Our Bathroom Product Guide might make you want to immediately start shopping for new fixtures, tile, and accessories, but our Afghan Rug Feature will also make you want to fill your abode with beautiful hand-woven Afghan rugs. Rob Leahy, of Fine Rugs of Charleston, chats with our team about his new Kabul Carpet Exports Center program to promote Afghanistan’s long-lasting history of weaving exquisite rugs and carpets. And, since it’s spring, our cover feature showcases the refreshing home of illustrious children’s clothing designer and founder of Little Adi + Co., Adrianne Betz. Savvy Design Duo Amandra Kelly and Margaret Lee Moniz of Indigo Alley Interiors, sit down with Charleston Home + Design magazine to talk inspiration and their design process. What led to the two of you partnering up and founding Indigo Alley Interiors? We both came from families with backgrounds in design and construction. We met as students at The Art Institute of Charleston and quickly bonded over our mutual love of dogs, design, and grilled cheese. We always talked about starting our own business but we still had a lot to learn. After years of working with different designers, we knew it was time to create Indigo Alley Interiors.
Where does the inspiration behind your designs come from? Our designs are first and foremost inspired by our clients and how they are going to use their space. We strongly believe a space should reflect the people living and working there; we also take cues from the space itself. We enjoy incorporating updated pieces with a nod to the past, especially in older spaces.

We use our combined experience and education to create unique and beautiful solutions for their space.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received about working in interior design?
How does your design process work?
Design is all about flexibility. You can’t be too attached to any one idea. Very often something comes up that causes you to have to rethink your original design so you have to learn to adapt.

He Said: Paul Said: Using bold pops of color in sofas, sectionals, pillows, and throws is one way to accent an otherwise neutral room, allowing for a juxtaposition of design. If you like minimal color, a sideboard or cabinet is a great way to add punch to the room.
Paul Said: I really appreciate the uniqueness that an eclectic design scheme offers in a home. It allows you to introduce more than one personality in a room.
Paul Said: The living room is my favorite when it comes to decorating. The living room is the focal point in a home where friends and family gather to spend time together.
She Said: Neutrals or Bright Colors?

Stacy Said: I love the timeless look and serene feeling a neutral color scheme offers. Growing up, I inherited a passion for earthy tones and finding inspiration in the colors and textures in nature and I love using that in décor.
Stacy Said: I usually opt for a more eclectic design. It’s fun to pair different styles, textures, and lines. This really brings a room together and makes it stand out.
Stacy Said: I’m a tie between the living room and bedroom. Having lived in several studio apartments as a young adult, I’ve learned to create the ultimate comfortable space between a living and a sleep area.

At Home With
Chris Harper of Harper Construction Chris is surrounded by beautiful homes in his everyday life and gets inspiration regularly for his own home. By integrating designs he’s seen in his work into his own home, Chris has cultivated a space that’s both coastal and modern, as well as perfect for his own lifestyle. 1 Over the past nine years in his home, Chris has made updates and remodeled spaces to make them more functional for him. For his kitchen, Chris refaced the cabinets and installed a glass backsplash and white quartz countertops. Chris brought in his friend Shannon Bogan, of S. Bogan Designs, to help with design and furniture selection. They also created a custom floor color that they call “Harper Gray” by staining white oak with a gray color.
2 The entryway features a stunning floor-
to-ceiling built-in bookcase that was crafted in the home by Chris’s carpenters. The bookcase is the perfect backdrop for a vintage desk for Chris to use when he needs to brainstorm. Filled with trinkets from a variety of places and times in Chris’ life, the bookcase is unique and special to the home.
3 With some extra square footage off the kitchen, Chris created a sitting area for guests to enjoy while they’re waiting for their meal. The blue hues are continued throughout the home and pair with Chris’s artwork from his friend and local artist, John Duckworth. Together, Chris and Shannon selected the chairs and table to add to Chris’s Charleston beach cottage vibe.
with hues of grays and whites, Chris came to the conclusion that it was time to fill his own abode with some color. Partnering with Shannon Bogan again, Chris found a deep blue sectional sofa to anchor the room. Fun pops of orange were added in pillows and the cabinets were painted a deep greenish blue to complement the sofa. The Carolina Machine Finishing Process Moisture infiltration is one of the leading causes of exterior siding and trim failure, given the high humidity that is constant along Coastal South Carolina. Airborne moisture enters the unprimed backside and end cuts of all wood products, causing them to cup and warp, and the paint to blister and peel resulting in premature substrate failure. The CMF process ensures that all sides are sealed against moisture infiltration
with an even application of all coatings in a factory controlled environment. The coatings are mechanically brushed deep into the material’s surfaces and to further stabilize the product and prevent future substrate failure from the harsh elements. This process is especially advantageous for builders as the product arrives on-site, prepped and ready for installation with the proper protection from the elements.

