Story of a Successful Project How a Popular Rental on Kiawah Island Was Updated by T h e Au d i o Wa r e h o u s e

ith spectacular views of Kiawah’s Ocean Course and the Atlantic Ocean, this popular rental home, stays booked year round. When it came time to do some updates to the home the owner felt it was time to upgrade its technology to meet the needs of today’s changing lifestyles and expectations of their guests. Entertainment is a key feature of the home, so we updated the surround sound system in the study, billiard and living rooms with Sony’s newest OLED TV’s ranging from a 77inch for the living room, and 65-inch for the billiard and study.

The master sitting area and bath were also upgraded with new Sonys. The distributed audio was upgraded with an easy-touse Sonos system for guests to enjoy their music. The project also included updating the security and life safety systems to current code with cellular back up communications. Likely the most requested feature by today’s homeowners was updating the data infrastructure for increased coverage of the wi-fi system inside, as well as in the outdoor entertaining spaces capable of supporting todays streaming services. The final challenge was for all the necessary equipment to be out of site so a hidden mechanical closet was created behind a removable display cabinet. For a project of this magnitude, planning is key to its success. We encourage clients to contact us early in the design stages. Working closely with the design and build teams early will ensure the outcome is exactly what you expected.

Passion for Etiquette Tiffany Miller started Home Etiquette to help homeowners achieve beautifully styled, organized, and functional spaces.

Why did you start Home Etiquette? As a little girl I would rearrange tables, organize spaces, and create an ambiance. It made my heart happy. As an adult, I’ve become my friend’s go-to resource for all things decorating, moving, packing, and creating new havens. This is what I was born to do, and I’m blessed to carry out my passion in Charleston.

What inspires you to create organized, aesthetically pleasing spaces for homeowners? I believe all of your belongings can be displayed in a bespoke way that is functional for you and still beautiful. I love to create an ambiance specific to a client’s lifestyle that makes their home more functional, relieving some of the stress factors that come with being unorganized. What really inspires me is making their space beautiful, like a place they would vacation, with the consideration of their favorite items being displayed. There is no heirloom, piece of art, or thing that brings back good memories that cannot find a home through thoughtful staging. It will be honored, elevated, and given new life.

I became obsessed with learning what I didn’t know about socializing correctly, and I’m still learning. I think the true definition of ‘etiquette’ is trying to be a better version of you, but also making others feel comfortable and at ease during interactions. I thought, why can’t this same concept be applied to your home? Style and grace that reflects you at your best and a place you would be proud to host an event while making your guests comfortable.

Tell us about the services you offer. Home organization, stress-free moving, and tablescaping for any special occasion. All of the above can cause us to be anxious. I love creating a personalized, ordered environment for a stress-free move, a functional and beautiful environment, taking the heavy load off my clients and allowing them to enjoy these important moments in their lives.

What are your hopes for the future as you continue to grow in the Charleston market?

How did you come up with the name Home Etiquette?

With dozens of stress-free moves and home organization projects completed, we have grown organically by word of mouth. I am proud to say that all of our clients are now references and left us with great reviews. This makes me happy for Home Etiquette’s future.

I grew up in a small town with a mother who was comprised of class. When I was young, I always looked up to classic actresses like Audrey Hepburn.

A Thought Out Design Landscape architects JR and Holly Kramer of REMARK Landscape Architecture enlighten us on different elements of a landscape design.

Holly Said: My favorite native plant is Beautyberry, or Callicarpa americana, because of its versatility in the landscape and its change through the seasons. The fall berries are a beautiful, bright purple that are loved by birds.

Travertine is a durable material that can be used in a large, linear format to create a modern feel, or a smaller scale format with a leathered finish for traditional styles.

Greenwalls are a great element to add to a landscape, especially in smaller spaces like downtown gardens. Adding plants in a vertical format can give you that lush, verdant atmosphere that creates an oasis in the midst of a hardscaped patio.

Most Unique Element You’ve Designed?

My favorite native plant is found in a unique Lowcountry ecosystem that is rare today. The Longleaf Pine, or Pinus palustris, was the dominant species in the fire prone savannahs of the southeast. They are very slow growing and appear grasslike in their youth, and can be used as an accent or in buffer plantings.

Considering we are in the Lowcountry, where drainage issues and large rain events often occur, any permeable hardscape material, such as concrete or gravel, is a great choice that we use often.

We designed a corten steel planter with large chunks of blue glass and internal lighting for a company courtyard. The company’s name included the word blue, so at night, the glowing blue glass really reinforces the name and is very whimsical.

HOMEWORK

At Home With

Kim and Beth Clark of Palmetto Surfacing The Clarks run a family business; their son Jackson is in charge of field operations and laser templating, and their niece Elizabeth Hirschmann is their general manager. Over the years, they’ve worked together to not only bring stunning surfaces to their client’s homes, but also their own.

1 The Clark’s kitchen is topped with a natural stone in ‘Blue Flower’. With a strong desire to break out of the allwhite kitchen trend, this surface was the perfect choice. The slab was large enough to complete the island without a seam so it’s just one piece rather than multiple. Kim and Beth loved the mix of the blues and gray with the chocolate brown.

2 Wanting a more coastal feel, the

laundry room features Cambria Quartz ‘Bellingham’. This surface resembles oyster shells so it gives the look the Clarks desired. Since the laundry room gets a lot of use, it was important to use Cambria Quartz because of its durability. The blend of cream, taupe, and black pairs well with the iron pulls seen on the cabinetry.

