WELCOME

GREETINGS FROM PENNSYLVANIA DECA Thank you to Jerry DiGiovanni, Pennsylvania DECA association advisor, and the Pennsylvania DECA association for hosting The Ultimate DECA Power Trip. We appreciate all of your hard work in recruiting speakers and competitive events judges and providing direction for programming.

It is Pennsylvania DECA’s great privilege to welcome you to the Ultimate DECA Power Trip in Philadelphia, Penn.! On behalf of Pennsylvania DECA, we hope you enjoy your time in one of America’s most historic cities. You can truly begin your #LIMITLESS year in DECA in the city founded in freedom. Philadelphia is the original home of a revolutionary spirit which continues to drive America to this day. The past meets the present here, as skyscrapers and historical buildings stand side-by-side. Nowadays many young Philadelphians embrace a culture filled with “throwback” influences, blending modern trends with storied local history. A diverse set of companies call the Philadelphia region home, ranging from broadcasting giant Comcast to apparel favorite Urban Outfitters. These businesses make Philadelphia one of the most vibrant economies in the East and a top spot for internships. Arguably Philadelphia’s greatest draw is its nearly 100 institutions of higher learning, including some of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the country. At the top-ranked University of Pennsylvania, America’s first business school was founded by industrialist Joseph Wharton. For many aspiring business leaders, Philadelphia is their launching point for future success. As you walk through the city’s bustling neighborhoods, take time to explore the rich history at every corner. Snap a photo at the iconic LOVE statue, or visit Independence Historical Park. Make a new culinary discovery at Reading Terminal Market. Enjoy all Philadelphia has to offer, as you network with students and professionals from around the world! From all Pennsylvania DECA members, we wish you an incredible Ultimate DECA Power Trip experience. We want you to show us how you live #LIMITLESS in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American liberty!

The Learn-Build-Share Framework for Young Entrepreneurs

Want to gain a startup mindset in just eight hours? This fast-paced, hands-on workshop features experienced entrepreneurs sharing their proven techniques, time-saving tools and valuable tips to help you do just that. In this interactive experience, you’ll learn and practice the Learn-Build-Share framework and pick-up the startup skills needed to: work lean and collaboratively on teams, systematically find important problems, understand what solution to build, iteratively design your prototype, and effectively make a pitch. Top teams will get the chance to give their pitch in front of the full DECA audience at Sunday’s closing session. Get more startup resources at www.quarterzero.com

Problem-Solution Fit Startups must minimize waste—or fail. Before putting months and months of effort into building a product, you first have to understand if it’ll create real value. On Saturday morning, you’ll learn and apply techniques for knowing: who your customers are, what significant problem you’re solving for them, which solution fits the best, and how to measure success.

UMIT GOKCE Umit Gokce is a tech entrepreneur, digital product designer and innovation educator. He has founded startups focused on Internet media, eLearning, and youth development in the US, Europe, and Asia. Umit has completed over 125 product design projects. He created the Empathy-Driven Framework for Innovation and Problem Solving featured in university and high school curricula as well as corporate workshops. Umit is a university lecturer on entrepreneurship, innovation and design. He also mentors undergraduate and graduate students and serves on the advisory board of the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business.

Prototyping and Pitching The afternoon is time to design, test, and pitch like startup pros. You’ll quickly learn best practices for creating interactive prototypes using collaborative software and test with potential users. Teams will get coaching on how to effectively pitch their startup including presentation design and delivery—making good use of time-saving templates.

VIPIN THEK Vipin Thek is the co-founder of Wellbeing Project, an initiative to support social entrepreneurs to create well-being in their personal and professional levels. He is also a Director at Ashoka, where he leads the Changemaker School Districts work to integrate empathy and changemaking skills in the district’s mindset, curriculum, systems, and culture. Before joining Ashoka, he co-founded Tulir - Center for the Prevention & Healing of Child Sexual Abuse in Chennai, an organization which works on the prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA). Vipin has a master’s in social work and is an Integral Life Coach, a kundalini yoga teacher and has extensive experience leading transformation based work for communities around the world.

Team Kick-Off Get things started on Friday with a night of activities. You’ll find out who in the room you connect with closely, form a startup team, pick a theme to focus on, and share your new entrepreneurial vision with everyone. This first learning experience will be gamified and purposeful, and you’ll move fast!

10 HABITS YOU CAN MASTER TO COME UP WITH GREAT (STARTUP) IDEAS BY CHRIS KOSEDNAR, PRODUCT LEAD, QØ CREATIVITY IS A SKILL THAT CAN BE LEARNED. It’s a commonly held belief that some folks are born with an innate ability to be creative, and others aren’t. Actually, everyone can have great ideas with the right environment, prompts and habits. Creativity isn’t about creative people, it’s about creative acts. EVERYONE CAN GET BETTER AT HAVING GREAT IDEAS. Ideation is a skill, and like any skill, it takes dedicated, conscious practice to improve. What spurs you to have your best ideas? Whatever it is, do it more often. When can you practice more? Make it happen. What other techniques can you employ? Brainstorming is not the only kind of ideation. As you work to enhance your creativity skills, you’ll be amazed at how many great ideas you have. YOU ARE BETTER AT IDEATING THAN AN ADULT. Seriously, you are inherently better at ideation than adults, but you lose this as you get older so you need to practice. While you are naturally better at ideation, you also have a tendency to overlook existing solutions that you could augment, tweak and mash together creatively to build a new solution. Don’t always try to reinvent the wheel. Consistently coming up with great startup ideas isn’t luck. With the right practices, environments and habits, we can all get better at generating ideas.