When building or remodeling a home, many homeowners today opt for eco-friendly products to sustain their space from the ground up. One of the most important factors in the design process is flooring, as a unique hardwood design can tie together any space to fit a homeowner’s specific vision. One concern that many designers face in installing hardwood is whether or not a material is detrimental to the environment. Using pine wood from local farms that source their lumber directly is a great sustainable alternative to large-scale manufacturing. Preserve and Protect with Fiber Cement Siding

Protecting the exterior of your home is just as important as decorating the interior. It is difficult to find the perfect exterior that is able to withstand wild winds, dreadful downpours, and still look fresh. The best exterior for your home has to be versatile and durable. Cultivating Challenges
Landscaping projects include many important steps, no matter how big or how small they are. Perfecting each major and minor detail requires a keen eye and a wide range of knowledge. Don’t worry, having basic knowledge of each step can help you achieve the landscape goals you have in mind so that you can enjoy every second of Charleston’s outdoor living.
Grading:
Terracing:
This process is used to move earth to adjust the slope of the land to allow for proper drainage and functionality.
Land with a significant slope may benefit from and become more usable with terracing, which is the process of creating multiple levels in a stair-like fashion that often includes the use of retaining walls to control erosion and soil movement.
Underplanting: Underplanting is the practice of planting smaller plants and flowers close to the base of larger plants in an effort to fill out your space and add more color to your landscaping design without using up more space in your yard.
Rain Garden: Also sometimes called stormwater gardens, this method uses soil absorption to create a filter system. Rain gardens are designed to temporarily hold rainwater and prevent rain runoff .
Xeriscaping: Xeriscaping groups plants together that have similar water needs. This process conserves water and eliminates the need for additional watering. It is mainly used for areas that are susceptible to drought. 78 • CH+D • Spring 2019
Dry Well: A dry well is an underground system used to collect excess water by creating a large divot in the ground. Sometimes the excess water will soak back into the ground or can be drained with a pipe or outlet, depending on how the dry well is constructed.
Cistern: An eco-friendly structure that collects and conserves rainwater, the cistern is typically located above ground. This design has waterproof lining that helps hold water in for a long period of time. Having a cistern can conserve water while also saving the homeowner money.

Taking a Look at the Cost of
Professional Tree Care Charleston is often characterized by its sprawling marshes and varied tree species that surround it. But what does it take to care for them and why should homeowners invest in that maintenance? The pros at Bartlett Tree Experts can explain these reasons with science and years of experience.
Analysis and Inspections
Usually by the time a tree presents outward signs of distress or decay, the actual underlying problems have progressed beyond repair or recovery. Working with a professional arborist means discovering and preventing issues, like insect and disease damage, before they cause serious issues. During an inspection the arborist checks the tree health by looking for signs of damage, soil saturation, or structural weakness. From those findings, the arborist makes a care plan for soil treatment, pruning, and insect prevention.
Health & Safety
On average, one tree generates 260 pounds of oxygen per year, which is just one reason why homeowners should regularly care for their trees. If you have large trees on your property, consider installing lighting rods, which deflect a lighting strike through metal rods installed from the top of the tree down the trunk and into the ground away from the root system. If your yard features a Live Oak, be sure to talk to an expert about adding braces for the heavy branches, which will prevent major limb loss that 80 • CH+D • Spring 2019
can cause trauma to the whole tree. Cabling is another option applied to the upper crown of the tree with high-strength cables to prevent too much movement in the event of a major storm. Keep in mind that all supplemental structural support systems should only be installed based on a thorough inspection and evaluation of the tree’s structural health by certified arborists.
Pruning & Tree Recovery
Pruning is required on all mature trees to remove dead and dying branches. The removal of live branches to reduce density significantly reduces wind resistance and storm damage. “Raising,” or reducing the limbs in the crown of the tree can help compensate for structural weaknesses. Pruning and raising trees can also prevent damage in the event of a major storm. By working with an arborist you can establish a prestorm strategy to identify potential problems and reduce the risk of failure in your tree’s trunk or root system. Clay Gabriel starts his morning by checking his schedule for the day. Since Lowcountry Basement Systems offers multiple services to homeowners for the repair and protection of the crawl spaces of their homes, he needs to be sure that he is set for the day with the right tools.
Lowcountry Basement Systems offers free inspections to homeowners, which involves more than just checking or encapsulating a crawlspace, so Clay meets with the first homeowner of the day to explain a plan of action to fix their cupping floors and prevent the problem from happening again.
The installation of a “CompleteCleanSpace Encapsulation System” at another home is proceeding according to schedule. The patented system is a solution that Lowcountry Basement Systems uses to encapsulate a house’s crawlspace with a moisture barrier to prevent humidity from rising into the crawl space and therefore it removes moisture and humidity.
Clay meets with a new homeowner and explains the benefits of encapsulation to them including the transferable warranty and advises them to schedule a regular maintenance plan. The new homeowners wish continue because of the benefits that their encapsulated crawlspace brings to the rest of their home. For example, keeping humidity from seeping from the ground into their home helps their HVAC run less and therefore extends the life of the HVAC system.

