Welcome to Centre Region Parks & Recreation It’s almost time for sweatshirts, campfires, hot chocolate with marshmallows, and fall sports! Once again, CRPR Staff worked hard to put together another great season of programming. Don’t waste any time checking out all of your returning favorites and NEW programs coming up this season. If it’s time to learn that favorite craft or you want to ease into a new fitness routine, we have something for you. Missed a program this past Spring or Summer, check out the guide because your favorite may be back! Be sure to mark your calendar for the “So Long Summer Shindig” at the end of August; help us say goodbye to Summer and welcome Fall with open arms! Enjoy the pools while they remain open through Labor Day, and be sure take advantage of the great Fall weather and visit a park that may be new-to-you! Many folks discovered some great new parks during our Park Picture Pursuit Scavenger Hunt this Summer. If ever you have program ideas or suggestions for an event or activity, do not hesitate to contact us! Youth Instructional Classes Muck-n-Mess

YOUTH INSRUCTIONAL CLASSES

We’re diving right in to the squishy, splashy, mucky, and messy projects that every child loves. These activities embrace a child’s delight in tactile experiences of finger (and toe!) painting, paper mache, slime making, plus seasonal favorites like pumpkin painting. L’il Striders

Through a grant from Strider Balance Bikes, CRPR is thrilled to offer again this learn-to-ride class for children ages 3-5 years old. This class teaches kids how to ride on two wheels. The curriculum is built around five 45-minute sessions of learning, fun, socialization, and instruction sure to ignite a passion for riding. Upon completion of the course, children will have the balance and bike handling skills to be on their way to riding on two wheels. Have fun while learning the basics of modern square dancing. It is great physical and mental exercise. No experience necessary! Dance classes instructed by Carter and Ruby Ackerman

How to Pick a Bike Class

Shopping for a bike can be an intimidating process, especially if you’re not sure what to buy, where to buy it, or how much it should cost. This session is full of valuable information to help you navigate the bike-buying process. We’ll go over different bike types and their uses, how much you can expect to spend, bike storage tips, and more. You’ll be shopping with confidence before you know it.

Bicycle Street Skills Course

Class is designed for participants of all abilities who want to increase their comfort and confidence when cycling on city streets. Classroom work includes learning the rules of the road including where to ride, basic traffic principles, how to safely change lanes, how to avoid common road hazards, and more. Then participants move outside to work with a certified instructor on skill drills in a traffic-free environment to employ the strategies just learned in a short open-road session. Bike Maintenance 101

If you are new to cycling or just want to learn more about caring for your bike, then this class is for you! Learn how to fix flats, clean and lube a chain, go over maintenance tips and answer mechanical questions. These skills will save you time, money and give you a much better understanding, and appreciation, of your bike. If time permits we will cover additional topics. Light refreshments will be provided by Freeze Thaw. No need to bring your bike to this educational class.

Do you want to start biking or feel more confident navigating local routes? Join us and learn more about the Centre Region’s bike paths/routes, PA and local laws, how to pick a bike, and other biking-around-town tips. Get answers to your bikerelated questions from regional planning staff and CentreBike members. Attendees will receive a copy of the PA Bicycle Driver’s Manual and an awesome bike pin. 14th Annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day Details

Although this event is geared toward beginners, your child should be adequately able and prepared to ride on a dirt trail surface. Helmets are required for all participants. Please bring water, an appropriate bike for trail riding, closed-toe comfortable riding shoes, and weather appropriate clothing. Parent or guardian must be on-site and is encouraged to ride with the group.

ALL AGES INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES

State College is a great place to mountain bike and this is the perfect class for those who want to learn more about the basics of riding, where to ride, and the Nittany Mountain Biking Association (NMBA). This introductory clinic will cover topics to get you riding and enjoying off-road trails. Skills covered will include: braking, bike/body position, cornering, navigating obstacles on trails, basic bike maintenance/repair, and trail etiquette. After the instructional portion of the class, there will be an hour-long group ride. If you plan on riding you must bring a bike, helmet, and water.

