Bela-Bela jail break fugitives still at large

Police are still on a manhunt for three of these fugitives following a daring nightime jail break. Photos: Supplied TK Mashaba Multi-pronged investigations over the recent daring jail break at Bela-Bela police station continue. Police spokesperson, LieutenantColonel Abel Phetla, said on Tuesday, 10 October, that while the three fugitives were still on the run, certain

possibilities were being explored, such as internal dynamics. While four of the suspects were still at large, Clifford Muntonhori (29), was rearrested. The police are still looking for Philani Sithole (30), Silence Dube (29), Thabang Dube (30) and Joshua Mogashoa. The four made a daring escape from the Bela-Bela police cells on the night of

Fears for dark days at Modimolle Mzamane Ringane Following a pre-dawn blackout on Monday, 9 October, at both downtown Modimolle and the Phagameng township, residents can brace themselves for yet another daylong outage on Sunday, 15 October. On Monday residents woke up to an unexpected blackout, as a result of what the municipality later described as an “earth fault”. This coming Sunday the ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality has announced power supplies were to be switched off in town and also at the local township. The municipality has announced that electricity supplies would be interrupted, so

as to allow the council and Eskom to execute maintenance work. Local residents were advised to explore alternative methods with regards to their daily needs such as cooking, as the outage was scheduled to last for about nine hours, starting from 7: 00 until 16: 00. Residents have however been warned to be on the alert and that they regard electricity connections as “live”. This because it could not be said with absolute certainty that electricity supply disruptions would continue for the duration of the entire stipulated period. “No guarantee can be given that the electricity will be off for the period mentioned, and all electricity installations must therefore be regarded live,” Municipal Manager Ombali Sebola said in a statement.

Sunday, 10 September. Referring to the recent breakthrough in the farm murder arrest of three suspects, Phetla said the police were still on a manhunt for an unnamed fourth suspect. The three suspects were captured during a pre-dawn raid at a hideout in the Hammanskraal section of Kanana, on Friday, 9 September. The suspects were expected to appear

before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court for a formal bail application on Friday, 13 October. Phetla disclosed all the three suspects were subjected to an identity parade, held at the local police station on Tuesday, 3 October. Police are on the manhunt for these three men and a fourth unidentified suspect.

Rabbit from hat of tricksters Justin Steyn A criminal syndicate has allegedly been doing the rounds in Bela-Bela, carjamming unsuspecting motorists. On Monday, 9 October, Elri Arlow of the Bela-Bela Crime Support initiative said in at least one incident, a motorist had groceries removed from the vehicle. Shortly thereafter an allegedly kindhearted stranger arrived with the groceries, saying he had reclaimed the parcels from the remote car-jammer. But then, she explained, the stranger would demand payment for this “service”. “We received word that there may have been an incident of remote car-

jamming. According to the information I have, grocery items were apparently taken from a car and were returned back to the owner by another party,” she said. Arlow said during the so called “good deed”, a claim of imbursement was made for the reclaiming of these goods. “We believe that this is a new modus operandi and we encourage the public to ensure that their vehicles had been locked before going into stores,” Arlow said. During rural safety meetings at the Bela-Bela police station in the past few months, there was little mention of theft out of vehicle cases but the police have issued a warning as the festive season nears.

Small business community owners up in arms over outsiders Lizzy Bapela

Owners of small business entities at BelaBela’s Extension 8 and 9 have cried foul over the increase in outsiders setting up shop in the neighbourhood. Lucas Phala, chairperson of the Bela-Bela Business Agency and Community Organization, said the main concern was the steady inflow of stores owned by outsiders mushrooming in the area. He said this trend had the potential to deny the local small business community the opportunity to expand and create job opportunities for locals. Phala said members of the organization had meetings with representatives from the Bela-Bela Local Municipality and the SAPS in recent weeks. At the meetings, he alleged, it was agreed that both the local authorities and police monitor the legalities around the influx of store-owners arriving from outside of the area. Phala said what was of grave concern to the local business community was that the new arrivals had shown them letters of approval, allegedly from a local politician.

“The local municipality or any government entity cannot employ all of us. Entrepreneurship is our only hope to feed our families,” he said. Phala said the increase in stores set up by outsiders negatively affected the locals’ livelihoods. He said the Bela-Bela Business Agency and Community Organization would push for further meetings with the authorities to discuss the effects of the developments. In response, ward councillor Freddy Hlungwane denied the allegations that businessmen from outside of the neighbourhood were granted letters of approval. “If beneficiaries of the stands that the tuck-shops are being built at choose to let the foreign business people rent space in their yards, then who am I to deny them? “I understand the organization’s frustrations but, there are by-laws in the municipality, which states that people intending to turn their stands into business sites should apply at the municipal offices and I do not work in that department. “So it is up to the stand beneficiaries as the rightful owners to choose and decide what to do with their stands, not Freddy Hlungwane,” he argued.

