INTERNATIONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE

The DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) is the culmination of the DECA year. More than 23,000 high school students, teacher-advisors, business professionals and alumni gather for several days of DECA excitement.

DECA members demonstrate their college and career-ready knowledge and skills by participating in DECA’s industry-validated Competitive Events Program, aligned with Career Clusters, National Curriculum Standards and 21st Century Skills in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality, management and entrepreneurship. These members have qualified to attend based on superior performance at the district and association levels. More than 1,000 business professionals serve as expert judges to evaluate DECA members’ mastery of these concepts.

In addition, thousands of members participate in DECA’s Emerging Leader Series, which helps them attain 21st Century Skills in the areas of collaboration and teamwork, communication, critical thinking and problem solving and creativity. One highlight is the involvement of executive mentors who provide college and career advice.

Thousands of DECA advisors and educators participate in administering DECA’s Competitive Events Program and Emerging Leader Series, while also participating in professional learning activities.

The Grand Opening Sessions, led by your 2023-2024 Executive Officer Team, will feature the annual parade of chartered associations, recognition of the top 10 membership chapters, recognition of the top three Muscular Dystrophy Association fundraising chapters, a compelling message and energizing entertainment by world-famous dance crew, the Jabbawockeez.

Featured Speaker

Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Kido Okeleke’s journey began on the basketball court, where he discovered a deep love for sports, entertainment and marketing. This passion transformed into a series of remarkable achievements, with Kido achieving first place at Collegiate DECA ICDC in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing competitive event.

Kido’s insatiable curiosity and enthusiasm for sports led him to a pivotal internship at Adidas Canada, where he honed skills in finance, marketing and event coordination. As his career continued, he held roles at TD Securities and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors ownership group. He has also fostered relationships with global brands such as OVO, Google, Axe, Red Bull and Drew House.

Today, Kido serves as a Global Product Line Manager II in Special Projects for Jordan Brand at Nike World Headquarters in Oregon, where he combines his passion for streetwear culture and deep marketing knowledge to help create apparel products.

The AIM HIGH Flight Academy is a FREE, three-week program designed to inspire young adults to explore aviation. Students receive one-on-one training from Air Force and Certified Flight Instructors in a classroom and in the sky.

The AIM HIGH Flight Academy is a three-week program that helps students gain confidence in aviation and prepares them to learn everything necessary to achieve up to 15 flight hours. A typical day in the program includes three key segments: flight simulator time, academic classroom time and flight time. You’ll be assigned to a flight, paired with a wingman and an Air Force mentor to study and fly with throughout the program. Other activities you’ll participate in include team building, study time and character development.

• Must be 16 by June 1st*

• Be enrolled in high school or graduating seniors*

• A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better

CONFERENCE SAFETY

Your health and safety is important! We are excited to welcome over 23,000 attendees to DECA’s International Career Development Conference and want to promote the health and safety of everyone involved. As part of our plans to host a safe event, please follow our event requirements and recommendations below.

BE MINDFUL

Please understand that everyone has a differing comfort level, and some attendees may wish to socially distance when possible. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Always cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.

IF YOU’RE SICK, STAY BACK

Monitor your health daily. Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath or other symptoms of illness. If you develop symptoms of illness, do not come to the event. If you develop symptoms while attending ICDC, stay in your hotel room and contact your advisor immediately.

PLAY IT SAFE AT THE HOTEL

Follow these guidelines when at your assigned conference hotel:

• Be alert when checking in. Protect your cash and valuables by keeping them with you.

• Never say your room number loudly enough for others to overhear or give it to anyone you do not know.

• Be sure to lock your door when you are in your room and when you leave.

• Call the front desk to verify any unexpected deliveries or room service.

• Do not leave your door open while you are in the room.

• Do not leave your room after curfew.

• Never leave money or valuables unsecured in your room; use your hotel room’s safe.

GENERAL SAFETY TIPS

• Be where you are supposed to be. Delegates are required to attend all sessions and activities assigned, including workshops, competitive events, committee meetings, general sessions, etc., for which they are registered.

• Always tell your advisor where you are going.

• Don’t go out alone; travel with at least one other person. There is safety in numbers.

• If you see any suspicious person or activity, notify your chapter advisor, conference staff or hotel management.

• Don’t wander through shortcuts. Ask the hotel for the most direct route to restaurants and shopping.

• Always use sidewalks and crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing.

• If you are not at the conference venue(s) or at an official conference activity, do not wear your conference name badge.

The Jabbawockeez are a world-famous dance crew who first gained fame in their national television appearance on America’s Got Talent in 2006, before winning the MTV Hip Hop reality series, Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) in March 2008.

The most notable group to come out of the MTV reality series, the Jabbawockeez are synonymous with the show and universally recognized as America’s true best dance crew.

The crew uses their signature plain white masks and gloves to guide the audience’s attention away from individual identities and towards a unified group.

Known for their creativity, one-of-a-kind choreography, athleticism, and intricate synchronization, each member brings a different technique and perspective to form the original style that makes the Jabbawockeez so distinct.

The name Jabbawockeez is derived from Lewis Carroll’s poem Jabberwocky, in which the titular character is a dragon that roamed the “tulgey wood” in the children’s story Through the Looking-Glass.

The Jabbawockeez have accomplished more than any dance crew before, effectively transforming the way people view dance and paving the way for new methods of musical expression.

Most hotel properties in Anaheim are within walking distance of the Anaheim Convention Center. For those that are not, Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) will provide five transportation routes allowing for easy and convenient connections between the hotels and the Anaheim Convention Center (ACC).

