing, the ASG-Cape Duo pair took a hardfought three-second victory over ASG Store Paarl’s Hanco Kachelhoffer and Pieter Seyffert, who secured the runner-up spot in the general classification. Kruger and his makeshift Luxembourg teammate clinched the top spot with an overall time of 6:50:18, a minute ahead of their closest rivals. LikeToBike’s Floris Engelbrecht and Justin van der Linde finished a distant third overall after three successive podiums. Kruger, who is based in Paarl, was delighted with their victory in his second appearance in the Waterberg Encounter, presented by STANLIB. “It was a good feeling to win,” he said, admitting that he was more relaxed than during his debut. “From my experience last year, I knew it would be an enjoyable race with a good vibe and I was looking forward to another challenging weekend. Kruger said he and Maniora were pushed hard on the final day after a less than perfect start. Marie-Louise Kleynhans and Rentia van Tonder won the women’s race in 11:06:49.

TK Mashaba Former Bela-Bela Mayor Lucas Nhlapo has re-dedicated his time to tackling head-on the “nyaope” drug concoction abuse problem and associated challenges such as petty crime on the sidewalks and alleys of Bela-Bela. Nhlapo has chosen the anti-drug campaign as his own “Thuma Mina” (Send Me) pet project, starting in Bela-Bela, and possibly taking it to other parts of the broader Waterberg, and beyond. President Cyril Ramaphosa had, in his maiden State of the Nation Address earlier in the year, sent out a clarion call to South Africans to respond to the call to “Thuma Mina” (Send Me). Symbolically, the campaign was borrowed from a song by internationally-acclaimed trumpeter and crooner, the late Hugh

Masekela. Speaking during a visit to a local church in the township in Bela-Bela on Thursday 7 June, Nhlapo said he would dedicate Youth Day Saturday June 16, to engage with the drug’s addicts and the broader ecumenical movement. Nhlapo has been pounding the pavements of late, urging the often youthful drug’s victims to make themselves available for heart-to-heart engaments come Saturday, Youth Day. The idea was taken further during an informal luncheon between Nhlapo, the church leadership and drug addicts, on Thursday 7 June. He said like their predecessors from the Soweto Uprisings of June 16 1976, the present-day generation of young people had their own unique challenges, among these the abuse of substances such as the “nyaope” drug concoction. Nhlapo was also in touch with the Ikageng Youth Centre along the R101 between BelaBela and Modimolle, to harness resources and information to deal with the drug abuse challenges. He said resources allowing, drug addicts would be nudged to consider seeking help at the Ikageng Youth Centre, which continued to provide life skills such as small-scale farming and small business skills development.

Modimolle-Mookgophong mayor speaks out Mzamane Ringane The mayor of Modimolle/Mookgophong Marlene Van Staden addressed residents of Modimolle on Monday, 11 June on the state of affairs in the struggling municipality. The community of Modimolle converged on the Phagameng Township based Ephraim Mogale Stadium, for an Imbizo which was called by the local mayor and her entourage. Van Staden told members of the community that council has approved the decision to invoke sections 151 and 152 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), which allows the municipality to apply to the high court for an order to stall all legal proceedings by the municipality’s creditors, including Eskom. Should the legal attempts by the provincial government succeed, then the council can be able to stop Eskom’s intention to cut power supplies with effect from 29 June. “The Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) appointed a state attorney to act on our behalf. The state attorney in turn appointed two senior counsels who will be assisting the municipality,” she said. Van Staden said the advocates are currently preparing all necessary documents, and hopefully the high court application will commence sometime next week. Another reason for the meeting was to enlighten the community on the recent decision taken by the provincial government to intervene in accordance with section 139 (1) (b) of the Constitution. Through this level of intervention, the provincial government will appoint an administrator who will assume all the responsibilities of the municipal manager in the embattled Modimolle/Mookgophong Municipality. “In addition, council resolved to hear a presentation on the provincial government’s report on the state of the municipality, before considering the MEC’S suggestion that a forensic investigation be conducted at the municipality,” she said. The budget was also elaborated on, with the mayor citing that council has drawn up the budget for the 2018-2019 financial year, with the help of provincial treasury officials. The budget was to be presented before the council on Thursday 21 June for final approval.