10 HABITS OF GREAT IDEATORS Start with a need. It was Ben Franklin who said that, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” a principle he applied throughout his life to a host of innovations that are impressive for their breadth and variety, as well as their ingenuity.

5.

Ask stupid questions. Albert Einstein had a knack for asking very good questions that were deceptively simple and childlike. His question, “What would it be like to ride a beam of light?,” led to his theory of relativity.

2.

Create a supportive environment. The iconoclastic designer Yoshiro Nakamatsu has created an extremely personalized, sophisticated environment to stimulate and nurture his creativity, including sensory deprivation tanks and special stereo goggles that project patterns intended to put him into his creative sweet spot. Ever noticed how your best ideas come in the shower?

6.

Encourage wild ideas. Walt Disney pushed his creative staff to overthe-top designs for Disneyworld installations and movie plots. He continually challenged his team to come up with new ideas, to amuse and amaze him; according to several accounts he demanded independent and daring thinking outright.

3.

Gather different voices. People who are similar often think the same way and come up with the same ideas. Since we are looking for variety, get lots of different people involved.

4.

Feed your head. Charles Darwin was astute not only in his observations, but also in his own process of learning and relating to the world around him. For him, travel involved seeing diverse data and making connections.

7.

Keep an idea log. Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks are the manifestations of an extraordinarily creative, inquisitive mind. A single page, for example, taking off from his interest in curves, shows an exercise in the geometry of curves, a drawing of curly hair, grasses curing around an arum lily, sketches of trees, curve some clouds, rippling waves, of water, a printing horse, and the design of a screw press. We recommend this idea log.

8.

Go for quantity. Pablo Picasso said, “The fact that I paint such a large number of studies is simply part of my manner of working. I do a hundred studies in a few days, whereas another painter might spend a hundred days on a single painting. By carrying on, I will open windows. I will go behind the canvas, and perhaps something will be brought out.”

9.

Use the buddy system. Having a partner to bounce ideas back and forth off of is key. You will notice things in each other’s ideas and build off them.

10. Make bad ideas better. Thomas Edison’s motto was, “There is a better way. Find it!” In his description of how he invented the kinescope, he said, “All I have done is to perfect what has been attempted before, but did not succeed.”

FROM SELLING BASEMENT JUNK TO FOUNDING A ROBOT COMPANY WORTH $2M: THE STORY OF MICAH GREEN, 19-YEAR-OLD CEO. By Micah Estis Green, 19-year-old CEO of Maidbot and an alum of QØ

because I saw and heard case studies. It all seems like a fairytale from the outside, but then you start doing it and immersing yourself with other people. You can do it, you can found a company. I was hooked. After QØ, entrepreneurship became something more than a hobby. I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

HOW DID IT CHANGE FROM PASSION, TO SOMETHING YOU THOUGHT COULD BE A STARTUP? I found QØ. It was unlike anything I had experienced before. The sessions were 72-hour sprints. We would get there at 7 a.m. and not leave until midnight or later, and it was amazing. You have this group of people that are throwing themselves at this problem, in the zone, working together, bouncing ideas, like a train that is constantly moving.

HOW DID YOUR COMPANY MAIDBOT START? I was working as a housekeeper in a hotel as part of a hotel operations class at Cornell. I would work in the kitchen, front desk and as a housekeeper. I realized that the industry had been untouched for many years, and innovation in the hospitality space was a huge opportunity. Because QØ had taught me to focus on really understanding the problem, I started bringing around a notepad, interviewing people, figuring out the toughest parts of job for them, digging deeper into costs, and using a stopwatch to time each task while cleaning rooms. I was blown away by how old fashioned and traditional the whole industry was. The housekeeper role, in particular, has the highest variable cost, incredible injury rates and inconsistencies. The bottom line is it’s a dull, dirty, dangerous job that is perfect for a robot.

Not only were my peers excellent, but the advisors and mentors and industry experts were so good. Hearing our advisors speak, it became real,

WHAT’S GOING ON CURRENTLY AT MAIDBOT? We’re working on Rosie, our newest robot. It focuses on cleaning floors,

What drove me to keep working, was the idea of “bringing robots to the people,” not just in factories or movies, or on the Jetsons. This idea became real to me and not just in the distant future.

a task that takes 15-20% of the time when cleaning a room. But it’s more than just a vacuum, it’s a mobile computer in every room – an indoor data platform that collects all sorts of information. We can figure out the dirtiest areas in a room, where people are spending their time, how long it takes to clean each room, potential for mold, and start tracking other volatile chemicals. We spoke with all these huge hotel brands, all who have tried Roombas and other popular consumer robot vacuums. They aren’t built for industrial work, as the batteries would melt after a few weeks of continuous use. They are all using a fleet of Rosies. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF WHEN YOU WERE 16? A big thing is passion and dedication and the effort that it takes. I had a lot of interests in high school, and before that, I was always interested in lots of different things. But I would say really pinpoint what you care about and why you wake up and do that. I mean, you can dilute your time – there is always going to be something in the way or distracting, but overcome obstacles and reasons why not and why it won’t work. At QØ you are all in, all together with other young successful entrepreneurs, for the whole program, that helps direct passion into something that can have success.

71 #DECAIEC

HOW DID YOU AWAKEN YOUR INNER ENTREPRENEUR? When I was seven, my friend and I got junk from my basement and sold it to neighbors. You know, normal stuff. A few years later I got into robotics, mostly the programming side. I played with a lot of robotics kits. I loved the idea of building something functional from nothing. I joined the robotics club and found this group of super passionate people. We were constantly looking up YouTube videos on how to build things. All the information is out there, it’s not some future thing, it’s here today.