Another homeowner has called Lowcountry Basement Systems to bring them out for a free inspection, due to a concerning report from their termite inspection technician. Clay inspects the exterior, the crawlspace, and the interior of the house, looking for “soft spots” in places like the flooring and foundation supports that might be damaged and therefore extra susceptible to further moisture damage.
When inspecting homes, Clay measures everything, from the distance from the floor to ceiling. He also photographs everything and checks the moisture in the air with a hydrometer which is a tool that measure air currents and watch for areas on the ground where water is pooling. All of this helps him and his design team create the best and longest-lasting solution for the homeowners by putting the dehumidifiers in the perfect places.
Clay sits down with new clients to explain why a crawl space encapsulation is right for their house. Since the family has been suffering from allergies and repeated trips to the doctor as a result, Clay is happy to tell them that a crawl space encapsulation system will prevent mold growth, because the sole purpose of the system is to block moisture from accumulating under their home, which has been prime real estate for mold and has been causing their health problems.
All of his appointments completed, Clay puts together all of the information and research he’s gathered from each home. Filing papers and designing the right system for each home takes time and, since each home and therefore its needs are different, he documents each visit and his findings meticulously.

“We’ll come out and look at everything and we track all the animals that like your house. That information will give us species, male or female, and more. We use that information to critter-proof the house. If there’s a hole that’s over half an inch, a rat can fit through it. We go over the entire home and close everything from ground vents, eaves, and soffits. We close up the holes by using a galvanized steel screen, called hardware cloth, with quarter inch holes in it. Christopher got his start in the construction industry the old-fashioned way by working in the field at a young age and spending his summers “earning and learning” everything there is to know about constructing a home. CK Contracting began in 2002 after his mentor and friend Garth Snide encouraged Christopher to begin his own business.
What are the distinctive features of this home that illustrate your custom work? This project was a remodel, so we opened up the floor plan to create a more modern interior. There was a huge two-story fireplace in the living room that had a stone and wood facade. We removed that, enclosed the screened porch to create a sunroom, and connected the living room and sunroom spaces. The homeowner and I both agree that the sunroom that leads into the living room is our favorite space. We replaced and redesigned the kitchen and replaced all of the flooring, siding, windows, and doors.
What challenges did you overcome with this project? The homeowner’s biggest request and our biggest challenge was the timeline. They needed to move in by a certain point, but, as with all remodeling projects, we were faced with a few significant delays. One of the biggest was Hurricane Florence, which threatened Charleston and caused several weeks’ worth of delays. But our goal was to finish the house on time, so we worked hard to make that happen.
What makes working with CK Contracting a seamless experience for homeowners? Currently we’re working with a cloud-based software that helps us stay in constant contact with our clients and other vendors. This new method has vastly improved the time in which we are able to communicate throughout the whole process. Michael has been practicing residential and commercial design for over 35 years. He found his passion in service and in helping bring his clients’ dream homes to life by creating a home that fits them, their lifestyle, and their personal tastes.
What are some of the unique features of this dwelling? As with all our homes, the design is a one-of-a-kind solution tailored specifically to the site and our client’s preferences. It houses an elevator serving all three levels, a full metal roof, some live edge walnut accents, and walnut flooring, as well as two stone fireplaces.
What challenges arose during the design process of this home and how did you overcome them? This Kiawah Island neighborhood requires keeping the massing down with a minimal amount of second floor walls exposed to the exterior. This can be a challenge and the buildable area of the site was also tight so a single floor design wouldn’t fit. The solution required careful placement and organizations of second floor rooms that were in a position to maintain low enough window sill heights to meet egress codes.
What were the homeowners goals for their home? They were interested in having a more modest sized home to function initially as a vacation spot but also to morph into a more permanent home in later years. That required an efficient use of square footage that included all of the amenities necessary for a permanent home.
