Bee Hotel Workshop

Bees provide critical ecosystem services in both managed and wild landscapes. While honey bees are typically the first species that come to mind when we talk about pollination, in reality, there are over 400 known bee species found in the state of Pennsylvania. Can you believe that most bee species live individually, not in a social colony, like honey bees? Join Natalie Boyle, Assistant Research Professor for the Department of Entomology at Penn State, to learn how you can support and protect wild bees in your own backyard. Discover the importance of bees and pollination, their life cycles, and discuss practices you can take to help them, such as planting wildflowers, limiting pesticide use and providing nesting habitat. Build and decorate a Bee Hotel to hang in your backyard so you can help the pollinators around your home. The mission of the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority is to serve Centre Region residents of all ages throughout the year with a variety of recreation opportunities and access to facilities to enrich their lives through participation in programs, facility use, provision of leadership resources and technical assistance, and serving the participating municipalities' residents and groups. The Authority membership includes five municipalities--the Borough of State College and the Townships of College, Ferguson, Harris, and Patton, and the State College Area School District. Each municipality appoints one volunteer representative to serve a five-year term, plus one representative from the State College Area School District who is appointed by State College Borough Council. In October 2011, the five participating municipalities re-authorized the future of the Authority for January 2012 through December 2061. Many members of the Authority also participate in their municipality's Parks and Recreation Committee; this dual service provides a great conduit between the Authority/Agency and the municipality like Capital Improvement Projects, timelines of various park improvements, recommended programming for the community, policies and procedures, and more. The Authority is a registered 501c3 non-profit and registered as a PA Bureau of Charitable Giving organization. More info. about the Authority to include the members' and their terms, the history of the Agency (55 years in 2021) and the Authority (since 1974), as well as By-Laws and links to meeting agendas and minutes, can be found here: http://www.crpr.org/about-crpr-authority The Authority works directly with the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Agency on its Fees & Charges, regional park development, pool operations, nature center operations, and much more!
