MEET + GREET

Sunny Renovations

Betsy Kalman of The Summer House

After twenty years in the construction industry, Betsy Kalman has gained a knack for knowing how to turn homeowners into happy campers, whether they come to her with questions about countertops, solar panels, or organizing that pesky closet. We took a moment to chat with Betsy about her company, The Summer House.

What experience can homeowners expect when working with The Summer House? We offer four types of products: closet systems, hard-surface countertops, cabinetry, and solar panels. Each category is customizable, and we work in close conjunction with Kalman Construction from start to finish. Clients can expect an estimate of their query within five days, and every job can be completed within two weeks of our start date. What is your background in custom homebuilding? For nearly twenty years, I was the co-owner of Kalman Construction with my husband, Kevin. After that, I went back to school to earn my master’s degree in fine art, but I couldn’t stay away from my true passion of custom homebuilding for long. Do you have any advice for homeowners who are shopping specifically for solar panels? Panels can be connected to the homeowners’ electric service to provide power to the house during the daylight hours. Any excess power can be sold directly to the electric company. The home can also draw power from the electric service at

times when more is required. With tax credits of up to thiryfive percent, too, it’s something that all homeowners should definitely consider. For more information, call The Summer House at (843) 452-6634 or visit summerhousecharleston.com.

YOUR MONEY'S WORTH

Taking a Look at the Cost of

Hiring a Full-Service Moving Company

Making sure all breakables are wrapped securely, packing and labeling each box, lifting large furniture, and then lifting it again—relocating from one home to another is stressful. There is so much more to moving than just transporting your items, which is why The Pendergrass Moving Company, a locally owned business, seeks to assist clients by offering top-notch services.

Teamwork

Every move is different because every home is different, and sometimes even homeowners don't know the actual scope of their move. Not only do owners Mandi and Mark Pendergrass make sure that their teams arrive prepared to meet all kinds of lifting and storage needs, but they also require all employees be trained in various methods of handling furnishings.

Time Management

Time is the most elusive and precious commodity, so Mandi and Mark make sure they won’t be wasting a single minute of your day. Aside from the basic loading and unloading services, they offer packing and unpacking help, in-home moving assistance for those big pieces that need to find a new room, and even home staging if you’re selling your home.

Have Trucks, Will Travel

Don’t let the local ownership fool you; The Pendergrass Moving Company handles moves across the street or long distance. Regardless of the miles, all of your valuables are in good hands; the same highly-trained crew cares for your items throughout the entire process.

For more information, call The Pendergrass Moving Company at (843) 971-0919 or visit pendergrassmovingcompany.com.

1

Sullivan Custom Cabinets manufactures each piece of their custom cabinetry in their local facility on Oscar Johnson Drive. For their own kitchen, Kenneth and Tracy chose a “Crisp White” painted cabinet with a distressed black island for contrast. Above the counters are accent glass doors and a custom built-in hood for the stove. Each cabinet base has chic furniture style legs to add dimension, and the appliances are panelled to blend with the scheme of the room.

2

“Siena Bordeaux” granite emphasizes the overlay-style cabinetry in Kenneth and Tracy’s daughter’s bathroom. For a feminine touch, Kenneth added custom storage on either side of the counters. A “Crisp White” finish completes the look.

3

When designing the master bathroom, Tracy knew she wanted an ideal place to unwind after a long day. The cherry cabinets with a dark walnut stain bring a low-key vibe to the room's elegance. With shaker-style doors and custom storage towers on either side of the vanity, everything has its place, keeping clutter off of the beautiful “Botticino” marble counters. CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

THE CRAFTSMAN: Randy Wright of Century Glass

THE CRAFT: The Creation of Custom Glass Shower Enclosures

THE BACKSTORY: Century Glass has been serving South Carolina since 1991. Since this time, Randy Wright has been fullfilling the widespread need for high-quality shower doors in the Lowcountry.

THE PROCESS: On any given day, Randy enters the office with a coffee in one hand and a stack of orders in the other to the sound of greetings from all directions. The team in the workshop is already busy accepting the glass shipments and sorting the doors of each project for the next several days. When the time comes for a particular door to go to its permanent home, the guys remove the protective wrapping and place it on a backlit table, which props the glass up at an angle to help them inspect it for any imperfections. After Randy’s thorough inspection of the glass door, he clears it for the next step in the process: the Diamon-Fusion patented protective coating. It is vital during this step to apply the coating evenly and with a new, clean rag, or the coating may become compromised. Once dry, the door is moved to a large table in the center of the workshop, and the hardware is attached. With its Diamon-Fusion coating and hardware applied, the door is inspected again and is declared ready to make the journey to its forever home.

For more information, call Century Glass at (843) 614-4628 or visit centuryglasssc.com.

GREENHOUSE

Bugs Be Gone Pest control is a constant battle in the Lowcountry, and some of the most frightful pests are those horrid little bugs that have the ability to make outdoor living a nightmare— mosquitoes, gnats, and flies. Fortunately for Charleston homeowners, there is a natural remedy. Cedar oil is a nontoxic, environmentally friendly solution that is used in a misting form to repel mosquitoes. The aroma of cedar oil, when delivered at certain times throughout the day,

Put a Cork on It When considering hardwood floors, most people immediately think of oak, maple, or even bamboo, but one style often goes unmentioned—cork. Cork is a highly renewable source, able to grow to maturity in three to seven years. That’s nearly equivalent to bamboo’s regrowth rate, and like bamboo, harvesting doesn’t harm the source. Because it is created from the bark of cork trees, the style of the flooring is unique and altogether visually stimulating. Whether installed as planks or tiles, cork keeps its shape and is naturally resistant to rot, mold, and moisture. It is elegant, environmentally conscious, and very comfortable underfoot. interrupts the pests’ pheromone production and impairs their nervous systems. Even better, cedar oil doesn’t affect beneficial critters—like honeybees, butterflies, lizards, or toads—which help maintain the natural balance of the ecosystem. H2OME

All-Weather Friend Isn't it frustrating when your automatic sprinkler system comes on an hour after a rainstorm? Using QEI Security & Technology's TEQHoM interactive system, which can be controlled by a smartphone, tablet, or computer, homeowners can program their network to monitor the amount of rainfall throughout the day and coordinate when the irrigation system comes on. For example, if a homeowner’s irrigation system is linked with the home’s control system, he or she can choose certain settings to prevent watering the yard if there has been rainfall within the past 24 hours. Whether a homeowner is committed to saving the environment or saving money, the irrigation control system with QEI is a win-win option.

