Sakura S

akura (Japanese Cherry Blossom) is the very essence of a contemporary Japanese Restaurant providing a truly authentic cuisine.

Classic Japanese cuisine demands Respect for both the ingredients and simplicity in its preparation – these two tenets are fundamental to the philosophy of Japanese cooking to emphasise the balance of each delicate flavour in every dish in order to produce, ultimately, an orchestrated symphony of art. It is this simplicity that is perhaps the most difficult to achieve.

oth cooking methods and eating habits are inextricably linked to Japan’s historical circumstances. A policy of meat prohibition from 1603 until 1867 in an attempt to stop aggression in the population meant that fish became very popular, and the fact that Japan is an island gave the people access to a diverse range of fresh fish and led to the custom of eating the fish raw.

ere at Sakura all the above essentials are adhered to. If fish is to be eaten raw it has to be as fresh as possible and so this is specially flown in. Almost without exception the ingredients used at Sakura, from the rice to the wasabi, are from Japan and so authenticity is unquestionable.

he highly skilled chefs prepare all dishes with great care. This skill is never more evident in the preparation of the famous sushi and sashimi. Let’s not forget, however, that Japanese food does not consist of only eating foods in their raw state. There is a considerable skill in grilling various foods to ensure that food retains its flavour and stays moist without being adversely affected by the fierce heat of a hot plate. At Sakura there are three special show tables, each capable of seating approximately ten people, where Teppanyaki is prepared and cooked in front of you by extremely dextrous chefs who entertain by demonstrating their flair and techniques with knives and other cooking implements.

Enter through its doors to a very pleasantly air conditioned environment and open space. Inside the restaurant, the main seating, the elliptically shaped bar with seating and the Teppanyaki tables occupy three distinct levels. Around the walls there are bamboos and the mood lighting and other decorative lighting provide a very welcoming and relaxing ambience.

11 the Japanese food on offer. Japanese restaurants, probably across the globe, may be considered by many as too expensive - gold Sakura however offers real value for money. The menu provides a varied choice of Sakizuke i.e. salads and cold appetizers which may include fish, prawns or chicken. Sushi – slices of fish place on vinegared rice are available using tuna, salmon, sea bass, prawns or eel for as little at €3.50. Temaki – these are hand shaped cones containing, for example, salmon and mango, or tuna with cucumber as well as a purely vegetarian option. Maki – these are the familiar hand-shaped rolls with various fillings including prawns, avocado, tuna and so on. Six pieces cost as little as €5. Sashimi – this is the raw fish option and tuna, salmon, prawn, eel and sea bass are all available starting from €7 for five slices. If you are unsure of what to have then why not go for the Combination Platters. This provides the diner with the opportunity to try a mixture of the above dishes – a great dish to share and for as little as €8. Apart from the traditional Japanese there are many hot appetizers and tempura to choose from and the fourteen main dishes provide variety enough for all tastes including the famous Beef Teriyaki and Miso Glazed Black Cod Fillet. In addition to the above there are Stonegrill dishes and of course the Teppanyaki tables. Food is not complete without the appropriate drinks to accompany it. The evidence unearthed by archaeologists in Pyrgos and Erimi heavily supports the thinking that Cyprus was responsible for triggering the spread of winemaking through Greece, Italy and France.

At the proclamation of the Republic, Cyprus adopted the English Common law and the English principles of Equity, as modified since 1st of May 2004 when the Republic of Cyprus became a full member of European Union, by the adoption of European Laws, Regulations and Directives.

Tax System.

The tax legislation that came into effect 1st January 2003, aimed to conform to European Union law and the EU code of conduct and to eliminate harmful tax practices. This new tax system enabled Cyprus to claim its position as a non-offshore European business centre, a suitable location for local and worldwide investments. 2003 legislation evolved into one of the most comprehensive legislations in the EU having one of the most competitive corporate tax systems and the only EU approved “Open Registry” regime with a very wide and legally endorsed Tonnage Tax System (introduced in 2010) for ship owning, management and chartering.

Simple Taxation

The Tax framework was formed in such a way that it is beneficial for residents and non-residents alike. Corporation tax is one of the lowest flat tax rates in the EU at just 12.5%. Dividends from Cyprus corporations paid to nonresident shareholders are exempt from any with-holding tax. Residents pay Special Defence Contribution of 17% (2014) on dividends. Personal income tax is based on residency status and tax residents are taxed on their worldwide income (exemptions apply). Cyprus offers a tax allowance of €19500. Income above that threshold is taxed at ratios beginning 20% and maximum 35% for income over €60000. Dividends and interest are exempt from personal tax (taxed under Special Defence Contribution). Company’s net income from holding Royalties and Rights is 80% exempt from Corporation Tax. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on sale of immovable property is 20%. There is no CGT on sale of shares (except shares of a company holding immovable property). The Cyprus Tonnage Tax System is the only EU approved (compatible with the requirements of the EU acquis) shipping taxation. TTS taxes ships based on their tonnage and covers profits from shipping activities, profits on sale of vessels, interest of funds used (not for investment) and dividends paid related to shipping profits (directly or indirectly). The etymological derivation of the word ‘Cyprus’ comes essentially from the tree that is responsible for the production of black gold. The Carob tree (Ceratonia silique) known locally today as Teratsia was in years gone by known as Keratea xeylokeratea. This tree was considered so representative of the Island back in the day that Cyprus was once called Kerasteia. The Carob tree has a history spanning back over some four thousand years.

