HBA Annua T

he HBA Membership met for the Annual Meeting and SPIKE Night on Thursday, October 17 at the new Stone River restaurant in West Columbia. The evening began with cocktails in the restaurant’s picturesque spaces along the Congaree River and cityscape views. We then had dinner and started the meeting. The annual meeting is always a busy one as we have a speaker, hold elections for next year’s board of directors and council leadership and celebrate those members who bring in new members, a.k.a. SPIKES. And that’s just what we did at this meeting. First, the SPIKES. Many members helped spread the word about HBA Membership this year and brought new members into the group. Those members were treated to a special

8

dinner during the meeting. In honor of our member with the most SPIKE Club credits to his name, we named the annual SPIKE of the Year award after him. The award will henceforth be called the Frank D. Clark SPIKE of the Year Award. This award is given to the member who brings in the most new members that year, and the 2013 recipient is none other than HBA President David Clark, son of Frank D. Clark. Speaking of new members, we had many of them at the meeting. Thanks to all of them for showing up and we look forward to seeing them at many more meetings and events in 2014! James Graves represented the HBA of South Carolina’s Certified Master Builder Program at the meeting in order

al Meeting to present David Watkins, CAPS, Master CGP, GMB, of GreenSense Homes with his Certified Master Builder certificate. Congratulations to David Watkins on this achievement! He can now add CMB to his list of professional designations. Our speaker for the evening was Colonel Michael E. Manning, commander of the 169th Fighter Wing, South Carolina Air National Guard, McEntire Joint National Guard Base. He gave a very interesting talk about what the SCANG does, where the 169 th Fighter Wing has been and how the base operates. We thank him for sharing his time with us.

Finally, we held elections for the HBA Board of Directors (see page 16), the Columbia Remodelers council (see page 5), and the HBA Green Building Council (see page 6). Please see the calendar of events on page 18 to see when our General Membership Meetings are planned for 2014. Members may attend at no charge with reservations in advance. Meeting Sponsored By:

The HBA Holiday Ball was held on Friday, December 20th at the Downtown Columbia Marriott this year. The newly-renovated space was the perfect site for the redesigned annual event. Instead of a room full of round tables and chairs, plated dinner, and a long program, we made it more of a party with various food stations and a much shorter program. Thanks to everyone who attended and, of course, to our sponsors.

Gordon A. Harrison Award The Gordon A. Harrison Award was named in honor of 1973 President and Builder Member of the Year Gordon Harrison. He passed away in 1974 and the award was first given in 1977. Recipients are Builder Members who project an image that adds to the stature of the association, exemplifies standards promoted by the association, improve the building industry, and who have unquestionable character and integrity. The 2013 Gordon A. Harrison Award winner is Richard N. Sendler of Sendler Construction. Prior to his death last year, Richard was involved in the HBA for many years, most actively in the role of government relations and political action. No elected official was spared the direct and forthright questioning that only Richard could deliver. If there was an issue that threatened to make building homes more difficult or costly, Richard Sendler could be counted on to take the home builder’s message to the elected officials to keep housing safe and affordable.

Letter from the Chairman

L

ooking back over 2013, I have to say that I am truly inspired by the progress we have made and extremely excited about what the future holds. I think you would all agree, it’s been a tough couple of years in our business; whether you are a builder, a mortgage broker, a vendor or a real estate agent, the economy has affected us all.

The Sales & Marketing Council of Columbia (SMC) encourages and maintains a high quality of sales and marketing expertise through educational programs, networking opportunities and recognition for its members.

understand the importance of every council that is a part of the HBA. As I begin to try to fill the shoes of the wonderful chairs of the past, let me say that I am encouraged and full of anticipation as to what the new year will bring. Challenges? Sure, we will always have them! Opportunities? You can count on it!

We’ve been fortunate in the SMC and the HBA to rally through those times with a strong core of membership and a strong leadership team.

If there is one thing I know, whether presented with a challenge or an opportunity, we are better as a group than individually! So let’s join together and make it a wonderfully successful 2014!

From my personal perspective, I’ve seen first hand in these more challenging times, the value of our membership. Our members are here to stay and