Why was it crucial for the homeowners to work with an architect on this project? Kiawah Island requires licensed architects for all homes on the island in order to maintain a high design standard. He has used the contacts he’s built over the years to assist in bringing in national and international clients and his one-of-a-kind designs often grace the pages of home publications across the Southeast.
What were some of the homeowner’s design goals? Their prior interior was quite different in style from the new home. They both like the mix of country English and French with a clean, traditional aesthetic for their oceanfront home. The couple desired a serene atmosphere that contained very little color, but created interest through textures and play of light.
What challenges arose during this process and how did you work with the homeowner to overcome them? While there are always challenges with a design project, these homeowners were a joy to work with. They were very consistent in their design choices and they provided clear direction, which led to a very smooth (and fun) project. Completely changing their interior was a great process because we had such a clean palette to work with.
What advice do you have for homeowners who are looking to work with an interior designer? Be very frank with the designer and make sure they understand who you are and how you live. There should be a lot of questions asked about how you entertain, where you eat your meals, how you spend your free time, and more. A designer needs to get to know you in order to help you create a home that feels like you, and functions smoothly. Interior Excellence As new, full-time transplants to South Carolina, a couple from New Jersey knew it was vital to make the most of their Seabrook Island home by working with a professional interior designer to create the most beautifully-functional spaces for their lifestyle. t is clear from the moment the front door opens that George and Mary Fleck have a masterfully designed home that incorporates their backyard golf course views with the functionality of a place that feels like home for Mary and George and their guests alike. “We had an idea of what we wanted, but really all of the credit goes to Randolph at Southeastern Galleries,” says George with a wide, reminiscent grin. Randolph Cooper, one of Southeastern Galleries’ professional interior designers, partnered with the couple, not just to create a beautiful interior, but one that provides the functionality that was important to both of them, since they have guests and extended family who regularly visit. “I met George and Mary
when they came into the Southeastern Galleries store. They were perusing the furniture and decor we have displayed there, and then we got to talking about their new home,” explains Randolph. Mary and George had just purchased their home when they met Randolph, and from there, the three of them planned what each space would be used for and how the design would best fit into their lifestyle. “The color story for the home was incredibly important,” expounds Randolph. “The house is on a resort island, so we really wanted to bring in the colors that you see in the surrounding water and marshes. That means, soft green and blue hues, which we anchored with warmer camel and taupe tones.”

Each room throughout the home includes an “homage” (as Randolph likes to call them) to one detail or another from the previous space. When walking from the living room to the dining room to the “Map Room,” the elements all give a nod to Charleston in one way or another. In a nod to Charleston’s classic history, Randolph and the homeowners designed a dining room with Chinese Chippendale lattice chairs and modified wingback host and hostess chairs in custom fabrics. The “Map Room” is a favorite for Mary, George, Randolph and visitors. “This room is probably the greatest reflection of Mary and George’s personalities,” adds Randolph. “Over a lifetime they have collected antique maps from the places they’ve visited, so we found a way to display them that meshed well with the rest of the home.” Randolph also loves to point out the “Map Room” 108 • CH+D • Spring 2019
ceiling, where a Visual Comfort semiflush light fixture shines elegantly for all to admire. “George was very unsure of it at first, but once Randolph hung it for us and we saw how the gold brightens the darker wood tones of the furniture and accents the trim gold found in some of the map frames, he was sold,” says Mary, which pulls smiles from both Randolph and George. Overall, the design and style of the home speaks for itself, as well as the talent and eye for detail behind the design. The underlying aspect that has created such success is the on-going friendship between George, Mary and Randolph that has resulted from the attentive service the couple received during the process. Countertop Couture A certain Daniel Island couple worked with SHELTER Custom-Built Living and countertop supplier AGM Imports to design a stunning, yet functional home for their specific needs.