3 Cambria ‘Britannica Gold’ was used in

the master bathroom. The countertop has a marble-like appearance with the durability of quartz, which was of top priority for the bathroom since it is a high traffic area. The light creme color is accented with gold veining that complements the gold fixtures throughout the space.

chose a Calcutta gold marble. The particular slab they chose stood out to them amongst the others. The beautiful piece is the perfect surface for the powder room, and still remains cohesive with the rest of the house. CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

Renovations, Carpentry, & Empathy Katelyn and Kyle Irizarry of Polished Renovations and Design met as chefs at a restaurant. They soon decided to abandon the kitchen for the workshop. They founded Polished Renovations and Designs with their friend Ben Fitzgerald. Now they deliver high quality renovations and custom pieces to Charleston.

The Craftspeople:

Katelyn has a creative eye and an affinity for coordinating details and plans for clients, while Kyle runs the financials and manages the materials needed for renovations. Ben brings his fine-tuned carpentry skills and knowledge of construction to the table.

Their Process:

“We try not to make too many broad strokes when planning a project with our clients,” Katelyn says. This means Polished Renovations and Design takes detailed measurements and goes through a process for defining the client’s exact needs. Their designers also take on a project management role, which makes the task of coordinating between clients, designers, and carpenters so much easier.

Katelyn, Kyle, and Ben recognize that choosing a renovation company means a long term relationship. They pride themselves on being able to listen to clients’ needs, define important details in their plans, offer reliable service, and maintain open lines of communication. “Our entire team has lived through a renovation,” Katelyn says, and they want to offer their business as well as their empathy to all of their clients. What inspired you to become a custom home builder? I began working in the construction industry as a licensed master plumber and mechanical contractor, and owned a successful plumbing company for 15 years. My wife Shelley and I were always fascinated by the design process of building and remodeling homes. We started Priester’s Custom Contracting in order to help clients through the intricate process of making their dream home a reality.

What celebrity builder do you look up to and why? I would have to say that I admire Chip and Joanna Gaines. They are also a husband and wife team that work well together and still love to spend time together as a family. Shelley and I can relate to this through owning two businesses together.

Let’s talk about the challenges that come along with building a custom home. There are so many little details that need to be addressed when building a custom home. One of the most critical aspects to ensure a smooth process is hiring a knowledgeable builder who can fit all the details together and coordinate the subcontractors at just the right time to ensure the progression of construction isn’t held up.

How long does a typical build take? What factors affect that timeline? A custom home typically takes between nine months to a year depending on the size of the home. There are several factors that contribute to the length of the build including availability of materials, scheduling of trades, weather, inspections, etc. I visit each job site daily to ensure the process moves smoothly so we aren’t losing valuable time or money.

Why did you want to become an architect? In 8th grade an architect came and spoke at career day. I knew right then it was my future profession, and I have never wavered. It’s a unique profession that some people feel very called into. It requires the gifts of spatial understanding, an artistic eye, and natural, mathematical skills. It is a Godgifted profession, and I am blessed to be one of His chosen.

What influences your designs? The homeowner’s style and needs, the community’s style, the climate, views, trees, and other site conditions all factor into the design of a home. A home should be a physical depiction of a family’s blended personalities.

How do you incorporate unique details into your designs? Well-appointed details are what sets a home apart. I love “X” rail handrails and gable brackets. An untrained eye may not know what they love about a home, but they may know it just feels right. It comes down to specific sizes of materials melding with proportionate massing that makes architecture visual eye candy.

Tell us a bit about your background. Where did you go to school and what made you want to study design? I earned my degree in Architecture from Miami University of Ohio. We focused on spatial design, how people think and feel in a space, and adapting buildings to the surroundings. I studied energy-efficient design with a summer abroad in Eastern Europe, and then traveled to Malta where we had to identify local materials on the island to utilize in energy-efficient design. After I graduated, I began to think that maybe architecture wasn’t my end goal anymore. Then I had the opportunity to work in interior design. After visiting Charleston, I kept the idea of moving here in the back of my mind. The interior designer role opened up at Steven Shell and I knew it was the perfect job.

What inspires your designs? Context. Everything from the setting, the view, down to the bones of the house. And the client’s style—it’s important that they feel comfortable and happy in their own space.

How do you design separate spaces so each is unique, but still cohesive? I figure out the design aesthetic we are looking to capture. I admittedly go through a trial and error process of pulling multiple furniture ideas for each space and figuring out what works together to create a vision. I don’t just work room by room. I think of the whole house and pull together each piece as I go, ensuring there is overall aesthetic coordination.

What design element should every homeowner consider incorporating? Two things come to mind. Wood elements help warm the space. Storage Tips from

Charleston Cabinets Anticipating functional storage solutions is an important part of building a new home. Jay Floyd of Charleston Cabinets Inc. worked closely with contractor Dustin Rooke, owner of the The Rooke Company.

The Setting:

Dustin built his home on Folly Beach. In order to achieve a modern look, Charleston Cabinets installed Kraftmaid Cabinetry in a full-overlay ‘Maxton’ door style with a ‘Dove White’ high-gloss finish. Large Sonoma hardware pulls were also installed.

The Problem:

Even though the home was new construction, there were still some storage concerns that needed to be addressed. Dustin needed better organization, more functional storage, and decluttered countertops in his kitchen.

Charge Stations

There were a variety of elements that Charleston Cabinets used in Dustin’s home to combat the cabinet organization and ensure that the space remained contemporary. A charging drawer was installed to reduce the clutter on the counter and hide wires. RollOut trays were added to some of the lower cabinets to better take advantage of the space. Michael Gregory of Express Sunrooms recognizes the importance of positive work relationships with his employees and customers. Express Sunrooms builds sunrooms and so much more including docks, screen rooms, pergolas, and other outdoor living spaces.

Michael arrives early in the morning to begin reviewing his calendar. He checks to see what projects are in progress, and what project inspections were completed the previous day. He also looks over the material delivery schedule for the day’s projects and plans out his appointments for the day. Michael then has a meeting with the construction superintendent to discuss the projects that are underway.

