Foreword by Eleanor Fawcett I have always admired people who dive into art with all the fearless enthusiasm that comes with the purity of being an amateur, rather than a trained professional. The word amateur comes from the latin word lover ‘Amator’, so, to be an Amateur is love. To paint for love, solely out of love and enjoyment and unbound by commercial obligations or pressures which shackle the academic artist. This certainly seemed to be the case when I first saw JeF’s watercolours. After a full and successful career in a very highly esteemed profession doing confidential work (I shall say no more), he effortlessly took up painting like a fish takes to water. JeF and Li-Ann both live by the sea in Brittany and are both members of Sailing clubs. This adds a further dimension and further meaning to their paintings of boats and seascapes. 2020 - Watercolor on paper by JeF

They do not merely observe from the shore. They have plenty of first-hand, tangible experience of their subject matter. They are Amateurs, or rather ‘Amatores’; Lovers of Sailing and of Painting alike. The over-riding theme of both JeF and Li-Ann’s paintings, Breton boats and port-side scenes are like postcards. These postcards invite us to recall our holidays past, our childhoods, our memories and our nostalgia. Especially in a year where many of us have not been able to travel physically, they offer a joyous respite from our daily lives. Marine or Maritime art has rich tradition in art history especially from the 17th to the 19th century. The sea is a mysterious body that invites us to dream and look afar and beyond our present. The chosen medium of both artists, watercolour, a light and translucent medium by nature, literally offers a lighter interpretation than the dark and intense often dramatic oil paintings of ships at sea from classics such as Rembrandt or Vernet. Far from the dark and scary stormy scenes, often depicted in oil by the Dutch Masters and the like, these paintings are light, and playful, including some pop references and a few illustrative cartoon-like pieces (Laurel and Hardy musicians, The Merry Bretons by Li-Ann, and The quintessential portside café by JeF) These pieces beyond depicting boats at sea also depict port-side daily life, activity and culture, the cafe with its quotidian regulars, the traditional dress, emotional and fond farewells. As mentioned, they even include some still life again another canonical tradition of art history, but being sure to anchor it to their locality by painting produce that is emblematic of Paimpol and its agriculture. So, without further ado, nothing remains but to invite you to revel in this joyous body of works and to dream in watercolour. Ellie Fawcett

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
The artists who have painted on the theme of the sea are innumerable. Some are famous. But our interest has focused on the world of the sea as seen by two amateur and anonymous watercolorists: JeF and Li-Ann. Who are they? Both members of a sailing association (The ROOF) in Paimpol in Northern Brittany, they are involved in watercolors, especially during winter periods when water activities are slowed down. For lovers of the sea endowed with a certain artistic sensibility, painting is indeed an outlet for the desire of escape and dream, thanks to the limitless possibilities of interpretation that it offers. Why watercolor? It is certainly a quick and easy implementation, but.. The technique is complex: the white pigment does not exist (it is the paper medium that is white), And it has a sometimes-unpredictable character, with random results, especially in the so-called "wet" technique. So you have to develop a real strategy before you start putting the brush on the paper... which is of great intellectual interest. The sea has an immense evocative power. It allows us to travel beyond the horizons as passengers of the great ocean Liners of the 20th Century, to imagine the great sailboats that went around the world rounding the Cape Horn, to experience the harsh fishing trips of the Paimpolais who went on fishing for cod in Iceland at the beginning of the 20th century (and often did not return!); but the sea is also, more prosaically, the fisherman and his fishing boat crammed with fishing lines and nets, the small boat stranded on the shore, the atmosphere of the ports and of course sailors’ bistros where, precisely, one can evoke the memories (preferably heroic) of sailing. That's why JeF and Li-Ann, like many other equally anonymous painters, put the sea at the center of their inspiration. They opened their Art portfolio cases full of welcoming watercolors that we bring you in this “Exhibition". We also slipped a few very “Paimpolish” paintings. For let's not forget, Paimpol also has a well-anchored activity (it is the case to say!) in agriculture: Cauliflowers, artichokes, and beans (the famous "cocos" of Paimpol) blithely compete with seafood. Dream well while enjoying the watercolors of JeF and Li-Ann!
