SERIOUS FUN

WELCOME TO THE 2008 RADIO LOLLIPOP LONDON CHARITY BALL!

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FROM GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL

Radio Lollipop has been providing care, comfort and play to children in hospital for 30 years. The London team is one of the largest in Radio Lollipop’s worldwide family.

Congratulations to the Radio Lollipop team on their first ever Charity Ball.

Since Radio Lollipop was established at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2005, it has expanded from a small band of volunteers helping children on four wards, to providing fun and entertainment to children on 21 wards, 3 nights a week. In addition, the team recently rose to the challenge of opening a second Radio Lollipop station here in London, at the Evelina Children’s Hospital. The team now has a band of 160 volunteers who dedicate their spare time, as well as having full time jobs. I would like to congratulate the Radio Lollipop London team on holding their first ever Charity Ball in support of the children at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Best Wishes, Hedley Finn MBE Founder and Life President Radio Lollipop

It seems like longer than three years ago that the Radio Lollipop volunteers first stepped foot on the wards here at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. They say that laughter is the best medicine and this certainly holds true with the Radio Lollipop volunteers. This unique group provides an extremely valuable and really popular non-clinical service to our children, their siblings, parents and nursing staff. Everyone really looks forward to Lollipop nights. We know that children of all ages respond positively to Radio Lollipop as they request less pain killers during broadcasts. Less nursing staff is also required to perform routine activities when children are distracted by Radio Lollipop volunteers. The Radio Lollipop team here at GOSH has brought forward our thinking about play in hospital by five years, which is no mean feat. This is due, not just to their unique service, but also the drive and enthusiasm of volunteers in supporting projects like the ‘tube station’ play space. I would like to thank you all so much for attending this evening and ask that you please give generously to such a worthy cause. On behalf of our patients, parents and nursing staff – thank you. Patti Hogan Voluntary Services Co-ordinator Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust London WC1
