2017 BIA MEMBERS OF THE YEAR Members of the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA) voted for their choice of nominees for the Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year Award and the Associate Member of the Year Award. The Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year is Mike Satterfield of Great Southern Homes. Mike served as Treasurer of the BIA Board of Directors in 2017. He is an SC Builders PAC Gold Club member and a Dollar-a-Day Club member of NAHB’s Build PAC. Mike is the 2017 recipient of the Frank D. Clark SPIKE of the Year award having sponsored 17 new members, and was the captain of the winning team for the Fall Membership Drive. In addition, he led the task force responsible for renovation and repairs to the BIA Building.

The 2017 BIA Associate Member of the Year is Gary Pickren of Blair Cato Pickren Casterline, LLC. Gary has been a member of the association since 2011. The two-time Closing Attorney of the Year is also a licensed real estate broker and real estate agent instructor. He serves on the BIA Board of Directors and is a major sponsor of the annual BIA Bus Trip to Washington. He also served as the Membership Committee Chairman this year and was the individual winner of the Fall Membership Drive.

AssociationNews C.R. Jackson, Inc. was named Commercial Contractor of the Year. For 40 years, C.R. Jackson has served South Carolina as a leader in the site development and heavy highway industries. Founded in 1972, C.R. Jackson initially focused on land clearing, grading, and utilities in the Midlands area of the state. The scope of work grew to include asphalt manufacturing and asphalt paving. C.R. Jackson, Inc. is a strong advocate for safe roadways for South Carolina citizens and its visitors.

The BIA Corporate Member of the Year is Essex Homes. This award was created to recognize an outstanding member company of the association and takes into account a company’s contributions on the whole toward the betterment of our association, including financial support, use of company resources and representation of the association in an outstanding manner. Essex Homes is a previous recipient of this award in 2008 and 2011. With Corporate offices in Lexington, S.C., Essex Homes will build over 600 homes this year and was named as the 72nd largest Builder in the country by BUILDER, The Magazine of the National Association of Home Builders. They have contributed in various BIA meetings and events helping to make them successful, including the BIA Golf Classic, the TOUR OF HOMES and Sales & Marketing Council.

2017 BIA MEMBERS OF THE YEAR Michael P. Nieri, Owner and Founder of Great Southern Homes was named the Richard N. Sendler award winner. This award is voted on by past presidents and associate vice presidents of the Building Industry Association and the recipient must project a community image that adds stature to the association; exemplify standards promoted and supported by the association; institute innovative and creative ideas that have improved the housing industry and have unquestionable character and integrity. Michael has been a Builder Member of the BIA since 2001. In that time, he has served on the BIA Board of Directors and the Building Industry Charitable Foundation Board of Trustees, of which he currently serves as President. He also served as Chairman of the BIA Golf Classic numerous years, and the event has consistently raised more money for the Foundation’s Scholarship Program than the previous year. In addition, he is a major contributor to the Charitable Foundation, and lead the building effort of two cabins at Boy’s Farm in Newberry.

TABLE TOP NIGHT – LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

The first General Membership Meeting of the year was Table Top Night on January 25. Over 20 BIA Members set up displays at The Oaks in Columbia for the event. Over 150 other members attended the Mardi Gras themed event to network with each other and learn more about those companies on display. Congratulations to Century Glass on winning the booth decorating competition. There were some really great decorations and costumes from exhibitors, but the judges selected Century Glass as the winner. In addition to the fulfillment of victory, they won a refund for their Table Top fee. 8 www.BIAofCentralSC.com

REMODELERS COUNCIL The Remodelers Council is a group made up of members who specialize in remodeling and associated trades. Formed in 1986, the council has many long-time members and new members alike. They meet quarterly for educational meetings and in other months for social meetings and After Hours events at members’ places of business. In 2016, the council developed the Universal Living Certification that helps new home builders build and certify homes that are designed for inhabitants of all ages and abilities. Membership in the Remodelers Council is $95/year for BIA Members and $200/ year for non-members.

Jim Evatt elected 2018 Chairman The membership of the Remodelers Council voted Jim Evatt of Palmetto Construction & Renovations as Chairman of the council. Jim assumed the role on January 1, 2018 and will serve as Chairman until December 31, 2018. We welcome Sharon Cross of Gateway Supply and Raleigh Gold of Gold Guard Pest Control to the committee as new Members-at-Large. Special thanks to our outgoing Chairwoman, Jennifer Cannon of Century Glass. Jennifer set high goals for the council and brought many new ideas and much excitement to the council. She will remain on the Executive Committee as Immediate Past Chairwoman through 2018. Thanks also to Andrew Cole and Brian Hess for their service on the Executive Committee over the years, as they are leaving the committee this year.

