This issue’s cover story took the CH+D staff on a miniature adventure beginning at Atlantic Aviation (Brad’s current workplace) where our team sat in the cockpit of a Cessna Citation Mustang jet. A few days later, we arrived at Brad and Amy’s I’On home—a house that is not only eyecatching and stately, but also cozy, homey, and spotlessly clean (an adjective that, according to Amy, describes the type-A couple’s abode even when they’re not being invaded by a photography team).

EDITOR'S NOTE

O peration information exploration I

’m a consumer that likes to be informed to the point where I spend far too much time doing research about the pros and cons of products. This, as my husband says, is both a blessing and a curse. My self-inflicted burden is time consuming, but in the end, I always know what I want. I do my research by consulting those who know more than me.

That being said, when it comes to making selections for the home, I do believe that everyone should know whom to consult. So, with that in mind, we at CH+D did the legwork to save you time. With this summer’s shopping feature, we direct you to some of the best local home professionals—and their elaborate showrooms—in order of when you’d need them in the process of building or remodeling a home. This is a resource you should not overlook! And as an extension to that feature, our annual outdoor living guide reveals the potential in even the most basic of backyard spaces. I suggest you grab a sketchpad so you can doodle your own slice of paradise. Pergolas, ponds, and planters anyone? I say, “Yes. Someone who knows more than a little about taking advantage of the outdoors is this issue’s cover feature, Brad Van Liew, the only American to sail solo around the world three times. Not only does he have some truly amazing stories to share from his adventures, but his I’On home is impeccable, thanks in large part to his new bride Amy (who has fantastic taste!). Take a moment to read about how these Charleston transplants are transitioning into their Lowcountry love nest.

Home (from left) Arturo Lopez, Tara Desirae Davis, Ryan Milosh, and Brian Hopkins of Ecofoam.

Nothing is worse than the sound of a constantly running air conditioner (or furnace) and the sight of the associated bill. No one knows this more than the team at Charleston’s new spray foam insulation company, Ecofoam. Hailing from diverse climates—northern and southern—each company member has a different perspective. One member believes spray foam is best in the winter; it keeps the heat in. Another thinks spray foam is best in the summer; it keeps the heat out. CH+D took a moment to speak with one of Ecofoam’s founders, Tara Desirae Davis (who thinks spray foam is a great solution in any climate). We learned that her team is on the same page with one thing; they’re proud to provide such an effective product.

Eco is in the name, so tell us why your spray foam is eco-friendly.

roots in our current market [Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Savannah], but our ultimate goal is to have five locations. We have been watching the market in Charleston for the last year. The city has great growth and energy. Ecofoam wants to be a part of the opportunity that Charleston has to offer.

Spray foam insulation is eco-friendly because it reduces the homeowners’ carbon footprint. Without spray-foam insulation, air conditioners work harder to cool a home in the summer months, and in the winter months, heat easily escapes through the attic. Spray foam insulation can reduce that energy waste by up to fifty percent, which will reduce the bill as well.

What do you see as the key to your company’s success?

Your company is new to the Lowcountry. Why did you decide to branch out to Charleston?

The Ecofoam team (made up of Arturo Lopez, Ryan Milosh, Brian Hopkins, and me) has over 35 years of experience in the residential and commercial construction industry. Ecofoam was Arturo’s vision, and we teamed up three years ago to make it happen. The construction industry and economy were at their worst then, but we really believed in the product. Since starting Ecofoam, the three of us have been very hands-on and involved in the daily operations of our multiple locations.

It was a natural progression to move into the Charleston market. We have established

For more information, call Ecofoam at (843) 645-2300 or visit ecofoaminsulations.com.

What is involved in an energy audit, and why do you think it is important for homeowners in this location specifically? A home is a system built with components that need to work together to produce optimal results. Energy Auditors look at a home as a system and can give an entire picture of how to make a house perform at its best. Energy audits give the homeowners the big picture and help them make educated decisions. Ecofoam, in many cases, is a logical solution for homeowners.

Watt’s Up with LED Lights? EveryWatt Matters Promotes Energy Efficiency with LED Lighting Solutions When it comes to being energy efficient in lighting, LED is the most effective way to go. A single LED bulb has a lifespan of nearly 50,000 hours (as compared to an incandescent bulb, which only lasts about 1,200 hours) and can reduce your electric bill 50 to 80 percent. Furthermore, unlike fluorescent lights, many LED lights are RoHS (Restricted of Hazardous Substances) compliant, meaning that harmful chemicals are neither contained in the LED light nor used in the production of the product. On a grander scale,

since less energy is consumed by LED bulbs, there is a decreased need for coal-fired power plants. This, in turn, reduces greenhouse gas emissions. In short, switching to LED light bulbs is a simple way for humanity to make a step towards preserving Mother Nature. (Receiving a smaller electric bill is certainly a nice perk, too.) For more information, call EveryWatt Matters at (843) 606-1222 or visit everywattmatters.com.

Generating a Green Environment Battery- and Solar-Powered Home Generators Living in Charleston, homeowners are constantly faced with the threat of power loss caused by hurricanes. Having a backup generator can ease the anxiety of living without heat, air conditioning, refrigeration, and light (among many other modern conveniences). When choosing a generator, there are many options, including eco-conscious models. The Indoor Generator is a battery-powered unit designed for apartments, condos, medical offices, and other structures in which an engine-driven generator is not allowed or not preferred. The systems, which use less energy than traditional units, can either be charged via an electrical outlet or through solar panels. Two other generators—

30

CH+D • Summer 2013

manufactured by Cummins and Generac Generators—are fueled by natural gas, which, when burned, produces up to 50-percent less greenhouse gasses than coal. Any of these options reduce oil imports, cost less to operate in comparison to running an engine-driven generator, ease the anxiety of being caught without power, and make less of an impact on the environment. For more information, call Lowcountry Generators at (843) 696-0082 or visit lowcountrygenerators.com.

ASK THE EXPERTS Excerpts from our radio show TALKING ABOUT A HOME

Hardscaping

We asked five experts:

“With the economy getting better, what improvements do you see in your field?” Cleaning

Mediation

Appliance Repair

Flooring

Craig Turner

Heather Fairbairn

Britt Travis

Martin Stapleton

Dean Kelly

“Being a part of Lowcountry Paver’s team, I have noticed that the curb appeal of many houses has become much better since the economy has improved. We are now receiving more calls about our services. I see it every day; whenever we equip a property with pavers, it always looks superior to a house with asphalt or concrete. With pavers, you will rarely see any sort of cracks or wear and tear within the first 20 years, which means yards will remain looking decent through many decades.”

“With people becoming less concerned with the economy recently, they have become more concerned with the environment. Because our company provides products that are environmentally friendly, our services are definitely needed. We have tested and used dozens of products, but we believe that it all boils down to customer service. People just want an old-fashioned cleaning, without harsh chemicals, by people who aren’t afraid to do dirty work. We follow instructions, and we work for the clients.”

“Having witnessed a lot of litigations between homeowners and their contractors, I have noticed that the recession has weeded out a lot of the bad contractors. When homeowners are rebuilding or remodeling, they tend to take a leap of faith in trusting their contractors, assuming everything will be done properly. With the improvement in the economy, homeowners now have a wider and better selection of higher quality contractors. It is a great time to either build or remodel a home.”