Siding with Style Homeowners today want exteriors that are high on curb appeal, yet low on maintenance. Celect Cellular Exterior siding by Royal Building Products is an example of an intelligent design solution to several major problems that plague homeowners: aesthetics, durability, and long-term upkeep. Celect is a cladding solution made of cellular PVC, an innovative technology that prevents air and moisture penetration in high-humidity environments. Plus, the material won’t rot, crack, or peel. Instead of butting together like typical siding, it snaps together with an interlocking joint system for a seamless design and a 130-mile-per-hour windresistance ability. Eco-friendly bonus? The siding’s “Kynar Aquatec”coating offers superior UV resistance and reflects sunlight, making heating and air conditioning less energy demanding. For More Information:

ASK THE EXPERTS

Steve Hodge

KBRS MicroFactory

Kathy McKay

McKay Insurance

How does KBRS MicroFactory’s product protect homeowners from potential leaks in the shower?

What advantage can you offer a homeowner as an independent insurance provider that a direct writer cannot?

“Everything that sits between the framing and the tile that homeowners see is considered a shower substrate. Most showers are still built via the outdated method of creating a mud bed, which is basically a layer of concrete under the tile. This layer between the subfloor and the tile often creates more problems than it solves, such as water retention, mold, mildew, rot, and allergies. KBRS MicroFactory has fabricated a seamless shower substrate created with a marine-grade material that prevents leaks and costly repairs that often require the removal of everything down to the studs. ”

“As independent, Trusted Choice agents, we represent various insurance companies. When a homeowner requests a quote, we assess the home and the risk of coverage, then match the overall evaluation with the best market options that meet the homeowners needs and the conditions of the home at the best price. Direct writers can only obtain prices and policies from one source, and their options are less flexible to meet the specific needs of homeowners.”

For more information, call KBRS MicroFactory at (843) 784-3218 or visit kbrsmicrofactory.com.

For more information, call McKay Insurance at (843) 881-2229 or visit restinsuredcharleston.com.

Todd O'Neill

Royal Building Products Why should homeowners consider cellular PVC siding? “The market has a lot of options right now, and the trend is leaning toward sturdier, heavier materials. Vinyl siding is very light. Cellular PVC is the best of both worlds because it has the advantages of a more solid material, but offers the light weight of vinyl. Plus, PVC doesn’t retain moisture, therefore it won’t rot, crack, split, or mold. In a coastal environment, most other products don’t provide total coverage like that. We offer Celect® Cellular PVC siding in 18 prefinished colors that all have a 25-year fade warranty and a lifetime product warranty.”

Salute to Structure

Creating Hardscapes

The Space Between

The best courtyards incorporate varying layers. For example, here, you’ll find plants directly in the ground, in a raised garden bed, and in different-sized potters.

A solid surface in the yard can be a great alternative to grass, especially if your home is on a lot with sandy soil.

It can be a challenge to know what to do with the patch between your house and a detached garage. Tall grassy plants work especially well here.

For more information, call DIG Landscapes at (843) 327-4372 or visit diglandscape.net.

Healthy Arbor

Termite Test

Frequent Fertilization

Healthy trees equal serious curb appeal. Make sure your trunks are inspected for fungus regularly and your branches are trimmed as they grow.

Your home isn’t the only potential victim of termites—your trees can become infested too! Treat them frequently to prevent irreparable damage.

Keeping your trees fertilized will help to maintain their health during the winter months.

For more information, call Schneider Tree Care at (843) 300-5200 or visit schneidertree.com.

Sweet and Tart

Ornamental grasses that are reminiscent of sand dunes bring the feel of the beach to the backyard—even if your property isn't oceanfront.

Pine straw looks great and helps to lock moisture into the soil, providing plenty of hydration to surrounding plants.

Citrus trees grow surprisingly well in Charleston’s sunny climate, but be patient. It takes a citrus tree at least two years to bear fruit.

Lasting LEDs

Lights placed at the base of a tree or plant illuminate upward into the branches or fronds.

Your home isn’t the only structure that needs lighting— show off your yard, too!

Most outdoor lighting utilizes LED bulbs, which use considerably less energy and last longer than traditional options.

Building Blocks

Company: CB Murray Construction Credentials: Brad began his career in the early 1990s working as a roofer and digging foundations. Over many years on jobsites, he learned the ins and outs of every phase in the building process. He worked as a construction manager for large commercial projects (like the Charleston International Airport), and in 2007, he started his own company.

What was the scope of this Hanahan remodel? When the homeowners purchased the circa-1970s home last year, the house was actually uninhabitable because of a faulty foundation and the rough condition of the interior. The house had a 14-inch drop from the front to the back. Our team secured the foundation below the home, raised the house, and redesigned the interior to take advantage of the waterfront views by adding 22 new impact-resistant windows. We also refurbished the original brick from the home and reinstalled it. For the outdoor-living area, we added a new dock with a boatlift, restructured the seawalls, landscaped, hardscaped, and installed a gunite swimming pool.

What were the homeowners’ requests for their master bathroom? They wanted a master bathroom with a large walk-in shower, vanities with his-and-her elements, and two closets. We outlined the shower in ceramic tile and installed a frameless glass door. Our interior designer was able to transform the bathroom to add two spacious walk-in closets and a double vanity. The homeowners are from Texas, so our team created functional saloon doors leading to their water closet.

What was the goal for the front entryway? We designed the entry to reflect the homeowners’ desire to entertain family and friends in a warm and inviting Lowcountry environment. The hurricane-rated front door, although glass, acts to provide privacy. The homeowners can view guests upon arrival, but the guests cannot see inside the home. We preserved the original brick, updated the Southern-style columns, and added copper gas lanterns. Architects + Archetypes

Company: TMD Architects Credentials: Trevor earned his bachelor of architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2003 and spent the next several years in Washington D.C. working in his field of study and quickly advancing in the trade. In 2009, He began his own firm here in Charleston to concentrate on his passion for creating beautiful structures.