very custom home is unique because every homeowner’s needs are different, especially when it comes to their personal taste and the usefulness of each feature for that homeowner’s lifestyle. One Daniel Island couple knew the importance of choosing a builder and a countertop supplier who could create the perfect 110 • CH+D • Spring 2019
balance of both aspects for their home. Ryan and Jenny Butler, along with their team at SHELTER Custom-Built Living partnered with the homeowners to design and build their custom abode. SHELTER’s in-house designers and the homeowners, knew early on that their design required the perfect
countertops to complete the surfaces and create a beautiful, cohesive style throughout the house. Once that process had begun, the team reached out to AGM Imports to supply the natural stone countertops for each space. AGM Imports, a natural and manufactured stone supplier, invited the home-

owners and Hollis Erickson to personally select their slabs for each room from their vast warehouse in North Charleston. “It was important to the homeowners to be able to see and touch the materials that they would be selecting for differnt rooms,” explains Emily Griffin of AGM Imports. “That’s a big part of why we like to work so closely with the builders, designers, and homeowners. We’re here to help educate the homeowners about the materials they’re
choosing to install in their homes.” Because the homeowners opted to hand-select their countertops, they knew from the start the different characteristics of each natural stone that they chose, how those stones will wear over time, and the exact steps to maintain their surfaces. For the kitchen, they determined a quartzite countertop was the perfect fit for their needs, since quartzite and granite are sim-
ilar in durability and low-maintenance, yet slightly different in style. A man-made quartz was selected for the butler’s pantry for its marble-like appearance. Marble countertops were installed in the master and guest bathrooms, as well as the laundry room. A polished quartzite adds a chic and stylish element to this home’s kitchen, while a leathered granite countertop finish brings a more casual quality to the homeowner’s office and outdoor spaces. According to Emily, the best advice that she can share with homeowners who are selecting natural or man-made materials for their countertops, is to learn from the professionals what it takes to maintain each material. Redesigning an Original When it came time to remodel and redesign the interior of their home, Bob and Pat Johnston collaborated with Delpino Custom Homes and Stallings Studio for a total overhaul.
A
Since Bob works very closely with most of the business owners on Daniel Island, he already knew Nathan Delpino and knew he wanted to work closely with Nathan’s team at Delpino Custom Homes to remodel their Daniel Island home. “I learned when we started the project that their house is one of the first, if not the first, David Weekley Home that was built in Charleston, which just makes this project that much more interesting than it already was,” explains Nathan. The team pooled their vast remodeling
knowledge, and, together with interior designer Emily Stallings of Stallings Studio, reimagined the interior. First they started by replacing the flooring, then they added walls to formalize the room to the right of the front door to create an office, adjusted the kitchen by replacing the cabinetry and adding a wider island with seating, and redid the master bathroom. From there, Nathan and Bob chose to enclose the back porch for the perfect “outdoor” space that can be enjoyed year-round.

common question among homeowners is often whether they should move or stay in their current home, whether they should remodel a home or build one from scratch. For Bob and Pat Johnston, that question had an easy answer. “We moved to this side of Daniel Island in the late 90’s and have loved every minute that we’ve spent here,” says Bob. There was nothing they could think of that made them want to leave their little slice of paradise.

Emily began her magic once the remodeling of the structure was established. “I partnered with Bob and Pat to incorporate some of the furniture they already had into an interior plan that worked with the new space. They had a great vision and we worked together to make everything functional,” she explains.
Much like remodeling a home, sometimes working with existing pieces of furniture and other items to create a whole new picture can be a bit more challenging than starting from scratch. While keeping the sofa and a few major pieces in the master suite, she styled around the dark wood and leather tones to lighten the space with accents of white and light blues for a pop of coastal panache. “We knew we needed to update the interior of the home once we began remodeling,” adds Bob. “And Emily did a fantastic job of listening to what we wanted and bringing that vision to life.” Even though each homeowner’s needs and, therefore, each project is different, Emily and Nathan were able to work together to help Bob and Pat rebuild their dream home, because their end goal is the same: find the balance between beauty and function that fits with the homeowner’s lifestyle. ✴