Michael completes a walkthrough of the warehouse before leaving the office to go to design consultations, or sales appointments. Between appointments, he makes stops at a few projects that are underway. Here he collaborates with installers, project managers, and homeowners to ensure the construction process is moving along smoothly.

Michael returns to the field for more appointments and project site visits. “The truck is a rolling office, and communication is the key to success,” Michael says. While he is out in the field, Michael is constantly taking calls and sending emails and texts to his clients and employees. Construction is an ever changing business, and Michael enjoys the variation of his days.

At this time, the showroom is open. Michael goes over the service request appointments with the service tech. Then, he meets with the office manager about outstanding and approved HOA and building department permits for the projects that he is working on. Michael usually meets with an employee for lunch outside of the office. He uses this as an opportunity to build relationships with his employees. “We want a team of upbeat people who love what they do,” Michael says, and one way of ensuring this is to set aside time to build positive relationships.

5:00pm Michael returns to the office. His last task is to have a Zoom meeting with the design team to discuss their sales appointments of the day. This is to ensure that the team is all on the same page so they can wake up bright and early the next day and tackle brand new projects. How to Protect Your Plants Even though we don’t typically get many days where temperatures drop to 20 or 30 degrees, plants still automatically know how to prepare for that. When plants are preparing for the cooler temperatures, they become dormant. They go through an acclimation process which allows them to withstand the colder weather. All plants have a maximum level of cold they can tolerate, which varies by species and location. For example, the same species of plant will acclimate differently in the South than in the North. There are a few preventative techniques to help limit the damage that might be done to your plants when temperatures drop. 1. Continue watering regularly so that plants don’t lose moisture. Plants in containers dry out faster so pay special attention to them. 2. Spread fresh mulch—chopped leaves and pine straw are suggested because they won’t compact. 3. Add a trunk wrap to prevent sunscald; a condition that is caused by alternate freezing and thawing of water in the trunk, and occurs on the southwest side of the trunk where it is most exposed to afternoon sun.

hen Acacia Lohman began working with Circa Lighting they collaborated primarily with designers and their fixtures were mostly used for focal areas of the home such as a unique flush mount in a foyer, a dining room chandelier, or kitchen pendants. But over the past few years, Acacia and the Circa Lighting team crafted relationships with builders as well. “We are approaching projects as ‘whole houses’. As our clients gave feedback, our offerings have grown to include something for every part of the house,” Acacia explains. Circa Lighting offers homeowners everything from decorative

and exterior lighting to fans and recessed lighting. For this particular project the collaboration between the homeowner Jen Heggie, Coleman Builders, Heather A. Wilson Architect, Jenny Keenan Design, and Circa Lighting led to such a successful project for everyone. “We called on Allen with Coleman Builders after seeing several amazing homes he completed in the area. He also worked with several designers who were Circa Lighting clients. We began our partnership in 2018 and have completed 10 houses as one of Allen’s trade partners,” Acacia mentions. “Something truly incredible about Allen is his ability to construct

homes that are all different styles. He is able to reflect each homeowner’s aesthetic throughout the house. For us as the lighting provider, we try to duplicate that with the lighting.” Allen introduced Acacia to Jen. Jen came into the store with her plans and went through the home room by room. Aesthetic preferences and various finishes were discussed. Since Jen was already very familiar with Circa, they placed fixtures she had chosen and made suggestions for areas she hadn’t. During the selection process, Acacia asked Jen about finishes being used in the house such as plumbing fixtures, hardware, color palette, and style. It’s important that fixtures complement each other when they are in close proximity.

Acacia also walked through the house when it was under construction to ensure overall heights were correct and fixtures were to scale for the space. This Mt. Pleasant home features a variety of unique elements that make it stand out—a floating staircase, a EuroWall in the living room, a custom bar with retractable steel doors, custom cubbies in the mudroom, and much more. Backyard Dreams Come True These landscape architects partnered with a boutique outdoor product shop to create their dream outdoor oasis.

or 25 years, Backyard Retreats has been providing outdoor furnishings to Lowcountry homeowners. Over those years, mother/daughter duo Sharon Campbell and Darla Miller have learned what products work well in our climate. As a specialty outdoor boutique store, these ladies are designers, creating outdoor spaces their customers love spending time in. They connected with these particular homeowners after Darla assisted them on numerous commercial and residential design projects. “From those experiences, we knew we wanted

to work with them for our personal residence,” adds the homeowner. As landscape architects, the homeowners were looking for quality products that accompanied their designs—they found that at Backyard Retreats. “We were looking for contemporary furnishings that complemented the architecture, material selections, and accent colors associated with our home,” the wife begins. “We sought out furnishings from various product lines that were well made, thoughtfully designed, and brought out the best features from our pool and cabana de-

sign.” The goal was to create their own outdoor oasis that highlighted design elements they’d seen on their travels. On Sharon and Darla’s end, a project can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the project and what’s needed. However, at this time during the pandemic, projects are taking a bit longer because it’s taking longer to ship items. “As far as timeline, this project was pretty typical. Due to the pandemic, a few items did take slightly longer than normal; however we ended up being able to coordinate the delivery of the furniture with the completion of their backyard,” Darla mentions. In addition to the more contemporary pieces that these homeowners selected, Backyard Retreats also carries a variety of eco-friendly products. Recycled polymer is just one of those options—this is a product made entirely of recycled milk jugs. One of their vendors Ebel, Inc. has been partnering with a company called Trees for the Future since 2007. “It is an organization committed to promoting agroforestry and providing renewable energy to impoverished areas. For ev-

Custom Color Mix The team at Sherwin-Williams worked with designer Alexandre Fleuren to find the perfect custom color for the bourbon room in this Lowcountry abode.

