HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER COLUMBIA NAME CHANGE
F
or more than 50 years, the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia has helped foster the growth and evolution of the local building industry. Originally founded to bring together people from all phases of the building industry to represent their business interests and to promote programs, policies and education for housing consumers to obtain safe and affordable housing. Over the years, the association has evolved to become an impressive voice in the local and regional communities in regard to advocacy and representing the interest of its wide variety of members. The heritage of the HBA, the tradition of its long standing events and its impact on the community are highly valued among our leadership and membership. To better represent its diverse membership and to open the doors for increasing our voice, the association name is changing. The Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia’s name will change to the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina or the BIA. The decision to change the name of an organization of this size and heritage was certainly not made hastily. We did our homework, asked a lot of questions, talked with other building associations and had discussions with others outside of this association. In years past, we saw the proliferation of different associations pop up all over – different
building associations, splintered chambers, small business networks - all of which put a drain on our membership. With the most recent downturn in the economy, we – along with every other association had a loss in membership, organizations across the nation and SC have had to lay people off, sell buildings, cut expenses and still have continued to struggled. Additionally, the lines have been blurred with commercial and residential – especially as zoning is pushing for more live/work spaces and as our community has exploded. This change puts us in a position of leadership in our industry. We continue to fight for our industry and have demonstrated success. By assuming leadership in the entire building industry, we can more effectively drive the discussion on issues of importance to residential builders and increase our impact by affiliating with other groups that build to create a larger mass. We believe that builders and developers in both residential and commercial industries as well as in remodeling, all share similar issues and are challenged with so many of the same issues. By defining ourselves as representing the entire building community in Central SC, we are saying to those decision makers – This is who we represent. We are staking our claim. Build it and they will come.

TUTTLE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL SOUTH CAROLINA Serving as officers of the BIA are Eddie Yandle of Executive Construction as Vice President; Jennifer Harding of Russell & Jeffcoat Real Estate as Associates Vice President; Bart Bartlett of Bartlett and Davis Construction, LLC. & Bartlett Law Firm/Collaborative Law Center as Treasurer; and Clint Galloway of Galloway Family Homes as Secretary. In addition, the membership elected two Associates Directors and two Builder Directors to the board each for two-year terms. The Associate Directors are Eddie Wilder of ERA Wilder Realty, and

avid Tuttle of Lake Carolina Development, Inc. was elected as 2015 President of the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA) at the Annual Meeting of the Membership held October 16, 2014. He will assume the duties of President in January 2015. Tuttle was born in Hickory, North Carolina but relocated to Columbia with his family in his youth. He graduated from Irmo High School and then attended the University of South Carolina where he attained degrees in Business and Real Estate/Finance. In 1991 he formed his own construction company, Tuttle Construction, LLC. Currently, Tuttle is President of Lake Carolina Development, Inc., a job he’s had since 2004. Tuttle joined the then Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia in 2008 where he joined the Land Development Council and Sales & Marketing Council, participated in the Parade of Homes and TOUR OF HOMES, and has served on the Board of Directors. Tuttle is a member of the Richland County Planning Commission and Urban Land Institute. He has two sons, Charles, 11, and Gray, 7, with whom he enjoys playing golf and other sports. He is also recently married to Julie Jones Tuttle.

Eddie Yandle Named Residential Builder Member of the Year by the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia
C
Each year the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia (HBAGC) holds its annual Holiday Ball in Columbia. It’s an evening of fun and celebration, and recognition of those who have helped the home building industry throughout the year. Prior to the Holiday Ball, the HBAGC membership votes for their choice of nominees for the Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year and the Associate Member of the Year Award.

The Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year is Eddie Yandle, owner and CEO of Executive Construction Homes, LLC located in Columbia, S.C. Starting with their first home in 1989, Eddie and his wife, Shanna, work together in running a growing and successful company in the Midlands area. Together they are active in numerous charities and outreach events while also raising two children. The Yandles’ and Executive Construction Homes’ are very active in the local community. Taking special efforts to employ local vendors and suppliers in the Midlands is very important to Eddie Yandle. “Keeping our economy strong begins at home,” says Yandle, who supports all initiatives to keep the home-building industry strong. Eddie serves on the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia’s Board of Directors as Treasurer, and is also the District 2 Vice President of the Home Builders Association of South Carolina. Bringing innovative ideas, custom details, and value to consumers is a goal for this community oriented homebuilder. As one of the first to bring multi-generation floorplans to the Midlands area in 2013, Yandle also is one of the select groups of professionals nationwide to earn the Certified Green Professional (CGP) educational designation awarded by NAHB. This identifies him as an Owner/Home-builder with the skills and the best strategies for incorporating green building principles into new home and remodeling projects. In 2012, Yandle met all the requirements for membership and has been voted by the Master Builder Committee to be accepted as a Certified Master Builder of South Carolina (CMB). Executive Construction Homes is also multi award-winning builder
recognized by the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia. The HBA Associate Member of the Year is Stan Beckley of Stock Building Supply. Stan has been a member of the HBA since 1995 and serves as chairman of the Construction Workforce Training Task Force which works to bring new talent into the building industry and help alleviate the problem of skilled labor shortages. He is a very active member of the association. He attends nearly every HBA meeting and event throughout the year and represents the association in an outstanding manner in the business community and devotes tireless service to the improvement of the association. Mark Hood of Hood Construction, Inc. was named Commercial Contractor of the Year. Mark began his career as an Civil Engineering major at The Citadel, which broadened into over three decades tenure in the commercial construction industry. Founding his own company in 1986, his business philosophies are best displayed by his focus on strategic analysis of the methods and means of the construction and project management process. Mark is an active member of the Carolinas AGC, serving as 2011 Executive Board Chairman. Numerous community affiliations include positions on the Board of Directors for Citizens For Sound Conservation, The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Hammond School Board of Directors, and Board Chairman of the Oliver Gospel Mission. Mark and his wife Susan are long-time members of Shandon Baptist Church, where he currently serves as Deacon, Sunday School Dept. Director, and Personnel & Building Committee member. The HBA Corporate Member of the Year is Ameris Bank. Ameris has provided Financial support of the Home Builders Association; Use of company resources toward the betterment of the Association and has represented the association in an outstanding manner The Richard N. Sendler Award was named in honor of 1992 Association President and Builder Member of the Year Richard N. Sendler. He passed away in 2013 and the award was first given in 1977. Recipients are Builder Members who project an image that adds to the stature of the association, exemplifies standards promoted by the association, improve the building industry, and who have unquestionable character and integrity. The 2014 Richard N. Sendler Award winner is David Clark of Clark’s Building Solutions. The Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia would like to commend the award winners on their hard work throughout the year. They have not only served the home building industry well, but the Columbia community and the entire state have benefited from their dedication and work.