home to match the style of the closet to the design of the home,” Robert says. Jennifer had ideas for what she wanted when she approached Robert so they had a collaborative process. “We worked together closely, and Robert used a 3D drawing program to do perspective print outs so that I knew exactly what it was going to look like,” Jennifer adds. “We also did a walkthrough which helped Robert be able to make helpful suggestions about outlet locations, doors, and vents.”
During each walkthrough, Robert asks clients questions so that he can best determine what type of closet they need for their space. He wants to know what frustrations they have with the current closet, what their goals are for the new space, and what the budget is. This way he can help figure out the solutions to their problems and how to solve those issues within budget. “I put a lot of thought into this house in terms of making it functional. Robert helped me decide what things
to get rid of, but he also helped me realize that I didn’t have to get rid of everything,” Jennifer mentions. uilding their custom home was all about collaboration for the Walden family. After partnering with Bill Huey & Associates for the architectural design, they brought in Lane Baker of Saltwater Homes and the team at Southern Lumber & Millwork to provide the building materials as well as the trim, window, and door design selections.

Once everyone met and brainstormed it was time to set the plan into motion. As a building materials supplier and custom trim work manufacturer, the Southern Lumber process often begins with estimating. When Brad Watkins, of the Outside Sales department at Southern Lumber, got the plans for this beautiful waterfront home, he figured out
pricing and let the Waldens know what the project was going to cost. “We look at each of the elements in a house and how much it’ll roughly cost,” Brad says. “It’s really helpful for us to work with Bill Huey as the architect because he has the details for what’s going where.” After the initial estimation is complete, Brad meets with the homeowner

and goes over each separate package that’s involved in finishing the home. “It’s important to sit with the homeowners to discuss each aspect of the project, whether that’s trim, siding, or framing,” Lane Baker, Owner of Saltwater Homes, explains. “Then they go through all of the interiors with Brad and he inspects the doors and trims and determines what materials to use.” Homeowners can go directly to the Southern Lumber & Millwork show-
room to pick out their siding, doors, windows, trim, and more. They offer a variety of choices for different styles. “Typically, homeowners come into the showroom, look at the variety of windows and doors we have to offer and choose from there,” says Jennifer Blackwelder from the Window and Door department at Southern Lumber & Millwork. “In this case, Susanna and Rob Walden worked with Bill to come up with a plan and make their selections.
From there we were able to bring those selections to the site to finish the house.” Brad and the rest of the Southern Lumber & Millwork team worked closely with the architect and builder to ensure that it was chock full of fun details to make the house safe, functional, and stylish. the Waldens were getting the right products for their home. “We used impact windows in this home as well as in most other homes that we work on,” explains Jennifer. “We see these a lot more often because of living in the Lowcountry. If you’re much further inland and it’s a budget sensitive project, we might not use the impact windows, but it was the right choice for this home. The biggest challenge in this home was the dome bellcast roof which is made of metal. “We have a CNC machine that can
make patterns for the framer to basically build it offsite and then they come to the site to put it together; it’s like a lego puzzle,” says Brad. “There were so many curves and angles, in the design, but we wanted a metal roof which is harder to bend than the copper,” adds homeowner Susanna. “It’s held up, too; we’ve been through two hurricanes and we haven’t had any issues.” This home also features an Elite Treated exterior, radius windows, cable rail on the back deck, and fiberglass columns. Delightful Details Homeowner Karen Hunt knew just who to call when she, and her husband, Mike Lewine, purchased a new home in Charleston and decided to renovate the pool that was already in the backyard.
C
harleston can be a tricky place to build a pool for several reasons. Firstly, we live on a fault line. Secondly, most locations in Charleston are extremely close to sea level. Thirdly, the soil conditions here are not always conducive to the minimal requirements

for pool maintenance. But, armed with that knowledge, homeowners and their pool builders can plan accordingly and design the perfect pool for their needs. Karen Hunt, and her husband Mike Lewine, have already gone through the pool building process once with Mi-
chael Gesmond, owner of Heritage Pools, and knew he and his team would go above and beyond once again for her new house on Isle of Palms. “I’d spoken with several pool builders in the area when we built our first pool with Heritage Pools. I could tell from the start with Michael’s

initial drawings that they would be the best fit for my experience,” describes Karen. “Michael took care of everything, which really put me at ease, since I was living in California at the time and we were building a pool on the East Coast.” Karen is also busy running her own business, Carolina Elegance, so she appreciated that Mike could take over designing and building their pool.
Because Heritage Pools is a full-service pool builder, they came to the property, assessed the old fiberglass pool, and returned to Karen with several options. “We suggested removal of the fiberglass pool (rather than a renovation) and then to replace it with a custom concrete design,” mentions Michael. The design included a “sport bottom” which means that both ends are shallow, while the mid-
dle provides a deeper section, which is ideal for activities like volleyball. For this particular pool, Karen expressed her wish for plantings around the pool and features like a custom spillover spa with plenty of jets, eye-catching tile designs, as well as the ability to control the features of the pool from her smart device. “I just told Michael what I wanted and he designed the whole CH+D • Spring 2019 • 125