What challenges did you face during the design and construction of this particular project? This lot had an existing home; previous additions and associated plumbing issues initiated the clients to contact us in order to design additional renovations. Then, we learned the house was below the flood zone established by FEMA, so the homeowners were inclined to elevate the existing home. As we communicated with local government agencies, it became more cost effective to rebuild.

Why is it important to have an architect involved in building projects? This home had more challenges than most projects, but it is an excellent example of how an architect can help a homeowner navigate the complex layers of federal and local governments and neighborhood reviews. Throughout the process, we communicated with the county, the Town of James Island, and the homeowner association. Our eventual conclusion was to start from scratch.

Which part of the design of this home do you find most alluring? It was rewarding to be able to maintain the aspects of the original home that the homeowners loved. At the same time, we took the opportunity to improve on portions of the house that were less than ideal for the couple’s needs. We added features that will allow them to stay in the home long-term, including an elevator, curbless showers, and wide passageways. The materials and construction methods were also designed to be highly efficient and require minimal maintenance. Inspired Interiors

Designer: Melissa Hunter

What is the homeowner’s style, and how did you bring that look into the design of this home? In the past, the homeowner had a very traditional style, and she sought to change to a transitional look with a coastal feel. We had some existing pieces that she wanted to keep, so it was my job to update them with fabrics, lighting, bedding, and artwork.

What was the goal for the master bedroom? The homeowner requested functioning draperies to be able to keep all the sunlight out of the room (when needed), but she didn’t want the fabric to have a heavy look. The house is on the water, so I wanted to bring the outside in—even when the drapes were closed. We chose a fabric that had large palm leaves with colors that complement the hues of the neighboring creek.

What is your favorite feature of this home? The varying levels. When guests walk in the front door, they are welcomed by a beautiful foyer that leads a few steps down into the living area (which also has a couple of steps down to the gorgeous dining room) or through a set of French doors that open to the family room and kitchen. In the foyer, there is also the option to take a couple of steps up to the master and guest bedrooms. The multiple levels are really great architectural details of the home.

What advice do you have for homeowners just beginning a project? My advice is to look through magazines, go on Pinterest and Houzz, and find what excites them. It makes it easier for an interior designer to have some sort of starting point, even if it’s simply a favorite furniture style or color scheme. Modern Innovation, Necessary Collaboration

Story by Megan J. Busch • Photography by Margaret Rambo

Rarely does the Lowcountry see a home that exudes modernity; one brand-new Hollywood house, simply known as River’s End, exhibits a stark, contemporary style.

CH+D • Winter 2016

PROJECT FILES

(above) Talented masons constructed the three-sided brick wood-burning fireplace by hand, just as it was done a hundred years ago. It works to provide heat to the porch area, the living room, and the kitchen. As a bonus, the building team installed a pizza oven, a favorite feature of the homeowners. (right page) Modern features, like large angled windows and cable railing, add to the home’s contemporary feel.

I

n southeastern Pennsylvania 20 years ago, Johanna and Ted Swinnerton built their first modern-style home—a very updated rendition of the traditional barn house. When the time came to move to the South, they brought this same modernized look to the Lowcountry with a restructured plantation house entitled River’s End. The architect for both homes, Christopher Moomaw, describes, “Johanna and Ted wanted a contemporary house, and the idea for it came to me—this house would be a restatement of the iconic Southern plantation home with columns, verandas, and the whole structure lifted up above the ground.” The home stands on a hundred-acre wooded lot as the epitome of a twenty-first century plantation.

98

CH+D • Winter 2016

Approaching both the architect and the local builder Phillip Smith of Phillip W. Smith General Contractor, the Swinnertons’ desires were clear. Not only did they want a contemporary style, but they also required a vast amount of natural light (a beloved feature of their Pennsylvania home) and energy efficiency. Phillip explains, “They wanted as much light as they could possibly get in order to bring a lot of warmth into the house.” So the team installed floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides of the living room, enabling the Swinnertons to take in the sunshine and the beautiful views of the marsh beyond. The first concerns for Lowcountry residents considering glass walls are energy efficiency during the swelter-

ing summers and storm protection during the hurricane season. Phillip and Christopher worked together to combat these issues. Considering the heavily wooded and shaded lot, energy-efficiency was most important for keeping the home warm in the winter. “To offset any energy that may be lost from the windows,” Phillip details, “we put a geothermal energy system in the house. We used Andersen A-Series windows, which are impact-resistant and energy saving.” The team also installed a three-sided, wood-burning fireplace to provide natural warmth for the living room, kitchen, and porch. Bringing such a unique home together required a great deal of collaboration. Phillip worked with Christopher and the Swinnertons for three to four

months, honing the design and perfecting the engineering of the structure before construction began. ever Mrs. Baker and I started brainstorming about her closet, what was most important to her was for it to be breathtaking and stunning like the rest of her home. She wanted to have a sanctuary to relax and get ready.” To make this vision a reality, Elizabeth partnered with Steve Rogers of California Closets, a company that specializes in customizable closet systems. The trio—Vickie, Steve, and Elizabeth—set out to design a func-

tional storage system and organize the Baker matriarch’s clothes and accessories. They were literally transforming a room into a closet, so many big decisions had to be made. Most notably, the team had to decide what to do with the guest room’s windows. Solid walls provide valuable storage space, but large windows offer ample natural light in a room. For this portion, Vickie and Elizabeth were

happy to be working with Steve, whose 3-D technology allowed the girls to see exactly what the room would look like with the windows covered, uncovered, and then finally recovered again during the decision-making period. Elizabeth notes, “The beauty of this entire project was that trial-and-error process, which allowed us to make it perfect.” Steve installed the structural details, complete with shelves and drawers, CH+D • Winter 2016

as well as a few extras that heighten the room’s organizational capabilities. “The hanging portion of the closet is 24-inches deep, which allows all the clothing to hang completely within the cabinetry. The vertical panels are one-inch thick to add a more solid look to the closet; they’re topped with lift-up display-style cabinets and crown moulding. We included ample lighting, all controlled by a motion sensor, to make up for the light lost from the windows.” For the accessories—jewelry, sunglasses, belts, and scarves—Steve incorporated felt-lined drawers with layered inserts and pullout scarf and belt racks.

