Fellow Members, We are up and running for 2016 and it’s already looking to be a great year. We have plenty of meetings and events planned and I hope you make time to participate. Being involved is the best way to get value out of your membership. By attending meetings, you get to know your fellow members, tell others about what you do, and make this association a stronger community. Putting on all of these meetings and events takes time and money to accomplish. Our staff works hard to plan, coordinate and man all of the functions, and members help fund it all with attendance, membership dues and sponsorships. Many events we do year after year would not be possible without our generous sponsors, and we are grateful for their help. YANDLE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL SOUTH CAROLINA Eddie Yandle of Executive Construction Homes, Inc. was elected as 2016 President of the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA), formerly the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia, at the Annual Meeting of the Membership held October 8, 2015. He will assume the duties of President in January 2016. Eddie and Shanna Yandle are the owners and founders of Executive Construction Homes. Eddie Yandle has been in the building industry his entire life. In 1985, he started working full time with his father, George (Butch) Yandle, in the underground utilities business. Eddie built his first personal home in 1989, soon after that he met his wife, Shanna. They quickly built four homes together and Eddie started the beginning of Executive Construction Homes, LLC. Eddie ensures from contract to after completion, the new home buyer is satisfied by being personally involved in every purchase.”. Eddie and Shanna are now raising two beautiful children. Continuing to be a responsible contributor to the community, Executive Construction Homes supports a variety of organizations, charities and takes a special effort to employ local vendors and suppliers in the Columbia area. “Keeping our economy strong begins at home”, says Yandle, who supports all initiatives to keep the home-building industry strong. In 2012, Eddie Yandle met all the requirements for membership and has been voted by the Master Builder Committee to be accepted as a Certified Master Builder of South Carolina (CMB). He is also one of the select groups of professionals nationwide to earn the Certified Green Professional (CGP) educational designation, identifying him as an Owner/Homebuilder with the skills and the best strategies for incorporating green building principles into new home and remodeling projects. 2015 HOLIDAY BALL AND BIA MEMBER AWARDS
T
he annual BIA Holiday Ball was held in December 2015 at the Columbia Marriott. Members and guests attended the black-tie optional event to celebrate the year that was and honor member achievements from 2015. We also had the pleasure of installing the 2016 HBA of SC President, Andy White, and our 2016 President, Eddie Yandle. Prior to the Holiday Ball, the BIACSC membership votes for their choice of nominees for the Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year and the Associate Member of the Year Award. The Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year is Michael Nieri, owner of Great Southern Homes with corporate offices in Irmo, S.C. A Clemson University graduate, Nieri has been building homes since 1993. In 2015, Great Southern Homes is expected to sell 600 homes in multiple markets in South Carolina. The company has 60 employees and many more trade contractors. He is an avid supporter of the BIA’s charitable efforts serving as President of the Building Industry Charitable Foundation and the driving force behind the construction of two cottages at Boys Farm in Newberry. He is married to Robyn Nieri and they have three children, Pennington, Maigan and Patrick. The BIA Associate Member of the Year is Brandon Jeffcoat of Clark’s Termite and Pest Control located in Irmo, S.C. Jeffcoat has been a member of the BIA since 2010. He is a very active member of the association serving as Chairman of the Ambassadors Club and on the BIA Board of Directors and the Sales and Marketing Council. He represents the association in an outstanding manner in the business community and devotes tireless service to the improvement of the association. David Tuttle of Lake Carolina Development was named Commercial Contractor of the Year. Tuttle served as President of the Building Industry Association this year and is also a member of the Richland County Planning Commission. The BIA Corporate Member of the Year is Allied Air Enterprises. Allied Air has provided financial support of the Building Industry Association and is a major contributor to the BIA’s flood relief efforts. Their on-going educational efforts and use of corporate assets to support the industry and association are very much appreciated. Piedmont Plumbers of Columbia LLC was named Trade Contractor of the Year. The company is recognized for their outstanding quality of work for BIA Members. Also, when called upon to help with relief efforts immediately following the flood, the entire company shut down and every employee joined together to help in a concerted effort. The Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina would like to commend the award winners on their hard work and dedication throughout the year. They have not only served the building industry well, but the Columbia community and the entire state have benefited from their dedication and work.