Michael also installed pervious pavers, since the pool is so close to the marsh and required particular drainage options. “He paid attention to every little detail, and I just love that,” adds Karen. Stand-Out Iron Feature Knocking down their existing staircase led these Mt. Pleasant homeowners to the decision to add a custom spiral staircase to their home.
W
hen building or renovating a home, many people consider what customized finishes they can add to make their dwelling stand out. One special way they can do so is by incorporating custom iron work in their home much like a certain Mt. Pleasant couple did. These homeowners were inspired by a photo they found online and enlisted the help of Will Smith, owner of Lowcountry Iron, and his team to customize their staircase. For years, Will has been working on a variety of iron, steel, aluminum, and stainless projects. “We can do anything from doors, gates, and handrails, to art pieces, shelves, and other interior pieces,” Will says.
The process for this particular project was fun for Will to work on because of the spiral design. The challenge came in bending the pipes to create the curvature. Working with pipes can be tricky, but luckily, Will has a special machine to help him create the perfect look for the homeowners. “We have a roller machine that’s a pyramid. It has two rollers; one top one that pushes down and another one that you run down the pipe,” Will explains. “As the roller is pushing the pipe through, there is downward pressure applied that curves
the iron.” Another challenge that the Lowcountry Iron team had to overcome was the spacing between where the staircase would be and the wall. “There was a moment when I thought it might not fit because we weren’t able to measure anything diameter wise because the stairs were so close to the wall,” mentions Will. “But we made it work through the years of practice and experience that helps us understand spaces and the materials we work with.” In order to install the staircase once the rail was curved properly and started shaping up, Will carried the product into the house by hand since they couldn’t use a crane. This project began when the homeowners were working on replacing some flooring in their house. They realized when they demolished their
existing staircase that they wanted something more unique and the floor installer recommended Lowcountry Iron. “After our flooring guy recommended Will, we gave him a call and showed him our idea for the spiral staircase,” says the homeowner. “Will was able to replicate the image we had exactly to our specifications and it was a really great addition to the space.”

Historic Downtown Updates This South Battery home got a special, protective coating for its outdoor living areas.
W
hen this house on the battery was first built, there was a long dock out back that a farm on Johns Island used to import milk. This home was the milk supplier for a majority of the peninsula at the time. Fast forward to today where unfortunately the dock no longer stands, but the history still shows. Acryfin Coatings South East, met this downtown homeowner at the Charleston Home + Design Show in January and began working with her. He learned of the home’s history and was able to maintain the historic feel with a fresh coating throughout the exterior. “We coat docks and decks with a special seal. At this home we did the front porch, side stairs, and the back
porch,” Bo mentions. “A special coating is applied that preserves the wood, makes it last longer, makes it less slippery, and locks the splinters down.” The timeline that it takes to finish a project is heavily dependent on the weather and time of year that Acryfin is painting the coating. “If we have good sunlight and weather, we can easily be in and out within a day. Stunning Surfaces While remodeling her abode, homeowner Maureen McGinty worked with designer Andy Bennington and Greg Hoffman of Universal Marble & Granite to create the perfect domicile.

othing is quite as wonderful as seeing a house come together, and as a family that has moved over twenty times in nearly forty years, creating a space that feels like home was paramount to Mt. Pleasant homeowner Maureen McGinty. She embarked

Durable Garage Doors Splitting his time between Charleston and Virginia meant that Mike Thomas’s Isle of Palms home required a long-lasting, dependable garage door to help protect it while he is away.

