JEREMY HOLMES 1/4 Mile, 2018 solid white ash hardwood, monofilament line, cable

Monika Haefelfinger

Anna Hoffman

On view in the Blue Lobby through June 2019 is a site-specific installation entitled “1/4 Mile,” by New York artist Jeremy Holmes. Holmes “draws” through the entire space of the Blue Lobby using thin boards of bent white ash hardwood that wrap around columns from ceiling to floor. As a three-dimensional line in space, the work gracefully winds through the space enveloping the viewer through its continuous abstract shapes. Action, spontaneity and improvisation culminate as the final products of Holmes’ refined craft process that involves raw bending, finishing, joining, sanding and craftsmanship. Jeremy Holmes grew up in Cooperstown, NY and studied at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he graduated with a BFA in Sculpture in 2007. He currently lives and has his studio in Ithaca, NY. The artist states: “I construct abstract wood sculptures, which emphasize materiality and an engagement between the viewer, the site, and the work. Seen as three-dimensional line drawings in space, the installations collaborate with unique found architecture to construct a new and unexpected space made by joining long thin lengths of wood together. I make thin boards using traditional woodworking techniques, soak the wood in water and then use a free form bending method to bend the long pieces into abstract shapes. Once the wood has dried I am able to finish it and join them together into different configurations, including small and large sculptures, which contrast with the geometric rooms that we build and live in. The viewer becomes aware of the whole volume of a room with my work because of the way it travels around the floors, walls and ceiling. Social and public art is the main interest that I am focusing on now, trying to get art into unused spaces in original and un-expecting ways, filling voids in interiors that otherwise go un-noticed.” For further information please contact PDC Curator Helen Varola at helen@helenvarola.com.

ROCKY! The 40-year Design Industry Veteran Gets Feted at PDC Gala on September 26 by Gregory Firlotte

W

ho could have predicted that when Roche Michael LaFleur moved to Los Angeles in 1978 he would not only transform himself from small-town South Dakota boy into a vital member of the West Hollywood design community, but he would help change the very fabric of that community itself, along the way. “Rocky LaFleur has been a part of my entire life in design which started in West Hollywood,” notes industry powerhouse Roger Thomas, Executive Vice President of Design with Wynn Design & Development in Las Vegas. “He is, very simply, the single most important industry connection of my career.” Major words from a major player, for sure. So how did Roche-turned-Rocky get to be such a mover, shaker and influencer? Believe it or not, it all came about from being raised in a town of 443 residents (which has since grown to 547 as of last count). “There was an advantage to growing up in a town so small that you knew everybody and we all shared the same values,” notes LaFleur. “To me, it’s about community, any community, and its values. And I saw West Hollywood in the same light. I didn’t see it as an industry, but a community that had values that I believed in as well.” He remembers as a young boy his father lifting him up onto a counter at the family-owned gas station, speaking some fateful words. “He said ‘you have a remarkable gift and I hope you use it well’,” recalls LaFleur in a reflective, nostalgic tone. And West Hollywood was the place where that gift would shine. Not knowing a soul upon landing his first job at the now-defunct Wallpride showroom on Robertson Boulevard was no obstacle for him, in fact it presented the perfect opportunity to meet the design community as Wallpride was an active industry member of the Los Angeles chapter of ASID … an organization that LaFleur would call home for the next 40 years. His lifelong sense of curiosity and love of learning led him to totally immersing himself in every aspect of the design world, from working with vendors, manufacturers, showroom owners and craftspeople, to developing relationships (as well as lasting friendships) with designers, architects and even design school students who showed great promise and an eagerness to learn. And it was Pacific Design Center’s first president Murray Feldman that LaFleur looked to as a mentor who helped expand his connections with the industry’s leaders and top companies. “Our industry has always been, is and will always be about individual relations,” says LaFleur resolutely. It didn’t take long for LaFleur to connect to people not only in the design world but also in the realms of theater, art, music and virtually all things cultural in Los Angeles and the community at large. Working his way from Wallpride to outside sales for fabric house Pindler & Pindler, to vice president of real estate for Pacific Design Center, to a brief stint developing trade shows at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, LaFleur returned to L.A. working outside sales for Bradbury Collection, finally “fulfilling his destiny” (as LaFleur puts it) by settling in at Kneedler Fauchère in 2003. The journey sealed the very notion of the colorfully animated, always enthusiastic “Rocky” in the collective mind of the design industry. Says longtime friend to Rocky, acclaimed designer and showroom