enry Sherwin and Edward Williams founded the Sherwin-Williams Company in 1866 in Cleveland, Ohio. The company created ready-mixed paint in 1880 which changed the paint world forever. Sherwin-Williams has been a leading manufacturer of paints, lacquers, and varnishes in the United States since the 20th Century. Each year, a Color Mix is released from the company showing a forecast of the most popular colors of the upcoming year. Tori Mullin, a Charleston Sherwin-Williams Designer Account Executive, explains the inspiration for the 2021 Color Mix. “The uncertainty of 2020 has left us all seeking something relatable to mindful living,” she begins. “Our heartbeats and breath are constant reminders that life’s rhythm steadily moves within 108 • CH+D • Winter 2021

and around us. We’re creating comfortable spaces that looks back to the basics, tell a story, invite personality, and transition to new possibilities in the digital age.” This particular home showcases the 2021 Color Mix. As a Designer Account Executive, Tori’s role is to support designers and architects with the color and paint specifications for their client’s projects. Tori notes that designers are specialists in color, so she helps with color identification questions, custom color requests, and providing color tools to simplify the color selection process for them and their clients. Tori says for this particular project, the interior designer Alexandre Fleuren contacted Sherwin-Williams for a color she imagined but couldn’t find in a current color collection. Alexandre had two colors

(Andiron and Secret Garden) that were close, but not perfect. Alexandre took the colors to the Sherwin-Williams on Hwy. 41, and the manager broke down the formulas for both colors and combined part of each, which resulted in her dream color. The bourbon room in this Lowcountry dwelling uses principles of biophilia, or bringing the outdoors in, which is one of the key principles of the Sherwin-Williams color forecast. Deep green walls echo the landscape and the blue calms this boating family’s retreat, according to Tori. With the partnership between Sherwin-Williams and Alexandre, the bourbon room is more than just a haven. “The space invites thoughtful conversation about the past through an heirloom treasure—a piece of the original Wright Brothers plane signed by them,” Tori adds. “Ultimately, the space embodies the passion of this family and reflects most of the major

themes in the color forecast for 2021.” There are multiple tools that Sherwin-Williams offers homeowners to ensure they are getting the colors they want in their spaces. An in-home consultation program, which has gone completely virtual since COVID, helps the homeowners get expert advice for color selection. There is also the Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap app which helps homeowners envision and compare during their color selection process, but Tori recommends homeowners purchase a few samples so they can see it in person. 2021 will bring new initiatives for Sherwin-Williams and they are already working on the color forecast for 2022. Family-Friendly Flooring Horses, children, dogs, and chickens add lots of fun for the Silva family so they needed durable, easy-to-clean flooring throughout their Summerville home.

Mr. Silva had big dreams for the home: a place where his friends and family could spend time together and a kitchen where everyone could gather for holidays was of utmost importance. He and his wife opted for Maple Espresso cabinets on the base and a Maple Rye finish for the uppers. A few glass

Rugs also help with the longevity of the finish. Livia notes that their goal with every new project is to make sure they are meeting the style of their clients and directing them to the best product for their family. Converting a Historic Home These Lowcountry homeowners collaborated with a designer they’d worked with in the past to bring their converted inn, 620 Prince, to life.

nterior design should always be a reflection of the homeowner, and that’s just how Terri Baldwin of CHD Interiors approaches each project. “A good designer is a great listener—we have to glean from conversations the personality of a client and then make sure it is reflected in the implementation of the design plan,” she notes. “A client shall always see himself or herself in the room whether through their artwork, collectibles, or simply the color palette.” This approach to design brought Terri and these clients together long ago, and they have since continued their relationship.

Terri has degrees in architecture and design, so when these clients decided

to transform their historic Lowcountry home into an inn, they reunited with her to bring the vision to fruition. Together, they created design goals to maintain the history of the home while also making it current and welcoming. The process began with fabric selection. “We selected several signature fabrics for the main living spaces, the sitting room, and the dining room. We used patterns with vibrant colors and built on them with rugs, lighting, and accessories,” Terri begins. “The den space adjacent to the kitchen had a more subtle palette. Each of the guest rooms has a unique color story and bespoke furniture and lighting. All of the bedding is washable, which was a requirement

Comfort and Function The guest rooms needed to be livable, so Terri and the team worked to integrate bathrooms into each room that looked like they had always been there. Closets were also designed to provide storage that the original home lacked.

Curated Design Each element from the fabrics and lighting to the styling pieces was expertly selected by Terri and the owners to ensure the design came together as planned.

Once the initial decisions were made and the palette was established it was time to study each room’s layout and functionality. Since this had been a home before it was an inn, there were no en suite bathrooms for each room. Terri worked with the builder to layout new bathroooms. The challenge here was to make sure that the bathrooms fit into the flow seamlessly and no appear like contemporary addons. Another important addition was storage. Many historic homes do not have traditional closets which was the case for the circa 1882 home. Terri designed custom cabinetry and closet space in many of the guest room. Terri loves installation day, in this case it was installation week. This is

the time when all of the planning and organizing comes to life. When these elements are all done, final styling and accessorizing happens. “This is my favorite part of the process—when all the elements that have been in production independently are finally brought together,” Terri expresses. “I love being able to translate the thoughts and feelings a client has into finished spaces.” Working with the inn owners, Terri was able to use many skills during the renovation process. Designing new bathrooms for each guest room allowed her to use her architecture degree—it was vital to understand bathroom layouts and be able to draw scale drawings for the builders. Terri also used her architecture background to draw space plans for all of the furniture layouts prior to purchasing everything so they were able to make informed decisions based on those drawings. In addition, an understanding of

models so they automatically close at the sign of inclement weather. Electric fresh air skylights block heat while still allowing the natural light to pour through. The venting in these skylights reduces the need for air conditioning, and helps to improve indoor air quality. As with the solar powered skylights, electric skylights also have the rain sensor. SunTunnel skylights are another option. These are modern skylights that integrate with your roof line. When they’re installed, they resemble can lights so they aren’t quite as noticeable as a skylight. The first step Natural Home Lite takes when working with a new customer is to schedule an in-home

evaluation where they take measurements to ensure everything the homeowner is expecting will work. After speaking with their client, the team works to identify the end goal. They show before and after photos, and in most cases, give an estimate on site. There’s No ‘I’ in Team It takes more than one company to build a custom home. In this case a builder, architect, homeowners and building material suppliers worked together to create a stunning coastal home.

