This is available due to a change in this year's printing schedule of our Active Guide. We made a change to this year's schedule when we thought something else would be affecting the print schedule. Unfortunately, that didn't come to fruition, so we'll be reverting back to our regular printing schedule in 2023. In the meantime, here are listings of programs that are open now for registration, and which take place during the final weeks of August and into early September. LOCATION: Orchard Park Basketball Court PROGRAM: 44120 Soccer Shots Soccer Shots Mini is a high-energy program introducing children to fundamental soccer principles, such as using your feet, dribbling and the basic rules of the game. Through fun games, songs, and positive reinforcement, children will begin to experience the joy of playing soccer and being Socceractive.Shots Classic utilizes creative and imaginative games to focus on basic soccer skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting. We also highlight a positive character trait each session such as respect, teamwork, and appreciation.

Youth Sports Start Smart Basketball Start Smart Basketball is an active outdoor program that will take place with each family unit (one parent and one child) working on basic basketball skills together. Start Smart Basketball teaches children the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-on-one and spend quality time together with their favorite adult. The program focuses on teaching children and parents skills in dribbling/ ball handling, passing/catching, shooting, and running/agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Each participant will be provided with two mini basketballs to use for the class and then take home toDATE:keep.

Youth Instructional Classes L'il Striders Balance bikes simplify what small children have to think about when first learning to ride. L'il Striders is built around five 45-minute sessions of learning, fun, socialization, and instruction sure to ignite a passion for riding. Once they’ve developed balance, it’s easier to stick some pedals on and teach them the pedaling motion and how to stop. Balance bikes are included for class use.

It is played both indoors or outdoors on a badmintonsized court or with a slightly modified tennis net. Participants use a paddle and a plastic ball with holes and the game can be played as doubles or singles. Join members of the local Pickleball League for basic instruction and lots of fun! Fall Wooden Bat League Captain's Meeting at John Hess Softball Complex Thursday, August 25, 6 PM Season: Setpember - October $500 per team Start Smart Football Start Smart Football is a developmentally-appropriate introductory parent/guardian-child-based football program for children 4-6 years old. Pairs work together to develop individual skills. Start Smart Football prepares children and their parents for organized football without the threat of competition or the fear of injury. Age-appropriate equipment is used for teaching throwing, catching, kicking/punting, and running/ agility. Each parent/child pair gets to keep the equipment that includes a football, kicking tee, flag belt, and participant manual. Tyke Hikes Trek the trails together with your tyke! Explore something new at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with this six-week, hour-long, outdoor program led by a Millbrook Marsh Naturalist. Tyke Hikes incorporates short, hands-on activities, nature play and stimulates curiosity in the surrounding natural environment. Program held outdoors rain or shine; please dress for the weather. Millbrook Marsh Nature Center Bird Walks with The State College Bird Club Start your day off right by observing birds that are migrating to and through the Centre Region. Led by members of the State College Bird Club, this program is open to all ages and is great for beginners. Please dress for the weather and bring binoculars. In the case of heavy rain, the walk that morning will be canceled. A suggested donation of $5 per participant is appreciated. Registration is not required. Meet in the Spring Creek Education Building for a light breakfast and a brief introduction to the basics of bird watching. POLLINATORS! The Musical - 1 PM Monarch tagging demo - 2 PM POLLINATORS! The Musical - 3 PM

LOCATION: Millbrook Marsh Nature Center INST.: Doug Wentzel Monarchs at the Marsh Celebrate the magic of the annual monarch migration with live monarch tagging and other activities, bookended by performances of POLLINATORS! The Musical, a half-hour puppet show presented by the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden. In story and song, our pollinator puppet pals teach us about their unique lifestyles and habits--and how we can support them. You'll leave with a smile on your face, a song in your heart, and a better understanding of how to help pollinators.

In this program, we look beyond the typical fall holiday traditions and learn more about what an equinox is. Join Our Get Me Moving Group for some fitness that fits your lifestyle. Banish Stiff muscles by stretching and doing core conditioning with us. You'll have lots of fun and meet some great folks while getting fit! Classes are held at the Active Adult Center on Monday and Thursday evenings.

Active Adult Center Active Adult Hiking Group Studies show that spending time in nature boosts energy, improves immune function, concentration and mood, increases vitamin D and reduces stress. Hiking is beneficial to Active Adults and improves heart health, reduces muscle loss, keeps your body flexible and increases balance while preventing falls. In the Centre Region we are fortunate to have so many natural spaces to enjoy, from local park trails and regional biking paths to multiple state forests and state parks just outside of State College. Join the Active Adult Hiking Group for weekly hikes in and around the Center Region to explore the beautiful trails this area has to offer! Contact the Active Adult Center to obtain a schedule. (814) 231-3076. Hikes are held on Tuesdays between 9 AM-1 PM and are FREE! Healthy Steps This on-going program is designed to improve balance, flexibility, strength and reduce the risk of falling. All equipment is provided. This class uses exercise bands, foam balls, and hand-held weights. Exercises are done in a chair or standing. Free classes are open to ages 55 and over and are held at the Active Adult Center in the Nittany Mall.

Silver Spurs Line Dancing Line dancing is a fun and interactive exercise class set to music. By participating in this exciting class, you will achieve benefits such as: reduction of stress and depression; increased energy and serotonin; improved flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance; strengthening of bones and improved cardiovascular health; increased mental capacity while exercising cognitive processes; and enhanced dynamic and rapid-fire decision making. No experience needed. Exercise just for the fun of it, and/or participate in community performances of the Silver Spurs.

Yoga for Fitness and Stability (Session I and II Combo)

PROGRAM: 44764 HIIT Fitness HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give an all-out, 100% effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. For this class, we will be using a 50-second intensity period followed by a 10-second rest period. The class is a 5x4 meaning four different intervals repeated five times. You will need a set of hand weights, a mat, and a chair (sometimes). This class is either in-person or live online through Zoom. Instructor: Janet Jonson, ACE Group Fitness Instructor.

A stronger and more flexible body is a more mobile body. During this 60-minute class, we will explore postures and exercises that will help you build strength and flexibility, both physically and mentally. Focusing on movements that mimic those of daily living and including a touch of Pilates and strength training just for fun. This class is suitable for beginners and experienced yogis alike. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mats, and all other equipment will be provided. Instructor: Jessica Minelli.

Weight Training

Weight training is a type of strength training that uses weights for resistance. Weight training provides stress to the muscles that cause them to adapt and get stronger. Effective weight training depends on proper technique. This class is designed to strengthen and tone the upper and lower body using proper and safe techniques.