Special Events PAWS-A-POOL-OOZA

SPECIAL EVENTS

The new and improved PAWS-A-POOL-OOZA returns on Sunday, September 10, for all our local dog owners! We have a new format this year, new activities, a new cause, and much more! This year’s event will benefit Pets Come First and they will be on-site during the day! NEW schedule: 10:00-11:30am - Dogs under 40 lbs. (Littles) 12:00-1:30pm - Dogs 40 lbs. and over (Bigs) OTHER ACTIVITIES THIS YEAR: • Dustin Miller, Penn State University, and his K-9, Rudie Explosive Detection Demos at 11:00am and 1:00pm. Rudie is a Belgian Malinois who specializes in explosives detection. Take a break from swim time and watch Rudie work during this demo! If your dog is NOT swimming, you will need to have your dog leashed and under control at the demo. • The Bone Bar and Boutique and Rosie’s Clothes will be vendors set-up at the pool for your shopping delight! Pick out that gourmet, all-natural treat or find a cute outfit for your pooch! • PAWStastic Toys will be made on-site! These are easy, homemade dog toys that you’ll be able to take-home with you! • Raffle for a basket full of doggie goodies, one for the small dogs and one for the large dogs!

In addition, you can bring donations for Pets Come First. They are looking for: scoopable cat litter, regular cat litter, 9 Lives cat food, 9 Lives dry kitten food, Purina One dry dog food, 12% protein horse feed, red mineral salt blocks, paper towels, bleach, light bulbs and spot lights, gas cards, gift cards to local stores (Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply), 13-gallon garbage bags, large heavy duty garbage bags, printer/copier paper, industrial mops and brooms, and large clear plastic storage bins. FEES: $5/dog; human handlers are FREE but must be 18 yrs. or over.* *Dogs must remain ON-LEASH when not in pool; this is especially important this year since there will be vendors and demos. All owners must sign waiver and show proof of rabies vaccination and current dog license before entry. Only dogs are permitted in the pool. Lifeguards will be on-duty to provide any necessary assistance. Event is held rain or shine, but we will cancel for thunder.

Special Events continued 2nd Annual Old Bag Auction

Build Your Own Gingerbread Houses

Join us for this holiday tradition, except with less mess and less stress! Gingerbread houses are pre-baked and ready to go, and decorating supplies are included. All you need to do is bring your creativity and holiday cheer! Join us on Saturday, December 9 from10:00 AM-12:00 PM. All Ages Disc Golf Clinic

Join us at Circleville Park on Sunday, Sept. 17, from 2:00-5:00 PM and learn to throw like the pros! This is a great opportunity to check out Disc Golf: how to play, different throwing types, rules of the game, and try out some of the best plastic out there! We’ll meet at the Circleville Disc Golf Course, at the pavilion next to Hole #1, and our amateur and pro players will teach you some basic skills; once you’ve got a grip on the discs, we’ll practice some mid- and long-distance throws, and have you try your hand at putting. Once we’ve done that, we’ll play a few holes where you can ask questions of the instructors and see how they approach each hole. Don’t worry, we’ll supply everything! This clinic is for all ages, and we recommend the minimum age to be 6 yrs. Our amateur and pro players will be from the Centre County Disc Golf Association. This event is rain or shine unless there are thunderstorms in the area. Otherwise, just come dressed for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes. Please bring plenty of water as well! Youth Sports Introduction to Quickstart Tennis

This instructional program is designed for youngsters who are interested in learning the game of tennis. Age-appropriate drills and games are used to improve hand-eye coordination, as well as very basic tennis skills. All equipment is provided, although players may bring their own racket. Quickstart Tennis is played on a smaller court and with a lower net to help build skills. Youngsters would progress to Beginner Level tennis once they have successfully completed the Quickstart Tennis program. All classes are held at Spring Creek Park’s Tennis Courts.

Start Smart Baseball

Start Smart Baseball is a developmentally-appropriate introductory baseball program for parents and children who are 3-5 years. Start Smart Basketball

Start Smart Basketball teaches children (ages 5-7) the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with a parent. The program focuses on teaching children and parents skills in dribbling/ball handling, passing/catching, shooting and running/agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. CRPR, in cooperation with Letermans, invites you to grab some friends and join us for the Fall season of Bocce! Leagues are set-up for competitive play, but the overall goal is enjoyable participation for all. No equipment is necessary. Adult Sports and Leagues continued Fall Tennis League

This informal tennis league is designed to provide competitive play for people with busy schedules. You will receive a season schedule, and you will have one week to play each match. Matches can be played at any of the tennis courts in the CRPR parks on the day/time that works best for the match players. You will be provided options for reporting scores regularly. Everyone will be matched up with someone with similar ability.