ooking out the living-room window, the homeowners of this downtown condo can survey one of the most picturesque landscapes in Charleston—Waterfront Park set in front of the harbor, Castle Pinkney, and Patriot’s Point. Peeking out the other side of their abode, the city’s steeple-filled skyline stands regally. The interior décor mimics the surrounding beauty, incorporating rich textures, neutral color schemes, and metallic accents. French expatriate and interior designer MarieLaure Kosian, Allied ASID of ML Design describes, “The homeowners wanted something that was fresh and bright with a mid-century and European look.” To achieve this, MarieLaure punctuated each room with an appropriate light fixture fitting the homeowners’ desired style. She continues, “The lighting is very mid-cen-

tury, and that’s why we picked each fixture. They look like the 1950s, and the other furnishings we chose are the style of that era.” The motif carries throughout the whole space, giving a unified feel to the condo. Light fixtures represent the jewelry of the home. For those finishing touches, Marie-Laure chose one of her local favorites—Circa Lighting—to shop, touting its high-end options and its convenience (Circa has a showroom downtown and offers an approval process to try a fixture out in a room before purchasing). Acacia Lohman of Circa Lighting notes, “In the showroom, we try to represent five to ten percent of our 5,000 offerings. We carry over fifteen designers, including Aerin Lauder, EF Chapman, Barbara Barry, and Ralph Lauren.” Acacia adds that the vast number of products

and lines allows homeowners and designers to shop at one place for an entire project without the house looking too “matchy-matchy.” Since the pieces are manufactured at one place, though, all of the finishes between the various lines are complementary and harmonious. Outfitting a whole home or condo seamlessly is no easy task, and it’s one that Acacia recommends using a designer to tackle. The best plan for approaching a lighting package is to begin with the plans, figuring how many fixtures are needed and understanding the electrical components of the home. Then, there are three questions to consider: What style, what finishes, and what budget? From there, either an interior designer or one of the ALA-certified lighting specialists at Circa will narrow down the choices,

selecting three options for each space. This makes the decision-making process easier; rather than trying to choose the best option from a group of thousands, homeowners simply select from small samples tailored to their styles and budgets. A combination of bold statement pieces and simple fixtures brings the design of the whole house together cohesively. The Waterfront Park condo indeed looks unified; each fixture illuminates the intricate details of Marie-Laure’s design. Dominique Verona, Circa’s showroom manager, concludes, “The fixtures finish a room. In this home, they supplement Marie-Laure’s aesthetics—her fabric, her textures, her furnishings, and every little detail. Tommy offered an idea; he told them, “Sometimes tearing down an existing home and rebuilding is more economical than remodeling.” This completely changed the Turners’ perspective. “Once we widened our scope to include lots with existing homes, everything else fell right into place,” Raymond says. As an added bonus, the old house on their James Island lot actually depreciated the value of the property. They

partnered with Tommy to construct their new home on the land. From there, it was a relatively painless process of donating the pieces of the original home to Habitat for Humanity. Habitat sent a team to remove everything from the flooring and the wiring to the light fixtures and the windows at no cost to the homeowners. Once everything was gone, it was time to concentrate on the new

structure. “Raymond and Magda expressed how they wanted a smooth transition from the inside to the outside of their home without stairs or raised foundations,” expounds Tommy. So Tommy created the house to sit just above the required flood elevation. There is so much living to do outdoors that they knew they wanted to take full advantage of the Lowcountry’s extensive season. The big deciding factor in the process—one that most people don’t even know to consider—was Charleston’s location along a fault line. In fact, there are anywhere from 20 to 50 earthquake tremors here every year, but they’re so small that no one notices. Inside the cheery Sullivan’s Island home of Natalia Castillo, coastal fashionista, sharp businesswoman, island inhabitant, and purveyor of the Escapada Living clothing line. Story by Megan J. Busch | Photography by Patrick Brickman & Margaret Rambo

I’ve walked into my mom’s closet and surveyed her meticulously curated collection more times than I can count. At one point in my life (namely my teenage years), I never would have imagined wanting to wear anything in that room. Now, I don’t dress too differently from my mother, and borrowing (or, let’s be honest, taking is the right word here) her clothes is a regular occurrence. One shirt is my favorite—an Escapada Living blue-and-green flowing top. Its vivid hues automatically stood out among the rest of my mom’s hanging shirts and immediately brought a smile to my face. This scenario of mine is precisely the goal of Natalia Castillo, owner of Escapada Living. She says, “It’s those bright colors. They make you happy. That’s the Escapada philosophy—a joyful life spent connected to friends, family, and the community. I want to create ageless, timeless, fun products that a grandmother, mother, and daughter can wear and share.” The unique brand proves to offer just that, and each fabric and every stitch seem to reflect the vibrant life of Natalia. After deviating from her path to medical school, working for years in the fashion industry, and traveling the world, the remarkable businesswoman found her niche in Charleston—specifically, Sullivan’s Island. Natalia invited me and the Charleston Home + Design team to her coastal home to share her story of developing the Escapada Living line and settling into a Lowcountry lifestyle.

(right) The other guest room boasts bright blue tones and an original work by artist Karen O’Neil. (below) Natalia had a long list of local shopping spots for her home décor. Some of her favorites? GDC Home, South of Market, Celadon, Circa Lighting, Candelabra, Lyndon and Leigh, and West Elm.

I never imagined I would be chatting with the designer responsible for some of my favorite items in my wardrobe. How did you begin your career in fashion? Well, this is not what I thought I would be doing with my life. I went to Emory University, and I was going to become a doctor. I actually love science, but I knew that it was never my passion. By the time I realized I wanted to pursue business, it was too late. I would have had to spend another year in college getting a business degree. So I just stayed on my planned track. I applied to medical school, took the MCAT, and did the interviews. I didn’t get into medical school, but I never really wanted to go.

