Ideas for the City:

Pioneering Projects from Across Germany

Every day, people across Germany develop new ideas with creativity, passion and ingenuity. The “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative and Deutsche Bank are honouring innovative, forward-looking projects in the annual competition ”Landmarks in the Land of Ideas”. Good ideas are sought from all regions of Germany that already provide answers today to the challenges of tomorrow. The aim of the competition is to provide a stage for Germany’s most valuable resource: the ideas in people’s minds.

More than 2,500 projects from all over Germany have received prizes since 2006. For the first time, the competition in 2013 reflects the annual theme, “Ideas for the City”, honouring 100 projects that provide solutions to the challenges facing cities and regions in the future.

Many urban centres in Germany and all over the world are booming. While interest in city life is growing, smaller towns and communities are suffering population declines. These developments pose a number of challenges. How can traffic in big cities be managed in the future? How can old and young live together in an aging society? How to power the city of the future? And, last but not least, the question of how to make rural areas more attractive. The themes range from culture, communication, and construction to mobility and living. Companies, research organizations and universities, as well as art and cultural institutions, social enterprises and initiatives across Germany took part in the competition. A high-profile jury representing all areas of society, co-chaired by Professor Dr. Michael Hüther, Director and member of the Management Board of the Cologne Institute for Economic Research, and Professor Martin Roth, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, selected the top 100 “Ideas for the City”. The selected projects can make a sustainable contribution to the city of the future, not only in Germany but all over the world. Whether they are projects and ideas from business, culture, science, environment, education or society, ingenuity knows no boundaries.

The following chapters introduce you to the 100 winning projects in the six subject areas of the competition: Business, Culture, Science, Environment, Education and Society. At the beginning of each chapter, six well-known experts look into the challenges that cities and regions are facing in

Germany.

Business is the Backbone of the Cities There are around 3.6 million business enterprises in Germany, mainly small and medium in size. They are the economic backbone of cities and local authorities. Not for nothing do regional business development policies seek to attract and retain companies. But low trade tax rates alone have long ceased to be enough. In the future, local authorities must increasingly strengthen soft location factors. They include an attractive living environment, sufficient childcare facilities, good cultural and educational offerings and, last but not least, an intact environment. New approaches are needed, and the successful cities will be the ones that are prepared to restructure their inner areas. Now more than ever, cities need reliable partners to support them, whether they are local authorities, companies, universities, or cultural institutions. All players will assume a role and bear responsibilities with their interests and resources.

Private parking allowed! A new online platform and mobile apps enable people to share parking spaces intelligently Looking for a parking space can cause stress. In inner-city areas, in particular, finding a place to park can take longer than the drive itself. Heavy traffic clogs the streets and parking possibilities are limited. The Cologne platform ampido.com offers a simple but intelligent solution: Owners of private parking spaces can rent them by the hour. At the same time, drivers are shown the closest free parking space on the ampido parking space app or the website and are navigated there comfortably. Payment is made online so drivers don’t need small change for parking meters.

Quiet nights for neighbours A new development reduces the volume of industrial air-conditioning systems It is not only traffic that makes cities noisy – sounds from the ventilation systems of companies also put a burden on employees and residents. With a novel approach, ebm-papst, makes air-conditioning and refrigeration systems quieter. People living close to industrial buildings, hotels, and supermarkets, are no longer disturbed – especially at night. Not only does the noise level sink, the technology saves more than a fourth of the energy needed, thus also benefitting the wallet.

Small stakes, big gains Citizens invest in energy saving projects and reap benefits from the profits Bettervest has an ambitious aim: it wants Germany’s citizens to be the biggest investor in energy efficiency and simultaneously the biggest beneficiary. The principle is simple: via a crowd-funding Internet platform many citizens can invest small amounts together. The money is used to finance energy-efficiency projects of cities, municipalities, companies or associations – for example, a switch to LEDlighting. In return, the investors get a share of the savings made from the conversion. The project greatly benefits the climate, the economy, and the citizens.