Partly cloudy with scattered thundershowers Justin Steyn Outdoor fun-lovers at Modimolle and BelaBela can pack up their picnic baskets for a partly cloudy and warm weekend. The Weather Bureau has predicted partly cloudy but cooler conditions in Mookgophong, with maximum temperatures dropping to 21 degrees Celcius. Against the backdrop of no rainfall predicted on Thursday, 12 October, and Friday, 13 October, temperatures in BelaBela and Modimomolle were expected to warm up to a high of 29 degrees. No rain has been predicted for Saturday, 14 October, and Sunday, 15 October. The volatile weather last weekend led to disruptions of outdoor activities all-round, significantly with the popular Nedbank Cup preliminaries stages at Bela-Bela abandoned halfway through an official fixture. SA Football Association officials ruled that the match between Diesel ‘n Dust FC

Deceased man’s family found

moved swifgtly, assuring all and sundry that the new Bela-Bela Stadium, with better drainage, was to be officially-unveiled shortly.

In Modimolle pre-dawn power disruptions pressed panic buttons on Monday, 9 October, with Eskom and the municipality attributing this to an “earth fault”. Both Eskom and the ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality were working on plans to avoid staggered power cuts by Eskom. Although the “earth fault” could not technically be linked to last weekend’s storms, at Bela-Bela electricity supplies blinked from the cracking lightning. The Weather Bureau disclosed that the severe thunderstorms were a consequence of a cold front moving over large parts of the country, resulting in windy, rainy and bitter conditions. According to the latest weather predictions, citizens across the Waterberg can expect sunny days for most of the forthcoming week, with temperatures averaging 35-degrees Celsius. Severe thunderstorms were expected to hit most of the Waterberg by next Thursday, 19 October.

Educator eyeing provincial award

Hendrik Makgai and his family were in panic mode when their former tenant, Daniel Modimola, passed on and nobody knew of the whereabouts of his relatives. The breakthrough came on Wednesday, 4 October, when Makgai made mobile contact with Modimola’s relatives at Vaalwater. Modimola’s relatives ultimately arrived on Friday, 6 October, to claim their loved one. Makgai approached The BEAT for help on Tuesday, 3 October, saying they were

Hendrick Makgai of Bela-Bela. Photo: Lizzy Bapela worried about their former tenant’s passing, and were desperate to make contact with his releatives at Vaalwater. He told the newspaper the deceased rented a room at his family home in Bela-Bela’s Number 348, Mampatile Section, for three years. He said the deceased continued to visit the Makgai’s as a family friend, even after he had moved to another backyard room at the old location. Modimola reportedly spent time at BelaBela Hospital, before his untimely death. “It is a relief to us as a family that we were able to make contact with Modimola’s relatives,” Makgai said. Modimola was to be buried at Vaalwater on Saturday, 14 October.

Bela-Bela’s Mampatile Primary School educator Daphney Matshidiso Thoka was expected to represent the Waterberg/ Mogalakwena district at the provincial National Teachers Awards (NTA). This comes after the educator received an award for Excellence in ICT (Information and Communications Technology) Enhanced Teaching and Learning at regional level. Thoka, who hails from Ga-Mphahlele in Lebowakgomo, moved from Modimolle Primary School earlier this year after securing a promotion post, to occupy the foundation phase HOD at the Bela-Bela based primary school. Last year she received an award for Excellence in Primary School Teaching, while she was still at Modimolle Primary School. At the time, she continued to obtain third

place at the provincial leg of the awards, where she was representing Waterberg. The date and venue for this year’s provincial leg of the NTA ceremony is yet to be announced. Thoka commended the Department of Basic Education for introducing the ICT enhanced teaching and learning system at schools. “It makes learners more interested in education. It is not only beneficial in the classroom, but also in their day to day lives,” she said. She told The BEAT it would not have been possible if it was not for the support from the headmaster, Lesiba Joseph Matlala, the School Governing Body (SGB) and colleagues who ensured the smooth continuation of teaching, while she was attending the awards. The National Teachers Awards were first launched in 2000, to acknowledge outstanding educators in various categories.

