Hello everyone and welcome back to the Domain. Our WaiBOP Premiership run of home games continues this weekend with the visit of table-toppers, Ngaruawahia United, while on Sunday we welcome West Hamilton United in Waikato Ladies Division 1. I’m not really going to talk too much about football this week. We all know Saturday’s game will be a tough assignment as our Swifts take on a side that has just knocked a Northern Premier League side out of the Chatham Cup. All I can hope for is that the game passes without great non-footballing incident. Unlike last week’s match against Ngongotaha. That game was ended early after a serious injury to Hayri Cihan - probably the person currently playing senior football in the whole WaiBOP region least deserving of such a fate. Hayri is a vital member of our club, from playing senior football to coaching his 10th Grade Tigers, from sponsoring junior and senior teams in Matamata to providing aftermatch meals courtesy of Fez Kebab. And for just being Hayri. What it did show is how quickly life can change. It also showed how unimportant a game of football can be, but how important the game of football is. Club members have rallied ‘round Hayri and his family and, through a shared connection due to our sport, will help him on his road to recovery. Ngaruawahia is also dealing with massive emotions due to Jared’s illness. I’d like to offer my deepest sympathies on behalf of every Swift to Jared, his family and the widerNgaruawahia football community. The social media images and footage after last Saturday’s win in the cup will live long in the memory and show how important, and loved, Jared is at Ngaruawahia United. Hopefully everyone enjoys this weekend’s games. I won’t see you on the sidelines this week, so you’ll have to make a bit of extra noise to make up for me... Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece
