MEET + GREET

Vintage Inspired Home DĂ©cor Meet best friends, Elyse Witt and Zuhal Bulut. They started Zuma to share their passion for vintage Turkish

Written by Alli Steinke | Photography by Ebony Ellis

rugs and decorative accents with Lowcountry homeowners.

What inspired you to start Zuma?

We balance each other out and make a great team. Both of us are obsessed with the history, designs, and stories behind vintage Turkish rugs. Our love of Turkish textiles is truly what inspired us to create Zuma.

How did you determine what products you were going to carry?

Initially, we bought pieces we personally loved and knew people would respond well to. Our clients began requesting certain colors and sizes which led us to begin purchasing products based on demand as well.

How do you select what products to bring back here to sell to your customers?

We select rugs based on quality, design, and colorways. These are products we are 66 • CH+D • Spring 2022

drawn to as well as ones we know there’s a demand for. Most recently, we began sourcing decorative accents such as olive jars, glass jugs, and goods that pair well with our selection of rugs. Damaged rugs can be recycled to live on in new products such as pillows, bags, shoes, and ottomans. We love designing and creating items that give the stories of these rugs a new life.

What’s the best way to care for the rugs?

The best way to clean a vintage Turkish rug is to spot clean with cold water or a natural detergent if needed. We recommend blotting any spills rather than scrubbing, and using the floor setting of your vacuum as it’s more gentle on rugs. We are now working with

Fiber-Seal of Charleston and highly recommend them to protect your rugs to ensure their longevity, giving rug owners peace of mind.

What’s next for Zuma?

Stay tuned for some exciting new launches coming soon. We are thrilled to carry custom home decor products we know our customers are going to love as much as we do. For more information, call Zuma at (843) 452-1117 or visit zumaimports.com.

Perfect Picks from the Porch Pros Randall and Jake with Palm Casual Outdoor Furniture help readers decide just what to add to their outdoor living spaces.

Jake Said: All of our products are able to be placed outside and forgotten about regardless of the weather. Our composite furniture is great no matter if you are a seasonal or full-time resident of Charleston.

Randall Said: Best Furniture for the Lowcountry?

Wicker and aluminum hold up exceptionally well with our lifetime service warranty. We include reweaving wicker, touching up paint on the aluminum, restuffing cushions that can be cleaned with 100% bleach.

A porch is directly connected and perfect to relax while entertaining friends and family and not being exposed to the harsh Charleston elements, while being screened or unscreened.

Sun Deck or Sleeping Porch?

A sun deck can be any area that is next to a swimming pool or off of an uncovered porch where you can use chaise loungers to enjoy the sun by day and stars by night.

I personally like the wicker collections called QDF, which stands for Quick Dry Foam. QDF has built-in cushions. My favorite chaise lounge are our aluminum ones because they are lightweight, stackable, affordable, and very customizable to fit different pool schemes.

Formula for the Perfect Outdoor Space?

I like a mixture of materials, including warm and cool colors to make the space feel more relaxed and not overpowering. My favorite thing to use poolside is the Teak sling chaise loungers because of the low maintenance and quick dry time after summer showers and in between swimmers.

HOMEWORK

At Home with Erin Bassily of

Lowcountry Lighting Studio Lynn Galloway and Erin Bassily invites Charleston Home + Design readers into the home where Lowcountry Lighting Studio first began.

Erin and her husband bought their Mount Pleasant home in December of 2015. It was originally built in 2005, and needed a serious makeover. She decided to call her friend Lynn Galloway, owner of J. James Interiors for assistance. Erin wanted a pretty house that showed off her style but more importantly she needed functionality, since she had very young children. Throughout the renovation process, Lynn and Erin quickly bonded over their creative style and working relationship that they decided to partner up and open Lowcountry Lighting Studio.

4. Master Bedroom

The dining room, which showcases Foster Creek in the background was the first room to receive a new look. “When I walk into this house, the first thing I see is the view. We didn’t want to distract from this view,” Lynn says. While over-sized windows border the space and provide a lot of natural light, adding an opaque beaded chandelier that blends well with the walls and furniture ties the whole space together. “Almost every fixture in this house is see through, which was done purposefully. We wanted something that felt stylish yet lightweight,” Erin adds.

With all new white cabinets, backsplash, island, and countertops in the kitchen, adding two open-designed, gold lighting fixtures hanging in the middle of the space was the right move. “These lighting fixtures bring all the gold details together. Every room should flow into the next, and lighting is the way to do this,” Lynn explains.

Lynn placed their best-selling, Pippy Flush Mount with brass detailing in the living room area, which is the first space you see when you enter the house. “It’s not too traditional or too modern. It’s unique enough where it can stand out or blend in,” Lynn describes. The living room is where Erin’s family congregates, so having a lighting fixture that doesn’t hang down but can still add personality was super important.

