2018 HOME & GARDEN SHOW

AssociationNews

The 52nd annual Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show was held March 9 – 11, 2018 at the SC State Fairgrounds. The show featured over 200 exhibitors and vendors and drew about 9,000 attendees. In addition to the many exhibits, the show featured a 55+ Free Friday & Expo, First Responders Appreciation Day, Deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department featured on “Live PD” and other local first responders, a food court, home and garden seminars, kid’s activities with the West Columbia Jaycee’s and over $30,000 in prizes from exhibitors. Needless to say, it was quite a show. The show looked fantastic and reports from exhibitors and attendees are positive. We’d like to thank the many members, exhibitors and volunteers who helped to make the show happen and we are looking forward to the 53rd annual Home & Garden Show March 8 – 10, 2019.

APRIL LEGISLATIVE EVENTS One of the most important ways this association benefits the membership is political and legislative action. The BIA of Central SC is actively involved with local, state and national elected officials when it comes to matters involving the building and construction industry. In addition to our efforts, it is of utmost importance that members get involved and speak with their elected officials about important issues whenever possible. This can be a daunting task, but we offer events that make this as easy as possible. In April 2018, we held and participated in a three events to help members communicate with elected officials on all three levels of government. First up was the Builder/REALTOR Fish Fry held Thursday, April 12 at Pine Island on Lake Murray. This event was held in conjunction with the Central Carolina Association of Realtors™ (CCRA) and was held in honor of local public officials. Invitations were sent to members of Lexington and Richland County Councils and officials representing many other area towns and municipalities, including code officials. Attendees enjoyed food and beverages, beautiful views of the lake from Pine Island and live music from The Mustache Brothers. During the event, the BIA and CCRA presented three Champion of Housing Awards. Recipients were the Honorable Johnny Jeffcoat, Greg Pearce, and Seth Rose.

Thanks to everyone who attended the event, the staff of CCRA and the many sponsors who made the night possible.

Next, the HBA of South Carolina hosted the 47th annual Bird Supper on Tuesday, April 17 at The Governor’s Mansion in Columbia, SC. The event honors elected officials in the SC Legislature and gives members from across the state a good opportunity to speak with them in a relaxed atmosphere. Over 300 members and guests were in attendance. During the event, the HBA of SC presented the Hammer & Trowel Award to Gov. Henry McMaster. The Governor was in attendance and was very happy to receive the award saying, “This is a very important organization because nothing happens if nothing gets built.”

Thanks to the Governor for his hospitality in holding the event on the mansion grounds and for conducting a tour of the Governor’s Mansion for special guests. Thanks also to Your Electric Cooperatives for sponsoring this event and the many members who participated. And finally, the BIA put together the annual Bus Trip to Washington, D.C. from April 24-26 and took 18 members plus staff to the nation’s capital to meet with U.S. Senators and House Members in their offices. This is a whirlwind 3-day trip where members have the opportunity to meet with elected officials and talk about important issues facing our industry. Having constituents from their home state show up in their Washington offices makes a great impression on these officials.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL The High Performance Building Council (HPBC) was formed in 2007 by members of the Building Industry Association of Central SC (BIA) who were interested in learning more about sustainable residential construction and who had green products and services available in the marketplace. The HPBC is also the certifying agent of the Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home program. The program is designed so that any home builder can pick it up and build a third-party verified, high performance home. Learn more about the CHiP Home Program at www.CHiPHomeProgram.com or contact Bin Wilcenski at the BIA Office.

May Council Meeting with Nancy St. Hilaire

The High Performance Building Council was pleased to have Nancy St. Hilaire, 2018 President of the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET). She is well versed in the HERS and housing industry as she is the Operations Manager of the Charleston, South Carolina based HERS rating company and BIA of Central SC Member, Home Energy Group. The company is also a RESNET accredited Rating Provider and Rater Training Provider. Nancy also serves on the RESNET Standards Development Committee 900 – Quality Assurance and chaired the RESNET Board HERS Software Consistency Task Group.

April On-site Experience

Council members met on April 19 at a home under construction on Lake Murray. The home site is on a thin peninsula on the Lexington side of the lake and has building challenges including wind load and flood zone issues. Thanks to council member Trevor Michael of Piedmont Home Energy for the invitation to this home which his family is building.

BIA MARCH MEMBERSHIP MEETING On Tuesday, March 13, we held a General Membership Meeting at Seawell’s. The reason for the timing of the meeting was to accommodate the schedule of our guest speaker Dabo Swinney, Clemson University Head Football Coach. After leading his team to the NCAA Football Championship in 2017, Mr. Swinney is a tough speaker to book. Thanks to the meeting sponsors for making this possible.

Meeting Sponsors:

Over 330 members and their guests were in attendance for the meeting. Before our speaker took the lectern we welcomed new members to the association (see page 18). We also recognized those members who brought in new members this year, also known as SPIKE Club Members or SPIKEs. Thanks to Jennifer Cannon, Brandon Jeffcoat, Frank Mitchell and Gary Pickren for their efforts in new member recruitment.

Finally, 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty presented a $1,000 check to Eric Zimmerman of Zimmerman Homes of Distinction, LLC as he was the winner of a drawing held during the Home & Garden Show Member Preview the week prior. Eric immediately donated his winnings to the Building Industry Charitable Foundation. Thanks, Eric! Michael Nieri of Great Southern Homes introduced our guest speaker, Dabo Swinney. Mr. Swinney gave an hour long speech covering his experiences growing up, playing football, and coaching football and the lessons he learned along the way. It was an inspiring speech peppered with gospel passages, personal stories and some jokes.
