50TH ANNUAL HOME & GARDEN SHOW The 50th annual Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show was held March 11 – 13, 2016 at the SC State Fairgrounds. The golden anniversary of the show brought some changes in layout to the show, but retained much of the energy and charm that has been built over all those years. Over 230 exhibitors filled the Cantey and Ellison buildings plus the new Goodman Building on the fairgrounds, plus outdoor space. The new building allowed organizers to keep the show in a compact area and not use the Moore and Ruff Buildings as in years past. That change alone made for a friendlier and easier to navigate show for our 13,000+ attendees. Special thanks to Clyde Nettles for sponsoring the show again this year. Thanks also to our many other sponsors, all of the exhibitors, the members who volunteered on the Home Shows Committee including our new Chairman Brian Arnold of Russell & Jeffcoat Real Estate, and the members who volunteered to help during the event. This show would not have made it this long without the support of the members of the BIA of Central SC. We look forward to the 51st annual Home & Garden show next March 10 – 13.

HOME SHOW BOOTH AWARDS

AssociationNews

At the beginning of each Home & Garden Show, the Chairman and committee members walk the show and visit every booth in search of those that exemplify the ideals of planning, design, creativity, craftsmanship and salesmanship. One display is chosen from each building and the outdoor area as Best Booth. One very special display is selected for the Chairman’s Award for Best in Show. Here are the results from this year…

Blue Max Materials of Columbia dressed up the outdoor area with a very nice hardscaped display complete with a towering fireplace.

WP Law built a gardening-themed growler station/bar display. The original concept and great execution won them the Goodman Building Award for Best Booth.

Hal Bowers of Bowers Landscaping and Irrigation took the Chairman’s Award for Best in Show this year for their beautiful display in the Goodman Building.

Southeastern Salvage filled 1,000 square feet of the Ellison Building with an outdoor area, kitchen and den display packed with plenty of product and helpful staff. Great Job!

In the adjoining Cantey Building, Midlands Storage Systems, LLC won the best booth award for their orderly garage display.

ADVOCACY IN ACTION Advocacy is defined as “a vocal supporter of any cause; one who pleads or speaks for another.” The Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina is the advocate for the home building, land development, commercial construction and remodeling industry. More often than not, advocacy takes place outside of the headlines; in meetings with elected officials and their staffs; attending Council Meetings and testifying at national, state and local agencies. BIA members and your staff are working round the clock on behalf of your business and livelihood. Members of the BIA of Central SC had two great opportunities to meet with elected officials in March of this year. First was Builder Day at the Capitol on March 1 and the second was the HBA of SC Bird Supper on March 15 at Seawell’s. Thanks to everyone who came out on those days and talked with their elected officials about issues important to our industry. Note that just hours after our meetings on March 1, the Road Improvements Bill that we were stressing the importance of passed. Advocacy works.

APRIL BIA MEMBERSHIP MEETING

High Performance Building Council

The Building Industry Association of Central SC held a membership meeting on Thursday, April 14 at Seawell’s. Over 120 members and guests were in attendance for networking, education and lunch. Before the meeting started, however, we held an education session on Social Media for Custom Builders. The session was presented by Builders Digital Experience (BDX). The membership meeting directly followed this presentation. We started the meeting by welcoming guests and new members. We were fortunate to have nine new members join us at this meeting. See all of the new members for February and March on page 16, and learn about our on-going Membership Drive on page 3. We heard from our sponsors, Allied Air Enterprises and Lowe’s ProServices and then we got to the topic of the meeting, The Value of Membership. As a member of the BIA of Central SC, you are also a member of the Home Builders Association of SC and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). We heard from Dave Ashley of NAHB who spoke to us about the many member benefits that come from the office in Washington, D.C. We also heard from many other members and affiliated individuals who could speak to the many benefits of membership first hand. Johnny Jeffcoat of Lexington County Council spoke to the legislative influence he has seen demonstrated by the association over many years. BIA President Eddie Yandle followed up that sentiment by talking about his experience on the Bus Trip to Washington and the influence we have during that trip. Former BIA President and longtime Codes Committee member Mike Lowman spoke to the benefit the Codes Committee provides to all builders in our area. Jim Powell, Executive Director of Home Works of America, Inc. spoke to the benefit the BIA brings to the community by charitable donations and helping work with local jurisdictions when help is needed. Chandler Coggeshall of Home Pest Control talked about being an involved member. At the end of the meeting we recognized BIA Member Sharon Czeresko of Palmetto Payroll Solutions for her recent achievement of becoming a SPIKE Club Member. Sharon recruited at least six new members to reach this level. Great job, Sharon! Our next General Membership Meeting will be held on June 16. Check mail, e-mail and our website for time, location and speaker information. Don’t forget to register if you plan to attend!