CONFERENCE PROFESSIONALISM

CODE OF CONDUCT

The Board of Directors for DECA Inc. requires each delegate attending the International Career Development Conference to read and complete the ATTENDANCE PERMISSION FORM and return to the CHARTERED ASSOCIATION DECA advisor as partial completion of attendance requirements.

1. The term “delegate” shall mean any DECA member, including advisors, attending conferences (high school, collegiate, alumni, professional).

2. There shall be no defacing of public property. Any damage to any property or furnishing in the hotel rooms or building must be paid for by the individual or chapter responsible.

3. Delegates must wear identification badges at all times.

4. Delegates shall refrain from using inappropriate or profane language at all times.

5. Delegates shall refrain from written, verbal, physical or electronic activities that may lead to harassment, hazing, bullying or damaging property.

6. The use of any harassment against anyone on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, age, gender, sexual orientation or disability is prohibited.

7. Delegates shall respect the rights and safety of other hotel guests.

8. Delegates shall not possess alcoholic beverages, narcotics or weapons in any form at any time under any circumstances.

9. Delegates shall refrain from gambling—playing cards, dice or games of chance for money or other things of value.

10. Use of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes by delegates is prohibited at all DECA functions.

11. Delegates must adhere to the dress code at all times.

12. Delegates must not dress or behave in a manner than can be interpreted as sexually explicit.

13. Students shall keep their adult advisors informed of their activities and whereabouts at all times.

14. No delegate shall leave the hotel (except for authorized events) unless permission has been received from chapter and chartered association advisors.

15. Delegates should be prompt and prepared for all activities.

16. Delegates should be financially prepared for all activities.

17. Delegates are required to attend all sessions and activities assigned including workshops, competitive events, committee meetings, etc., for which they are registered unless engaged in some specific assignment scheduled at the same time.

18. Delegates will spend nights at their assigned hotel and in their assigned room. No guests allowed during curfew hours. Delegates will be quiet at curfew.

19. Curfew will be enforced. Curfew means the delegate will be in his/ her assigned room.

20. Chartered associations will be responsible for delegates’ conduct.

21. Tasteful casual wear will be accepted during specific social functions as designated during orientation

22. Delegates ignoring or violating any of the above rules will subject their entire delegation to being unseated and their candidates or competitive events participants to being disqualified. Individual delegates may be sent home immediately at their own expense.

DRESS CODE

Professional appearance is an important aspect of the overall preparation of DECA members for the business world. To that end, DECA supports a dress code for its career-based functions that exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism while being non-discriminatory between genders.

DECA’s board of directors has developed the following official dress standards for the International Career Development Conference. Students, advisors and chaperones must follow the dress code. Competitors must wear an official DECA blazer during interaction with the judges. While official DECA blazers are not required during briefing and testing, professional business dress is required. Professional dress should also be worn to all conference sessions including workshops and special meal functions such as breakfasts and luncheons. For a more polished, professional appearance, it is recommended that attendees wear appropriate hosiery/socks.

All skirts and dresses must be at or below the knee.

• Clothing with printing that is suggestive, obscene or promotes illegal substances

• Unacceptable types of dress shoes include boat shoes, canvas or fabric shoes, flip flops or casual sandals, athletic shoes, industrial work shoes and hiking boots.

When judging adherence to the dress code, DECA directs advisors, teachers and chaperones to use observation as the tool for assessing compliance. It is inappropriate to touch a student or their clothing as a means of determining adherence to the dress code. DECA members who are not appropriately dressed will have a reasonable opportunity to meet the dress code prior to seeing a judge or being allowed on stage.

HELEN BROWN | PENNSYLVANIA

Helen Brown has served as Chair of the DECA National Advisory Board and member of the DECA Inc. Board of Directors from 2022-2024, serving as treasurer for 2023-2024. As a member of DECA’s National Advisory Board, Helen has engaged with thousands of members and advisors at DECA’s educational conferences at the association, regional and international levels.

Helen is the Academic Outreach Manager for Vector Marketing, where she currently oversees campus recruiting, academic philanthropies and an Academic Advisory Board in the U.S. and Canada. She began her career at Vector in 1991 as a Field Sales Manager while attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

In addition to her service with DECA, Helen is the former treasurer and president of the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers (EACE) and former co-chair of the Principles of Committee for the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Helen loves photography, traveling and helping young people realize their dreams.

HONORARY LIFE AWARD

Honorary Life Membership is the highest award DECA can bestow on an individual. DECA is pleased to present a new recipient of this distinctive and deserving fellowship.

JERRY R. DIGIOVANNI | PENNSYLVANIA

Mr. Jerry R. DiGiovanni graduated from Norristown Area High School in 1985, where he served as president of his high school’s DECA chapter. After graduation, Jerry attended Villanova University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and served as the president of The Accounting Society. He later attended Temple University, earning a Master’s Degree in Education.

Jerry began his professional career as an auditor with KPMG/Arthur Andersen LLC in Philadelphia, PA. Jerry was an active and successful private real estate investor and later worked for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services.

Through the years, Jerry remained active in DECA as a volunteer, and in 2002, he was named the Executive Director of Pennsylvania DECA. During two decades of service as Executive Director, Jerry displayed unwavering kindness, support and enthusiasm for the student members and advisors of Pennsylvania DECA. His commitment and mentorship made an incredible impact on thousands of students in the state. Under Jerry’s leadership, Pennsylvania DECA experienced unprecedented growth and student involvement.

Jerry always had a special place in his heart for Pennsylvania DECA. He listed the association as a significant beneficiary to his estate, and the funds will be used to establish the Jerry R. DiGiovanni Pennsylvania DECA Endowment Fund. The endowment will be utilized to provide collegiate scholarships and financial assistance for students to attend association and international conferences.