My car, your car A new car-sharing technology makes car sharing easy, reliable, and convenient - and benefits the climate The Berlin-based car-sharing platform carzapp enables people to rent their cars to others at the spur of the moment, without having to hand over the key, and with no risks. Thanks to the novel ZappKit hardware, the temporary driver can open the car using a special smartphone app. Car owners and renters communicate via a website. The owners decide themselves when to rent their car or transport vehicle, to whom, and at what price. The climate idea behind the new technology: Private cars can be used more efficiently and fewer new cars need to be manufactured, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide arising from automobile production in the medium term.

The city as ecosystem A network of experts develops sustainable urban concepts from social, cultural, and aesthetic standpoints Eleven partners, six locations, one network – that is CITYFÖRSTER, or “city forester”, a team of architects, urban planners, and designers. Their credo: like a forest, a city thrives on the diversity of its inhabitants and places. Urban developers therefore have to keep their eye on the whole. In the design of public spaces and urban living situations, CITYFÖRSTER seeks interdisciplinary exchange. The designs reflect this: according to the principle of “more with less” – achieving more with less effort – they consider social, cultural, and aesthetic aspects and rely on a manner of building that conserves energy and resources.

Harnessing the sun’s energy on German roofs An interactive map helps homeowners decide whether to switch to solar energy or not According to experts, every fifth German roof could be equipped with a solar thermal system – a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. The solar roof cadastre provides information on who is eligible in more and more cities and municipalities. For each roof, an interactive map shows whether it is suitable for a solar thermal or photovoltaic installation - simply, free of charge, and with no strings attached. If desired, the need and output are calculated on an individual basis. In addition, the cadastre enables cities and municipalities to recognize the potential slumbering in public spaces and shows how it can be tapped.

Welcome to Jena! A municipal service arouses skilled workers’ enthusiasm for Jena and offers job prospects there It’s not always easy for people to settle in a new city. That´s why local companies in Jena attract potential employees through the city’s welcome service. Jena-based companies can book an orientation tour for preferred job candidates, giving them and their families a personal tour of the city before they sign their contracts. The prospective employees learn about local kindergartens and schools, residential districts and leisure facilities. The initiative was launched due to the lack of specialized workers in Jena, which the city wants to counteract with this campaign.

Unearthing urban treasures An association is encouraging reuse of huge raw material stocks in municipalities Cities and municipalities are giant raw material mines, ranging from tin cans to steel girders for buildings. Thousands of tons of valuable treasures are slumbering here, ready to be lifted. With lectures, seminars, and congresses, Essener Verein Urban Mining e. V. intends to create awareness of the merits of reusing resources from municipalities. This endeavour requires for example building passes that record which raw materials are used for construction in the city. In addition, storage facilities have to be found and cost-effective recovery technologies developed.

Getting to work in two minutes A company builds a factory in a housing complex, creating added value for employees and the environment The only sound is children laughing in the yard – although there’s a factory next door. Living and working in the city of the future could resemble the situation at Wittenstein AG’s Fellbach site. Thanks to soundproofing, the drive system manufacturer’s new plant is so quiet that it is perfectly compatible with the surrounding residential area. As a result, employees can live so close to their workplace that they don’t have to drive. That means a higher quality of life for the staff and fewer emissions, benefitting the environment and the climate. The company also profits from the company’s “urban production” – due to its proximity to urban-based research organisations and cooperation partners, for example.

Category Culture

Art and Culture as an Inspiration for Urban Areas The city provides the best possible stage for artistic forms of expression. But how do we communicate art, provoke dialogues or, quite simply, interest people in their surroundings? We must succeed in making art and culture an integral part of people’s everyday lives: in museums and concert halls, on smartphones and in public spaces. We all face an increasingly significant task. As adult “culture pilots” we must introduce children and young people to culture, get them enthusiastic about it, and activate them. Multimedia communication techniques in particular will make a lasting mark on urban culture. The task for cultural institutions will be to keep pace with this development and not to forget the content. They must offer the public genuine added value and not just technical baubles. Art and culture will, after all, only carry conviction by means of timely and relevant content.

Since 2011, it has transformed Moritzplatz, a square in Kreuzberg that used to be virtually empty, into a lively creative centre. Culture vultures from all over the world are drawn to the former factory building: There are publishing houses on the upper floors, a kindergarten under the roof, a theatre and club in the cellar, and in between “Planet Modulor” with various trade, crafts, and gastronomy companies. This example shows how privately financed creative industry can be a success.