The master bedroom was decorated with two large blue and white bedside lamps and matching mixed metal mirrors to add symmetry. Lynn added a blue beaded chandelier to add a pop of color into this predominately white space, as well as to tie in the other blue hues. This chandelier also resembles the one used in the dining room, which highlights how lighting fixtures are important to the flow of the home.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

(above) Will Smith and his crew at their St. Matthews, SC iron workshop.

Iron Legacy Will Smith of Lowcountry Iron and Woodworks prides himself on creating oneof-a-kind iron gates, railings, and metalwork decor for homeowners over twenty years.

The Craftsman Will Smith spent most of his life working in the iron and steel industry. At the age of 16, he began working at an ornamental shop where he was first introduced to designing with iron. A few years later, he began constructing steel buildings. Add working in a shipyard and a cement plant, Will had all the tools he needed to start his own business and offer high-quality, custom-made iron detailing for Lowcountry homeowners.

His Process When a client calls for a project, Will schedules a meeting with them at the location to see the scope of the project, as well as to get an exact idea of what the client truly wants. Every job is different. “If a client wants handrails on their front porch, we have to figure out what kind of handrails they want. Do they want something more modern, or something more traditional? Do they want aluminum, stainless steel, or bronze material? What is their budget?” From there, Will and his crew will measure out the installation area using contour gauges for curves and corners. Back at their St. Matthew, SC iron workshop, iron beams are being welded while designs are being forged until cherry red, placed on an anvil, and beaten into shape using a cross peen hammer, repeating every five minutes. If the client’s request requires a unique design such as a heron, butterfly, or mermaid, Will has been known to hand draw the design before it is cut from the iron. When everything is complete, it is transported to the location and personally installed by Lowcountry Iron and Woodworks.

76 • CH+D • Spring 2022

His Philosophy Creating work that truly means something to Will’s clients is of utmost importance. “People will repaint their houses or replace their tiles, but what we are creating will stay forever. Rarely, will you ever see work like ours taken down.” Will can recall most of the work he has forged over the past 20 years, like the gate and angel scroll he created for a man who built a cemetery for his late wife, or the airplane mailbox he designed for a pilot. “My clients are going to be looking at my work for the rest of their lives. I want them to enjoy what they are looking at.” For more information, call Lowcountry Iron and Woodworks at (803) 655-5653.

GREENHOUSE

Green Home Green Wallet The greener the home, the greener your wallet. Find money saving ways to gear up for Spring from these local home professionals.

How can I save on my energy bill?

When is it Time for Air Conditioning Maintenance?

The answer starts with a home energy assessment. Environmental Solutions and Services (ESS) will take a detailed look at how your home consumes energy and determine whether there’s a way to use less.

Many homeowners like to do a spring A/C tune-up, to make sure your system is running efficiently and is ready for the oppressive Lowcountry heat and humidity. Some signs your A/C needs maintenance are:

Suggestions may include sealing your air ducts, encapsulating your crawl space, getting new windows, and more.

• It’s been a year or more since last service. A/C systems work best when maintained once a year. •You had problems with your A/C last year. •Unusually high energy bills.

Most of the time, ESS will be able to do the work to make your home more efficient. If they can’t, they’ll always send you to reliable companies they have worked with for many years. For more information, call Environmental Solutions and Services at (843) 881-0027 or visit essforcleanair.com.

Maintenance includes inspecting entire system, cleaning system where dust and debris collect, changing your filters and testing each component against manufacturer's standards. For more information, call C&C Myers at 843-881-7588 or visit ccmyersservice.com.

Enduring Excellence Buying something that brings you happiness and built to last is something everyone seeks. In our “throw-away” culture, finding a product that will not have to be produced in the future not only saves you money but reduces the energy costs related to manufacturing plus the impact of shipping a product by truck. Kenneth Lynch and Sons fabricates heirloom quality outdoor furniture, statuary, sundials, planters and more that enhance any Southern space. Expect their products to endure through the Lowcountry’s heat, humidity and salty air. A lasting example of the craftsmanship of Kenneth Lynch and Sons is the renowned Statue of Liberty and Chrysler Building. Kenneth Lynch was hired in 1926-1927 to successfully make repairs to the leaking Lady Liberty and helped create the rounded edges and contours of the Heroic Eagles on the Chrysler Building in 1928, which are still in place today. H2OME

Optimal Materials Heat and humidity can often be damaging to your home. Consider these materials while working on your outdoor spaces. Superior Stone Surface

Photography by Paige Taylor

A durable hardscape complements your landscape, making your yard even more beautiful. The hardscape elements selected for your outdoor living space should be able to withstand the harsh heat and moisture that are prevalent in the Lowcountry. Natural stone is one option. SiteOne Landscape Supply uses natural stone for a variety of hardscape elements including patios, retaining walls, driveways, and more. Not only does natural stone look beautiful throughout the yard, but it’s also more environmentally friendly and beneficial for landscapes. Natural stone also helps mitigate water, acting as a natural waterway to redirect runoff into drier areas of the yard. You can’t forget, natural stone requires essentially no maintenance and will typically last a lifetime. For more information, call SiteOne Landscape Supply at (843) 769-5566 or visit siteone.com.