THE FIRST HOME & LIFESTYLE SHOW The BIA of Central SC presented the first Home & Lifestyle Show in January 2016. The show was held in conjunction with the long-running Palmetto Senior Show at the SC State Fairgrounds. Both shows were open on Thursday, January 14 and the Home & Lifestyle Show continued on Friday and Saturday. Fifty exhibitors filled the Cantey Building for the show. Despite some cold and rainy winter weather over the weekend, the show brought hundreds of visitors to the fairgrounds. Plans are already underway for the 2nd annual Home & Lifestyle Show in 2017.

50TH ANNUAL HOME & GARDEN SHOW The Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show celebrated its 50th year this March! The annual consumer show for new construction, remodeling, landscaping and general home improvement and products was held March 11 – 13, 2016 at the SC State Fairgrounds. The Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home Program is managed by the High Performance Building Council and is based on the 2012 National Green Building Standard™. It is designed to bring an ANSI-approved national green building program to our region without the high costs that come with similar programs. Members have been certifying to the CHiP Home Program for years, and we now have over 1,700 certified homes in the greater Columbia area. After Hours at the ReStore Members of the Remodelers council met in January at The ReStore in Lexington. The store is part of the Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity and helps raise funds used to build homes for those in need. ReStore inventory is donated by individuals and companies and ranges from electrical and plumbing supplies to furniture and décor. New items are constantly being added as sales are made, so every visit is a new experience. The ReStore also features a harvesting service where a team of ReStore workers will visit your remodeling project and take any sellable items made available. Old kitchen cabinets, sinks, doors or the like will be removed from the home in the demo phase and taken to the ReStore. The donation is tax-deductible for the homeowner. High Performance Building Council
FEBRUARY BIA MEETING The Membership of the Building Industry Association of Central SC met on Thursday, February 11 at Seawell’s. The meeting was sponsored by Allied Air Enterprises and Lowe’s ProServices. The afternoon started at 2:00 p.m. when members met for a class on the upcoming changes to the International Residential Code (IRC). The new code is expected to be implemented on July 1 of this year. The class was taught by Andy Barber and covered the changes from the current building code to the new one and the South Carolina modifications. In case you missed the class, we plan to offer it again later this year. The meeting got underway at 5:30 p.m. following the class. Over 170 members and guests were in attendance at the first meeting of the year. After cocktails and the buffet line subsided, we got underway. First up, we welcomed new members to the BIA (see next page). We recognized the instructor and students from the new NAHB Student Chapter. Thanks to CATE Instructor Mike Diaz and all of the future builders for attending the meeting. 2016 BIA President Eddie Yandle spoke about his goals for the new year, including the push to 1,000 members. He and Mike Satterfield are putting up $500 as an incentive for new member recruitment. See page 13 for details. He also recognized Jessica Chase, Jimmy Derrick and Cecil Brazell for reaching new levels in the SPIKE Club for their efforts in bringing in new members. Speaking of money, Dr. Joey Von Nessen spoke about the economy during the meeting. The Economics Ph.D. shared his forecast for South Carolina’s economy and his analysis as to where we are and where we’re headed. You’ll be happy to hear that his forecast for the building industry in 2016 is positive. Jimmy Derrick worked the crowd up and collected money for the Member Jackpot Drawing at the end of the meeting. After it was all said and done, Debi Warner walked away with over $200 in cash.
THE PUSH TO 1,000 MEMBERS IS ON BIA President Eddie Yandle announced his goal of pushing membership up to 1,000 members by the end of this year. We currently have around 790 members in the association. Yandle urges each member to find one person who would benefit from membership in the BIA and bring them in as a new member. If everyone gets just one new member this year, we’ll easily reach the goal of 1,000 members. As an incentive to help you find at least one new member, Eddie Yandle and Mike Satterfield are putting up $250 each for a $500 New Member Jackpot. The prize will go to the person who brings in the most new members by our next BIA General Membership Meeting on April 14*. The challenge has been issued and everyone is in the running.