outhern Lumber & Millwork is a locally run, 4th generation family business. They focus heavily on building supply and millwork materials in the Charleston area. Tightlines Construction is one of Southern Lumber’s longtime customers. William Albrecht III and Brad Watkins of Southern Lumber, Drew Baldrick and Steve Baldrick from Tightlines Construction, along with architect Aaron Ede created this wonderful property for these Isle of Palms homeowners.

For this project, Southern Lumber was there from start to finish. In the early stages Aaron, William, Drew, and Steve all sat down together to discuss the

products that were going to be used in the build. “This was hugely beneficial to the success of the home,” William said. They spent a lot of time custom designing the interior trim, radius ceiling, and baseboard transitions. The homeowners wanted the office space and downstairs living area to be ornate, but not too over the top. William’s favorite design aspect of the space is the circular ceiling in the downstairs living room. This ceiling wasn’t a part of the original plans, but because of the expert collaboration between the homeowners, the architect, the builders, and the suppliers, they were able to make it happen. This steady and direct collaboration between all aspects of the team is

what made the project go so smoothly. William also notes that the homeowners were a pleasure to work with. “They were knowledgeable, open to new ideas, and wanted to use the best products to achieve a high quality home.” This space uses a lot of William’s favorite building materials, which Southern Lumber carries. AdvanTech sheathing was used on the walls and roof. These sheaths are a “gamechanger” as they are incredibly moisture resistant. They also used Nucedar shakes with a combed face on the exterior of the home. This product looks like real cedar, but

it doesn’t require as much maintenance. The deck is made of IPE, a beautiful and long lasting Brazilian wood that is naturally rot and decay resistant. In addition to all of these products, poplar was used to make the custom interior trim that William and the team designed themselves. The team’s ability to work so closely with his clients and the builders and architect is what really made this Isle of Palms home so special.✴

Captivating Color Bobbi Hoffmann of House of Hoffmann Interiors reconnected with a childhood friend to help he and his wife add color and unique pieces to their Lowcountry home’s interior.

ith an interest in art ingrained in her for as long as she can remember, when Bobbi Hoffmann decided to go back to work after having her children, interior design seemed like the right choice. “At that point I had been the GC on three home renovation projects,” Bobbi notes. “Given my innate ability, exposure growing up, and true love for design it was a natural fit.” At that point, Bobbi took courses in design and received her certification and has been designing ever since. Originally from New England, Bobbi and her family moved to Charleston about three years ago. Switching from the traditional style of New England to the coastal style of the Lowcountry was a welcomed change. “I love that Palm Beach, vintage, colorful, pink vibe so the aesthetic here fits me very

well.” Word of mouth has been huge for Bobbi’s success in Charleston, though that’s not actually how she connected with these particular clients. Funnily enough, Bobbi went to junior high with the husband. Bobbi took matters into her own hands and messaged his wife on Facebook after seeing they too lived in the Charleston area. “I said, ‘I understand you don’t really know me but if you could provide any advice on school districts, the area in general, or anything we need to know, because we’re going to sell everything and move down,’ and ultimately she responded.” Bobbi worked with the couple to provide an interior design plan for the first floor and part of the second floor. Bobbi starts every process with an inhome consultation so she can see the space. She and the client go through an interview process to determine

if it’ll be the right fit for both of them. During the consultation Bobbi takes measurements so that once she gets the job, she can start the design process while being cognizant of her client’s time. She moves on to creating the actual designs, floor plans, sourcing, and determining an install date. They go through a first review with a fine tooth comb to ensure all of the selections are correct and then Bobbi orders everything. Install day comes and the clients are surprised when they walk through their doors to a finished space. Bobbi loves to pull pieces from local vintage shops to make the space feel warm and cozy, and create a sense of home with personality. This home was finished in a modern beach theme that’s light and bright, and showcases lots of color. Vintage Turkish rugs were brought in for Bobbi’s signature vintage touch, and eyecatching light fixtures were worked into the design of each room. Condo Combination Professional remodelers were enlisted to help these Lowcountry dwellers renovate their two condos.

lassic Remodeling & Construction has been in the Charleston area for over 30 years. They specialize in high-end remodels, renovations, and additions. A business associate of the company referred them to these homeowners. This couple was hoping to combine their two condos into one, so Classic Remodeling was brought on to execute the renovation.

The homeowners decided to downsize but their current condo didn’t provide quite enough space to allow them to maintain some of the important elements they wanted to transfer from their home. By purchasing the condo

from across the hall and combining the two units, they could achieve their goal of downsizing but still have adequate space for the important items they wanted to keep. Classic Remodeling was able to seamlessly include these rooms in the new design. It was important that the hallway was elegantly incorporated into the remodel. It is fashioned as a unique art gallery as you enter the home. However, Christy Ammerman of Classic Remodeling & Construction says that her favorite element of the home is the hidden utility room. “At the end of the main hallway there is the feature artwork with built-in bookcases on either side,” she explains. “We made one of the bookcases into

a secret door that leads you into a room with extra storage cabinets and the washer and dryer.” The process of this remodel was a little different for Christy and the Classic Remodeling team. There were a number of existing structural elements that needed to be uncovered during the demolition phase of the project, like steel beams and concrete columns. “The locations of those elements affected how we approach the design of the new space,” Christy adds. “So unlike most projects, we had to complete demolition before we could even begin designing.” When getting started on a new remodeling project, it is important to Classic Remodeling that the client’s needs are upheld first and foremost. They try to make it as easy for the homeowners as they can. Because of the way Classic Remodeling is structured, the team is able to move seamlessly from design into construction. They have in-house craftsmen who are responsible for the construction phase of their projects which allows discussions early on to make sure the designs they have on paper are feasible. This is important in ensuring that expectations are explained and everyone is on the same page.