Advanced Paramedics Assistance saves man from drowning at Bela-Bela Justin Steyn Medical services at Bela-Bela rushed to the aid of a man who had allegedly drowned. “We were dispatched to an incident at a guesthouse in the Bela-Bela area for a person who drowned. On arrival the patient had been removed from the pool. “He was not breathing and had no heartbeat,” said Andy Gill, the spokesman for Advanced Paramedics

Assistance group. Gill said heart-related resuscitation (CPR) and artificial respiration were performed, and after a while the patient regained a pulse. He added the man started breathing after arriving at the Bela-Bela hospital. “The patient was rushed to hospital (by ambulance),” he said. He said on arrival at the hospital the patient started breathing for himself but remained unconscious. “We hope the patient makes full recovery. Well done to all the medical

personnel who assisted on the scene, and to the person who rescued the patient from the pool,” he said. Gill issued a word of caution to those eager to participate in water activities. “With the festive season fast approaching, swimming pools and open water are first and foremost on many people’s agendas,” Gill said. He said water accidents happen in seconds, and people can drown in as little as a teaspoon of water, which is enough fluid to choke the windpipe. The following are some of the guidelines for

summer swimming safety: - Consider installing a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the water. - Keep children under constant supervision at all times. - Designate a responsible person to watch the water when people are in the pool. - Inexperienced swimmers should wear approved flotation devices. - Ensure everyone in the home knows how to swim by enrolling them in ageappropriate water orientation and swimming courses. - Never push others into the pool.

Municipality responds to EFF on KPMG

The embattled KPMG headquarters. Photo: Supplied

Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela Local Municipality has responded to a call for the review of the KPMG report by the Economic Freedom

Fighters (EFF). Bela-Bela EFF coordinator, Sello Moswoeu, had challenged the authorities to facilitate the revision of the report into alleged maladministration within the ranks of the Bela-Bela Local

Municipality. Moswoeu was fired up by the backdrop of ongoing damning allegations against the auditing firm’s relationship with the controversial Gupta family. “Due to their (KPMG) involvement

with Gupta-led syndicates to (allegedly) loot state resources, and by their own admission of unacceptable conduct, it is in the best interest of the ratepayers that all contracts with KPMG be cancelled. All provincial heads should further consolidate and submit copies of all the motions submitted across their respective provinces, and a summary of the number of municipalities that submitted against the total number of municipalities where the EFF is represented,” he insisted. Bela-Bela Local Municipality spokesperson, David Raborolo, said the council appointed KPMG to investigate irregularities on the appoitment of certain service providers. “Upon completion of the investigation, a report was tabled and processed through internal sub-committees, and council. It was also made available to the public and the media,” he said. Raborolo further said recommendations from the KPMG report had been implemented. He added the municipality was not in a position to communicate on behalf of KPMG concerning the current state of affairs.

Word artist to launch motivational book Learners host restaurant evening Modimolle word artist Leslie Nkanyane. Photo: Mzamane Ringane

Mzamane Ringane Modimolle’s word artist, Evangelist Leslie Nkanyane, has unveiled the date for the launch of his motivational book titled “God has a purpose with your life”. The twenty-six- year old Modimolle-based

Victory and Salvation Ministry evangelist said the book would be officially unveiled on Saturday, 2 December, at a yet to be announced venue. Nkanyane told The BEAT that he started writing from as early as 2008, when he published the Sepedi novel, “Batho re bolaiswa ke megabaru”, a title referring to general greed. The young writer said his new work of non-fiction was aimed at encouraging both young and old to never give up in life. “I have realised that most of the time we tend to give up easily in life, instead of remaining optimistic until such time that our purpose in life is achieved,” he said. Apart from his love of writing, Nkanyane has a passion for cooking. Nkanyane’s journey dates back to the days when he worked in homekeeping at a local hotel. At the time the would-be chef started asking questions and learning how to experiment with the preparation of different dishes, with the assistance of the chefs. “It all started when I was working as a cleaner at a local hotel. I got curious every time I saw chefs preparing meals, and that’s when I realised the kitchen was my passion,” Nkanyane told The BEAT.