COLUMBIA HOUSING SUMMIT The Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina on December 17 hosted the Columbia Housing Summit at the Agape Conference Center in downtown Columbia. The event brought economists Dr. Joseph von Nessen of the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business, Bernard Helm of Market Opportunity Research Opportunities and Dr. David Crowe, Chief Economist of the National Association of Home Builders to the city for a comprehensive look at housing in 2014 and projections for the year to come.
Special thanks to BIA Member Andy White for emceeing the event and adding his own insights on the local building climate. Thanks also to Mayor Steve Benjamin for dropping by to talk about the City of Columbia’s efforts to boost the economy and taking questions from attendees. An announcement concerning the name change of the association immediately followed the summit. BIA Member Jennifer Harding made the announcement (see page 3).

BIG THURSDAY The annual BIG THURSDAY Oyster Roast was held Thursday, November 20 at The Coop near Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Over 170 members and guests attended the event and enjoyed some great steamed oysters, chili and drinks. We also had live music by the Mustache Brothers. 2014 HOLIDAY PARADE OF HOMES
T
he 2014 Holiday Parade of Homes was held December 6-14 at The Gates of Windermere in LongCreek Plantation in Northeast Columbia. The event featured three new homes in the $375,000 to $425,000 price range. The homes were furnished and decorated by local interior designers. A panel of judges met at the site before the gates opened to the public and walked through the homes to decide the winners of the Critics’ Choice Awards. Listed below are the official results. We also took votes from attendees throughout the event in the Peoples’ Choice Awards. Attendees were asked which home was their favorite and which had the best interior design. See the results below. HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL NEW YEAR, NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, NEW NAME High Performance Building Council
The Green Building Council is now the High Performance Building Council. The name change was discussed and voted on in 2014 and took effect in January 2015. The change was prompted by the HBA name and logo change and was an opportunity to better position the council for the future. Along with the new name, the council elected a new chairman and some new Executive Committee Members. The Remodelers council is comprised of over 75 members who are remodelers or are directly related to the local remodeling industry. The council holds quarterly meetings throughout the year as well as After Hours events at members’ places of business. SMC Annual Meeting The SMC held their annual meeting on December 4 at Embassy Suites. After recognition of our 2014 SMC Board of Directors, the election and installation of the 2015 SMC Executive Board members were held. A fun recap of 25 council achievements and facts for the past 25 years of the SMC was given by outgoing board members. Our featured speaker, Mary King, news reporter and anchor for WIS-TV, spoke on the importance of giving back to our community and pulled at the heartstrings of many as she shared some of her experiences with Families Helping Families. With a smaller crown than usual, members and guests rallied together with amazing giving spirit and raised over $1500 for Families Helping Families.

News from the HBA of SC
121st South Carolina General Assembly Convenes January 13th The first year of the 121st General Assembly will begin at Noon on Tuesday, January 13. While both chambers will begin with a clean slate, many of the pressing issues are holdovers from last year. These topics include: infrastructure funding for South Carolina’s crumbling roads (potentially including an increase in the gas tax), a major ethics reform package, and new criminal domestic violence laws. The Senate has already held committee meeting to discuss changes to the ethics statutes, and the House of Representatives has held similar meetings as well as formed a study committee to look into infrastructure funding. The first year of the session typically gets off to a slow start; however, many people around the Statehouse believe these issues could move quickly due to the fact they have already received a significant amount of work and attention. As the session continues, the HBASC will provide weekly updates on bills that will have positive and negative implications for the building and construction industry. These updates will include a complete list of the bills on the HBASC tracking list, as well as headlines from the Statehouse. As bill progress through the legislative process, the tracking list will be updated to reflect the most current action taken by the House and/or Senate. Additionally, we will provide information about the HBASC Bird Supper which serves as our annual legislative dinner.