Prime Porcelain Another material perfect for outdoor living spaces is porcelain, available in a wide range of colors, patterns, and textures. It's a great option year-round as it doesn’t crack in freezing temperatures. It's durable not only during the Spring and Summer, but also during the cooler winter months. The density and smooth texture of porcelain makes it easier to clean plus it's more reliable than similar products like ceramic. Porcelain makes for a better option especially for high traffic areas like outdoor living spaces. For more information, call Melcer Tile at (843) 744-5345 or visit melcertile.com.

TOP FIVE

What to Ask Before Starting a Tile Project Two leading Lowcountry tile experts, Charleston Backsplash and Flooring Factory provide their top five questions that should be asked when starting a tile project.

Where do I begin?

1

First, start with some simple measurements of the area to be tiled. Secondly, take those measurements and some favorite inspiration photos with you to a tile retailer. Most retailers have designers that can help you select materials. Next, ask a tile installer whose skill and focus matches your project scope to visit your home. They can help guide you through the rest of the process.

Who designs, sells, or installs the tile?

2

Charleston Backsplash explains that it’s important to know what each company in the delivery chain can provide to you. Tile designers and retailers typically don’t perform installations. However, choosing an installer with experience and who has a close working relationship with the designer/ retailer is critical for smooth project execution.

How often should grout be sealed?

3

Written by Paige Taylor | Photography by Callie Cranford | Project by Flooring Factory

The experts at Flooring Factory say most grout manufacturers require that their grout gets sealed once a year, but for easy maintenance most professionals will recommend sealing it every 6 months. Due to grout being naturally porous, this will further prevent any mold / mildew growth. Grout sealing doesn’t apply to Epoxy grout because epoxy itself is a waterproof chemical.

4 5

Is tile easy to maintain? Tile maintenance varies on the type of tile material. Porcelain and ceramic tile are easy to care for as they can be cleaned by most cleaning products which won’t damage the material; but in the case of a natural stone such as marble, it must be resealed once a year.

What factors go into the price of a tile job?

For more information, call Charleston Backsplash at (843) 894-3230 or visit charlestonbacksplash.com For more information, call Flooring Factory at (843) 790-4354 or visit flooringfactorysc.com.

82 • CH+D • Spring 2022

Prices are dependent upon total area and complexity. For example, installing a herringbone layout requires much more time and tile than a typical subway pattern. However, interesting layout patterns can really add value and appeal to your home. Charleston Backsplash advises to talk to an installer when you begin your project so you can get a better estimate of the final cost.

LEARNING THE LINGO

Form & Function Choosing the right style cabinetry is just as important as their function when it comes to a remodel. Familiarize yourself with industry language to better communicate your vision and goals for your project.

Slab/Flat Panel

A streamlined look is easily achieved when installing slab or flat panel cabinetry. Without ornamentation or beveling, it is a simple way to create a midcentury modern look.

Shaker

Similar to the slab panels but with more detail, this style of door is as popular as it gets, especially when going for a modern farmhouse aesthetic.

Contemporary

Typically hardware free, contemporary cabinets are marked by an absence of ornamentation and usually 84 • CH+D • Spring 2022

selected for their sleek simplicity. They almost blend right into the wall.

Glass Front

As the name suggests, glass front cabinets are completely see-through and often are mixed in with additional styles of cabinetry. This style is ideal storage for the glassware or fine china, which adds a decorative element to this storage solution.

Traditional

This style is characterized by raised panels, beadboard details, and other flourishes that are more popular in a dark wood or a classic maple.

How did you get started in the remodeling business? When my husband, Kyle and I renovated our first home, I posted daily progress updates on social media and we started to gain a little bit of a following. We began to receive so many requests from friends and followers that we decided to dive in head first, founding Polished Renovations and Design.

How would you describe your design philosophy? Design isn’t about incorporating everything. It’s about clearing out the superfluous and figuring out exactly what the client will use in the space, and how they’ll use the spaces we create. I’m here to think outside of their everyday box. It isn’t just about making something functional or making something aesthetically pleasing; a great design finds the balance between the two. I am my client’s interpreter for how their use of their space will translate into the new design. Design should also be intentional. Every space should be designed with a specific purpose. Lastly, good design should be an experience, like breathing in fresh air.