Snail’s pace for literary contest TK Mashaba The response to the massive advertisements and articles relating to Limpopo’s literary contest has been slow in coming. Limpopo Sport, Arts and Culture Department spokesperson, Paulinah Mogodi, on Monday, 9 October, said the first manuscript had been submitted, but could not pin down from which part of the province. Word artists from across the Waterberg and elsewhere have been granted the opportunity to test their writing skills in a provincial literary contest offering an overall R178 000 in prizemoney. Category winners in the six languages spoken in Limpopo stand to each take home a cheque of R12 000. The Limpopo Sport, Arts and Culture Department went for broke, taking full page

advertisements in newspapers across the province, to promote the literary competition. The second prize for each language category was at R10 000, and an amount of R8 000 has been set aside for those who would be named the second runnersup (third). In line with stipulations of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the department has committed an additional R3 000 each, to first prize winners in the previously-marginalised language categories of Sepedi, IsiNdebele, Tshivenda and Xitsonga. This has nudged the overall sponsorship to a whopping R190 000. For further details potential entrants are advised to contact Mr K Sadiki on 015 284 4046 or Ms M P Mogodi on 015 284 4056 or Mr P E Mathabatha on 015 284 4054.

Tshepo Kganyago (from left), Moses Molekoa and Prudence Masila of Waterberg Academy during their last restaurant evening. Christie Steyn The hospitality studies learners at Waterberg Academy at Vaalwater always host restaurant evenings during the third term. “These evenings normally consist of a fourcourse meal that is prepared and served by the Grd 10-12 learners,” said André Bridger, the Hospitality Studies educator at Waterberg Academy. “A limited amount of tickets are on sale just a few weeks before these events, and are normally sold out very quickly,” he said. Bridger explained that the restaurant evenings were used to assess the skills and techniques of the learners.

The highlight of the evenings is usually the last function, with the latest held on Friday,15 September. The menu started with a puree St. Germain soup with puff pastry twists, followed by an entrée of smoked salmon roulade. The main course of chicken jambonette, grilled polenta, stuffed green patty pans and butternut croquettes was served with a berry bavarois and tuilles as dessert. Bridger said the guests praised the learners for the quality of the food on offer, and the service at the event. Bridger said he was proud of each learner in his hospitality class, and congratulated them for the successful evening.

Don’t do a ‘Kgoloko Thobejane’ on soccer lovers

Hendrik Sebelebele of Bela-Bela Pirates FC stops a penalty in spectacular fashion. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba When Diesel ‘n Dust FC manager Gilbert Gyampong predicted his team would win the Waterberg SAB League this season, sceptics suspected he was doing a “Kgoloko

Thobejane” on the soccer fraternity. In case someone wants to know, Thobejane is the Baroka FC head coach who infamously predicted his team would win the Premier Soccer League last season, only to end up sweating it out in the second-tier promotional play-offs.

Gyampong came across more convincing when Diesel ‘n Dust FC stunned reigning league champions, Rapotokwane Qualitho FC, with a quick goal in the Nedbank Cup preliminaries last Saturday, 7 October. The match was, however, washed out after 15 minutes of play following weekend

downpours. Earlier in the day a resurgent Bela-Bela Pirates FC beat Opleft FC 6-5 on penalties, to advance into the next stages of the coveted Nedbank Cup. The score was 3-all at the end of regulation time.

Oscarine Masuluke and Caster Semenya shine on the world stage Mzamane Ringane Baroka FC wunderkind Oscarine Masuluke is on the final threesome shortlist for the 2017 FIFA Puskas Awards. The remarkable achievement is but the cherry on top of World 800m champion and 1 500m bronze medallist, Caster Semenya, being selected among the 10 athletes, who are competing in the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Athletes of the Year Awards. A whole new world was about to open up for Masuluke, who happened to be the sole shot-stoppeer among the three finalists. This should open up a wide-range of opportunities for the village boy, such as his goal being transformed into branding on the broader marketing circuit. Also, there was a real possibility of a film production company in South Agfrica or the international stage considering a documentary on his profile from rags-toriches. Masuluke has made it to the top list of the three finalists who were billed to compete in the 2017 FIFA Puskas Awards,

together with Deyna Castellanos of Venezuela, and Olivier Giroud of France. The Baroka FC goal-minder has received the backing of African soccer legend, the Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha, and CAF Champions League reigning kings, Mamelodi Sundowns FC head coach, Pitso Mosimane. As for the wondergirl Semenya, she has been shortlisted among participating athletes who include World 100m hurdles champion, the Australian Sally Pearson, World discus champion, Sandra Perkovic of Croatia, and World long jump champion Brittney Reese of the US. They were all selected by a panel of experts from across the IAAF continental federations. Fans of Semenya from Limpopo and the broader South African nation have the opportunity to improve her chances of winning the award, by voting on the IAAF social media platforms. The winner was scheduled to be announced at the IAAF Athletics Awards in Monaco on Friday, 24 November. However, the public vote was at 25% from the overall poll. Voting closes on 16 October.