“Recently, we’ve definitely seen an influx of calls. Also, some of the customers that are facing major repairs are instead opting to upgrade their 10-15 year old appliances with new, more efficient appliances. This is good for our business because we not only repair appliances, but also sell, install, and maintain new products over the years. We have a really unique business in that we work very closely with some of the appliance distributors in the area. We’ve kind of turned ourselves into a one-stop shop.”

“I’ve noticed people are moving from installing carpets to installing hardwood and tile. In our improving economy, there has been a decrease in carpet sales from 70 percent of our sales 20 years ago to 35 to 40 percent of our sales today. Conversely, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) has had a 38to 40-percent growth. The styles are so unique and appealing that we are putting them in homes more often than we used to. If you want something that’s durable and affordable, Luxury Vinyl Tile is the way to go, and it can easily replace your old carpet.”

e take a lot of pride in the detail put into designing and building this house,” notes Sea Island Builders’s Managing Partner and homeowner Sam Fowler. Located on Isle of Palms, it is the winner of HGTV’s 2012 Doory Award for Best Beach House. Proving that a waterfront house can also be an architecturally innovative home, this structure fits in flawlessly with the nature of the neighborhood. Fowler points out, “The house was designed to fit in among the trees.” As an active participant in the architectural design and building process, his workmanship is clearly evident. Almost every room incorporates natural wood on the walls and ceilings with a combination of V-groove, shiplap, and reverse-board-and-batten designs. Homemade details, such as custom cabinetry and mahogany doors, add elegance to the entire home. The fresh and modern atmosphere is perfect for escaping the bustling city of Charleston.

YOUR MONEY’S WORTH

Taking a Look at the Cost of Professional Home Inspections

E

veryone knows that inspections are required during the building process, but what if you’re buying an older home? How do you know if there are problems with the home beyond what’s visible to the naked eye? Professional home inspectors check houses for potential health dangers and wallet-threatening hazards before you spend your hard-earned money on the life-changing purchase.

Jeffrey Donaldson of Ace Preferred Inspections

Purchasing with Confidence:

Safety First:

A proper inspection of a home identifies dangers lurking within the structure, including stairwells with unstable treads, faulty electrical systems, and hidden water leaks. Another method of preventing harm comes through an appliance recall checking system (called a “Recall Chek” by Ace Preferred). Jeffrey explains, “Every year, millions of appliances are recalled for fire and safety issues. Unlike vehicles, appliances are not formally registered, so the manufacturers have no way of informing owners of recalled appliances. We gather the make and model numbers during the inspection and run them through the Consumer Product Safety Commission database. Our clients receive a report that tells them if there are any recalled appliances in the house. If a recall is identified, our report provides the phone number for the manufacturer. In

A professional inspector can offer you peace of mind about your purchase and suggest helpful advice about foreseeable problems. Jeffrey Donaldson, a local home inspector and owner of Ace Preferred Inspections, describes, “It’s important for both the buyer and the seller to know the true condition of the home in question so that they can make informed decisions as they move through the sale or purchase process.”

some cases, especially with older devices, the manufacturer may offer a free replacement or a discount coupon towards a new appliance. We also resubmit the data every month and email our clients to let them know about any new recalls.” The Recall Chek keeps homeowners informed about oft-occurring recalls and safe from potential hazards.

Money Matters:

As if the safety reasons did not provide a strong enough reason to invest in a home inspection, the monetary benefits merely add to the list of pros. In many cases, a professional inspection will reveal and identify the areas in the home in need of repair. These repairs can be used in negotiations with the seller before the time comes to sign on the dotted line. In addition, some of the problems revealed by the

inspector can be fixed sooner rather than later—before severe, costly damage has occurred. An inspection, too, may help with home budgeting, offering projections about when large-scale replacements (such as a new roof or heating system) will need to be considered. ast from an Italian marble fountain, this piece is a reproduction involving a bit of artistic recreation. After years of providing joy to birds and squirrels, the hand-carved, marble antique had lost its heron heads. So, a North Carolina artist gave the piece a new life by stone casting the whole fountain and sculpting the missing fowls’ faces. While not an antique itself, the birdbath allows a new generation to appreciate the original. For more information, call TradeWinds Exotic Home and Garden at (843) 367-5224.

Day 1

The whole elevator (including the rails, cab, sling, cables, and tank) arrives in Charleston from the Waupaca plant in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Day 2

(from left) Michael Collins and Riley Bartlett of Coastal Elevators and Lifts

Two Months Prior

The supervisor from Waupaca Elevator Company measures and designs the elevator according to specifications sent to the manufacturer by Coastal Elevators and Lifts. The elevator factory workers assemble the whole elevator in the warehouse, bolting everything together to make sure the system lines up. Then, they disassemble the product for shipping.

The installation team at Coastal Elevators— Michael and Riley—loads the shipping crate onto a trailer and brings it to the Kiawah Island job site. Michael and Riley take about an hour to separate all of the components into neat piles. Then, they inspect the rails to make sure they are straight. If the product stands up to scrutiny, they install the rails. Since this is a hydraulic elevator, they also mount the header at the top of the shaft. The header is the piece of equipment that brings the cab up and down. Both the rails and the header require two installers because of the pieces' incredible weight.

Michael goes to the machine room on the third floor to hook up the power and runs all the wires to the control box. Riley begins to set up the interlocks, the devices that keep the door closed so that someone doesn’t just walk through and fall into the “pit.” Interestingly, they wire it so that if the power goes out, the homeowner has 15 minutes of elevator running time in the down direction to escape to safety.

CHARLES ON

The CraftSmen:

Drew Taylor, Macon Davis, and Clark Mills of Carpenter’s Antiques and Restoration

The Craft:

The company has always specialized in unique finishes (including faux and distressed) with the ultimate goal of refurbishing or refacing antique furniture. Now, however, with new and young leadership, they are excited to include carpentry on their menu of services.

The Backstory:

Clark Mills purchased the company over a year ago from his mentor and longtime Carpenter’s Antiques owner, Bud Carpenter, after being an apprentice in the shop for years. Wanting to use his University of South Carolina MBA and having a vision for the business, Clark took on the position in an economic time when most would not. However, upon adding new services and making partnerships with local kitchen and bath design companies (like Jilco, Signature Kitchens, and

54

Mevers), Clark, his two hardworking employees, and his office-manager wife, Leigh, are flush with orders.

The Process:

For the company’s bread and butter—restoration work—the custom process most often includes repairing the furniture piece (regluing a broken leg, for instance), stripping the original finish, and sanding. Macon takes on a great deal of these projects. The custom builtins, while new to the company, are in the capable hands of Carpenter’s Antiques’s latest hire Drew Taylor, who apprenticed for a carpenter in Canada prior to moving south. And each employee is well-versed in the finishing process, which involves spraying the furniture in a wellventilated paint booth and drying the pieces on racks in a room filled with electric heaters.

For more information, call Carpenter’s Antiques and Restoration at (843) 884-3411 or visit carpenters-restoration.com.

HE SAID / SHE SAID

Compiled by Chase Hughes • Photograph by Matt Bolt

The Ins & Outs of Woodworking James and Sarah Jacobs, the fatherdaughter duo of Charleston Woodworks, offer their views and insights on kitchen cabinetry, historic homes, and simple projects that will spice up any room. Sarah and James Jacobs

Question:

He Said:

She Said:

When designing kitchen cabinetry, would you rather incorporate drawers or shelves into the design?