After I graduated, my mom said, “You have to get a job.” I was searching through the newspaper, and there was a huge ad for the Macy’s Training Program. I had worked at The Limited in high school for two years, so I thought, I’m just going to apply for this job. I interviewed, and they offered me a position. I didn’t really think it was what I wanted to do, but I needed the paycheck. I totally fell in love with it. It was such a great program, I met so many wonderful people, and I had so much fun. It was a lot of hard work, but it ultimately prepared me for everything I’m doing today. After several years and promotions, I became a buyer for the Macy’s juniors’ collection department in Atlanta. It felt like a dream job. I had a lot of free-

dom, and I literally got to be an entrepreneur and curate my own assortment for the juniors’ department. They would fly me to Los Angeles and New York to go shopping. I would have done it for free [laughs]. What made you eventually stray away from this amazing position? One of my vendors was Esprit, and I traveled to San Francisco for the first time to meet with them. On that trip, Esprit chartered a luxury yacht to take out some of their buyers—it was a rough life [laughs]. At that moment in time, I was like, This is where I’m moving. There was no question in my mind. I had never been anywhere that was more beautiful. I returned to Atlanta to give my twoweek notice at Macy’s. I didn’t have a job in San Francisco, but I knew I could figure out something. My boss said to me, “Don’t quit. Let me transfer you there.” I thought, Even better. Soon after, they closed the Atlanta corporate location, and that same boss moved to San Fran-

cisco and became my boss there. I still had the dream job and the dream boss, all while living in my dream city. I loved it. However, I was living in California, but also spending about ten days a month in New York. That was good for a while, but after two years, I finally thought, You know what? I’m working really hard, and I’m spending a lot of time away from home. If I’m going to work this hard, I want to have my own business. Is that when you jumped into your first clothing line, Key Lime Pie? Actually, at that time, I wanted to open a wine-and-cheese bar in San Francisco. I knew nothing about that industry. I knew I loved to drink wine, and I loved to eat cheese. I figured that’s all I needed to know [laughs]. So, the Friday before I resigned from the department store, I ran into one of the manufacturers of a line I bought for Macy’s—Neil Zussman—and told him I

wanted to open a wine-and-cheese shop. He said, “That’s such a great idea; I want to back you financially.” I was so elated. I had planned to travel for a few weeks before I began this venture, and he asked me to meet him in Europe the next week because he would be there. I flew to Copenhagen and met Neil the next weekend. Then, my trip extended, and we traveled around the world together for five weeks. We ended up going to Bali, and we visited his factories in central Java. I decided that this type of life was amazing. I didn’t want to work; I just wanted to travel. So I traveled with him for about a year and a half. We went all over the world. Eventually, I ran out of money—I had none left. So again, my mom said, “You have to get a job.” Then Neil said, “Why don’t you come work with me? You can start a division of my company.” I really had no choice. I didn’t want to go back to corporate America, and I didn’t have any money. I thought, What the heck? Why

not? I went into business with him, we became partners, and I started the division called Key Lime Pie. What was that first Key Lime Pie collection like, and how did you know what to do in the design process? Well, Neil and I had planned a trip to Indonesia for Thanksgiving, and while I was there, I literally threw together a collection. I had done a lot of product development for Macy’s, so I knew how to put together a collection. But I knew nothing about patterns and fit. My first production was kind of a mess. All my dresses had asymmetrical

hems because I didn’t know how to make a pattern. It didn’t seem to matter; everything sold. Many of my former coworkers had left Macy’s to go work for other department stores, so I was able to call them and get my product placed immediately. I had amazing connections. That’s how I took off in this business—through the connections I had at Macy’s. I built Key Lime Pie successfully from there and ran it for five years. This line stayed in production from 1995 until the new millennium, but you didn’t begin Escapada Living until 2009. How did you spend your time in between?

When I left the Key Lime Pie line, I had a non-compete with Neil’s company for a year, so I went back to Macy’s to work with my same former boss. After eight months there, I started Paradiso on my own. How was Paradiso different from what you’re doing today with Escapada Living? Paradiso was a collection of coordinating items, whereas Escapada features more versatile pieces. For Paradiso, we sold everything in outfits—a matching jacket, top, and bottom. At the time, that’s what people wanted, and we would almost always sell at least two pieces together.

(above) Off the master bedroom is a sunroom with nearly 360-degrees of coastal views and an abstract orange-and-white painting above Natalia’s green mid-century modern chest.

The prints were less preppy than Escapada’s, and Paradiso was geared toward an older demographic. I did a lot of embellishments, beading, and embroidery. Escapada is a lot cleaner and simpler. Escapada is unique, too, in that the boutiques that order from you in bulk can tailor your items to their clientele. How are you able to offer this? Yes, our wholesale customers can order any style of clothing in any print we have to fit their needs. For example, a contemporary store can select the contemporary styles and prints, and a traditional store may opt for more solids and simpler cuts. We own our own factory in Java, which gives us a huge advantage because we’re able to produce 3,600 combinations of colors and prints. It allows us to have options for a wide range of customers.