Cities Help Get Innovations Up and Running How do we want to live and work in the city of tomorrow? What are our visions for its urban centres? An answer to this question is inconceivable without science. From data clouds that enable city dwellers to access any information at any time, anywhere to robots that in future will make daily life easier, scientists are already testing new ideas for sustainability in the city and driving social reconstruction forward. A successful network of researchers, users and industry experts can push this change forward even faster. Both in politics and in science and technology Germany has many approaches, ideas and system know-how that can be marketed around the world. In the future, more attention must be paid to establishing international contacts and advertising research ideas from Germany. If we succeed in combining existing knowledge from entire cities and regions, we will have no difficulty in finding creative solutions to future challenges.

Comfortable climate thanks to
energy-efficient windows Always the right temperature in summer and winter - thanks to a coated window glass that reacts to solar heat Warm in the winter, cool in the summer – that is what intelligent windowpanes will be used for in the future. How does it work? The secret is an energy-efficient coating, which is transparent and reacts to solar heat. At low temperatures it lets heat through, and at high temperatures it reflects the rays like a mirror, ensuring that the heat doesn’t enter the room. This saves lots of energy that otherwise would be used for heating and cooling. In the face of dwindling resources and rising heating costs, the use of intelligent windowpanes has great potential for regulating energy.

Until now, there has been a lack of compact and low-loss storage options for heat energy. Leuphana University in Lüneburg is working on a solution: the “thermal battery”. Salts inside the battery serve as a storage medium, yielding water when heat is applied and releasing heat when water is provided. The new method is an important step towards independent decentralized heating in the city of the future.

Fish meets tomato With a novel facility urban farmers can sustainably breed fish and grow vegetables at the same time A greenhouse is not only conducive to the growth of tomatoes, but is also a place where fish such as the Nile perch can thrive, because both like heat. Researchers have taken advantage of this fact and developed a sustainable method that can be used for urban farming. In their patented facility, the nutrient-rich wastewater from the fish tank is purified and subsequently used to water vegetables. With this system, water is conserved during production and there are virtually no emissions. In the future, tomatoes and fish can be cultivated in the middle of cities and served fresh directly from the source.

Blueprints for the city of tomorrow Scientists investigate the secrets of the city of tomorrow and develop models for urban life What will the city of the future look like? Fraunhofer researchers investigated this question in the Morgenstadt (City of the Future) initiative. Their conclusions: residents will generate their electricity themselves and feed surplus energy into the public grid. Building facades will clean the air and reduce traffic noise. Roof surfaces will be used for large gardens and for agricultural purposes to decrease transport distances and emissions from freight traffic, thus improving the quality of urban life. The researchers are looking for inspiration in metropolises around the globe, including Berlin, Singapore, Tokyo, New York, and Copenhagen.Â

Clean, Green, Eco-friendly – The City as a Local Recreation Area Germans increasingly define quality of life in terms of sustainability and being close to nature. Both will become a key location factor as cities and local authorities face the task of complying with a growing public desire for ideal environmental conditions such as clean air or more green spaces. The prospects of achieving these objectives will improve if the underlying legal, commercial and political conditions are right – and if everyone thinks and acts in an ecofriendly manner. One possibility is to switch to alternative propulsion technologies. The future will see more and more battery- or natural gaspowered cars on city streets. Politics, business and science must develop affordable models and further upgrade the alternative fuel infrastructure. Local power generation for heating or electricity also has great potential. innovative ideas are needed to convince more city dwellers of the benefits of solar power.

Their aim is to reduce harmful carbon-dioxide emissions in the industrial area by half. Bottrop residents have initiated more than 125 projects to ensure that the former coal district becomes a shining example of the use of alternative energies in tomorrow’s cities. For example, miners’ housing is being energetically modernised and a solar atlas indicates the places with the best exposure to sunlight. In addition, tests are carried out in a tip to find out how geothermal heat is stored.

Waste as a source of energy A city obtains biogas from its residents’ organic waste 60,000 tons of biowaste are produced each year in the German capital, a substantial amount that can be used sustainably. Recently the Berliner Stadtreinigung, Berlin’s municipal cleaning service, began operating a modern biogas facility. When the organic waste ferments, biogas is produced which after being treated is fed into the natural gas network. The waste fleet also benefits from this, as 150 gas-powered garbage trucks use this fuel. Thus not only the organic waste, but half of Berlin’s entire waste is collected in a climate neutral way. Thanks to the biogas facility, 2.5 million litres of diesel and 12,000 tonnes ofCO2 emissions can be saved each year.