What is your favorite kind of renovation or space to design? When we’re remodeling someone’s home, it’s always fun to rework the existing layout and completely redefine the space to achieve our client’s goals. Kyle and I are both former professional chefs, so kitchens hold a special place in my heart. There are so many unique ways to organize the various stations of your kitchen, and I love being able to guide my clients through the entire design process in a way that not only gets them the aesthetic they’re looking for, but also creates an intentionally organized space. ARCHITECT:

Liz Baker T R A N S L AT I O N S D E S I G N S T U D I O

What is your favorite part about being an architect? I love translating my clients' ideas and dreams into reality. My very favorite part of the entire process is the first time my clients see the front facade of their future home. It is so fun to see their reaction.

What is the greatest piece of advice another architect has given you? I was fortunate to study under Architect, Stephen Fuller for 10 years. He said that a home should be a direct reflection of the family that lives there. It should enhance how they live their everyday lives and make their lives better. For example, a compartmentalized home with a lot of rooms will result in a family that scatters about away from each other, whereas an open plan with defined openings to differentiate the rooms allows for a family that is still together even when carrying on varying activities.

How do you overcome challenges that arise during a project? I look at challenges as opportunities. A part of a home that previously has only glanced over is now studied in a higher level of detail. It often results in a unique design element that many would guess was part of the original plan.

INTERIOR DESIGNER

Shay Patterson RIVERSIDE DESIGNERS

How would you describe your design philosophy or approach? All of my projects range in design based on the clients personal style, the architecture of the home and the overall aesthetic we want to achieve. My design philosophy is to reinvent my clients personal style in a new, fresh way. I like to incorporate colors they love with new finishes and textures that push them outside of their comfort zone.

In your opinion, what are the most important elements of interior design? The most important elements of interior design is the use of space and the balance of color and finishes. I am all about function. If a room is not laid out properly it will not live well. For a room to feel balanced, the layout and the placement of color is essential.

What are some common challenges faced when designing a home in Charleston? As a native Charlestonian, Charleston style is what I was raised to know and love. Most of my clients are looking for a fresh, clean coastal style that is different than the darker, heavier interiors they had in the past. We have beautiful waterways and coastal backdrops that play a huge role in the interior. I choose finishes that complement the textures and color tones naturally surrounding the home instead of contrasting and competing with them. STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Symmetry Meets Storage Thomas Lauderdale of Advanced Kitchen Designs describes how his desire for a more symmetrical kitchen turned into a beautiful renovation filled with uniquely designed storage space.

The Setting: When considering common storage spaces we think of closets, cabinets, wall racks, baskets, or trunks. Finding little homes for all your things can be the most liberating part of the organization process. However, when your current space does not provide you with the functionality needed to thrive, your things then can be found on countertops, the closet floor, or the coffee table. We all understand the headache this can bring, especially in an active room like the kitchen.

The Problem: Thomas began to renovate his own kitchen after he realized it did not provide him and his family the balance they needed. “The original kitchen lacked symmetry, storage, and an eating space,” Thomas explains. The Lauderdale family also enjoy entertaining guests and wanted to create an additional space off of the kitchen that could be used and enjoyed by family and friends, without the clutter.

Written by Paige Taylor • Photograph by Callie Cranford

The Solution:

94 • CH+D • Spring 2022

Achieving symmetry was a game changer in this kitchen renovation. Adding wooden panels around the fridge mirroring the pantry on the far left, not only provided balance but also hidden storage. Thomas elongated the kitchen island in order to provide more countertop space and then attached a four person breakfast table on the side. These simple additions add cohesiveness to the entire kitchen.

Once the initial kitchen renovation was complete, Thomas added a custom-built dry bar perfect for hosting parties. Chevron pattern open shelving with adjustable center shelves were built on top of the dry bar to store wine and spirits, as well as cocktail glasses and tools. The final touch to this space was the full extension drawers, which were built between the beer and wine coolers to showcase another seamless way for easy storage. Spartina Landscape Contractors

Spartina works on both hardscapes and landscapes. Talk about that process.

“

We do all of the earth work and dirt work that people associate with landscaping. We also do a good amount of slab work as well as stone, brick and concrete paver patios. Tabby concrete is really popular right now so we do a lot of that as well. Another thing we’ve been doing, is more brick restoration for these older homes in the area. The brick is in great condition but we come in and re-claim and reinstall it to breathe some new life into it. Part of our process is free on site estimates. A lot of folks don’t necessarily know exactly what they want so that first meeting is crucial to determining what will happen with the rest of the project. We show them what their options are for their landscape and hardscape, and often by the end of the first meeting they’ll have an idea on pricing so they can make adjustments based on their budget.