owner Holly Hunt, “Rocky is always a connector and a peace maker, spreading friendship and love through the industry.” Along the way, LaFleur has received industry-wide accolades and awards, including the Los Angeles ASID chapter’s Ray Craig Award in 1987 for his outstanding service to the community, as well as the Wilson Associates Point of Excellence Award in 2003. And always, his thoughts over the decades have been on those who have yet to become a part of the greater community: the design student. “Everything I know I’ve learned from someone else,” LaFleur is quick to point out. “And mentoring people is something that an evolved culture does. By mentoring design students, we are helping to ensure a well-informed professional coming into the marketplace … in other words, to continue the business that we all know and love.” To that end, La Fleur has devoted a generous chunk of his time to lecturing at design schools, giving tours to students and mentoring individual students to the degree of helping them find industry jobs. “By mentoring students, you help to ‘craft’ their careers,” notes LaFleur. “In fact, that is exactly what I have done. I have crafted my life and career in this industry to have a purposefulness in everything I do. And now that I have come this far in our community, I want to do my part by giving back.” It is that “giving back” over the course of four decades that inspired the L.A. chapter of ASID to bestow its first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award to LaFleur on September 26 at an evening gala at PDC, known as the “Honor Rocky” event. And for the event’s purposefulness to be a fundraiser for the chapter’s Harold Grieve Design Student Scholarship Fund is certainly befitting. “We are thrilled to honor and celebrate Rocky for all his contributions to the interior design community and beyond,” says the event’s steering committee chair Suzanne Furst, ASID, CID. Not only are design professionals and peers on both coasts … and all points in between … excited about seeing their longtime associate being recognized in such a manner, but also family and a wide range of friends, including members of the media. Says Editor in Chief of Interiors Magazine, Erika Heet, “My favorite part of being Rocky’s friend is that look he gets in his eyes when he’s cooking up some new plan or collaboration you won’t be able to say ‘no’ to.” For all this seemingly sudden attention that was only four decades in the making, LaFleur is both overwhelmed and flattered by the response. “I like to think that the Lifetime Achievement Award is not so much about me at the end of the day,” he confides, “but rather about the opportunities I’ve had to learn, share and collaborate in the creative processes in this community, and that the community has allowed me to be a part of that.” LaFleur is eager to point out that the best advice he can give to anyone wanting to be involved in the design community and to reach the heights he has reached is also the same advice he has always given himself. “Just show up,” he says with that excited look in his eyes that Heet referred to. “When you do, something just might happen.” And sure enough, it did for Rocky.

French artist Aude Herlédan has never been one to blend-in. Having studied art at the prestigious L’Ecole Estienne, Aude would go on to work as a documentary filmmaker in East Africa and an advertising executive in Paris, before settling in to a career as a full-time painter and sculptor. For nearly two decades, Aude’s work was only made available to relatives and a handful of collectors. Today, Kneedler|Fauchère is thrilled to offer a speciallycurated collection of her paintings to their L.A. showroom.

RELOCATED/EXPANDED SHOWROOM

Have you experienced Pindler’s relocated showroom on PDC’s 4th Floor? Our new space is bigger and brighter than our former showroom, with natural light shining through windows illuminating this lovely environment. Designed to facilitate a userfriendly fabric shopping experience, the layout of the showroom creates a lighter feel.
