BUS TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

AssociationNews

BIA of Central SC members made their annual trip to our nation’s Capital in June of this year. They had the opportunity to meet with our members of Congress in their Washington offices and talk about key issues facing the building industry and their businesses. Special thanks to the many sponsors and participants on the trip. Keep an eye out for our next trip to Washington. Whether you’ve been there before or not, this is a great trip and a very important opportunity to speak directly with our elected representatives about issues they may not know about.

BIA ANNUAL MEETING

The BIA Annual Meeting was held Tuesday, October 10 at the Music Farm in downtown Columbia. Nearly 200 members and guests filled the venue and enjoyed networking, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. We took a little time to recognize new members, give some SPIKE Awards and hold elections for councils and the BIA Board of Directors. We also finished out the Fall Membership Drive which took place the month leading up to the event. Congratulations to Mike Satterfield for sponsoring the most new members in the drive. Congratulations also to Jennifer Cannon who won the drawing for a trip for two to Greenville! The winning team will be treated to a cocktail party at 1801 Grille in Columbia in November. Thanks to everyone who participated in the drive, and keep bringing in those new members! Annual Meeting sponsors:

SPIKE NIGHT While we recognized our new member recruiters, a.k.a. SPIKEs, during the Annual Meeting at the Music Farm, we wanted to treat them to a special event for their efforts in growing the association. All SPIKEs were invited to a special reception at The Tin Roof following the Annual Meeting. There, SPIKEs were treated to live entertainment, cocktails and even more networking and fun with fellow members.

COLUMBIA REMODELERS AWARDS

AssociationNews

In August, the Remodelers Council awarded the 16th installment of the Columbia Remodelers Awards, or CRAs. This program recognizes the craftsmanship and skill demonstrated by members of the Remodelers Council on local projects from the previous 12 months. We received a dozen fantastic entries and sent judges out to see which ones would come away with the coveted trophies. While the decisions are never easy, the judges get to see a wide variety of remodeling techniques, new products and problem solving while meeting some very satisfied homeowners. A big thank you to all of the participants this year and to their homeowners for allowing us entry to their homes. Special thanks to Columbia Metropolitan Magazine for sponsoring these awards. They have been a great partner for the lifetime of these awards.

REMODELERS COUNCIL

The Remodelers Council had a busy summer this year. We enjoyed an On-site Experience with the High Performance Building Council in June to a home built by Paradime Construction, Inc. (see page 14). In July we had a Quarterly Meeting at The Venue on Main. Our guests for the meeting were building inspectors from the City of Columbia, Richland County and Lexington County. We thank all three for their time and open conversation about how we all work together to build and remodel homes. In August we visited the Irmo location of Capital Kitchen & Bath for a Remodelers After Hours event. Members got to see their showroom and learn more about what the company has to offer. Thanks to Kristen and Gerald Meetze and the entire staff for a great evening. We also announced the winners of the 16th annual Columbia Remodelers Awards (CRAs). We were pleased to have a dozen entries in the program this year, and we awarded eight trophies. See page 9 in this magazine for the winners. See our website at BIAofCentralSC.com to see before and after photos on every entry in the program. Finally, in September, we held another Quarterly Meeting at The Venue on Main. This meeting featured Lt. Ron Felder from the City of Columbia Police Department and a talk about personal safety at home and at work. The Remodelers Council meets just about every month for education and networking. If you’re involved with remodeling in any way, we’d love to have you join the council. Membership is only $95/year for BIA of Central SC members or their staff members. 12 www.BIAofCentralSC.com

High Performance Building Council

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL Members of the High Performance Building Council (HPBC) have been meeting throughout the year for networking and education on a variety of topics. In June, we held a joint meeting with the Remodelers Council at a home built by Paradime Construction. The home is unique in that it was the first home built to both the Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home Program and the Universal Living certification program. Members of both councils enjoyed learning more about each program by going through the home and seeing the construction techniques in real life. In July, we met at Thirsty Fellow for a Power Lunch. Members enjoyed lunch and talking with each other in a relaxed atmosphere. Thanks to BIA of Central SC Executive Director Earl McLeod and HBA of SC Executive Director Mark Nix for joining the group and talking about current issues. Lastly, HPBC members met in September at The Venue on Main. The dinner meeting featured Ryan Miller of the SC Building Performance Association. Ryan spoke to us about his organization’s plan to collect data on energy rated and certified homes in South Carolina and study it to see the actual value-benefits of high performance construction. Once this study is completed, the group plans to work with local Multiple Listing Services (MLS) to see if such data can be incorporated into their listings. If this can be done, the value of high performance homes can better be determined by agents, appraisers and buyers. Our council is working with SCBPA on this initiative and we will keep you updated on progress.
