INSIGHT FROM THE PRESIDENT OF DECA INC.

Challenge yourself and your members to ASPIREHIGHER

A

s DECA advisors, one of the things we tell our student members at the beginning of the year is to set realistic goals that force them to move outside their comfort zones. Welcome back to the beginning of a new year that should change the comfort zone for all of us as we challenge our members to ASPIREHIGHER. DECA continues to grow, expand and change each year as we implement new and ambitious ideas and opportunities for our members. Excitement and anticipation fill the air as our new brand takes hold, a new blazer patch has been introduced and a new year with new members is upon us. We all know about the dedication and hard work that are needed to be successful. When we ask our members to ASPIREHIGHER, we ask them to confront challenges they have never faced before and to hurdle obstacles blocking their path to achievement. Renewed participation in DECA, more chapter involvement, ambitious community projects and more school and parental involvement coupled with dedication and hard work will instill ASPIREHIGHER

principles in our members in positive and powerful ways. As president of DECA Inc., I pledge to support you in any way that I can so that you and your members are able to successfully face the many challenges of a difficult future. To me, the beginning of each year has always been like taking members to spring training. How will your year start? Will your members take up the challenge to ASPIREHIGHER? Will they make it to the “World Series” in Salt Lake City in April? I wish you the best as you offer your members the keys to success and opportunity and I look forward to seeing all of you at ICDC in Utah.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sincerely,

Roger Cartee, President Board of Directors, DECA Inc.

Don’t just settle for the standard when you can ASPIREHIGHER, a theme that challenges ambitious DECA chapters, members and advisors to reach their peak potential. Through goal setting and visioning, DECA members can build upon their current strengths and attributes through their desire to engage in DECA activities that prepare them for college and professional careers. <www.deca.org/page/aspirehigher

DECA TRAIN THE TRAINER CERTIFICATION COURSE

New cadre of DECA advisors ready to deliver professional development Twenty-four DECA advisors earned certification as DECA trainers at the second DECA Train the Trainer certification course held June 9-11, 2011, at DECA Inc. headquarters in Reston, Va. The certified trainers are charged to deliver professional development on behalf of DECA during the 20112012 academic year. DECA’s education department designed the certification program to train key leaders of associations to effectively deliver presentations and content useful to DECA’s local chapter advisors. Five unique workshops that can be delivered in a variety of formats at local and state professional development conferences or events were presented. Topics included: • Building a Successful Program with DECA • Organizing Your DECA Chapter • Promoting Participation in DECA • Creating Brand Champions for DECA Chapters • Enhancing Instruction with DECA In addition, a DECA Update was provided to educate chapter advisors on new DECA programs and changes in the competitive events program. As part of the training materials, classroom instructional ideas were included to be utilized at the workshops. As part of the certification program, the trainers created an association professional development plan to implement during the upcoming academic year. 2