Built-In Bliss These homeowners opted for a completely customized media cabinet for both style and function.

he team at Coralberry Cottage has been providing beautiful, comfortable, custom furniture to Lowcountry homes for nearly a decade. The founders saw a lack of cottage style décor and were determined to fill that need. Over the past 10 years, the traditional English country roots that they started with have evolved, and Coralberry Cottage now operates with more coastal items, keeping pace with local architectural trends. Known for their slipcovered sofas, swivel gliders, and locally made wood furniture Coralberry Cottage has recently expanded their product line to carry the “built-ins that aren’t.”

According to store manager Rutledge Carter, the demand for built-in cabinetry, media centers, and breakfast nooks has been skyrocketing for 128 • CH+D • Winter 2021

years. The rise in demand eventually increased the price of what builders are charging for built-ins. Since you can’t take them with you when you move, it can be hit or miss with resale value depending on if the they’re the new buyer’s style or not. “Our idea has been to perfectly scale a piece of furniture to a space so it creates the feeling of being built-in but is completely portable,” explains Rutledge. “It often ends up being pretty competitively priced against contractor’s built-ins.” When the Coralberry crew begins working on this type of project, they start by seeking the full purpose of the piece. The size of the television was the starting point for the built-in that isn’t. “We wanted to fill the wall’s width while also drawing the eye to the tall ceiling, so the piece was designed with staggered heights, the shorter sides accommodating the slant in the ceiling,” adds Rutledge. “The homeowners also needed storage so the drawers were added and since the home didn’t have shiplap, we used this piece to incorporate the ever popular feature.” One of Coralberry Cottage’s owners, Liz Baker, is an architect, so that expertise is added to each project as well. When Liz gets involved, she creates a CAD drawing based off of the room’s measurements and design notes. The piece turned out to be three bases and three tops. It can be moved and rearranged to fit the homeowner’s needs or they can sell it if they move. French Quarter Dr. Eddie Irions fell in love with Charleston upon completing his training at MUSC, and a decade later, this stylish physician with a passion for his patients has settled into his stunning Historic Downtown Charleston home.

you know Dr. Eddie Irions, you know he has a keen eye for design that influences his personal style as well as his home in the French Quarter. You also know he is fiercely loyal to his family and friends, passionate about providing the best care to his patients, and eager to have a

positive impact on our world. When I first spoke with Eddie, we immediately bonded over our shared love of travel and New York City; and his home is evidence of those two things with pieces from all over the country as well as art collected from around the world. Eddie graciously welcomed Charleston Home + Design magazine into his home and into his life. We toured his French Quarter dwelling and talked about the art of medicine, home design, our love of Charleston, Eddie’s Memphis childhood, and more.

Eddie grew up in a very supportive, middle class, African American neighborhood. His parents were both educators and always encouraged him and his two sisters to be their best—no matter what they did, they should do it well. “My parents made it very clear they expected a lot from us,” Eddie voices. “They encouraged us to dream and empowered us to make our dreams come true.” According to Eddie, he was a good kid. “When my mom tells stories of me as a kid, thankfully she usually has a smile on her face, so it would appear she agrees.” He was an obedient child, disciplined, and always followed his parents direction and recalls, “I wasn’t one to push boundaries when it came to my parents; I was always curious and that same curiosity later motivated me to explore the world of medicine.” Eddie has very positive memories of his childhood which included, but were definitely not limited to, riding his big wheel up and down the street, playing with the 132 • CH+D • Winter 2021

kids in his neighborhood, and vacationing with his family. “We vacationed as a family almost every year and that’s likely why to this day I enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures.” As a teenager, Eddie remembers his time at a very competitive public high school. “It truly was an environment where each student was compelled to be his or her absolute best; I will forever be indebted to my parents and teachers—because they believed in me, I believed in myself.” Although most of Eddie’s memories seem to reside within the classroom, he was also an alto saxophonist in his high school’s band which led him to pursue music at Emory where he learned to play the oboe and clarinet; he was also a member of the university chorus. Laughingly, Eddie comments, “Let’s be clear—my voice sounds exponentially better when it’s among at least a hundred others.” That competitiveness he felt in high school,coupledwithhisparent’sinfluence, prepared Eddie for Emory University

where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology. “I remember when my father dropped me off at college he said, ‘Let them know there is an Irions in their midst.’ My parents always expected so much of us; they instilled a sense of integrity, pride and diligence which remains at my core—my mother and father simply wanted their children to be good people; my father wanted to raise a good man. In my humble opinion, to be called a ‘good person’ is the highest compliment of all.” While at Emory Eddie was elected President of the Student Government, became a principal investigator of research at The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and was accepted to both medical and business school before concluding his four years at Emory. With these achievements, Eddie fulfilled his father’s request of letting others know there was an “Irions in their midst.”