He Said: In my mind, base cabinets should be primarily drawers or pullout shelves behind doors. I’m old, so I appreciate being able to access everything in my cabinets without having to get down on the floor and dig around. Upper cabinets really function best with adjustable shelving in the box to accommodate specific storage needs.

She Said: I like pull-out shelves as opposed to drawers for base cabinets. The upper cabinets can have more than shelves. A great, new option in hardware is called a cabinet pull-down system, a metal unit that is installed in the cabinet box that typically has two or three shelves. The whole unit pulls forward out of the box and then lowers to approximately countertop height.

Would you rather remodel a historic home or a relatively newer home?

He Said: There is nothing more rewarding than maintaining the character of a historic home while modernizing it. It is important for homeowners to realize, though, that things shouldn’t be saved simply because they’re old. What you should be most concerned with is keeping the spirit of the design in place while making the home functional and sturdy for the years you intend to live in it (and, hopefully, beyond).

She Said: I like to do projects in new construction. I tend to have a more contemporary style, so personally, these projects are more fun for me. You can go in and gut a place without really having to worry about damaging something historic. I also really enjoy incorporating the newest materials and hardware designs that don’t always make sense aesthetically in a historic home.

What is the best kind of simple home addition that increases the resale value?

He Said: There really is something to be said for first impressions. Simply swapping your traditional front door with a door that has a glass light [window] at the top will make a tremendous difference in the natural light in your entry and in the impression the doorway gives. Depending on the design choices you make, you can tick off boxes for improving curb appeal, interior lighting, insulation, and overall quality— just by sprucing up the entryway.

She Said: If I’m just making a quick change to my home, I love the idea of replacing the mantelpiece. This is a quick project that can give you the feeling of a big change without much expense or inconvenience. The fireplace is often the focal point of a great room or a living room, and by taking down your standard, white-painted, thin mantelpiece and replacing it with a custom one that suits your taste, the entire feel of the room will change for the better.

H2OME

A peek into products designed to weather the coastal elements

Photograph by Megan J. Busch

Rough winds and constant damp climates can wreak havoc on the exterior of homes, especially those that rely on typical exterior paint to protect and beautify. With the rise of a new technology, however, your home can undergo a drastic exterior makeover with a substance like Rhino Shield, which contains billions of ceramic microspheres that allow the coating to perform under harsh elements. The formula resists cracking, chipping, and peeling, and it creates a waterproof, insulating seal around the home. Furthermore, the material is unaffected by salt air corrosion. Rhino Shield exceeded the Federal Wind-Driven Rain Specification test, which measures coating adhesion in wind and rain moving at up to 98 miles per hour. Bonus? Rhino Shield comes with a 25-year warranty, ensuring that you won’t even have to think about repainting for at least two and a half decades.

Special processes are always required when building or purchasing a home on the coast; homeowners must consider hurricane-resistant shutters, specific insurance policies, and rustrepelling nails. If you’re constructing a woodsided home, certain types of materials hold up better in salty environments. Joe Davies of Liberty Cedar recommends using vertical-grain Western Red Cedar trim boards, timbers, shakes, and shingles. The species, overall, is one of the most decay-resistant, low-maintenance, reliable woods available for home construction. Western Red Cedar materials offer lasting, natural beauty for years, even in the coastal, humid Carolinas.

BUILDING BLOCKS Bruce Canton, owner of Canton Construction Company, grew up knowing he wanted to be a builder. Gleaning inspiration from his great uncle and two older brothers (all three of whom were master carpenters), Bruce learned the trade very early on. After high school graduation, he started a small business in his hometown. Then, following a dream to live, work, and ski in Colorado, he moved to the Rockies and concentrated on constructing commercial and custom-home projects. After meeting his wife, Mary, and having his first daughter, he relocated to Charleston, where he concentrates on Kiawah Island luxury home building. Bruce Canton of Canton Construction Company

Who has been the greatest influence on your success today? My father, who—at 91 years old—is still going strong and building his third kit airplane. He grew up in a small oystering town, and after a successful career as a pilot and a cadet instructor in the Army’s Air Corp, he entered the civilian workforce. He became a leader in both the auto and real estate industries. His work ethic and determination has inspired me to work diligently and ethically to build a fruitful career and personal life.

Have you worked on a particularly interesting or unique project in the past? The Dockside Condominium lobby renovation is a really interesting project that I completed. Besides the logistics of over 100 residents going through our construction site daily while we worked, implementing the design was satisfying. We installed a domed ceiling, a library with extensive paneling, custom marble and tile, and intricate millwork.

What’s your favorite step of the building process? It has got to be the end stage. I enjoy seeing the result of our work as well as the owners’ satisfaction and pride in their new home.

Do you have any exciting new projects starting in the near future? We are excited to start a project on Isle of Palms. We did a renovation for the owners on their Kiawah beachfront home 15 years ago, and they have selected us again to do a large-scale remodel at their recently purchased home. We are in the planning stages now and expect to incorporate a beautiful outdoor living area, structural up-fits, kitchen and bath redesigns, and custom finishes into the home.

Architect Kevin Whalley attended Delhi University in New York before attending Oklahoma University to complete his architectural studies. There, he spent six years after graduation fulfilling internship requirements to finish his education. He has practiced architecture in the Midwest for 11 years and in South Carolina for 24 years since then. During this time, he has grown not merely his portfolio, but also his family with his beloved wife, Cindy Lou.

My individual philosophy about architecture evolves as I practice in the profession. I appreciate that the buildings we create will last and be used for a long time. They must be wellthought-out and become a positive addition to the neighborhood. So I do my best to study the environment around the project site completely in order to fully understand the context that the building will be set in. A sustainable design is an important goal for us to achieve in every project.

When did you realize that you have a passion for architecture? My passion was fueled by a series of mentors. I was first introduced to woodworking at an early age by my father, who was my first mentor. I saw him over my young years repair and fix just about everything. Upon graduation from high school, I pursued an associate’s degree at the college where one of my teachers, Robert Stonebridge, had attended. He would bring his drawing projects into the classroom, and

that is where I saw my first house plans. Robert was my second mentor. I began to draw additions; I actually built a small storage addition to a motel owned by my friend’s father. Being a good carpenter, he guided me along the way to finish the project. He was my third mentor. After that, I submitted my sketches to a scholarship competition and won the scholarship. That flabbergasted my folks, and I officially began my adventure into the architecture world.

What’s in store for you and Architecture Plus this year? We’ve been very fortunate, and we currently have several custom, new-home projects on Daniel, Kiawah, Seabrook, Johns and Edisto Islands. In addition, we are now completing the design of a new restaurant opening up on King Street downtown. The economy has really picked up, and we’re anticipating a great year. The fact that this project was unusual in its design also made it challenging. And challenging is usually fun,” quips David.

This home required nothing if not special attention to detail. The arches, in particular, were of the utmost importance in the design phase. They can be seen in the doorframes, the windows, the ceilings, the exterior finishes, and even the cabinets. “One subcontractor, like the cabinet subcontractor, had to make his arches mimic the interior trim arch, for instance. aking the homeowners’ every desire into account, Anita King and Jesse Phipps of Ink Architecture combined their creative minds to generate cohesion between architecture and décor. This Sullivan’s Island home was designed completely through a team effort—Anita acting as the principal architect and Jesse as the chief interior designer. Jesse explains, “We work hand-in-hand, and I think it helped produce a better outcome in the end because we were all on the same page with the same vision.”