Girl power Bela-Bela women were addressed on the eradication of patriarchal mind-sets at the workshop. Photo: Supplied

Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela’s young socialite and entrepreneur, Semakaleng Mothapo, addressed women from different walks of life in Bela-Bela during an empowerment workshop focusing on eradicating patriarchal mindsets. The event was held at the Bela-Bela Multipurpose Centre on Tuesday 29 May. Members of the audience included ordinary citizens, emerging entrepreneurs and students. Mothapo told The BEAT he was concerned about the broader global marginalization of women over many years, due to patriarchy. He identified the need to host the workshop so women from all ages, status, and cultures could come together and share life experiences, challenges and ideas. “South Africa is one of the countries with a progressive constitution, which endorses the rights of women and gender equality, and to demonstrate this, SA celebrates Women’s Month instead of just Women’s Day. Globally this is pretty great movement and it gives South Africa a great image in terms of women’s rights and opportunities,” he said during his formal address to the gathering. “Although the gender equity policy exists in South Africa, women are not completely free from all types of violence. Gender inequality is a worrying factor because patriarchal traditions make men and other women believe that men are entitled to domination over women,” he said. Mothapo further emphasized that patriarchal traditions also make women compete with each other, not for jobs or other accomplishments, but for the attention of men. He said there was, however, signs of hope because civil organisations and government structures have developed initiatives to free women from oppression. Mothapo is a social worker by profession.

We don’t solve personal problems We have to continue to educate our readers as to the role of a newspaper embedded in the community like The BEAT. The difference between the mainstream and community press is that reporters at The BEAT are very much visible to the reading public, comparable to say the Sunday Sun whereby I was the inaugural news editor. At the Sunday Sun I used to write a popular column titled “Beyond the headlines”, with readers from far-flung areas such as Cape Town or Musina, having no clue how I looked like, or my favourite beer. Having said that, I remember the other day I was on a film scriptwriting workshop at the medieval settlement of Genandedal, east of Cape Town. One of the visitors at the workshop was a Coloured gentleman whose face was very much familiar. At breakfast I suggested to the man that I must have met him somewhere. He smiled and replied he had been thinking the same about me, that it was not for the first time he saw my face and my signature beret.

I scratched my head, trying to figure out where the heck I met this perfect gentleman with a warm smile.

Letter from The Editor Johnny Masilela

When I returned to the workshop, one of my fellow students, John Barker (yes, Clive Barker’s son!), winked and revealed to me that we were so honoured as to be visited

by no less a mortal than Abdullah Ibrahim. My foot! By suggesting he knew me from somewhere, the great pianist had unsettled me, and caused my mind to go into a tailspin. With that state of mind, I would not be able to recognise I was sharing the breakfast table with Abdullah Ibrahim, he of the internationallyacclaimed “Mannenberg” classic of all time. Back to our own reporters. Lizzy Bapela, Mzamane Ringane and TK Mashaba have to work with communities face to face, on a daily basis. I often receive a call from the three of them complaining how this or that politician called them at midnight to do this or that story.

Waterberg youth headed for Peter Mokaba Stadium Lizzy Bapela Scores of the youth in the Waterberg were expected to take advantage of free transport to attend a Youth Day rally to be addressed by Limpopo Premier, Stan Mathabatha on Saturday 16 June. The Office of the Premier has unveiled plans to transport youngsters from across Limpopo, with buses made available for all wards. The day was scheduled to kick off with a “long walk” from SABC Park in Polokwane, to the stadium. The Premier has been lined up as the keynote speaker, whereby he was expected to shed some light regarding the government’s programmes to arrest rising youth unemployment. The next day, Sunday 17 June, the provincial government was scheduled

to host a youth summit in Thabazimbi, whereby free transport would also be made available for the wards. As early as Monday 11 June, a Youth Entrepreneurship Programme (YEP), affectionately known as Bizniz in a Box, was launched on the premises of the local Regorogile Mutlipurpose Sports Centre, hosted by the Thabazimbi Local Municipality. The Thabazimbi Local Municipality embaked on the programme in partnership with ABI Bottling Company, SIOC Community Development Trust, Godisang Thabazimbi Development Trust and Small Enterprise Finance Agency. The programme would, during the course of the week, also be rolled out to Northam, Smashblock, Rooiberg and Raphuti.