128

CH+D • Winter 2016

How do you balance running the different branches of the company— the factory in Java, your signature store here in Mt. Pleasant, plus your e-commerce site? I spend a lot of time in meetings, completing strategic work with my managers and talking about issues and tactics to build the business. I have great employees who take care of so many different things for me. Our factory is over 40 hours away from here; I actually haven’t traveled there since I started the business. I’m working with the same team I’ve worked with for 17 years. I know the people there, and I trust them. I have an amazing production manager, Andrew, who lives in central Java with his son. I talk to him every night on Skype to stay up-to-date with production. Bless his heart; central Java is not an easy place to live. It’s in a third-

world country, but you know what? He absolutely loves it. He’s such a kind, caring person. We have an orphanage that we support in Indonesia, and he’s so passionate about it. It brings him so much joy and happiness to be involved in it, to be able to support those kids, and to enrich their lives. It seems like you’re striving to really insert your company into the community of Java and make a difference there. Absolutely. So much of our business is about community, collaboration, and philanthropy. We’re in the process of rebranding to bring these ideas more to the forefront of the business. Retail is changing so quickly, and people are no longer going to a store just to shop. We have to give them a compelling reason to come in and spend money. In the spring, we’ll be transitioning into expe-

riential shopping. We’re going to create a concept shop that will be more than clothing. I don’t want to say too much yet, but it’s going to be a place that’s enjoyable, that’s about community, and that’s about giving back. We want the Escapada brand to relay connection to family, community, and philanthropy. The combination of all of that will be the new image. What’s the goal for Escapada through this new branding? We just want to take it to a new level. We still intend to be true to our core customer and continue to offer classic, preppy, ageless, timeless products. I feel like the future is in collaborations. I’ve been meeting so many cool and interesting people to figure out how we can work together and create new experiences for our customers and the community. I really want to develop a

50-million-dollar brand. My goals are to expand to a lot more stores and grow our e-commerce business. There are just endless opportunities, not only with clothing, but other lifestyle categories, like home products. I’m sure that a future home collection would fit right in with the style of your own home on Sullivan’s Island. What was the process like of redesigning the Lowcountry house you purchased in 2015? I worked with an interior designer— Nathalie Naylor. I met her through a mutual friend, and she helped me design the Escapada signature store in Mt. Pleasant. She is amazing. I love working with her; I can’t imagine working with a better designer. I wanted a bright white canvas and pops of vibrant colors. If you can’t tell by the clothing

line, I love bright, saturated hues. That’s what I wanted in my house. There were so many choices to make, and Nathalie helped me pick out the perfect pieces for all of the rooms. She deserves a lot of credit because she worked very hard helping me to pull it together. I would really recommend partnering with someone like Nathalie because it saved me from making a lot of mistakes. I was going to choose marble countertops for the kitchen, and she said, “Don’t do marble.” She installed marble in her kitchen, and she had so many problems with damage from red wine, sweet tea, and lemon juice. She said it was high maintenance and not to do it. She was able to save me money and future headaches. Instead, I opted for something that looks like marble, but has the benefits of granite.

The living room is bright and airy, full of windows to let in the Sullivan’s Island sunshine.

To decorate, did you incorporate any pieces from the home you once had in San Francisco and the vacation house you had on Isle of Palms? All of the furniture and accessories are actually new, so Nathalie and I had a lot of work to do. My style has totally changed. When I lived in San Francisco, my place was more urban. When I had my house on Isle of Palms, it was a traditional beach house. This is more contemporary and bright, so there is no way my old furniture would have worked in this house. It would have been out of place. Luckily, the person who bought my old house also bought everything in it. I just had to move my clothes and some pictures. It was the easiest move. In your real-estate search, why did you choose this home on Sullivan’s Island? Before I bought, I had been looking for a house for a year and a half. I made offers on three different houses that fell

130

CH+D • Winter 2016

through for various reasons (thank goodness, because they didn’t compare to what I have here). As soon as I saw the pictures, I knew this was my house. I made an offer the first day, and there were five other offers in the first weekend. I told my realtor, “Do not let me lose this house.” I made an offer over the asking price, and the sellers took it. It’s my dream house, and I feel like I’m on vacation when I’m at home. I wanted a retreat where I could literally escape to a place that’s quiet and peaceful. For me, it’s heaven. I can’t imagine a house that I could love more than this one. I feel so fortunate. It’s not just fortune, though. You’ve put in many hours of hard work to become the successful businesswoman you are today. What advice would you give to those wanting to take a similar path? My advice would be to always trust your gut. When I don’t, that’s when I make

mistakes. There are so many ways to start and run a business. Just like designing a house, there are endless options, and people will tell you different ways to do things. It’s most important to listen to your instincts. Bottom line— follow your gut. ❉

Turning Heads One native Upstate couple vows to build a forever home in Mt. Pleasant after seeing the local side of Charleston.

L

ynn and Paul Turner have built a total of five houses over the course of their marriage and across several southeastern states. For many years, they called Raleigh their home before moving to Birmingham. But it wasn’t until after their son moved away to pursue career opportunities in Charleston that they discovered what he called “the real Charleston”—the local side of Charleston that residents know and love. Soon, they were visiting frequently and falling more and more in love with the city, the water, and the lifestyle. “It didn’t take long for us to decide we had to retire here,” declares Paul.

134

CH+D • Winter 2016

“We didn’t want to build again, though,” adds Lynn. “We’ve built so many times, and it was always such a production. So we chose to buy instead.” What they didn’t know was how hard it would be to find just the right home in just the right place. With such a hot market and everything being snatched up as soon as it’s listed, out-of-towners like the Turners are often left in the lurch. Lynn recalls, “We were determined to end up in I’On.” As it turns out, something they hadn’t dreamt for themselves was just around the corner. Throughout their quest to find a home, the

couple kept returning to Hibben, a neighborhood in the Belle Hall area of Mt. Pleasant. There they met their future builder, Allen Coleman of Coleman Builders. “We had an immediate connection. He went to Clemson—my alma mater,” Paul explains. “Plus he grew up in the Upstate, not far from where I’m from. He was ready to talk to us about what we were looking for and how he could help. Everything he said changed our minds about building.” Beginning that day, an enduring family friendship bloomed before the Turners even laid the first brick. Nothing was built on the marsh at that time, and the only requirement Lynn

had for their lot was that it needed a live oak. Once she found the beautiful tree that now accents the front of the house, everyone got to work. The Turners relied on Allen more than any other builder they’ve worked with for subcontractor recommendations and advice, since they were still living in Birmingham at the time. “The most we did at the start was draw out about 60-percent of the floor plans and then take them to our

architect, Phil Clarke, for advice, touchups, and approval,” states Lynn. As an interior designer with her own business, Lynn took it from there. She designed the whole interior from top to bottom—even Paul’s man cave has the professional stylization of a designer. “She let me pick out the pieces that went in the room, but that was it,” he laughs. The spectacular thing about