The whole project began with the homeowners’ ideas for the functionality of the home. They wanted three things: a house that wasn’t over-thetop in square footage, a special place for their children to play, and a home that would grow with the family. To fulfill these wishes, Anita and Jesse designed a custom home for four— with all the high-quality finishes and amenities one would want—in a relatively small amount of space (3,800 square feet). Then, they made sure to consider the two small children of the family, be-

Avid readers, the homeowners wanted ample space to store their books in the living room without the shelves looking over-crowed or messy. Jesse took several hours just to arrange the novels perfectly on the shelves surrounding the television and flanking the doors to the home office.

The master bedroom and en suite present a cozy haven for the parents of the home to find relaxation and tranquility.

(above left) With a vision to provide space for their children to grow and play, the homeowners requested separate suites for their son and daughter. The daughter’s bathroom, similar in size and shape to her brother’s, features a custom, girly shower curtain and feminine accessories. ginning with the kids’ den. Jesse describes, “When we first started, the kid’s den was a high priority. The homeowners wanted to have a space for the children to be out of the way but still very visible. So we created a kids’ den behind the kitchen. The homeowner can be cooking, yet she can still see right into the room and keep an eye on the children. We also made a drink station right near that doorway of the den so the kids can go there, grab a snack and a drink, and not have to walk into the kitchen’s workspace.” This isn’t the only space that the children have all to themselves, though. Anita and Jesse also created a unique bedroom for each child. Anita remembers the design process, saying, “We tried to keep the kids’ rooms equal in size, shape, and so on. They are each located in the peaks of the roof, and we played up that aspect with some wood, tongue-andgroove ceilings. To contrast the masculine

with the feminine, we stained the little boy’s ceilings and painted the little girl’s.” The furniture, all the interior finishes, and the décor were chosen specifically for each child by the Ink duo. Finally, the home had to be able to grow with the family. To fulfill this need, Anita and Jesse positioned the home in such a way to allow for a pool in the future. Anita elaborates, “A pool was one of the things that the homeowners really wanted, but their kids are so young now that it didn’t make sense to install it yet. So we did all the calculations to design the house to accommodate a pool later.” With a completed project under their belts, there was only one thing for the ladies of Ink Architecture to do—celebrate! Anita and Jesse, with the help of the homeowners, hosted an open-house sock

party. Local home professionals, realtors, and subcontractors came out in their funkiest, wildest socks to tour the home. Bonus? The socks helped protect the reclaimed oak hardwood floors. As all the visitors could see, the house not only reflects the execution of the homeowners’ desires, but also fits perfectly into the coastal, elegant Sullivan’s Island atmosphere. v For more information, call Ink Architecture at (843) 882-7810 or visit inkarchitecturellc.com.

ast Kiawah’s second gate, in a newly constructed home overlooking a calm inlet, is a perfect example of design meeting function. The relocating homeowners had a vision of how they wanted their retirement home to look and operate, and Southeast Kitchens played a large role in bringing that vision to fruition. Owner of Southeast Kitchens Fran Ploetz remembers, “They told us what

they were looking for in terms of the style. They wanted a big island, for one thing, and a contemporary look. We used a slab-style door, which is about as contemporary looking as you can get, and long, stainless steel pulls.” For the cabinetry, the homeowners (with Fran’s help) chose solid maple doors in a butternut-colored stain from Omega Cabinetry, one of four cabinetry manufacturers with which Southeast Kitchens works.

The customizability also gave them free reign to design an incomparable island. Crescent-like in shape, the island is curved on the bar side (seating close to seven guests) and straight on the kitchen

side (displaying plenty of drawers, a very popular feature in kitchens today). Both sides meet at a dramatic point in the dining room. “We struggled with the shape and the geometry,” explains Fran. “We wanted to make sure all of the lines were parallel and had good clearances.” While the master bathroom exhibits the same exact cabinetry as the kitchen, the office, and the laundry room, the look is completely different for one reason: stain color. The bathroom cabinetry has a masculine Chestnut stain, which is a striking color choice when paired with the creamcolored granite. And for the remaining bathrooms, Southeast Kitchens provided classic, white, shaker-style, frameless, Kitchen Craft cabinetry. This choice was perfect for those rooms that required a simple, traditional elegance. They saw an opportunity to keep what they loved about the home and rid themselves of the aspects that made the structure less than perfect. Who says that you can’t have everything?

Certainly not Chris Rose, a well-reputed, prolific architect in the Lowcountry tasked with the drastic Kiawah Island remodel. “In my practice [Christopher Rose Architects, P.A.], we’ve probably done an equal number of renovations as I have new construction,” reminisces Chris. “I find some architects only do new construction. To me, the renovations tend to be more satisfying because the homeowner has lived with the home, found the quirks that have bothered them. home, like the brick fireplace and the living room trusses.

For this Kiawah Island home, the floor plan was more than a little cleaned up. In fact, over 90 percent of the home was altered or replaced, not so much because the homeowners wanted it to be but because Bruce Canton of Canton Construction Company found unexpected issues with the beloved home.

In addition to addressing the practical foundation problems, Bruce and Chris added four bedrooms onto the structure by extending the front and adding a second floor. The homeowners essentially got a new house, and it still came in under the estimated price of starting from scratch.

“When we got into the structure, we found less than we were hoping,” explains Bruce. “Not only were the pilings unsubstantiated, but so were the footers. So, we scraped everything out and started over again. It happened all the way through the structure; we got the worst-case scenarios.” Still, Bruce strove to maintain certain elements of the original

80

CH+D • Summer 2013

“We reused some of the existing structure that was sound and then added additional structure,” Chris describes. “And it is nice, too, having some of the newer materials. They’re a lot more sustainable, and they’ll last longer. And this talk about sustainability—renovation is the ultimate sustainability.”

(above) One of the four bedrooms added to the family home, this guest room is perfect for visitors because of its quaint size (and proximity to the kitchen).

And by Chris’s design, Bruce increased the sustainability by running the HVAC systems through climatized space. “We have nothing running underneath the house, nothing that is susceptible to rodents or humidity or weather. Even if a flood came, the home would still be okay,” says Bruce emphatically. The pair proved you can have it all—the square footage, the efficiency, the location, and the essence of the home the family has loved for decades. v For more information about Canton Construction, call (843) 795-6388 or visit cantonconstructionco.com. Chris describes, “A lot of people will call us and say, ‘I’ve got a few bushes to move,’ or ’I want to plant a couple of azaleas.’ But we always encourage our customers, before they even start, to have a plan. The best way to have success, whether in building a home or building a landscape, is to have a solid plan.” To establish a plan, you could have a sketch drawn up by a professional architect and bring it to your landscaping company, or if you already have a vision in mind, you can take your ideas directly to your landscaper. hand, the immature planting method incorporates plants that are in their grass-root stages, and you get to see them grow and mature throughout the months and seasons (it is also the less expensive option). For this Olde Park yard, Charleston Landscape and the homeowners chose the mature-installation option, placing 1,500 to 2,000 fully grown plants in the yard. Hardscapes are implemented for both practical and aesthetic purposes. Meandering paths provide a Secret Garden elegance and a safe place to traverse; fire pits offer a cozy space for entertaining and much-needed warmth for the chilly autumn nights; and retaining walls complement the exterior of the home and hold flowers and plants in place. The front porch’s cylindrical concept, for example, was Lori’s vision. She explains, “We were out playing golf, and I saw this one house that had the porch I wanted. I took a picture of it, gave it to Donnie, and said, ‘Can we do that on our house?’” The answer from the design team was a resounding yes. When constructing a custom home, it’s all about incorporating exactly what the homeowners want into the design. After all, they’ll be living in the house for years to come; it may as well be perfect. Donnie notes, “When you build a custom home, the style is really for the homeowner. We bring our experience into the mix and make suggestions, but ultimately, we build what the homeowners want.”