Paging Doctor Eddie

It wasn’t until the latter part of his undergraduate career at Emory that Eddie realized he wanted to be a doctor. As a student at a university which strongly embraced the liberal arts, Eddie was given the opportunity to explore innumerable career paths before committing to medicine. “Emory is a very health/science driven liberal arts institution so there was a persistent CH+D • Winter 2021 • 133

overtone of that from the very beginning. Truth be told, I sat for both the MCAT and GMAT and although it was not always a clear path, the stars aligned and being of service to others as a physician proved to be the best choice for me.”

comments, “It is a privilege to have been given the opportunity to acquire the skill set to serve as a doctor and I will never take it for granted. I am grateful Charleston welcomed me to be a part of this medical community and I will always give them my best.”

Med school, as expected, wasn’t easy. Eddie loves the world of academia; he has a passion for learning and the structure of it. “As a medical student I learned how to merge science with humility so I could give my best to those who trust me to care for them.” As the first doctor in his family, Eddie mentions he is grateful for the opportunity to even attend medical school. The often unexpected challenges that surfaced made Eddie work harder, and although not all students in his class graduated, he comments “failure simply wasn’t an option.”

As a gastroenterologist, Eddie hopes to change the statistic that black men, more than any other demographic, lose their lives to colon cancer. The recent passing of Chadwick Boseman, the talented actor best known for his portrayal of the superhero Black Panther, has reminded us of this truth who at the age of 43 lost the battle. Colorectal cancer disproportionately affects the Black community with the highest rate of any racial/ethnic group in the U.S. In fact, African Americans are about 20 percent more likely to get colorectal cancer and about 40 percent more likely to die from it as compared to other groups. The reasons for this disparity are complex but they largely reflect differences in risk factors and in health care access, both of which are related to socioeconomic status. Despite these challenges, Dr. Irions has committed his life to overcoming them for he believes “Perseverance and diligence mixed with humility, empathy, and kindness make all things possible.”

After completing his Internal Medicine residency in New York, Eddie decided to pursue a career in gastroenterology. Historically, persons of color have not been treated equally in medicine, and Eddie wanted an opportunity to help change that. “It is painful to accept our nation has not valued its citizen’s lives equally—far too often persons of color in these United States have been denied equal access to healthcare and that must change.” Eddie

Eddie continues to work toward changing these outcomes alongside his colleagues at Charleston GI where he is a partner; he joined the practice shortly after completing an advanced endoscopy fellowship at The Medical University of South Carolina in 2011.

From NYC to CHS

New York is a very special place for Eddie. He lived in the city for 11 years during a time when he was developing as a person. “I think that’s where I started to learn exactly who I am. I don’t know if it’s NYC or if it just hap-

pened to be where those things surfaced for me, but when I encounter challenges, my time in NYC has been a point of reference for me and it hasn’t failed me yet.” As many are aware there is a sense of accountability and integrity that one must maintain and as Eddie notes, if it’s compromised, it will “unapologetically never be forgiven.”

He loved encountering people and seeing the fashion world from an insider’s perspective.

A significant part of his stint in New York was spent juggling a job at Ralph Lauren while being a student and for years, fashion and medicine coexisted. “I’ve always gravitated towards some

After Eddie moved to Charleston he got a call that changed his life. “I’ll never forget this,” Eddie begins. “I was at a clinic in Mt. Pleasant and I got a call CH+D • Winter 2021 • 135

from one of the producers asking if I’d be willing to talk about a topic on Dr. Oz.” Initially, Eddie thought he was being considered among several doctors to do the segment. “I said ‘Thank you for the opportunity’ and the producer was like ‘No, we want to know dates you can come to film in New York.’ It was truly an opportunity I didn’t see coming.” And less than a month later, Eddie was New York bound to film at ABC Studios. When asked about his friend’s and family’s reaction, Eddie remembers, “One of complete disbelief. Not only was it their response, it was also mine.”

Charleston House Hunting

Believe it or not, when Eddie first moved to Charleston, because he knew very little about areas to possibly live, he focused his house hunt on the location of the Ralph Lauren store. After working for them for many years he knew all

too well how particular the real estate division of Ralph Lauren was in the process of opening a store, so if they chose to set up shop on King Street, that’s where Eddie wanted to be. When he initially came down, he rented a townhouse on Queen Street. At the time, Eddie didn’t realize he was right in the middle of it all. It quickly became quite clear he landed in a phenomenal, world-renowned city. The time came to purchase and Eddie chose to stay in his beloved neighborhood. “Once you discover how incredible Charleston is, it’s nearly impossible to leave,” Eddie adds. “You’re surrounded by kind people, beautiful landscapes, and the distinct Lowcountry culture—what’s not to love?” He felt at home in the French Quarter so he decided to purchase his first home in the historic Charleston district.

Historic Meets Modern

In 2011, Eddie stumbled upon his fabulous, historic abode in the French Quarter. “I truly loved the house the way it was,” he mentions. The house commands history and Eddie took his time discovering how to marry its history with his own style. “Like most homes in downtown Charleston, this house was here long before we were and it will be long after we’re gone. Recognizing that allows much needed clarity to surface. If possible, I think it’s best to preserve our city’s historic homes as they are.” Eddie recounts that it took nearly two years for him to furnish his home. Even the thought of picking out a sofa overwhelmed him—he was so busy with work and had little money to spare, so buying furniture wasn’t a priority. “My

friends knew I moved to Charleston and wanted to come visit but I was so embarrassed at the lack of furniture, I told them they couldn’t come...Well, they could but they didn’t because there was literally no place to sit.” His best friend from New York visited and despite disclosing there was not even a chair, immediately upon arrival he thought he had been robbed—so to say the house was barren is not an exaggeration. Now, almost ten years later, Eddie’s love for his home has only grown, especially since there are a few chairs and even a sofa. The innate character of the home is what initially drew Eddie in, for you can feel the tradition and history embedded in its walls. Eddie operates on the belief that “less is more” which is