the house is that not one room looks like the next, yet everything meshes into an eclectic, synchronous whole. Whether they’re drawing floor plans or decorating with chic French textures, vintage magazine covers, bright pops of color in a beach themed room, or Lynn's countless flea-market finds, the two Turners can certainly pull together a flawless dwelling. ✥

or decades, David and Mary Allen toted their three girls to the Carolina shore, specifically to the chicly rugged beach of Seabrook Island. The place always magnetically drew them back, and over time, it became more akin to a second home than a vacation destination. As the Allen parents reached retirement, the island was the only logical location for them to settle. David remarks, “Our three daughters grew up knowing Seabrook Island. Now, they’ve moved to various locales around the country, but Seabrook is a place that they love to come to; it attracts them back. From a parent’s perspective, that’s a great thing.” With the setting established, the Allens started to envision their home as both a permanent residence for themselves and a welcomed retreat for their oft-visiting daughters. They located a lot overlooking the Kiawah River. The Allens’ architect, Bill Huey of Bill Huey + Associates

rd Co. designed William C. Pritcha ry. et the kitchen cabin

explains that it may, indeed, be his favorite lot on the island. Bill recalls, “The Allens and I toured the property together in its natural state before any construction began. When I got out here, I realized how special this spot is.” What makes the land unique is a combination of the vast wildlife on that part of the island and the views, which not only include the Kiawah River, but also the Atlantic Ocean and the southernmost tip of Kiawah Island. Like most island homes, the Allen residence was designed to enhance the breathtaking vistas. However, David and Mary—in partnership with Bill—took this idea a step further and developed a reverse plan, meaning that all the living spaces are located on the second floor. The Allens also chose to place their master bedroom on the upper story. “The views are incrementally better as you get higher,” Bill explains. “You can get glimpses of the ocean from the second floor. The unique challenge with a reverse plan like this one is in the math. The square footage of all the public spaces, plus the master bedroom, is stacked on top of just a few bedrooms. We decided to create large porches on the first floor under heated space above to allow for the top-heavy square footage.” These porches—such as the screen room with large fireplace and cozy couch—serve as ideal spots for relaxing or entertaining.

Mary uses this antique loom to create her own fabric.

The Allens next interviewed several builders, finally finding their match in Rick Aldrich of Aldrich Incorporated. Mary has nothing but praises to sing of his work. She laughs as she remembers, “I have to give Rick a lot of credit. I come up with things sometimes, and I want things changed sometimes. I’ll suddenly want a new window here or there. Rick definitely had a cando attitude about it. He came through on everything we asked for.” Rick ensured that each aspect of Bill’s plan was carried out exactly as it should be and worked with him to incorporate Mary’s new ideas along the way. One of the most important conversations that Mary and David had with Rick was about the building materials. The Allens wanted the house to require minimal maintenance and to be safe during hurricane season. For this, Rick turned to two of his suppliers—Buck Lumber and Carolina Machine Finishing. Buck Lumber provided a variety of materials designed for longevity, including BossWood treated exterior trim, Andersen impactresistant windows and doors, coated pine porch ceilings, fiberglass columns, and stainless-steel cable railing. The siding also touts endurance alongside its beauty. Each fiber-cement shingle has been sealed via the Carolina Machine Finishing encapsulation process. Rick Jackson, proprietor of Carolina Machine Finishing explains, “We take interior and exterior building materials and run them through a machine in a horizontal plane. Each piece is coated on all six sides by a waterfall coating process to fully encapsulate it.” The coated pieces repel moisture and protect the underlying material.

The Allens are convinced that they could not have had such a great outcome if it were not for the partnership formed between each person and company who worked on the house. “I’ve heard stories of people going through this building process, saying, ‘Oh my goodness! The best thing you could do is hire a lawyer,”’ David notes. “Nothing is further from the truth. We’re very fortunate that we had a team that worked well together to ensure that we got what we really wanted.” The assembly of knowledgeable minds coming together enabled the Allens to transform their nostalgic vacation spot into their full-time residence. And their daughters? They can’t stay away from the peaceful slice of paradise, making Mary and David two very contented parents.

For the interior, Mary sought a different kind of longevity— timeless style. A designer by trade, she had a specific vision for each room. “I wanted to stay true to classic finishes that would stand the test of time,” she reveals. “In thirty years, the countertops and flooring should still be appealing. I was also incorporating items from our previous home, so we didn't venture too far beyond our classic look.” To bring the interior design together, Mary employed muted colors and subtle details, like the simple, yet elegant poplar crown moulding. Using classic finishes and antique accents, Mary fabricated a timeless style throughout the home.

CH+D • Winter 2016

Bobbi Jo Engelby • Domain Interiors & Design THE CHALLENGE: The homeowners, Ed and Tracy Marinaro, who moved from Los Angeles, had an edgy style that they wanted to blend with Charleston’s coastal style. THE SOLUTION: Using multiple textures (like velvet, burl wood, lacquer, silk, and bamboo) in combination with modern art and mid-century furniture creates a coastal feel with a modern edge. KEEPING IT

Shannon Bogan • S. Bogan Designs THE CHALLENGE: Achieving symmetry in certain spaces is sometimes complicated, but always necessary. THE SOLUTION: Balancing both sides of a large piece of furniture, such as a bed, creates consistency. Additionally, incorporating the architecture of the room and similarly shaped decorative pieces helps floor plans flow. For more information, call S. Bogan Designs at (843) 789-3743 or visit sbogandesigns.com.

KEEPING IT

YVONNE GREGORY, Allied ASID Yvonne Gregory Interiors THE CHALLENGE: Hectic living and disorder occasionally make their way into a home's décor, and it can be difficult for a homeowner to stay organized. THE SOLUTION: Utilize chic storage options, such as an ottoman, to hide unsightly clutter. For more information, call Yvonne Gregory Interiors at (843) 708-3535 or visit yvonnegregoryinteriors.com.

MELISSA HUNTER MW Hunter Custom Interiors and Design THE CHALLENGE: Transitioning from one style to another can be a daunting task. THE SOLUTION: To move from a traditional décor to a transitional style, pull in clean lines with new furniture, brighter colors with lighter fabrics, and different textures with wallpaper. For more information, call MW Hunter Custom Interiors and Design at (843) 556-4939.