Please use your computerized rating through the USTA; if you are self-rating, please use the guidelines found here, National Tennis Rating Guidelines, to help you choose the best division.

For doubles teams, each member of the team needs to register as an individual. If you don’t have a partner, please use the category “require partner” when registering and CRPR will match you if possible. This reality based MMA program is based around the techniques of Dog Brothers Martial Arts. Students learn to use sticks and other various tools as a weapon, along with learning knife defense and other MMA techniques. Wetland Senses Program Grades Preschool-K This program encourages children to fully experience the marsh by using their senses while learning and discovering. Four senses (no tasting) will be incorporated into fun, educational activities to get children exploring, touching, viewing, playing games, and more in a hands-on experiential way. This program is designed for Pre-school or Kindergarten groups, but can be adapted to first and second grade. This program may introduce topics in the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology categories: 4.1, 4.6 Integrated Pest Management Program Grades 3-8 This program is designed to introduce elementary school students to the concepts of Integrated Pest Management. Students will understand different types of pests and identify different methods to control specific pests. Students will also explore Millbrook Marsh, learn about the marsh as a natural filter, and understand how invasive species impact this precious ecosystem. This program is for third graders or higher. This program may introduce topics in the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology categories: 4.1, 4.5, 4.6 Insect Safari Grades Preschool-5 This program guides children to explore the Marsh on an insect search and offers activities that teach about bug basics, special adaptations, insect eyes, and more about the bug world! The Marsh Exploration Program Grades 1-12 Why are wetlands so important? What is a watershed? Learn about the importance of wetlands and how they are natural filters. Explore the marsh and understand this important habitat, watersheds, and the area where we live. Participants will explore the marsh, learn about wetlands and their importance, study the stream and its creatures, understand the history of the area, and much more! (Activities may vary based on age.) This program may introduce topics in the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology categories: 4.1, 4.5, 4.6, & 4.7. (Wear water boots or shoes!)

Beginning Birdwatching Grades 1-5 Learn about birds and their characteristics while exploring Millbrook Marsh. Also, begin learning the art of birdwatching with our pre-set course, before practicing on live birds! A great way to start out and begin learning about local birds.

Scouting Programs

Participants will complete activities and explorations specifically designed for scout groups that meet all or some of the requirements for a badge or try-it, while exploring Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with a naturalist. Cultivating Edible Mushrooms

Join us for a mushroom cultivation workshop! Local farmer’s market grower, Scott Baylets, will conduct an interactive presentation on how to grow common cultivated mushrooms. Participants will construct their own “synthetic log” Oyster mushroom bag. You’ll take home knowledge and a counter-top kit which will weigh about 10 pounds, with an anticipated 3-5 pounds of fruiting Elm Oysters a month later. Wear comfortable clothing that is easily washable. All supplies are provided.

State College Area Municipal Band Concerts

This group’s repertoire ranges from pops to standard band classics, including overtures, transcriptions and marches. The FREE concerts of this award-winning band are held in the Mount Nittany Middle School Auditorium, unless noted. Donations are gratefully accepted at the door. EVERYONE is welcome! IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION GENERAL • Most programs have limited enrollment. Registration is accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Registrations are processed in the order they are received at the CRPR office, and program/event fees must be paid at the time of registration. • How to read Program Fees: Resident Fee (R): For residents of State College Borough & the Twps. of College, Ferguson, Harris & Patton. Nonresident Fee (NR): For residents of all other municipalities. • No registrations or payments can be accepted by CRPR instructors, unless specific info. is provided within a program description. • CRPR reserves the right to adjust program meeting schedules, pending weather conditions and facility availability. REFUNDS • If a refund request is made at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of the program / camp week, a full refund (less a $5 processing fee) is provided for the program. • If a refund request is due to injury or illness after a program starts, a prorated refund is provided (a doctor’s excuse may be required). • If a program or class is canceled, a prorated refund or credit is provided.