REMODELERS AFTER HOURS AT SIC

The Remodelers Council met on Thursday, Feb. 1 at Southeastern Insurance Consultants (SIC) in Irmo for an After Hours event. The SIC team cooked Boston Butts, baked beans and cole slaw for the event. Over 30 members and guests were in attendance for the gathering. Thanks to Ed Byrd and the whole SIC Team for a great event!

SATTERFIELD ELECTED PRESIDENT OF BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL SOUTH CAROLINA

Mike Satterfield was elected as 2018 President of the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA), at the Annual Meeting of the Membership held October 10, 2017. He will assume the duties of President in January 2018. Born in Greenville, SC, Mr. Satterfield attended Parker High School and then took a job as an Assistant Superintendent at the Westminister Company. His responsibilities grew until he became chief of the company’s multi-family division. In 1989 he started with Centex Homes where he stayed until 2006 and was Central SC Division President.

Mr. Satterfield then co-founded Satterfield, Chavis & Sons in 2006. Difficult economic times led to the closing of that company in 2013 and he then went to work with Great Southern Homes. He is currently Executive VP and CEO of the company. In the past thirty nine years he has supervised the construction of 1,000 apartment homes; the development of 5,000 residential lots and 10,000 new homes. After being a member of the association for many years Mr. Satterfield joined the BIA Board of Directors in 2015 as a Builder Director and then moved to Secretary in 2016 and Treasurer in 2017. In addition to his duties on the board, he is very involved in the BIA Golf Classic and in building the membership of the association. In fact, he sponsored the most new members this year and was named the 2017 Frank D. Clark SPIKE of the Year. In recognition of all he has accomplished, the membership voted him the 2017 Builder Member of the Year. Mr. Satterfield lives in Chapin with his wife, Claudia. They have one son, Skyler, and they attend Chapin Methodist church. When he’s not working or at a BIA Meeting, he enjoys hunting and fishing. He is past President of the Quality Deer Management Association – Chapin/Newberry Branch. Serving as officers of the BIA are Jennifer Harding of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage as Vice President; Brandon Jeffcoat of Clark’s Termite & Pest Control as Associates Vice President; Thom Chumney of The Mungo Company as Treasurer; and R.B. Gallup of Gallup & LaFitte – Design-Build as Secretary. In addition, the membership elected three Associates Directors and five Builder Director to the board each for two-year terms. The Associate Directors are Jennifer Cannon of Century Glass; Becca Kingery of Allied Air Enterprises and Gary Pickren of Blair Cato Pickren Casterline, LLC. The new Builder Directors are Patrick Bukszar of Essex Homes; Patrick McGivern of Ryan Homes; Scott Morrison of Great Southern Homes, Inc.; Stan O’Brien of Paradime Construction Inc.; and, Andrew White of Edge City Homes. Chairpersons of BIA councils and chapters also have a seat on the Board of Directors. Included here are Charlie Barber of Essex Homes serving as Chairman of the High Performance Building Council; Jim Evatt of Palmetto Construction & Renovations serving as Chairman of the BIA Remodelers Council; Lee Glaze of SCE&G serving as Chairman of the Sumter/Clarendon Chapter; Mark Hood of Hood Construction serving as Chairman of the Commercial Council; Kim O’Quinn of Mungo Homes, Inc. serving as Chairwoman of the Sales and Marketing Council; and, Kevin Steelman of LandTech Inc. of SC serving as Chairman of the Land Development Council. Mr. Satterfield was installed as President of the association at the annual BIA Holiday Ball on December 8, 2017. All new board members began their terms in January 2018.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL The High Performance Building Council (HPBC) was formed in 2007 by members of the Building Industry Association of Central SC (BIA) who were interested in learning more about sustainable residential construction and who had green products and services available in the marketplace. Today, the council enjoys a membership comprised of various members of the BIA in home building, remodeling and many different trade partners specializing in all sorts of green products and services. Members meet once a month for a Membership Meeting, On-site Experience or other educational and networking meeting. The HPBC is also the certifying agent of the Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home program. The program is designed so that any home builder can pick it up and build a third-party verified, high performance home. Charlie Barber elected 2018 HPBC Chairman The membership of the High Performance Building Council (HPBC) elected Charlie Barber of Essex Homes as 2018 Chairman. Charlie assumed his new role on January 1, 2018 and will serve through December 31, 2018. We also welcome Charley Weir of The Building Center to the Executive Committee in an Advisory Position. Special thanks to Jenny Nettles of Epic Homes, LLC. Jenny served as Chairwoman of the HPBC in 2017. Jenny brought a new exuberance to the committee and excelled in new member recruitment. She will remain on the committee as Immediate Past Chair in 2018. Thanks also to Anne Campbell and Clay Walsh for their service to the council as they left the committee in 2018.