(above) Builder Donald Headden of Headden Enterprises built Brad and Amy’s 4,010-square-foot I’On home in 2009. The house exudes Southern charm with its white picket fence, traditional columns, metal roof, and brick entryway. (right) The dining room, as well as the rest of the home, is adorned with artwork that is near-and-dear to the Van Liews’ hearts, such as posters from Brad’s sailing races, pieces by local artists and friends, and original, Dutch painted tiles passed down through generations.

Although you have spent thousands of hours flying airplanes, your career is most marked by your time sailing around the world. When did your passion for boating begin? Brad: I grew up in a place called Rancho Santa Fe in California. While at summer camp, I learned to sail; I started with little boats and moved into bigger boats. During high school, I went to Newport, Rhode Island to work as a paid hand on race boats. My mom and dad said that I was at that age where I needed a summer job, and I couldn’t think of anything better than playing around with boats if I had to do something. There, I fell in love with the idea of the single-handed, around-the-world race, and I became infatuated with completing it. There was one guy in the United States, Mike Plant, who was the guru of this race. I

94

CH+D • Summer 2013

was fortunate enough to train with him for a year. I tried to do the race in the early nineties, but I failed to find the financing. I was too young to do it really. But you eventually went on to complete the race, correct? Brad: Yes. Three times. After college [at the University of Southern California], I started an executive air charter company and taught flying lessons at the Santa Monica airport for a number of years. The bug to do the solo race sort of never went away, though. So I decided to take a sabbatical to try to attempt it. At that point, it was called the Around Alone based here in Charleston. In 1998, I came to Charleston for the first time from Los Angeles with a boat I had rebuilt specifically for that race, which went on from 1998 to 1999. I was able to finish the race,

which is a huge feat in itself. Boat races like these have pretty high attrition rates; sixteen of us started the Around Alone and only eight of us finished. I had a lot of big things happen, but I did pretty well regardless. I was actually dismasted, and my boat rolled over near Cape Horn [South America]. This seems like a really dangerous journey—nothing like what people think of when they drive over the James Island Connector and see the boats bobbing in the harbor. What is it like to sail in one of the around-the-world races? Brad: All three global races I did were solo. They're a very dangerous part of the sport. We’ve had a couple of people die or be lost at sea. The problem is that when it goes wrong, it goes really, really wrong. You either come back or you

In Liew of Adventure don’t. There’s no such thing as a Coast Guard for the world, so when you get in a pinch on one of the remote legs down near Antarctica, you can really only rely on your competitors for rescue. I had a knot in my stomach the whole time I was competing. It’s a very stressful thing, and it ages you really fast; I can tell you that. I went gray in a matter of months.

160 who have soloed a boat around the world. More people have been in outer space. Finishing a race like the ones I did really gives an awesome sense of accomplishment. After travelling around the world during your races, what finally brought you to Charleston?

The lifestyle on board is very busy and much more rugged than people expect. There’s no running water, there’s no air conditioning, there’s no refrigeration, and there’s no toilet. You eat dehydrated food, make drinking water out of seawater, and sleep on a beanbag. You’re also usually very wet and cold or very wet and hot. It’s not very comfortable. When you don’t take a shower for a month and a half, you start feeling a little gooey.

I really got plugged into the Charleston community when I got here, and that helped me establish roots. I was the executive director for the [South Carolina] Maritime Foundation, and we were building the tall ship [The Spirit of South Carolina]. During that time, I worked closely with the mayor’s office, the congressmen, the senators, and the police department. It was good to feel included and know the who’s whos of the area.

Weathering the elements like that must have some advantages, though. What did you take away from the experience? Brad: I knew this was something I loved when I completed the first leg of my first race, sailing from Charleston to Cape Town [South Africa]. The boats were slower in the nineties, and I was on my own in the ocean for 52 days. When I got to Cape Town and saw Table Mountain on the horizon, I was like, “Holy crap! I just did something really badass.” I knew the meaning of adventure—there’s nothing like it. To put how rare this is into perspective, there are over 3,000 people who have summited Mt. Everest and only

fornia to the East Coast for every race. I needed to live somewhere on the Atlantic. Being a professional sailor, it was kind of assumed that I would move to Rhode Island, but I didn’t want to live in a winter wonderland. I actually did some research on places that I thought may be interesting, and I tried to model where I was going to move after what San Diego was like when I was a kid. Charleston was it. The lifestyle, the demographics, the growth rate, and the housing development rate of Charleston are similar to those of San Diego in the ’70s and ’80s.

Brad: When I finished my first race, which began and ended in Charleston, I wanted to continue racing. That desire eventually led to my gaining the sponsorship of Tommy Hilfiger. At that point, I decided that the boats had become too big and unruly to transport from Cali-

Since you planted these roots in Charleston, though, your personal life has changed drastically; you’ve now divorced, remarried, and blended your family with Amy's. How did these changes come about? Brad: I was working for the Maserati sailing team, living in Italy and Spain off and on, while still calling Charleston

Recently, she noticed a butterfly emblem adorning the edge, so she called the manufacturer only to find that the butterfly represents the region in New Mexico—an area in the Southwest where monarch butterflies live in abundance—in which the table was made. home. We had a team house on Isle of Palms when we were here preparing for a speed-record attempt from New York to England. One night, we had just been working our tails off, and the guys were like, “We need to have some drinks and some good food.” I wasn’t in the mood to go out at all, but they were like, “Come on, Brad! It’s your home; show us around.” I was convinced, and the whole crew went to Red Drum. Amy: I was there with a half dozen of my friends having dinner, and in they walked. Brad: It always helps to have a group of really Adonis-looking, European-accented men walk in with you. I was just the old, gray-haired American of the group. Amy: It’s funny because my girls were like, “Whoa! Look

what just walked in the door.” We began to chat, and the European guys were all like 34 to 35 years old. I found the old man and decided I was going to talk to him. He was closer to my age. So, we just started up a conversation and realized that we were in the exact same place in our lives. It gave us something to talk about, and we wound up chatting all evening and becoming friends. Brad: It’s tough when you’re in the middle of a divorce and your kids are involved. We were going through a similar thing, and we became buddies. Our relationship took off from there, leading, eventually, to our wedding.