Urban Areas Create Knowledge for All Opportunities in life depend on what we know and on the fund of knowledge of the society in which we live. Thanks to computers and the Internet the amount of available information is increasing rapidly. If the growth rates of recent decades continue, our fund of knowledge will double daily by 2050. In view of this information explosion we need suitable knowledge management. If we do not want to entrust this management solely to modern information technologies, education must promote this competence. If the city of tomorrow is to remain viable, we must handle all this knowledge and the knowledge of so many as intelligently and effectively as possible. Mediating between cultures and consolidating the sense of a common bond among city dwellers will be an important task for the educational sector. A further challenge for the future will be to interlock educational players more closely and to create and strengthen a culture of autonomous learning.

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, too, studying space is at a premium, especially during exams. An unusual idea is providing help and saving municipalities money: Since April 2013, students have studied in the lobby of the state theatre in Karlsruhe. The “TheaBib”, or theatre-cum-library, offers students 150 seats during the day, wireless Internet, and a coffee bar. In the evening, the stage is returned to the actors, and the students now know what is playing.

Youth think urban In workshops devoted to the future and on a learning platform, pupils investigate urban trends Treasures in piles of garbage, renewable energies, working worlds of the future: Hamburg youth participating in a workshop devoted to future issues called “TOMORROW IN MY CITY” are dealing with such issues. The core of the project for pupils starting in middle school is an online portal with information about urban trends and developments. At the same time, the young researchers exchange ideas in real future-oriented workshops with experts from companies, associations, and institutes. The objective is to sensitize the pupils to challenges facing their city and to inspire them to come up with their own ideas.

People are the
Soul of the City Globalization, demographic change, and immigration are changing the face of society. Nowhere will that be more readily apparent in the future than in the cities. The cities are the place where more and more people of different origins and creeds, from different social backgrounds and with individual lifestyles live together. This diversity offers opportunities and poses challenges in equal measure. In the future, cities and citizens will be measured by how well they master these challenges. Co-determination and participation of residents will play a key role because it is people who make a city worth living in and give it a soul. In view of societal changes, participation of older people will grow increasingly important, and civic commitment as social capital will gain a new significance. If it is to unfold in the future, this commitment must, however, receive financial support and be held in esteem by politics, business, and society, while enjoying the scope that it needs for development.

Help for helpers A training programme shows citizens and service staff how to help people with dementia living alone A person continually wires the wrong amount of money into a bank account or can’t find her way to the checkout counter of a supermarket. Who can help the growing number of people with dementia get their bearings in urban areas? Health workers are trained to assist dementia patients, but bank clerks, salespeople, and neighbours often also lend a hand in everyday life. The German Alzheimer Society has developed a training program to sensitize citizens to the needs of those affected. Municipal authorities and other institutions can use the program to impart information about the illness to citizens.

With a marketplace, town hall, day-care centre, library, shopping centre, and restaurants, “Old Cotton”, as it was called, is now the site of an appealing offer for all residents. And plans are in place to build flats on the grounds, which will make it easier for older citizens in particular to take part in social life. Centrally located, the mill is easy to reach for everybody.

Welcome to the Land of Ideas! Germany is the land of ideas. The “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative works with different partners to carry out projects and hold competitions to focus attention on the country, its people and their ideas. Germany has specific economic, geographic and cultural location factors which shape its image. Like any location, however, it is primarily defined by its people. They, their ideas and their activities form the basis of and provide cohesion for society. This is where the “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative comes in with a platform. The initiative seeks to use its projects and competitions to encourage people to make their ideas and innovations public and visible, thereby creating a social climate characterised by imaginative flair and a wealth of ideas. Each person is needed and can contribute towards the success. Individuality in diversity is a definitive element of the Land of Ideas. Positioning Germany in this sense requires numerous players and partners from many different areas of society – politics, economy, culture, and science. The initiative works with them to award prizes to ideas in competitions, make them visible in projects, and continue implementing key issues.