There’s a utilitarian purpose of a backsplash, however, many people want a backsplash to be a decorative accent. What does your process look like?

“

When we install a backsplash, we want to make sure we’re being the least disruptive as possible. We try very hard to finish a typical backsplash in one day. Our process is designed specifically for backsplashes so we can complete a clean, quality job and return the use of our customer’s kitchen back to them as soon as possible. As for design, we often see homeowners select white subway tile for its utilitarian advantages and neutrality. However, I would like to remind homeowners that there are thousands of options out there that can add a more unique and artistic touch to a space. Regardless of what you choose, attention to detail is critical on our end to ensure you’re happy with the final product.

Talk a bit about some of the spaces you are able to furnish for Lowcountry homeowners.

“

We do dining rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms. We’re always ready to go visit a potential client’s home to see the space and provide recommendations. We’ve also done a lot of Airbnbs lately. We’re lucky enough to have really great working relationships with a lot of vendors throughout the country; so we do a good amount of short term rentals as well. This gives us more flexibility. Throughout the pandemic, we’ve been able to manage supply chain issues fairly well. We reacted quickly and came up with a plan that was mutually beneficial for us and our potential clients. That allowed us to continue servicing our customers and bring their dining rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms to life.

How do you and your business partner, Forest Wieters go about removing load-bearing walls to accomplish an open floor plan?

“

We work on interior and exterior renovations and find many homeowners these days, are wanting to make a home their own with a remodel. We work with a couple of structural engineers. When we go into a job and see a blank slate of what this project could look like, we take a look at which wall would make the most sense to move. We open up the ceiling, the walls and call upon our structural engineer; he'll give us a consultation and a good plan for what needs to happen in the ceiling, floor, walls, and whatnot. We take his direction and make it happen.

A

brand new custom home on James Island for this Lowcountry family required pristine window treatments. With so many options on the market, the homeowners knew they’d need help; so they called upon the team at Advanced Window Fashions.

Solera Soft Shades coordinated with the contemporary elements of the home. A top down bottom up feature was selected. This means the bottom part of the window has privacy and the top is open for maximum natural light. With the EasyRise operating system, the homeowner can easily operate her window treatments for years to come.

“We went in for our first measurement right after construction was complete,” says Nancy McCrae, co-owner at Advanced Window Fashions. “Once products were selected and fabrics were agreed upon, we took final measurements for window treatments and drapery.”

Each project timeline varies depending on the individual products selected and the status of the home (i.e. is it under renovation, new construction, or ready to go?). Most projects, including this one, are completed within one to four months. Of course, challenges arise. Between navigating shipping, reduced staffing, and supply chain shortages, many home projects have been delayed throughout the course of the pandemic. However, Advanced Window Fashions navigates those challenges. “Ensuring that we are upfront with our clients, and keeping them up to date with any delays helps to set expectations with our clients,” Nancy says.

Hunter Douglas treatments were selected while the drapery, picked by the homeowners, were made by one of Advanced Window Fashions’ partners. Modern décor and unique features such as hidden closets and doors called for very specific window treatments: S olera Soft Shades with EasyRise fit the bill.

Color Me Happy

A colorful Isle of Palms home called for equally bold lighting. By working with her interior designer and a local lighting company, this homeowner selected fun fixtures that made a statement.

ou know the interior is going to be amazing when you enter this home and you're greeted with the "Malibu" chandelier from Ro Sham Beaux, a local lighting store whose fixtures can be seen nationwide in the finest homes and commercial spaces. "The 'Malibu' light fixture uses green recycled coke bottle glass beads and can be seen in the entry," recalls interior designer Jaime Albert of Jaime Albert Designs. Her Isle of Palms client, a friend of nearly 20 years, was not afraid of color, in fact she encouraged it. Her client wanted the interior to be bright, fun, and inviting; something she achieved with Jaime's help.

Every step of the process, Jaime helped with selecting textiles, lighting, furniture, tile, plumbing fixtures, and more. Remodeling a Forever Home

Written by Paige Taylor | Photography by Paige Taylor

The homeowners of this Mount Pleasant dwelling enlisted the help of a trusted and experienced Lowcountry contracting company to remodel their forever home.

W

plan for their kitchen area that would connect to the living room. However, there was a detached sunroom extending across the back of the house which was of concern. Working with the homeowners, Chris listened to their goals and got to work.

