think all of us are ready for some warmer temperatures, sunny skies, and green grass! Let us help you begin to think about summer and all the fun just around the corner! There are so many things to see and do this summer, but we hope you’ll consider joining us for some of the great programs and events happening with Centre Region Parks and Recreation! We’ve got a brand new program, “Rec On The Go,” that will be coming to you this summer! Watch for more information regarding locations, times, etc. For the third time, the Summer Tennis League is back and open to all player levels! Get those racquets ready for summer! The second Welch Cardboard Regatta is back with a new division! Soon, there will be some new geocaches in the area, so plan to get outside with the family and find these treasures! And don’t forget our summer standards: Touch A Truck, Arts Fest Kids Day, Kids On Wheels Parade, and the Youth Triathlon! We’ve got a program, event, or park for everyone, so we hope to see you this summer enjoying the great outdoors alongside Centre Region Parks and Recreation!

Meet the Centre Region Parks & Recreation Authority

Each participating municipality (5) appoints one volunteer representative to serve a five-year term on the Centre Region Parks & Recreation Authority, plus one representative of the State College Area School District is appointed by State College Borough Council. The Authority meets monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 12:15pm. During the winter, the meetings are held at the COG Building and in good weather, the Authority will meet at various parks. The schedule is posted on the COG website if you’d like to join us! You can also find videos of the Authority meetings on C-NET. Let your preschooler find and explore a world of excitement and adventure by sending them to KIDVenture Minis with CRPR! Each week will be filled with themes, outdoor adventures, special guests, water play, lots of new friends and daily activities that will make this summer one of the best! We will make moon rocks, play planet games, and pretend to be Astronauts, all while having fun and making friends. Let’s All Move Week! - Come and join us during this fun-filled week to get active and make healthy choices! This week will be full of physical challenges--games, relay races, and dancing are just some of the many activities that will get your mini up and moving!

Pint Size Picasso Week! - We will let our minds run wild and unleash our inner artist. Show up ready to get messy as we dive into a world of color and paint. Draw and mold some pieces of art guaranteed to make moms and dads proud. July 8-12 A Week at the Beach! – What is summer without some time at the Beach? KIDVenture Minis will (No camp on 7/10) have the beach brought to them at camp: we will make sand castles, play water games, and enjoy the best of summer. July 15-19 Zookeeper Week – Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Learn about all different animals, play animal themed games, create animal art, and explore cool and colorful critters from around the world. July 22-26 Carnival Craziness Week - Step right up to the greatest show at camp! This marks the week of the KIDVenture Camp Carnival. We will use all of our creativity to make our carnival booth, play games and share our excitement with friends and family at the Carnival on Thursday, July 25. July 29-Aug. 2 Build It Week! - Are you ready to build something? It’s all things construction this week! So, put on your hard hat and join us in the construction zone for loads of building fun, both indoors and outdoors. August 5-9 Sports of All Sorts Week - Channel your inner sports star while trying out all sorts of sports. We may even make up a few of our own. Come ready to play!

Engineering & Architecture For Teens Summer Camp

Middle School students are welcome to join Bricks4Kidz staff in this challenging, fun, and educational camp that is geared just for them! Campers will use LEGO technical components, motors, and bricks to create dynamic vehicles, machines, creatures and architectural structures from around the world. Expand your engineering skills and creativity as we tackle these Black Diamond Challenges! Each camp will create different Black Diamond Challenges, so feel free to sign up for both! This exciting Musical Theatre camp will feature your favorite songs from MARY POPPINS. Vocal, acting, and dance lessons will be enhanced by fun theatre games and activities. Canoe Camp

Great for first-time boaters or those who wish to strengthen their technique. Campers begin by learning the equipment basics: life jackets, parts of the canoe, and paddle. Summer Camps continued Fly Fishing Camp