The initiative was first piloted in 2015 to make a “meaningful and sustainable” impact on youth unemployment through enterprise development. Nearer home, former Bela-Bela Mayor Lucas Nhlapo has dedicated his time to tackle head-on the abuse of the nyaope drug embattling the broader Waterberg and beyond. Incumbent Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni will engage in several activities throughout the month, in order to commemorate the day and remember the 1976 youth struggles. These he said would include, among others, workshops on substance abuse, and the launch of the local AIDS Council. He said this would also include the annual winter enrichment programmes for matriculates scheduled for Forever Resorts shortly.

It was even worse for Lizzy the other day, when a prominent BelaBela politician called her in the morning, to report on certain volunteers who were rebuilding a destitute person’s house, and that she go to the scene immediately. When Lizzy tried to reason that she had just awoken from sleep, the politician gave her a lecture in good journalism, daring that when a story breaks, reporters left everything they were doing, and respond promptly. Really? Of late Lizzy and TK have been on the receiving end of a Bela-Bela resident, complaining about how the municipality had dug a sewerage network in his yard without “consultation”. Interestingly, the man is an employee of the municipality, meaning he has more inner access to the city fathers, comparable to Lizzy and TK. For the umpteenth time I repeat: Our role is to report on events without fear nor favour, but then we cannot become a platform to solve individual’s personal problems. Pray for us, oh dear reader, do pray for us.

Soup Run will be hot fun — The BEAT Team Those who wish to beat the winter chill are welcome to join the next fun run of the Warmbaths Marathon Club on Wednesday 20 June — The Soup Run. Athletes can compete in either the 5 km or 7 km run. However, the same route on the Alma Road will not be used. Instead, athletes will meet at 17:15 at the Laërskool Warmbad hostel’s main gate along the Alma Road, where they will be taken to the new route. The route will be explained at the corner of Katjiepiering and Apiesdoring Street. Those who complete their respective runs will be given a generous cup of soup afterwards. Everyone is welcome.

Taking girl child to work The children were told how to keep safe at all times. Photo: Supplied

Lizzy Bapela The SAPS in Modimolle has again participated in the annual national corporate social investment event, Take A Girl Child To Work Campaign. This year, the police force recently hosted four girls from Solomon Mhulangu High School and Phagameng High School, who were taken to various units of the

SAPS. The latter units included the K9 (former Dog Unit), cluster office, Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit and the broader local police station. The girls showed excitement after spending the day interacting with officials and management from all the offices they visited, saying they had learned a lot from the experience. The Take A Girl Child To Work campaign is an annual national event, taking place on the last Thursday of May since 2003. State institutions and public sector companies taking part in the campaign host female learners, usually from their local communities, to spend the day at their place of work. Meanwhile, the police wrapped up the Child Protection Week activities by visiting the Klein Treetjies crèche in Modimolle town as part of their celebrations. Modimolle police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said the aim of their event was to teach the little ones about safety in general, and how to keep themselves safe when alone at home.

ANC and EFF by-elections candidates still unknown TK Mashaba The countdown ahead of the allimportant by-elections in Bela-Bela’s Ward 9 has started in earnest, with the ANC and EFF still to unveil their candidates. Mzamane Ringane Modimolle Masters FC has qualified for the Modimolle/ Mookgophong Mayor’s Cup, after beating younger counterparts Bussel FC 3-1 in the knockouts last Sunday 10 June. Prior to that match, NTK Happy Boys FC also registered its name in the next stages of the competition, by narrowly beating Liverpool Masters FC 6-5 on penalties, following a 1all draw at the end of regulation time. Modimolle Masters FC will on Saturday 16 June, square off with NTK Happy Boys FC in the final to decide the outright winner.