French Quarter Eddie’s favorite room is the third floor bedroom facing St. Philip’s Church where the endearing church bells which ring from 8am to 8pm every quarter of an hour, are best heard. Eddie’s love of small, intimate spaces is part of the reason he finds this room so special. “Before the house was furnished, I had a boxspring and mattress in that room. I would go downstairs to the master bathroom because it had the nicest shower, and then I’d go to work,” he recalls. “The rest of the house was completely empty, so I guess I actually only needed about 50 square feet of living space; thankfully, I have evolved a bit since then.” In addition to his favorite room, Eddie also has a few favorite features. “The exposed brick and original floors have withstood the test of time; they’ve earned their right to be here and they need not be overlooked.”

why he wanted to focus on the character of the home. “When outfitting a historic home, the things you add to a space should not distract from what’s already there; furnishings and décor are meant to enhance and complement what already exists.” With the help of interior stylist, Natalie Naylor, Eddie created a space that is welcoming yet respectful of its history. His modern, simple, and functional style can be seen via the furniture and art that was purchased from a variety of places throughout Charleston, New York, Paris, and Los Angeles. “Spaces should be inviting and welcoming but also functional,” Eddie declares. In particular, the piece which welcomes you into the home is a historic wagon wheel from a Charleston carriage that sits in the foyer. “Natalie actually made that,” Eddie recalls. “It was at her home on Sullivan’s Island and it was her idea to bring it here.” The 3,600 square foot dwelling is three stories—kitchen, dining, and living spaces on the first floor with bedrooms on the top two floors. 138 • CH+D • Winter 2021

The master bedroom stays true to Eddie’s “less is more” philosophy. An iron canopy bedframe is paired with wood nightstands and a leather braided bench. A blue accent wall and plant provide additional color, and a neutral rug ties the vignette together.

As Eddie and his partner continue to grow in the home, they have exciting plans to enhance the living experience by expanding the entertainment area beyond the courtyard. “The next phase of the house is to further develop the outdoor space,” Eddie explains. And with the help and expertise of their architect Jeremy Kruska and developer James Schulze, multi level decks will soon be added. “I’m most excited about creating an outdoor space which is accessible and welcoming” he proclaims. Eddie’s love for his home is not just because of the structure itself but because of its surroundings. “I truly love my neighbors and community—we are all stewards of this magnificent city we are blessed to call home.”

Eddie’s Ode to Charleston

“I think we live in one of the most kind and dynamic cities in the world. The greatness of any city is solely defined by its inhabitants—Charleston is extraordinary because Charlestonians are extraordinary. No one can deny our city in and of itself is stunning, but the thing that makes Charleston spectacular are the people you encounter each and every day.” He continues, “There once was a time I considered relocating due to the challenges surrounding the Emanuel 9 tragedy, but the way Charleston united and gained strength rooted in love and compassion made it clear to me there’s no other place I’d want to call home.

ashley kegu An enjoyment of cooking and making people happy through food led Ashley Kegu, executive chef at Melfi’s, to pursue a career in the culinary world. She takes the same passion behind the food she cooks at Melfi’s, as the only female in the restaurant group, and uses it in the meals she cooks at her James Island home; each dish is prepared with purpose and a “woman’s touch” as Ashley says.

Ashley and her fiancé are both chefs so their meals at home are fairly simple. A chicken dish is a staple in their home. For our visit, Ashley prepared a whole roast chicken with pan gravy, kale, and mushrooms and let me tell you, it smelled fantastic.

Heavily influenced by his home town of El Paso, Texas John Lewis of Lewis Barbecue worked to create a new Lowcountry staple in Juan Luis. Though he’s tried a variety of cuisines, he always returns to his Texas roots and that is evident in not only his cooking, but also in his downtown home. Throughout his home, you’ll find a Southwestern flair in the different materials and décor pieces. Similar to how John prepares food for Juan Luis, he prefers to make anything he can from scratch for an authentic feel. He cooks the corn, dries it, soaks it, grinds in, and presses it into the tortillas. He also grinds the chips and flour himself. Nico romo Nico Romo of NICO Shem Creek and Bistronomy followed his brother’s footsteps and chased a career in the food world. He has perfected the French cuisine after not only practicing in France, but also learning from one of only 50 French Master Chefs in the United States, making him the youngest French Master Chef in South Carolina. In his James Island home, Nico shares his love of French cuisine with his wife and two young children. On our visit to the Romo household, Nico prepared flounder quenelle with nantua sauce and potato gratin. This wholesome French dish oozes creamy comfort flavors and is kid friendly as well.

greer gilchrist The family aspect surrounding cooking has always been important for Greer Gilchrist, co-owner and head chef of the Harbinger and Harken cafes. Cooking with her family as a kid is a tradition that gave Greer the confidence she needed in the kitchens at her restaurants and in her downtown home. Greer considers herself a very intuitive cook, and she used that intuition in preparing her pumpkin soup. Greer sources all of her items as locally as possible and since you eat with your eyes, it’s important to Greer, regardless of whether she’s cooking at the restaurant or in her own home, that the food is aesthetically pleasing. David SChuttenberg Eager to build on his palate, chef and owner of Kwei Fei David Schuttenberg studied Chinese cookbooks to learn the art of Sichuanese cuisine. He and his wife Tina journeyed from New York to Charleston to embark on their own food venture with Kwei Fei, and more recently with Micho, a commercial kitchen in a shipping container inspired by their love of Mexican food. Both cuisines are common meals in the Schuttenberg household. David has enlisted the help of Caroline Woodruff to enhance the cocktail menu at Kwei Fei. He and Tina also enjoy many of these cocktails, including the Chengdu Boulevardier, at home after a busy day at the restaurant.

As the Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams, Sue Wadden makes sure that the company stays completely up-todate on all things color related. Sue is active in the Color Marketing Group, the Color Association of the United States, Inter-Society Color Council, the American Society of Interior Design, and the Interior Design Society.