Centre County has some of the best trout streams in the world! Campers learn the lifelong hobby of fly fishing with hands-on instruction from patient, local fly fishers while fishing local ponds and world-renowned streams. Casting, stream reading and stream ethics are just a few of the techniques campers learn throughout the week. Rods and reels are provided for use during camp. Campers should dress for the weather, bring protective eyewear (sunglasses), and pack a snack and water bottle. A swim safety evaluation will be scheduled for all campers prior to the start of camp. Treasure Hunting in the Centre Region Camp Do you like treasure hunts? If the answer is yes, then this camp is for you! Spend the week exploring the Centre Region and discover hidden “treasures” (geocaches) you never knew were there! People place caches in secret places with GPS coordinates and we hunt until we find them. Campers will learn the basics needed for geocaching and about the website to find additional caches in the region, as well as caches all over the county. GPS units provided for use at camp. Join local artist Susan Nicholas Gephart to explore the natural world and to connect to the environment through outdoor painting! Young artists will use their senses to discover the wonders nature offers while applying their creativity to sketch and paint their own masterpieces. Campers will have the opportunity to work with different mediums including pencil sketching, watercolor, and pastels, and will leave camp with lifelong skills to continue to create beautiful pieces of art. All skill levels welcome. Teens must be able to work independently and creatively and focus on both guided and free art activities for the five-hour time period. CRPR is opening the doors to adventure for your teen this summer with this camp for kids entering grades 6-8. Teen Treks is an active camp that embarks on three day trips to awesome places in PA. Summer Camps continued Rec On The Go

Centre Region Parks and Recreation will bring fun and games to a park near you this summer as part of its NEW mobile recreation program, Rec On The Go! The program’s goal is to get kids out of the house by providing them with a wide variety of recreation activities at parks near their homes. This low-cost program will take place at neighborhood parks throughout the Centre Region and will be staffed by parks and recreation personnel who will lead activities, create the fun, and help your kids make strong memories over the summer. Kids’ Activities: Activities may include organized field games such as Capture the Flag, Parachute Games, Gaga Ball, table games, sidewalk chalk, and arts and crafts, just to name a few. We’ll even have rainy day activities under the pavilions! It’s fun for all! The program is flexible, so it can serve just a few kids or larger groups. This program is open to children, ages 8-12 yrs., and parents can opt to register for the entire nine weeks (one afternoon/week) or by the week. Entire Summer - Fees are for all nine weeks. Trek Thru Tytoona

Spend the day in the underground of Central PA as you explore the Tytoona Cave Nature Preserve Area with an experienced local caver. Mountain Biking 101

State College is a great place to mountain bike and this is the perfect class for you if you want to learn more about the basics of riding, where to ride, and the Nittany Mountain Biking Association (NMBA). Skills covered will include: braking, bike/body position, cornering, how to navigate common obstacles found on trails, basic bike maintenance/repair and trail etiquette. Private lessons are available for adults and children that don't know how to ride a bike or learned a long time ago and want a refresher. This flag football league is operated by the Centre Region Parks and Recreation for children going into grades 1st-7th, and is open to children at all skill levels with an emphasis on improving skills in a safe, competitive, player-focused environment. The league is committed to providing a positive football experience in a safety-first program through USA Football’s “Heads Up” Football Program. All coaches will be trained in “Heads Up” Football procedures and will be required to complete a Coaching Certification through USA Football. This training includes techniques on how to properly teach football skills with an emphasis on player safety. The league will also have USA Football certified Player Safety Coaches that are trained to ensure that “Heads Up” safety protocols are respected. The league will operate three times per week with games on Sunday afternoons and practices Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Practices will begin in mid-August at Spring Creek Park, then all practices and games will move to Oak Hall Regional Park by Labor Day weekend. Teams will be formed into two or three divisions with all players practicing and playing at the same sites on the same days. The fee includes a jersey to keep.

Summer Tennis League

This semi-formal tennis league is designed to provide play for people with busy schedules. You will receive a season schedule, and you will have one week to play each match; this year’s schedule includes additional make-up time to accommodate for vacations and weather cancellations. Matches can be played at any of the tennis courts in the CRPR parks on the day/time that works best for the match players. You will be provided options for reporting scores regularly. Everyone will be matched with someone with similar ability. The regular season will open on June 3 and will end on September 15; there will be a season-ending tournament on Saturday, September 28, starting at 8:30am. Each person that registers will be provided with one can of new tennis balls, which can be picked up at the CRPR office. Balls will be provided for the season-ending tournament as well. Please use your computerized rating through the USTA to choose your playing level; if you are selfrating, please use these guidelines, National Tennis Rating Guidelines, to help you choose the best division. For doubles teams, each member of the team needs to register as an individual. If you don’t have a partner, please use the class named “RI Need A Partner” within your desired division when registering and CRPR will match you if possible. Participants will complete activities and explorations specifically designed for scout groups that meet all or some of the requirements for a badge, while exploring Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with a naturalist. Millbrook Marsh Nature Center Activities continued Kayaking Excursion on Bald Eagle Creek