In Liew of Adventure Tell me a little bit about the wedding. Brad: The day was such a whirlwind. It’s so different putting together a second wedding, especially when you have the “BrAmy Bunch” going on. We were creating one family out of two families; we wanted our family to be part of the wedding. So the main idea was to have more of a party atmosphere that was small and intimate with just family and close friends. It wasn’t about pomp and circumstance, but about having a great time. Amy: We had all three of our children [Wyatt, Tate, and Sophie] who were all on Spring Break, and we wanted the whole day to be family-and-friend oriented. We actually got married in a church [James Island Baptist Church], so I had to let go and know that I would be the last person to arrive here at my house for the reception. It’s not an easy feat to have your own wedding at your own house. Our friends really stepped in and helped pull everything together. We are actually going on our honeymoon later in the summer. We’re going sailing in the British Virgin Isles. Is that something that the two of you like to do in your free time? Amy: I lived on a boat after college with my dad. He’s a boat person, but it was a motorboat. So, I have a lot of motorboat experience but not a lot of sailing experience. Brad is converting me. Brad: When I go sailing, I really go sailing. Our honeymoon is going to be a relaxing change of pace for me. Normally, when I own a sailboat, I buy it, I use it, and I sell it. It’s a business tool. We actually own a motorboat right now, which Amy and I both love. When we go boating, we run around with two or three kids on a tube, go fishing, and do what everyone else in Charleston does. Charleston really is a great place for kids to grow up and find their place. Do

The youngest children’s room used to be a den for the kids before Brad and Amy married. Amy describes, “When we turned it into their bedroom, they were like, ‘We don’t want to lose our den!’ Now, it has a den-bedroom, half-and-half vibe. They love it.”

you think that they’ll want to follow in your adventurous footsteps one day, Brad? Brad: I don’t think I will teach my kids to sail. There are two or three different mindsets about that. A couple of my good friends really started pushing their kids into the sport at a young age. A few of their children are All-American Collegiate sailors and a few of them never want to see a sailboat again in their lives. Wyatt, my youngest, hasn’t started at all. Tate, my daughter, has gone to sailing camp for two summers at the yacht club downtown. I never push it. If she decides she wants to do it, she goes and does it. If she doesn’t, it’s fine with me.

You two both seem to really love your kids. I see pictures of them all over the house, and they each have their own special space here. How has this home helped to create a stable environment for them to grow? Amy: I fell in love with I’On, especially since I was coming from Chicago. I lived there for 16 years. I woke up one day and said, “I’m done. I have to go home.” Home was the South, and where I wanted to live was Charleston. There were many amazing things about Chicago, and it defined who I was as a person somewhat. But it never felt like home. My daughter, Sophie, wasn’t allowed to even open the

In Liew of Adventure front door because we lived in the middle of the city. To be in this atmosphere in I’On now, in a neighborhood where kids are running up and down the street and biking to the tennis club, is great for Sophie. All three of our children, with their three separate ages [8, 11, and 14], are so happy. Brad: I tell them to stop watching TV and just go—get out and play. A lot of people say that living in I’On is like living in Pleasantville because it’s so perfectly Pleasantville-ish, but it really works well. Amy: It’s so opposite of the way Sophie was growing up in Chicago. I wanted her to have this experience of living in an idyllic neighborhood, and that’s what this feels like. You guys have clearly created a beautiful home for your kids and for yourselves. What are your favorite parts of the house? Amy: The back porch is our spot. We’re both outdoorsy people, and that would have to be our favorite part of the house. We also love to entertain. The floors are heart-of-pine hardwood, and they’re very delicate. If you look at the floor in the kitchen between the refrigerator and the island, it is by far the most torn-up. That’s where we always are! Brad is an amazing cook, and I would say that we have friends over for dinner (besides our children) at least two times a week. Even if it’s just the two of us, we sit around that island and cook together. It’s kind of a nightly thing; we’ll open a bottle of wine and spend an hour making a nice meal. Enjoying a simple (and delicious) meal together is a far cry from the rugged lifestyle that incorporated freeze-dried suppers into your daily diet, Brad. How have you come to enjoy settling down a little? Brad: I’m ready to just live like everybody else now, I think. My jobs have taken their toll on me, and my kids have really started the slowing-down process. I used to say I was never going to live past 40; now I’m 45 saying, “Wow, it really hurts sometimes in the morning when I wake up.” I need to chill out and start being a little more normal.

I still don’t think I would call your life normal. You’re flying airplanes again, right? Brad: Yes. I am actually a contract pilot, meaning I get hired by the day to fly. I primarily fly with a local company, Davis Air. I like to keep my aviation work flexible because I do different speaking opportunities, help Amy with her Stella and Dot business some, and would like to complete other smaller boat races here and there as they come up. I’m an instructor as well, and there are other little parts of aviation that I can plug into just by the nature of the licenses and the ratings that I hold. I can do a little bit of everything in aviation, like I do in life. [laughs] What do you expect life to be like now that you’re not sailing or flying as much as before?

104

CH+D • Summer 2013

Brad: Our life now will be peppered with adventure. Some races I’ll do, some I won’t. We’re rebuilding our adulthood, and sometimes things happen that you don’t expect—some good, some bad, some surprising, and some not surprising. Going at marriage a second time with kids involved, you tend to be much more deliberate about your decisions, rather than just being young and making quick choices. There’s a lot of discussion about all of this for us. We want a routine that focuses on rebuilding for a long-term future. I’ve always been about the next around-the-world race, but now, a lot of it is about a steady lifestyle that allows for stability and confidence in our kids and each other. Amy: We want to be stable but never boring. Brad: That’s striving for. ✧

Along with some very lucky tournament sponsors, around 200 local CH+D magazine readers experienced this year’s six Family Circle Cup Courtside Suites at an open house held right before the annual draw party. The visions of four interior designers (with the help of four furniture providers), every suite uniquely captured the essence of tennis culture–refined yet relaxed. Overlooking the stadium court, we sat down with each of the designers to discuss her suite’s style and inspiration. Take a moment to scan the following QR codes to learn firsthand what the designers had to say about their atypical challenge.

First Things

First he first step of the building process is hiring a set of professionals to carry out your plans; this could be some combination of a builder, an architect, an interior designer, or a residential designer. Do some research, make a list of professionals whose work you like, set up meetings with the top contenders, and make sure their prices match your budget. After your meetings, choose people that you actually like (remember, these are the faces you’ll be seeing every day for the next year). From there, you will begin to develop a plan. This whole process can take anywhere from two to ten months.

T

To begin your search, you can turn to page 110 and page 224 for a list of reputable architects, builders, interior designers, and residential designers.

Groundbreaking

(Months 1 & 2)

After the plans are set, your builder will start by pulling a permit for your home (which takes about a month). Then, construction will begin. At this stage, you should make final decisions about your foundation and crawl space, your elevator (if applicable), your building supply company, and your windows and doors. Are hurricane-resistant windows worth the extra cost? “The reward is far higher than the price, and they are crucial to have in the case of an emergency. In addition, they are great products for muffling outside sound, adding extra UV protection, safeguarding against intruders, and reducing insurance premiums.”

“If you desire to age in place and cannot access the master suite and living room without negotiating stairs, then an elevator should be incorporated into the plan to extend the home’s useful life.”

Framing & Rough Mechanicals

(Months 3 & 4)

After the foundation is in place, the construction team will begin installing the frame of the building, the rough plumbing, the rough electrical, the HVAC system, fireplaces, generators, and the audio-video wiring. At this point, you’ll need to know the basics: how many sinks you want in each bathroom, where you’ll want your lighting fixtures, and if you’ll want whole-house audio. However, the specifics (like styles, colors, and models) of these items won’t need to be confirmed until a few months later.