Do you really want to be paid to have your picture published, my foot! We have to rewind back to a few editions ago, and remind our readers The BEAT is somewhat in direct competition with major titles in the mainstream. Last weekend was no different, as this newspaper attempted to carve a niche on the newsstands alongside heavyweights such as Daily Sun and two days later (Sunday), the City Press. Ask several hundred readers from across Modimolle how they found The BEAT newsstands empty by as early as 12 noon, Friday, 6 October! By implication, the newspaper with the headline “Farm murder arrests” beat handsdown the flagship newspaper players from the big cities of Gauteng. With this in mind, we in the newspapers like suggesting there was lack of political education in volatile areas such as Vuwani.

Having said that, we have taken a critical look give an opinion on, say, the aftermath of an armed robbery. That is, the print and electronic at ourselves, to ask as to how much are we media can only report on what doing ourselves, to inform was said inside the courtroom, readers on how newspapers and nothing beyond those work. Mzamane Ringane Modimolle Celtic FC coach André Mavulula was hopeful and confident his team of mostly young players was yet to reach its full potential.

Soccer fans allround agree the boys showed character even after losing the preliminary stages of the Nedbank Cup to homeboys, Modimolle Troublemakers FC 4-3 on penalties. The regulation scoreline was 2-all.

TK Mashaba The Nedbank Cup preminary fixture between Rapotokwane Qualitho FC and Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust has been rescheduled for Saturday, 14 October. SA Football Association officials abandoned the match 15 minutes into play last Saturday, 7 October, due to unsafe underfoot conditions. Torrential rain ahead of and during the match waterlogged the playing pitch, leaving players unable to control the ball through puddles of watter. At the time the fixture was abandoned,

Diesel ‘n Dust FC was leading 1-0. The rules have it that the match should start from scratch, at zero goals for each team. Before the havoc caused by the thunderstorms, Bela-Bela Pirates FC beat Opleft FC 6-5 on penalties, to advance to the next stages of the coveted Nedbank Cup. The Nedbank Cup is South Africa’s only competition open to soccer teams from the lowest to the highest levels. For instance, at the last 32 stage of the competition, teams from the Premier Soccer League all qualify automatically to compete against those from the lower levels who managed to reach this level.

Youngsters cracking from travel? TK Mashaba The youngsters from the Oupa Pontsho Letwaba Education Foundation and Trust (Opleft) appear to be cracking from constant travel. The trust, which is based at the village of Seabe in Mpumalanga, has a team of youngsters playing in the tough SAB Waterberg Region. Due to being forced by the rules or otherwise, to play their “home” soccer games at Bela-Bela, the Opleft players have to travel whether playing away or home. Against this background, the new kids on the block have lost three out of three matches in their maiden season. However, Opleft head Reuben Mochusi said traveling constantly was not necessarily the problem. He said when traveling to Bela-Bela to honour fixtures, management made sure

The team, which is comprised of a blend of largely young and experienced players, kicked off the Waterberg SAB League season on a sour note, after they succumbed 6-2 to Home Defenders FC in the league opener in recent weeks. On Saturday, 30 September, the young players showed character when they faced a formidable Bussel FC at Tankeng sports grounds in Modimolle. After all the huffing and puffing, the two teams settled for a point each with a 0-all scoreline, at the conclusion of the 90 minutes of regulation time. Mavulula praised his boys for being able to regroup following the previous weekend’s huge loss, and securing a point against a tougher opponent in a local derby. “Taking home a point in a derby is a fair result. We created a lot of chances, but luck was not our side,” he said.

the entourage left early, to give players enough time to rest. Mochusi said Opleft had a 2020 Vision to encourage the youngsters to play together until they became senior players as one unit.

Justin Steyn Plans were at an advanced stage ahead of the annual Bela-Bela SuperSpar Marathon scheduled for Saturday, 9 November. Organisers have calmed the nerves of potential participants by assuring them the race would go ahead, even against the backdrop of the fire at the store in recent weeks. “Carel Coetzee of the local SuperSpar values the heritage of the 4-in-1 race and remains the sponsor of the 2017 marathon, ensuring another excellent and funfilled event,” said the Bela-Bela Marathon Club chairperson, Neels Venter in a statement. He called on previous and potential participants to register for the marathon in

their numbers, to show gratitude at the continued support from Bela-Bela SuperSpar, and the latter’s unwavering support over the years. The broader event comprised of, among others, a mass run and walk, over 5km and 10km. Venter said that 21.1km and 42.2km race events were also available to potential participants.
