is a daughter to a Japanese/Kor ean father and a Filipina mother. She loves to play basketball, hitting the gym, roadtripping, cooking, singing dancing, playing musical instruments, and to travel. Its still a month since she moved in to Tokyo but she can already appreciate a lot of things about Japan. She finds the country clean, organized and convenient. It's efficient public transportatio n is second to none and its culture of good service, and of how products are presented here is just amazing. Fad in technology and fashion too is a constant thing to look forward to. Though being surrounded by the amazing things Japan provides she can't help miss the Philippines. It maybe a country of constant heat and humidity but it is the place where she grew up, the place which

molded her into the kind of person she is right now. It is the place where she earned a college

degree, learned a lot of crazy stuff, experience life's battles and most of all the place where she made a lot of good friends. She'd try her best to go back frequently and be reunited with the people that she misses a lot. Studying Nihongo and doing parttime work is what is keeping her busy lately. After becoming fluent in Japanese and having to save enough income, she would want to start a business here someday and provide everyone a place where we can chill and enjoy food, drinks and music.

SALT A L L

A B O U T

WORDS CHRIS RAYMUND I. FERNANDEZ Taekwondo Instructior and Crossfitter

Salt is sodium with chloride, most of us know the harm it can bring if we don't control salt intake. But we should also understand that salt is important, too little of this good thing may also be harmful. The recommended daily allowance of salt or sodium is 1,800 mg - 2,300mg that equals to one teaspoon a day. We can get sodium from almost all cooked food and also from almost all sauces. Here are some of the health benefits you can get from salt:

Water Balance- Sodium is one of those minerals which

Anti aging- Sodium is an important hydrating product of

helps to maintain water level in the human body. Sodium and water balance are very interdependent. It pumps water in the cell and regulates the amount of extra cellular fluid in the body.

anti-aging creams. It fights with the radicals which accelerate the aging process. It helps in restoring youthful and healthy skin.

Sunstroke- It is caused due to the failure of heat regulating system of the human body. This heat exhaustion is caused due to continuous exposure to very high temperature due to which the body loses its capacity to maintain the normal temperature. This condition is further aggravated due to the loss of salt and water from the body. Thus, Sodium plays a vital role in preventing sun stroke or heat prostration by replacing the loss of essential electrolytes. Besides water, drinking fluids containing salt and sugar is favorable against sunstroke. Salt can also be mixed with the drink of raw mangoes to provide more relief. It is very important for ultra endurance athletes.

Brain function- Brain is very sensitive to the change in sodium level of the body, which often leads to confusion and lethargy. Sodium aids in keeping the mind sharp. It is an important element for development of brain. Sodium facilitates the improvement of brain functions.

Muscle cramps- These are caused mostly during the hot summer months, due to electrolyte imbalance and dehydration. Thus, apart from proper hydration of the body, it is also important to supplement one’s body with sodium rich juices and fluids to restore the amount of electrolyte.

Eliminates excess carbon dioxide - Sodium plays an important role in the removal of excess amount of carbon dioxide accumulated in the body.

Maintains glucose absorption - It helps in absorption of glucose by cells for the smooth transportations of nutrients in body cell membranes.

Maintains acid-base balance - By altering proportions of acid-base alkali phosphates it controls reaction of urine in kidneys.

Regulation of fluids - The health benefits of sodium balances the osmotic pressure in the human body due to regulation of fluid in body cells.

Balance of ions- Sodium shares an association with chlorides and bicarbonates in maintaining a sound balance between two types of ions, positively charged ions as well as negatively charged ions.

Maintains healthy condition of the heart - It maintains the contraction of heart. It plays a vital role in maintaining the blood pressure of the human body. Increase in sodium content can dramatically boost the blood pressure.

Now that you know the benefits sodium brings, let us not forget that too much of a good thing has harmful effects in our body. Always put in mind not to exceed the recommended daily allowance to be on the safe side. Until next time, keep fit, stay healthy and strong. 8

THE RIGHT

EYEMAKEUP FOR RED LIPSTICK.

BEAUTY CALL

ed lips create such a statement that you don't want your smokey eyes to compete with them. Go for a MINIMAL eye makeup every time you put on a red lipstick. Well, It’s a simple matter of finding the right color combinations, and it’s easy to figure out once you have a few guidelines. What eyeshadow colors should you wear with a red lipstick? When in doubt, the best thing to do is to keep it neutral. Stay with the brown, gray and taupe tones. This is definitely not the time for plums or blues because they’ll clash with the red of the lipstick and look garish.