What started out as a kitchen and master bathroom renovation turned into a complete home makeover. “The footprint of the work encompassed the majority of the house,” Chris describes. The previous layout of the house was outdated, restrictive, and difficult to navigate through. The homeowners desired more space for better function and hosting gatherings. Specifically, they wanted an open floor

The renovations began by removing the sunroom from across the back of the house, rebuilding it as additional heated space that would provide extra square footage for a brandnew family room, a larger kitchen, and an expanded master bathroom. With the help of architect, Linda Balzac and local pros from Design on Tap, Prosource, Lowcountry Lighting Studio, and Stone Central the kitchen area was completely gutted and relocated into the new addition along with an updated pantry, flooring, cabinets, plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures, and windows. It is also completely open to the new family room, the existing living room, and the new dining

ord of mouth recommendations are still one of the quickest ways to find what you need and get what you want; which is very true for the homeowners of this Mount Pleasant dwelling, when they decided that their house no longer served as a suitable place for them and their two young daughters to thrive in. They relied upon the recommendation from their HVAC supplier, Austin Air who connected them with Chris Klick of CK Contracting.

room (replacing the old kitchen area). “The new kitchen is more modern, more stylish, and just has a much better flow that will serve them better.” Chris explains. The homeowners, who wanted to host more family events, also gained a ton of seating space with the dedicated dining area and seating at the island. For the new family room, Chris added new windows, put in new flooring, and tied in the new space with the rest of the house by mimicking the beams that were in the existing living room. Creating a house that flows from one room to the next is key. The powder bathroom previously served as more than its name describes. It also served as a pass through to the laundry room using only sliding barn doors to separate the living room, powder room, and laundry room. Chris split the powder bathroom in half, placing the updated room on one side in its own dedicated space, and then opening up the hallway that

leads from the living room to the laundry room. Chris says that the biggest hurdle his team faced during this project was timing. The homeowners lived in the house throughout most of the renovation process, which took about six months to complete. However, to make sure the family still had access to a working bathroom and kitchen, Chris and his team left the previous kitchen and master bathroom alone until after they had completely built out the new additions. CK Contracting has been serving the Lowcountry for over twenty years. Chris says “Our clients are building homes they will make lifelong memories in. It’s very cool that we get to be a part of that.” ✴ For more information call CK Contracting at (843) 352-4975 or visit ckcontractingsc.com.

These homeowners were looking for a bright and classic feel but not the typical all white kitchen. What is really exceptional about this space is the full wall backsplash around the entire room, bold and untraditional. It is a fantastic contrast against the heart pine flooring.

The four windows you see were originally three smaller windows above a kitchen sink which was swapped with the stove for functionality. The need for more natural light sparked the idea for much larger windows that overlook a full view of the water and pool deck. For structural safety purposes, these windows are waterproofed, nonoperating impact windows, ideal for their proximity to the coast line. Peering out of the window is a clear view of the pool, great for keeping an eye on swimming kiddos.

Other structural considerations were made like rehanging the porch swings with stainless steel and using blocking and framing for longevity. Cultivating Kid Spaces Designing their kids’ rooms in this Mount Pleasant home required a slightly different approach than the rest of the homes for these Lowcountry fabric experts.

A

llison and Jonathan Flanary, owners of Lowcountry fabric store Aiden Fabrics, took a different approach when designing the bedrooms for their two young children, Aiden and Sadie. “Kids are messy and hard on furniture,” Allison notes. “The space has to grow with the child as they age, and it has to be playful and uniquely reflect their personalities.”

their personalities so consider that in your design.

When it came time for Allison to design her children’s bedrooms, she took her own advice and approached the design with timelessness in mind. Another important thing to remember is kids’ style changes almost as much as

Allison’s plan of attack was to create mood boards for each space to ensure everything came together perfectly. Since both kids are young, Allison took creative control of their rooms but gave them options. Sadie chose pink for her

128 • CH+D • Spring 2022

Sadie’s room was to be girly and bright, while Aiden’s was to be cool and graphic. Their playroom was to be a fun, cheery space that felt youthful, but not childish. “That was a big theme for me,” Allison recalls. “How can I create space they love and feel at home in, while still being sophisticated and modern?”

orange; difficult things to find, but Allison found a great choice in a Leira fabric by Nate Berkus for Swavelle/ Mill Creek.

As you might imagine, designing children’s spaces is not for the faint of heart. Allison mentions her biggest challenge was finding items that would grow with her young ones, that would stand the test of time and the daily wear and tear from Aiden and Sadie. For Sadie’s room, a Villa Nova fabric in “Busy Buzzy” was the perfect choice; something sweet and girly, but also sophisticated. Aiden’s window treatments need to be graphic and

Allison also knew that the rugs for her kids’ rooms needed to be durable and cleanable; natural fabrics are the way to go. Cotton was used in Sadie’s room and wool for Aiden. In the playroom, the focus was on functionality and performance. “I picked an easy-to-clean wallpaper, drapes in a cotton twill that would be easy to clean if necessary, and a wool rug that was plush and playful,” Allison

says. “Bright colors in an unexpected palette made it warm and welcoming.” Having Aiden Fabrics’ resources at her fingertips made this project much easier for Allison. “It was much easier to work directly with one store rather than many,” she adds. “It made the process smoother with the ability to pull the wallpaper, rugs, and fabrics together to see it all in one look.” ✴