Advice from the Pros

Would you recommend that all homes implement Cat-5 wiring even if the owners aren’t planning to install an advanced audio/video system?

How do I know what size HVAC unit to purchase?

Services to Consider: Audio/Video and Structured Wiring

Where to Shop: Fireplaces

"Yes. The biggest advantage of pre-wiring Cat-5 during construction is the savings of future installation services. DRYING IN

(Months 5 & 6)

Once the roof and siding are set in place, the home is considered to be dried in, meaning that if you stand inside the house, you’re safe from the elements. During this phase, you must choose a roofing material, insulation, exterior finishes, and shutters (which are installed after the exterior painting is complete).

Advice from the Pros

Do you recommend that I upgrade and use higher quality insulation than the standard fiberglass option?

How does my roof material affect my energy consumption?

“Yes. High-quality insulation will make your home more comfortable by helping to maintain even temperatures throughout the home. Adding good insulation reduces the amount of heating and cooling needed and shrinks utility bills.”

“Your roof is the largest contributor to high energy bills due to the large, exposed surface. Roof temperatures can reach 165 degrees, raising the attic temperature to nearly 130 degrees and causing the HVAC unit to work overtime. This will spike costs. Amerisips offers a building solution for this problem.”

FINISHES

(Months 7 & 8)

The finishing stage is where a bulk of your decisions must be made. More often than not, the kitchen layout has been determined in the architectural design phase. If it has not been, you will want to consider your kitchen layout. In addition, you should select your wall coverings, flooring, tile, trim, plumbing fixtures, lighting, decorative hardware, garage doors, cabinetry, shower enclosures, appliances, and countertops. With all of these choices to make, be prepared for the unexpected—some items may be backordered, no longer available, or hand-crafted.

Advice from the Pros

Is wallpaper a good choice for my home?

How do I decide between hardwood flooring and carpet?

"Yes. I think people who had wallpaper years ago are afraid of it, remembering the dated designs. But, wallpaper is not the same today. The variety is endless from traditional designs to modern, fun patterns and interesting textures.”

“Carpeting is generally the less expensive option. Think about the foot traffic the floor will receive; wood is better for higher usage areas. Consider that carpet has more noise-quieting properties than wood floors. Finally, choose what you like aesthetically.” Cynthia Zimmerman Zimmerman Interiors / (843) 971-6880 / zimmermaninteriors.net

DESIGN DETAILS

(Months 9 & 10)

The final little design touches in a home make it exude your family’s style and personality. In this stage, you’ll work closely with your interior designer (if you have one) to pick out the perfect accessories and décor to punctuate your space. This is also a good time to incorporate any organizational systems for closets and garages.

Advice from the Pros

What color schemes are in style this year?

How do I incorporate items that I already have into a new interior design?

“Recently, we have done crisp whites, soft creams, and soothing grays for the backdrop of our interiors, adding hints of coastal colors for personality and charm. The love of blues and greens seems more prevalent then ever." Anita King & The Ink Team Ink Architecture and Interiors / (843) 882-7810 / inkarchitecturellc.com

“If a particular piece is important to you, consider creating your entire design around that one piece. Or, ask yourself if the funds to reupholster or refinish are in your budget. If the money is there, recreate the furniture to fit the new design.” Melissa Hunter MW Hunter Custom Interiors / (843) 556-4939

MOVE-IN WEEK

(Month 11)

As a final step, make sure that your painter comes back to do one final touch up. You will receive a Certificate of Occupancy before you move in, verifying that the home is officially yours and livable. Now is the time to set up your insurance policy and hook up your electricity or natural gas line. Then, speak with your moving company and set a day and time to pack up your things and transport them to your new home. Finally, unpack, relax, and enjoy every shopping choice you made over the last year.

Advice from the Pros

What final inspections and documents are needed before I can move into my new home?

What is a builder’s risk insurance policy, and am I required to have one?

“To move in, you will need a Certificate of Occupancy; an Energy Compliance Form; an Elevation Certificate (for a flood zone); a Termite Certificate; homeowners insurance; and final inspection documents for the HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.”

“Builder’s risk insurance provides coverage for the builder and property owner while the home is being built, insuring the structure itself and the installed contents. Most builders and lenders will require it, but even if they do not, it’s highly recommended.”

t’s been a long wait, but summer is finally here. The trees, shrubs, and bulbs are blooming; the grills are stocked with tasty fare; and the pools are filled to the brim with all manner of swimmers. It’s a fact…Charleston residents like to take advantage of their beautiful surroundings. Not all backyards are fit for a party, though. If your yard needs some enhancement, the following pages will offer you a metaphorical peek over the fence at what your Lowcountry neighbors have crafted within their slices of paradise. Stressless® living – it’s all about comfort There are many reasons why Stressless® is the most comfortable line of furniture in existence. We could tell you how each recliner, sofa and home theater piece is innovatively designed, in Norway, from the inside out for unmatched comfort. Or that our recliners come in multiple sizes to fit all body types. We could also mention Stressless® is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. But none of these things adequately conveys what the Stressless® line is capable of. There is only one way to understand the feeling of total and utter luxury. You have to sit in one. Then you will know what Stressless® living truly is: the perfect fusion of support, beauty and function. Because when it comes to comfort, we are uncompromising.

When chosen to construct a dream home in Naples, Florida, the builder needed materials up to the task – functional products with strength to withstand extreme conditions and beauty to inspire. He called the people of CEMEX. The vision began to take form with a concrete block shell for durability, and the selection of a smooth stucco finish for timeless beauty. A three-color blend of CEMEX decorative pavers provided an elegant finishing touch, turning the challenge of building the client’s dream home into a stroll on the beach.

The Elements of Hurricane Home Preparedness As another hurricane season approaches, there is a lot of worry (but very little action) about how to prevent property damage. We’ve included eight easy and essential elements of hurricane home preparedness that will help ease your mind before a storm and, as an added bonus, increase your home’s value. So, protect your home from the elements…by investing in some of the elements we recommend.

1

Insulating the roof sheathing in the attic with closed-cell spray foam structurally enhances the strength and sturdiness of your home. It provides insulation value, air-barrier characteristics, and moisture control features.

Who can help me with closed-cell spray foam insulation? Airtight of Charleston airtightinsulation.com (843) 225-5833 Ecofoam ecofoaminsulation.com (843) 645-2300 Energy One America energyoneamerica.com (843) 388-6260

2

Replace your roofing with windresistant shingles or metal roofing. Add an extra layer of protection with a thermoplastic membrane and save on insurance costs.

Mister Sparky mistersparky.com (843) 225-5998 Smiths Heating & Air Conditioning smithshvac.com (843) 552-3772

4

Invest in permanent hurricane shutters or window film. Should windows shatter, the house will be exposed to flying debris.

5

Doors and windows are major points of weakness during a storm. Invest in quality doors and windows.

{ 2013 Room Makeover Revealed }

(above left) Ethan Allen’s Interior Designer Kathy Evans with Homeowners Phil and Allison Padgett of Mt. Pleasant (above right) The couple’s newly redesigned living room is perfect for chatting by the fire and watching television in the evenings.