1

Start by putting vanilla or white matte eyeshadow all over the lid up to the browbone.

4

For this area a taupe or light brown matte shade will add depth to the crease. The crease color is usually darker and coordinates with the color(s) on your lid.

BY AKEMI KOBAYASHI - PO AND NIKI MEDINA

2

This is known as your base. Your base should always be the lightest color of any colors you choose to blend.

3

Using a fluffy brush put a taupe-y brown or light brown color on your crease and blend it.

5

Time for the winged eyeliner. you can use liquid or gel eyeliner. Gently drag the pen along the lashline and past the top outer corner of your eye. Follow the upward curve of your eye with the eye liner. For a dramatic winged look, draw farther out and angle the liner more.

7

6

Long eyelashes can make your eyes appear bigger and wider, and make you look more glamorous and sexy. Unfortunately, not all of us have been blessed to have such luscious and gorgeous lashes. Now, curl your lashes and apply a coat of mascara. This will help your natural lashes to blend better with the false ones. Now, curl your lashes and apply a coat of mascara. This will help your natural lashes to blend better with the false ones.

For the cheeks it’s important to keep it neutral and not too pink or plum. Be careful not to go too brown, or your skin could end up looking muddy and dirty. This would be a great time to use your bronzer as your cheek color or add a little bit of orange or peach blush.

So that's it! Here's the final look. We used 3 different shades of red lipstick (Orange Red , Bright Red and BurgundyRed or Vampy red. Have a happy make-up and be beautiful inside and out. Good luck!

lessed with talent and good looks, Joice Pecho is thankful that she is able to use these blessings to help out her family. STRANDed IN GERMANY

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY TOTOMAI www.totomai.net

ew weeks prior to my 3-day trip to Germany, I saw the film Goodbye Lenin and it gave me, in one way or another, an idea on what to expect in the said country. From Copenhagen, I took the train / ferry (which I didn’t know at first) directly to Hamburg. I reached Germany around 1200H, had a quick lunch at the station, went directly to the hostel, left my bags and surveyed the area around AuĂ&#x;enalster or Outer Alster Lake with maps in hands. The hostel is located at the heart of Hamburg so it was an all-walk trip for me. And since I only had a limited time in Germany, I hurried from one place to another. During my stay, there was an ongoing exhibit at the Hamburg Rathaus dedicated to Japan - and yes, it caught me by surprised. Being in Japan during the March

11 earthquake, the showcase was somewhat dedicated to me. Arigatou! Just a few steps away from,Rathaus was the Alsterarkaden. I think this is one of the popular tourist attractions in Hamburg. I spent couple of good minutes here. At first glance, it looked ordinary but the longer you stay, the more you appreciate its cinematic asset. I deduced to join the Hamburg tour on the Port of Hamburg. It was a good way to end the day, but I was a bit disappointed with the tour itself. I was expecting to see something exciting but nothing showed up until the very end. I can't remember the detailed activities on my second day in Hamburg but I knew I went back to the Port of Hamburg and walked around the area. Actually my second day was more of a recap on what had happened the day before. Fast forward to Berlin, Germany then. First stop was at Brandenburg Gate. There were lots of tourists on the entrance since the other side of the gate was restricted during that day. The marshals announced that the pope was visiting Berlin thus the tightened security. Reichstag was off-limits too. Since I only have approximately 8 hours in Berlin, I hurried to the Berlin Cathedral after having glimpses of Neue Wache, Konzerthaus Berlin and Fernsehturm Berlin. How I wish I had enough time in Berlin or should have stayed 2 days in Berlin and 1 day in Hamburg. Maybe next time. As I sprinted against time, I found myself in front on the Berlin Wall. These graffitis are very symbolic and each part of the wall has something to say. I think everyone is familiar with the history of Berlin Wall. I promised myself to go back to Berlin. I believe there's still a lot to see and in case I'm already done with Berlin, I still have the other parts of Germany to explore. That day was very hectic that I almost forgot to pee. In Europe, a quick comfort costs a euro, be sure to have one in your pocket. Always. That was exhausting! Yes, even in writing. Whew! Danke!

Naoji Kitaoka, President & CEO

Philippine Staff of PG&Co. ready to help you

PG& Co. multi-cultural staff ready to assist you in any language.