After years of working together, Wendy contacted Jordan Jenkinson at Gateway to help with fixture selections in her client’s master bathroom and kitchen, which were being redesigned to match a more modern, classic aesthetic. These two spaces required extensive renovations in order to restructure the rooms to be more functional and visually appealing. Once Wendy created a floor plan, she set up an inhouse appointment with Gateway to

There are obviously a multitude of things to consider when going through the selection process for plumbing fixtures including finish, style, dimensions, etc. Jordan notes it’s essential to ensure the fixtures selected for this client didn’t only appeal to her style, but also be functional for her client’s lifestyle. Quality and finish were top considerations for Wendy; with so many options for finishes, she

This gave the kitchen a timeless finish. “I like to mix more modern styles with classic materials,” Wendy says. “We selected the stainless steel sink for the wear and tear, and the hammered bar sink for some interest.” The bathroom features Newport Brass Pavani lever handles in polished nickel. Again, Wendy’s goal was to marry a modern profile with a classic finish. “I think the cabinetry by Spartina Kitchen and Bath, as well as countertops and tile complement the streamlined look of the fixtures,” she says. Sand and Stone This family was finally able to utilize their backyard when it was brought back to life with a functional hardscape and thoughtful design.

T

he couple of this Summerville home initially needed help minimizing water retention in their backyard. They enlisted the services of SC native, Michael Levingston, of Spartina Landscape Contractors to resolve this problem and design a more enjoyable and functional outdoor living space. Part of their reason for working with him was because of his belief in the craft of landscape design as an art form. Michael is known for his creative and consultative approach to the entire process. He emphasizes how “consistent and open dialogue with the homeowner’s ensures the best possible end result.”

134 • CH+D • Spring 2022

The homeowners had a vision for a hardscape fit for entertainment and lounging while still leaving some yard space. “We first discussed pavers to minimize runoff,” Michael says, but ultimately decided for a mixed medium using tabby concrete mixed with natural stone to help with drainage issues.” Part of outdoor comfort is to ensure proper water drainage which Michael implements into all of his designs from the very beginning. “The natural flagstone walkway is great for the Lowcountry soil, because these stones can be maintained for the lifetime of the property," Michael says.

Michael Levingston of Spartina Landscape Constructors, LLC

A custom wooden pergola was built using southern pine and installed prior to the landscape crew setting a stone border and pouring the tabby concrete for the patio. The space provides comfortable shade and is a fantastic place to gather. A string of globe lights are woven into the ceiling of the pergola for better visibility and it’s a simple way to elevate the look. “The goal was to fill the space as much as possible while leaving enough space not to dominate the rest of the yard,” says Michael. The fire pit and custom seat wall were designed to retain the greenery.

The seating has built-in low voltage lighting and is made of the same material as the rest of the hardscape. A truly coastal design, the tabby finished concrete has a natural flagstone border and inlay which features a mix of oyster shells. The fire pit is filled with natural charcoal and ceramic imitation wood for a soot free fireplace.

Approaching their fifth year in business, Spartina Landscape Contractors are eager to create the perfect outdoor experience for years to come. âś´ For more information, call Spartina Landscape Contractors, LLC at (843) 718-7383 or visit spartinalandscape.com.

“We went through an evolution of combining all of this, but in reality, it’s all the same stuff; sand, stone, cement, and water are used to create everything we see. “It all works together organically for an intentional natural looking space,” notes Michael.

Natural Flagstone

Water previously ran through these walkways which prompted the re-design, also creating a functional space for family and friends.

hen design began to pick up for a vacation home on Cassique, a modern yet family-friendly layout was important to the homeowners.

Principal Architect of Vinyet Architecture, Bill Senst worked alongside Matt Byrd of Byrd Builders for a little over a year on this modern coastal home. “One of the great luxuries of a custom-built home is the ability to tailor the design to your specific lifestyle,” says Bill. When systematic challenges present themself, Bill sees design solutions as opportunities, not problems. An example being ARB’s firm guidelines on style and design of the home’s exterior within Cassique, a neighborhood on Kiawah Island. It is important that there is a uniform curb appeal in luxury developments.