KEEPING IT

Deirdre Stevens • GDC Home THE CHALLENGE: In many cases, the design process can intimidate clients, and they have a hard time seeing the big picture. THE SOLUTION: Building trust between the designer and homeowner helps them understand the design process. Designing a room with style and functionality saves money in the long run and avoids costly mistakes. For more information, call GDC Home at (843) 571-5142 or visit gdchome.com.

AMANDRA KELLY, Allied ASID • 32°80° Loft Interiors & Gallery THE CHALLENGE: Clients with strict budgets and tight timelines often feel overwhelmed when trying to produce an elegant interior, especially if the home is a rental. THE SOLUTION: In a rental, opt for a transitional, classic design with affordable products that can withstand constant use.

KEEPING IT

LAUREN MESSINA, ASID Lauren M. Creative THE CHALLENGE: Homeowners often default to an all-white look for the most frequently used room in the house—the kitchen. THE SOLUTION: Don't be afraid of color. White kitchens are wonderful, but contrast is nice, too. Spice it up with a dark island or bright accent colors in the accessories. For more information, call Lauren M. Creative at (843) 214-4157 or visit laurenmcreative.com.

SANDRA ERICKSEN Sandra Ericksen Design THE CHALLENGE: Sometimes a renovation project turns out to be a bigger undertaking than originally expected. THE SOLUTION: Often designers work with homeowners through the remodeling process to adjust the plans and the budget as needed. This helps to avoid receiving a surprise bill along with the keys to the updated abode. For more information, call Sandra Ericksen Design at (843) 324-5914 or visit sandraericksen.com.

KEEPING IT

CYNTHIA ZIMMERMAN, ASID Zimmerman Interiors THE CHALLENGE: With a narrow room, it can be hard to design a functional space. THE SOLUTION: Section a long room into multiple areas. This room is divided into three distinctive spaces with the television in the largest section. The room also has a smaller table for games and puzzles and a reading nook for cozying up with a good book. For more information, call Zimmerman Interiors at (843) 971-6880 or visit zimmermaninteriors.net.

DONNA HORACK, ASID 32°80° Loft Interiors & Gallery THE CHALLENGE: Bathrooms are often small and tight, making them one of the trickiest spaces to design.THE SOLUTION: A separate vanity area offers privacy from the washroom; with the right design, this layout is possible even in a tiny space. Natural materials, suede paint, flagstone, and copper accents add eye-catching interest. For more information, call 32°80° Loft Interiors & Gallery at (843) 974-5979 or visit 3280loft.com.

KAREN GERMOND • KMD Interiors THE CHALLENGE: Large windows are great additions to the style of a home, and they let in so much sunlight. However, they can also present décor dilemmas because they are naturally bold focal points—whether you want them to be or not. THE SOLUTION: Redesigning the fireplace to a more streamlined style, blending modern lighting and textures (like natural wood finishes, stone, and leather), and taking advantage of certain angles make the room flow gracefully from one focal point to the next. For more information, call KMD Interiors at (843) 819-8254 or visit kmdinteriors.com.

The Space Hands down, there is no venue more elegant and sophisticated to stage a home show in Charleston than the newly renovated Gaillard Center. It’s a beautifully designed space, and to make the most of it, we hired local architect Trevor McNeil Draper, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP and principal of TMD Architects to help us create the floor plan. Trevor walked the space while it was under construction and listened closely to our needs. He then assembled eight different floor plans using different configurations to give us several options to choose from, all the while carefully adhering to strict fire-marshal codes for each of his floor plans. If you are preparing to build a new home, talk with Trevor about how he can help you. Don’t go it alone. You’re investing too much money and too much time to take a chance that the outcome of your project will not be what you want. Working with Trevor is like buying an insurance policy, which ensures a positive outcome on your next project.

FREE Admission on Friday plus Reduced Admission All Weekend We want everyone with a home project in 2016 to come to the Charleston Home + Design Show and, of course, see the newly renovated Gaillard Center. We’re throwing open the doors with free admission on Friday from 11am-6pm. Plus, we're reducing admission on Saturday and Sunday to $2 after 2pm each day.

Why Should I Try an Interior Designer? “To envision a space is one thing; to make it a reality takes a professional who can incorporate style, balance, and design concepts for beautiful and functional results. Interior designers help to avoid mistakes homeowners make when trying to implement their vision on their own.” –Cynthia Zimmerman, ASID of Zimmerman Interiors

Morning in NoMo By: Megan Busch

Diggity Doughnuts The upper peninsula has been growing exceedingly quickly—so much so that the district has earned the moniker, NoMo (standing for North Morrison). Developers are constantly seeking to transform the dilapidated and industrial buildings in the area into swanky modern offices or eclectic new eateries. Assistant Editor Erin Forbes and I decided to take a morning walk straight to one of our nearby favorites, Diggity Doughnuts.

a self-taught doughnut enthusiast known for creating delectable treats with a healthy spin. Did I just say healthy and doughnut in the same sentence? Each spongy sweet round is created with organic ingredients, minimal sugar, and whole-wheat flour. Some of the flavors are even gluten free and vegan friendly. There’s no compromise on the flavor, though. Our favorites? Tree Bark (with toffee, saltines, and dark chocolate), Raspberry Champagne, and the Nutty Rooster (a oddly pleasing combo of peanut butter and sriracha).

Indigo Market Next, we ventured to Indigo Market, the most recent addition to NoMo. Indigo Market specializes in new home décor and upcycled vintage pieces. Once a booth at the Mt. Pleasant Mall, the charming shop showcases the work of several local designers and promises the perfect gift for any upcoming occasion. Erin and I chatted with co-owners Liz Lyday and Chrissie Batten and welcomed them to the neighborhood. As it turns out, they’re locals, each living just a stone’s throw away from the store. If you’re seeking a morning out for some home shopping, don’t forget the upper peninsula. In addition to Indigo Market, the area boasts a plethora of locally owned homedesign stores. While you’re in the vicinity, check out these shopping hot spots, too!