aybe not so much now but once upon a time the fruit of the Carob tree was extremely valuable for villagers since at the time they represented the main source of income for the rural population. Going much further back it is said that carobs were an important part of St. John the Baptist’s diet, hence the humble carob was also known as the “bread of St. John the Baptist” and according to the Bible it is carob that sustained the ‘prodigal son’.The Carob is also known as the ‘locust bean’ The Jews used to hide from the Romans amongst the carob branches and eat the fruit to survive. The other link between the carob and gold stems from ancient Greece. The carob was called ‘keration’ and the weight of precious stones and gold were measured against the seeds of the carob because of their consistent size and weight. The Latin variation of the word ‘keration’ became ‘carat’ and the Roman pure gold coin – the solidus, weighed 24 carob seeds. Thus the number of seeds became the measuring stick for all the remaining qualities of gold. Later, this weight was fixed at exactly two grams. Carobs are extremely nutritious. They have a far richer calcium content than milk and contain some 350 mg per 100 grams. Carobs contain 4% protein and 63% carbohydrates. They are also rich in phosphorus, vitamins A and B and also have iron, nitrates and other minerals in smaller quantities. Used as fodder to feed animals, Carob is also used in human food products and is often substituted for chocolate and cocoa. The main commercial product of the Carob, however, is the syrup that is used in the manufacture of biscuits, chocolate and other confectionary. Medicinal products such as cough linctus are also made from the bark and roots of this versatile plant.

There are many benefits Lowers Blood Cholesterol Levels: Carob naturally contains polyphenols, which help with blood cholesterol levels in a way similar to dietary fiber. Dietary fiber helps lower cholesterol levels. A 2010 issue of “Plant Foods for Human Nutrition” reported on a human study that found a 4-gram serving of polyphenol-rich fiber twice a day led to a decreased level of serum lipids.

Natural Antioxidant:

The polyphenols in carob are also powerful antioxidants, protecting your body from damage from free radicals and environmental toxins. A 2002 publication of the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry” included an in vitro study of the antioxidant ability of carob pod polyphenols. The study determined that even the pods of carob contained polyphenols. These were shown to have a distinct antioxidant ability when adjusted for polyphenol concentration, which was lower in the pods than in the beans.

contains polyphenols, which help with blood cholesterol levels in a way similar to dietary fiber. Dietary fiber

helps lower cholesterol levels.

Remove the seeds from the pods, soak 300g of broken up carob pod in 750ml water for 12hr, process in a blender in small portions, continue soaking for 30-35hrs. Filter though a linen towel and pour into bottles. Place in the fridge for a day to settle. Filter the solution through cotton wool in a funnel, measuring the volume at intervals until it represents 15% of the original solution. Care needs to be taken to prevent the syrup from turning into solid caramel. The syrup makes a delicious topping for ice cream, in milk shakes or in savoury dishes as a marinade for meat.

#2 To make carob powder: Pressure-cook the pods with water for 20min. This softens the pods and aids seed removal. Discard seeds and cut pod into small pieces then dry. When dry place in a blender and grind into a powder as required.

#3 To make sweet carob cubes 2 cups sugar, 1/4 cup butter, 3/4 cup ground carob, 2/3 cup milk, 1 tsp vanilla essence, pinch of salt. Place all ingredients except vanilla in a heavy saucepan and bring to the boil stirring constantly. Simmer until liquid reaches the soft boil stage. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Beat mixture until thick. Pour into a buttered tray or dish and allow it to cool. Cut into cubes.

Cyprus is a member of the European Economic Area and the European Union having enacted MiFID into its local legislation in 2007

There have been two recent pieces of legislation that influence the way in which financial companies operating in Europe conduct business. The first is the Insurance Mediation Directive (IMD), the second, and larger more significant piece of legislation is known as MiFID which stands for the Markets In Financial Instruments Directive. MiFID is followed by the 30 countries in the European Economic Area (being the 27 countries of the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and provides a standardized regulatory framework for financial services firms operating in the EU. Importantly, it allows one firm to “passport” its services into another country as long as it holds the relevant MiFID license. Cyprus is a member of the European Economic Area and the European Union having enacted MiFID into its local legislation in 2007 which means that Cypriot based FX brokeragees (as well as other types of investment firms) can offer their services to citizens of any other EEA country. The regulator responsible for ensuring that MiFID is implemented correctly in Cyprus is the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission based in Nicosia, known as CySEC. Due in part to its low corporate tax rates and European Union membership many financial companies are attracted to Cyprus and the island boasts a large financial sector. As well as brokerage firms there are many companies based in Cyprus which specialize in company maintenance & administration services, such as Eltoma which also has an office in Moscow. There are also specialist firms such as MAP S PLATIS based in Limassol that offer a range of necessary financial services including helping organizations obtain the necessary MiFID license to offer financial services in Cyprus.