M

T. PLEASANT—At January’s Custom Home + Remodel Show, we held a grand-prize drawing for a $10,000 Room Makeover, and local homeowners Phil and Allison Padgett of Mt. Pleasant won the prize package. After moving into their first home, Phil and Allison

had invested most of their money into mechanical repairs—like a new HVAC system—leaving them with a very small budget for home décor. However, with the help of Kathy Evans, an experienced interior designer from Ethan Allen, the couple was able to transform their living room into a cozy, chic place for relaxing

each evening and entertaining friends. The $10,000 Room Makeover would not have been possible without the help of the following local companies. We extend our gratitude for their willingness to make these giveaways available to Lowcountry homeowners.

HOME+DESIGN NEWS ★ Charleston Home + Design Announces Winner of $5,500 Closet Organizing Makeover and $2,000 Garage Organizing Makeover

D

ANIEL ISLAND—In conjunction with the Charleston Home + Design Show on Daniel Island, CH+D hosted two giveaways: the $5,500 Closet Organizing Makeover and the $2,000 Garage Organizing Makeover. At the show, visitors entered to win the Closet Organizing Makeover by filling out ballots. The draw revealed the winner to be Michelle Lackey of Daniel Island. Michelle’s prize package includes 20 hours of organizing services from Jennifer Truesdale of STR8N UP, a new murphy wall bed from HWC Custom Cabinetry, and a custom closet system from Advanced Window Fashions. In addition, we created a Facebook competition for a $2,000 Garage Organizing Makeover with the help of the Post and Courier. Our Facebook followers submitted photos of their incredibly messy garages. Rob Davis’s submission received the most likes, winning the contest by a landslide. His prize features a brand-new garage organizing system from Monkey Bars for his Mt. Pleasant home.

(above) Larry McCrae of Advanced Window Fashions, Megan Busch of Charleston Home + Design magazine, Jennifer Truesdale of Str8n Up, and Donna and Jay Miller of HWC Custom Cabinetry with Winner Michelle Lackey, Husband John, and Son Nicholai.

T. PLEASANT—After nine years of business in Mt. Pleasant, Victoria’s Furniture is closing and moving to a larger location. While they are still searching for a new, bigger storefront, they encourage all to visit their sister stores: Lowcountry Consignments off Highway 41 and their newest location, Charleston Consignment Company (in the neck area at the corner of Isabella and North Nassau). Local Company Completes Work on Crosstown

D

OWNTOWN—Championed by Mayor Joe Riley’s desire to fix the excessive flooding plaguing the peninsula’s busiest byway, the Crosstown Beautification Project included new drainage systems and an upgraded median, featuring new, lush landscaping. Stone Casting, a company specializing in custom stone work, created the planters that

hold the freshly planted trees and flowers. Each planter was hand constructed and built to last for decades, ensuring that the Crosstown remains a beautiful gateway to the Holy City. For more information, call Stone Casting at (843) 852-9800 or visit stonecastinginc.com.

As one of the most traversed highways in Charleston, the Crosstown needed some sprucing up. The planters holding the new foliage were custom crafted by Stone Casting.

Lowcountry Concrete Technology Introduces Reflective Concrete Flooring

C

HARLESTON—Lowcountry Concrete Technology, a budding local business, specializes in transforming plain concrete into a surface with style. To do this, regular concrete receives a protective, colored coat. (Lowcountry Concrete Technology offers over 20 different colors!) In addition, a reflective finish can be added to the concrete coating to give the material a glowing sheen. Brett Baisden, owner of the company, explains that the reflective product is mixed into their Rapid Armor sealer to make the floor appear glossy. The coating is safe on any type of indoor concrete and on shaded, outdoor installations. The coating not only protects the surface from damage, but also improves the overall aesthetic. For more information, call Lowcountry Concrete Technology at (843) 469-2566 or visit designcti.com.

Amerisips Installs Energy-Efficient Solar Shingles on Their Free Energy Living Custom Homes

J

Tina and Steve Bostic of Amerisips

OHNS ISLAND—Local homebuilder Amerisips began constructing free-energy-living custom homes last year, and in order to build the most green-conscious houses available, they chose to install Apollo Solar Roofing Systems (manufactured by CertainTeed) on all of their projects. Praising the product, Steve Bostic of Amerisips said, “The roofing system is integral to achieving the energy performance that we strive for in our free-energyliving homes due to its ability to harness the sun’s rays and

generate free energy. In addition, the system’s panels are much thinner and integrate with the roof better than traditional solar panels. This creates a high-performance solar roof without sacrificing aesthetics.” The new roofing system allows every Amerisips client to be as green-conscious as possible without compromising performance over appearance. For more information, call Amerisips at (843) 637-4311 or visit amerisips.com.

Solartek Becomes Edgewater Energy Services

(above) The Edgewater Energy Services Team at a Recent Hanahan Project (right) Although they’ve split from the national SolarTEK franchise, Edgewater still provides the same quality solar panels powering homes all over the Lowcountry.

H A R L E S T O N — S o l a r tek of Charleston has recently decided to split from the original franchise, using the opportunity to cater more to a local clientele. The experts at Solartek saw a great opportunity to become the Lowcountry’s one-stop shop for all energy-saving home improvements, so they became Edgewater Energy Services. The company can place solar panels on your roof to generate electricity, and they offer energy conservation products such as water heaters, generators, and attic insulation. Edgewater’s Kevin Crout notes, “The biggest benefit will be the cost savings that we will pass on to our clients. We have now established a relationship with local suppliers that allows us to save on shipping and prices.” The employees at Edgewater are looking forward to serving the Lowcountry in a new capacity. For more information, call Edgewater Energy Services at (843)937-9999 or visit edgewaterenergysc.com.

LOOSE ENDS

Coffee Table Remix By: Megan J. Busch While shopping at the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity ReStore, my husband and I stumbled upon a sturdy, wooden coffee table that I knew I could refurbish into a beautiful centerpiece for our living room. We promptly purchased the table for 25 dollars— what a steal! (I later found the original price tag showing that the piece once cost 260 dollars.) By adding a little Chalk Paint™ from Charleston Revisions and new knobs from Pier1, I transformed the old, second-hand table into something a bit more modern. Step 1: Choosing Paint and Decorative Hardware For the coffee table, I needed roughly a half-can of Chalk Paint™, so I went to Charleston Revisions and chose my color: Graphite. Laurie Cooper, owner of the eclectic shop, said that it was one of the most popular colors since gray is so in-style right now. Because I wanted a more modern look (as opposed to the rustic look many choose to achieve with Chalk Paint™), Laurie recommended that I use a clear wax over the base coat of paint. Leaving there, I went to Pier1 to choose two ceramic knobs to complement the new gray color. Step 2: Gathering Supplies I needed a rough sponge, a bowl full of water and mild soap (I used simple dish soap), a foam paint roller, a cloth to apply the wax (I used one of my husband’s old tee shirts, and it worked flawlessly), decorative hardware, and of course, Chalk Paint™ and Soft Wax. Step 3: Cleaning and Painting To start my project, I began by cleaning all the surfaces of the coffee table with the sponge and soapy water. Then, I painted it using the roller and the Graphite paint. Chalk Paint™ can be applied to almost any surface without sanding or priming, so I was able to skip those steps. I applied two coats of paint to all sides of the table, a quick process that took less than two hours. Step 4: Waxing I allowed the paint to dry overnight. The next evening, I applied a very thin layer of wax. Step 5: Adding Flair Once the wax no longer felt tacky, I added the decorative knobs, creating (what felt like) a brand-new addition to our little home.