136 • CH+D • Spring 2022

“The exterior honors the English arts and crafts architecture in a coastal environment and the interior is where the industrial modern theme comes in,” Bill says. Enter through the mahogany front door into its grand foyer, you can’t help but notice the wide open view through the home, which is exactly what the homeowners were looking for. Bright white horizontal shiplap lines the walls and continues the coastal charm of Cassique. The full custom archway was designed as a means of supporting the stairs and offers a unique transition between living spaces. “The team designed this feature to encompass the aesthetic of arts and crafts architecture,” says Bill. A similar archway was built around the mahogany patio door. There is something classic about the curvature

of archways that is naturally European. Throughout the home are natural oak ceiling panels and matching floors, much like a traditional house on the coast. Because detail is everything, Bill designed a wooden accent cut out above the kitchen and another more subtle shiplap style below the stairs. Simple crown molding and trim extend over the custom archway and second mahogany door which leads to the family’s outdoor living space. Since the kitchen can be seen from all angles in the living room, Bill helped design many built-in features for the kitchen appliances. A simple and clean shaker fridge door allows it to blend right in with the cabinetry. Beside the island, a temperature controlled custom wine fridge holds the homeowner’s favorites. our eye is drawn up to the vaulted ceiling. There is an accent window above the glass panel French doors that lead to the private master balcony. Though not structural, the decorative beams on the ceiling create a classic and luxurious atmosphere for this relaxed space. The use of mixed material, like the white trim, metal features, and wood accents, provide rhythm and transition from room to room. The homeowners were sure to focus on their fixtures as a means for leading the rest of the interior design. Bold yet minimal choices in each space are a large part of achieving a modern industrial look and feel. This build is a prime example of the benefits to working with a skilled and artful architect who will combine both form and function for a cohesive design. âś´ For more information, call Vinyet Architecture at (843) 619-7662 or visit vin-yet.com. “Boutique” Your Abode There is an appeal to the well designed and organized displays seen in boutiques around Charleston. Bring the same feeling home when Tiffany Miller of Home Etiquette arranges your things in the most beautiful way.

H

er design philosophy is simple: it’s a lifestyle that highlights the things you love about your everyday. The bigger idea behind her work is an enhanced home experience for each client by tailoring beautifully functional, and most importantly, manageable home organization systems.

It’s important to mention, you won’t be asked to part with whatever items are your “thing” during the clean out process. “Taking the time to organize shouldn’t be stressful and definitely shouldn’t require you to part with anything you love,” she often reminds clients. Her goal is to help enhance your lifestyle by centering your home around what you cherish most.

When a space is thoughtfully organized, we create more space to live fully. Tiffany will arrive at your home ready to observe your current conditions, evaluate the obstacles, discuss strategies, and implement solutions to your everyday problems.

There are two methods when it comes to decluttering with Home Etiquette. Much like Dave Ramsey’s get out of debt plan, Tiffany recommends choosing either the Avalanche or Snowball method to organize.

(opposite above) Glass shelves display various glassware and ceramics for stylish storage. (top left) Categorizing by size and color is one way to make a home feel like an upscale boutique. (top right) Acrylic containers are easy to stack and keep clean.

The Avalanche method requires pulling everything out of every corner and do it all at once. A mass sweep of an entire home, one big trip to the donation center, and solutions created from the ground up. Now, this is certainly an overwhelming concept for someone who has been in a home for many years. The avalanche method lends itself to smaller spaces. A more approachable end result can be achieved when one opts to snowball their organizational design. Start small with one room. Tear it apart. Put it back together. Move on to the next. It can also be rather encouraging to have one space come together before the others. There is more to organization than meets the eye, literally. After the final visit, whether neatly tucked away in a drawer, basket, or decorative box, everything you

love and use most often will be easy to access and put back right where it goes. Simple systems like these are easy to keep up with even after your home organization appointment. Tiffany tells us how “acrylic containers are an excellent way to organize the little things in an extremely satisfying way.” Her solutions are easy to maintain because everything has its place. Imagine your home, but “boutique'd.” You deserve to feel joy even when you open a drawer” Tiffany says. They say that the state of your home is a reflection of the state of your mind. Team up with Tiffany to clear your conscience and create a space for more life. ✴ For more information, call Home Etiquette at (843) 818-3232 or visit homeetiquette.com.

Creighton’s taste is a bit more “out there,” seen in a piece above their dresser in their bedroom, however they marry their styles and find pieces they both enjoy. Big dreams will come to fruition in the coming years as Erin and Creighton continue working on their backyard. Their stock tank pool is commonly used and is hooked up to be transformed into a hot tub. Eventually, they will add to this area and revitalize it to make it even more functional for them.

Raising Creatives With parents who are both super creative, it's doubtful Sunny and Bowie are lacking in that area. However, they would be ecstatic if the kids shared in their passions. An example she notes is that Sunny is currently in ballet. Erin really wants her to love it, but she’s not so sure it’s totally her thing. “I feel like our job as parents is to expose them to tons of different things.