Enjoy a leisurely guided paddling trip on the Bald Eagle Creek after meeting at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center. Kayaks, paddles, PFDs, and transportation to and from the stream are provided. PITCH, HIT & RUN LOCAL COMPETITION SUNDAY, MAY 5 • 3:30 PM REGISTRATION • 4:00 PM EVENT BEGINS OAK HALL REGIONAL PARK It’s time for our traditional Spring competition! Scotts’ and MLB’s “Pitch, Hit & Run” is a FREE, national program that offers boys and girls, 7-14 yrs., the chance to showcase their baseball and softball abilities, and it is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. Boys and girls compete together in four different age groups: 7-8 yrs., 9-10 yrs., 11-12 yrs., and 13-14 yrs. Age is determined as of July 16, 2019, and a birth certificate is required for age verification. Hey kids, show your patriotism and be part of the FREE Annual CRPR Kids on Wheels Parade on July 4. Decorate your bike, scooter, stroller, or wagon and meet us at the corner of Locust Lane and Foster Ave at 9:30 AM. The parade starts at 10 AM and ends at Friedman Parklet where we celebrate our nation’s birthday with some watermelon and parachute games. A fantastic way to start off the holiday!

Special Events continued Welch Pool Cardboard Regatta

Build your own boat, and race it at Welch! Boats must be made from cardboard, paperboard, and duct tape ONLY (colored duct tape is OK for decoration). Boats may be a maximum of 7’ long and 4’ wide. Paddles/ propulsion must also be homemade using same materials or use your hands/feet. Race course will be one length of the pool or 25 yards. Racers will be divided by division/category and may be separated into heats, depending on entries. NEW CATEGORY THIS YEAR: Mini Boats! Build a mini boat and race it in the current channel (just boats in the water, no swimmers)! Boat construction is the same as the larger boats. Mini boats may be a maximum of 1’ long and 6” wide. Race course will be one length of the current channel. Racers may be separated into heats, depending on entries.

SPECIAL EVENTS

AWARDS: 1st place in each division for the fastest boat, best overall boat design, best overall costumes, and “The Titanic Award” for the most spectacular sinking! We will host pre-judging at 4 PM (all entries must be present) the races begin at 4:30 PM. Awards to follow final heat. Costumes must be pool/swimmer safe. The Leisure Pool will remain open for swimming during the event. Lifeguards will be on duty. Deadline to register all boats: Friday, July 5 at 8 AM. Romantic Moonlight Walk

Wrap up your special evening with the one you love at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center! Special Events continued Pedal, Splash & Dash Youth Triathlon

This annual event is open to youth ages, 6-13 yrs., with varying distances! Swimming will take place at Welch Pool; the bike portion will use the bike path from Welch Pool to Blue Course Drive, and the run will be held on the SCAHS field above the pool. Participants must be equipped with appropriate swim wear, their own bicycle and helmet, and running shoes or sneakers. Parents/guardians should be present to assist their children with event transitions. Event will be held rain or shine; cancellation with full refund only in the event of thunder/lightning. This competitive program, for ages 5-18, is offered at Welch and Park Forest Community Pools, Monday-Friday, June 11-August 1. Summer Swim Team teaches teamwork, cooperation, and healthy competition. Both teams are members of the Central Pennsylvania Swim League (CPSL), which holds meets on weekday evenings. Swimmers must participate in two swim meets to be eligible to compete in the CPSL championship meet. Swimmers MUST be registered before they participate in any practices or meets.

Through a grant from National Recreation and Park Association, (NRPA), Fit and Strong is a physical, self-management program for older adults or persons with lower extremity osteoarthritis or lower body pain. The program helps improve the participant’s functional and physical activity. Classes combine flexibility, strength training, and aerobic walking with health education. Participants are to wear loose fitting clothes and sneakers. Classes will include one hour of gentle exercise and 1/2 hour of health education. Class materials, weights, and exercise bands are provided.

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION GENERAL • Most programs have limited enrollment. Registration is accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Registrations are processed in the order they are received at the CRPR office, and program/event fees must be paid at the time of registration. • How to read Program Fees: Resident Fee (R): For residents of State College Borough & the Twps. of College, Ferguson, Harris & Patton. Nonresident Fee (NR): For residents of all other municipalities. • No registrations or payments can be accepted by CRPR instructors, unless specific info. is provided within a program description. • CRPR reserves the right to adjust program meeting schedules, pending weather conditions and facility availability. REFUNDS • If a refund request is made at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of the program / camp week, a full refund (less a $5 processing fee) is provided for the program. • If a refund request is due to injury or illness after a program starts, a prorated refund is provided (a doctor’s excuse may be required). • If a program or class is canceled, a prorated refund or credit is provided.