After Hours at KB Kitchen & Bath Thanks to the folks of KB Kitchen & Bath for hosting our March Remodelers After Hours. We had a great turnout for the event with over 30 members and guests. We had a great time networking with fellow members and seeing all of the great countertop surfaces and other items they have in their Lexington showroom. If you’re in the area, stop by and check them out. Our next After Hours will be on May 24 at Century Glass. We hope you can join us!

April Quarterly Meeting The Remodelers Council also met for a Quarterly Meeting in April. The meeting was sponsored by Kehoe Constructors, LLC and our speaker was Tim Kehoe. Tim spoke to the group about incorporating Universal Design in Remodeling. He showed examples of his work here in Columbia that demonstrates that type of construction. Thanks to Tim and the whole Kehoe Construction team for the sponsorship and presentation. Make plans to join us for a tour of The Wilson House in downtown Columbia this June 28.

Universal Living Certification Our new Universal Living Certification is up and running and we are just about to certify our first two homes in the new program. BIA Member Stan O’Brien of Paradime Construction, Inc. has two projects just about done. He has been working with program verifier Tim Kehoe of Kehoe Constructors, LLC and the process is nearing completion. The Universal Living Certification is available for use by any member of the BIA of Central SC. It is a checklist of various items to be incorporated into a home during construction. A third-party verifier will ensure that all selected items have been completed and then the home can be certified in the program. HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL Seeing Green in March The High Performance Building Council met on March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day – for a general membership meeting. We celebrated the occasion with Irish food and drinks, and enjoying the company of fellow members. And as it’s the greenest day of the year, we had a talk about water and energy conservation.

High Performance Building Council

BIA Members from Mr. Rooter talked to us about the many changes in Tankless Water Heating. Not only were they our meeting speakers, they also sponsored the meeting…. Thanks! Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 26. Carrier Enterprises will be our sponsor and speaker. The topic is HVAC Tools of the Trade.

CHiP Home Program The Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home Program is in its fifth year and we certified 2,140 homes in the program. Thanks to our builder partners Great Southern Homes, Essex Homes and Sovereign Homes for their continued participation and support. The CHiP Home Program is based on the National Green Building Standard™ and is administered through the BIA of Central SC office and our High Performance Building Council. The program is designed so that any builder can use it to build high-performance homes. Plus, our certification rates are the least expensive you can find… as low as $25/house! Learn how to build to CHiP at www.CHiPHomeProgram.com or contact Bin Wilcenski at the BIA Office.

Corrections The 2016 Membership Directory went out earlier this year and we found a few items that need to be corrected. Please make a note: T C M & Associates, Inc. (Bobby Taylor) is a Counter Top company, not Real Estate. Site Layouts (Harry Walsh) is a Planning Consultant, not Civil Engineering & Surveying. He’s no longer with Civil Engineering of Columbia.

Bring in New Members for chances to win cash and prizes President Eddie Yandle and the BIA Board of Directors are on a mission to reach 1,000 members by the end of the year. But, they need your help to reach this goal. To help motivate you to find potential members and bring them into the group, they have started a couple contests (see below). A big “Thank You” to Gary Pickren of Blair Cato Pickren Casterline, LLC. He brought in the most new members at the beginning of the year (15!) and was awarded $500 cash. He then turned it back in and added another $250 (matched by Mike Satterfield to fund the contests listed below. We certainly appreciate your recruitment efforts and commitment to grow the membership of the BIA of Central SC! Membership Contests: 1. For every new member you recruit between now and October 11, you’ll be entered in a drawing for a Caribbean cruise for two. (Get 1 new member, get 1 entry. Get 5 new members, get 5 entries, and so on.) 2. Recruit a new member between now and June 15 for a chance to win $250 cash. New Members joining by June 15 will also be eligible to win $250 cash. 3. The member who brings in the most new members by June 15 will win $500 cash. “New Members” are defined as Builders, Associates or Affiliates. Dues must be paid by dates noted in order to be counted for that contest. See flyer on page 3 for more information. Contact the BIA Staff if you need membership applications or other recruitment materials. www.BIAofCentralSC.com 17