A
s a primarily practical person, the fashion world has always intrigued me. Styling a pretty blouse with the perfect pants, shoes, and jewelry has been a fun pastime time since I was young. On the other hand, the fashion industry is also a confusing aspect of society to me.
Watching movies like The Devil Wears Prada is entertaining, but only seems to scratch the surface of how this subculture operates. Fortunately, there are people like Adrianne Betz in the world, who love fashion and are innovative enough to create their own, regardless of their orientation to New York City or Paris. She realized that it didn’t matter whether she stayed in New York where her career was flourishing, or if she lived in Charleston, as long as she was creating a great product that was special and that people loved to wear. When I met with Adrianne, it was a breath of fresh air to find her home filled with children’s toys and comfortable furniture and for her to open the door in casual shorts and a comfortable shirt. I knew from that moment she was my kind of fashion designer—even if most of the clothes she designs don’t come in my size.

A Happy Place Let’s start at the beginning with your hometown, Adrianne. Where are you from and what it was like growing up there?

When I was around twelve, I just felt like I was meant for more, though, and had my sights set on the big city. What’s funny about that is I had never actually been to New York City. Even though it wasn’t that far away from where I was raised, I didn’t actually visit NYC for the first time until I was in high school, when I went on a field trip with my art class. My second time visiting the city was when I went with my mom to tour colleges. Once I was accepted to F.I.T. (the Fashion Institute of Technology), I never turned back. I had moved to the city initially for college and then ended up working and living there for just about ten years. Truly, I never saw myself leaving the city—that was where I thrived. How did you know you wanted to go to the Fashion Institute? Were you always a creative person? Definitely. I was always drawing as a kid or redecorating my bedroom. It wasn’t until I went to school that I learned to sew, though. My mom wasn’t a seamstress by any means and I was never really exposed to sewing, but I knew if I was going to get into a reputable college, I would need to know how to sew. Fashion has never been just about sketching the designs - you’ve got to actually know how to construct them too, so I 140 • CH+D • Spring 2019
was actually a problem because as I would sew, pins would drop into the area rug and disappear, so my college floor was literally covered in pins and needles. [laughs] During and after college you worked for a couple of well-known fashion companies. What led you to those jobs? It sounds weird to say now, especially in hindsight, but I always knew what I wanted to do. To me, it feels like blind luck that everything has worked out, since a lot of people who pursue fash-
I had a few internships between freshman and sophomore year, but in the summer of my senior year is when I had gotten this really amazing internship at New York & Company. They loved me so much that they said they would hire me on as an assistant designer. They were great, because they were willing to work with my school schedule, and since I was already basically doing that job as an intern, the transition was seamless. So they hired me as an assistant designer that summer before my senior year, and I kept the position through my last two semesters, carrying my full course load of credits and everything. I even completed my thesis while also going to school and working. While I was at New York & Company I worked on designing women’s denim.
I stayed at New York & Company for about six years and rapidly progressed in my career there. While I was taking a break in between jobs, one of my previous bosses called to say she had the perfect position for me designing infant’s demin at Baby Gap. I definitely had the right experience, so I felt like it was the perfect fit and was excited to be able to merge my two passions. What initially gave you the idea to start Little Adi + Co. and how did you get it off the ground?

I was busy working at Baby Gap, when my husband was offered an opportunity of a lifetime to move to Charleston, where we ended up having our first son, Aden. It was then that I really focused on what clothes were on the market for kids in a different way. And I thought, ‘I want my son to be able to wear quality clothing that is really cute, but also a little more fashionable and exclusive.’ Then I went searching for clothing like that and came across only a few people that were making it. I started having thoughts about certain things I would change to make it perfect for Aden and realized, if they’re doing it, I could too, and I could do it better. It also helped that we had been living in Charleston at that point, and I didn’t have a job and needed something to do. Like I mentioned before, I’m a very driven person, so I don’t usually sit still for long before I’ve got a new project to work on or something new to create for the business. 142 • CH+D • Spring 2019
Most people are surprised when they hear that I started Little Adi + Co without investors or anything like that. I used a few hundred dollars of my own money to get it started. James was totally supportive when I approached him about my idea. He said, ‘If this is something you want to do, do it,’ which was great.
months into Little Adi + Co. being an ‘official’ business, it blew up! It grew so fast, it was difficult to keep up with all of the orders. That was right around the time that Instagram started to become more popular, too, so I just saw the opportunity practically present itself to me. Thankfully, it has really paid off.
From there I started making the clothes and putting them on Etsy. That lasted for a few short weeks before demand kept growing and I moved the clothing to another ecommerce site with our own domain. It was the best decision, hands down, for our brand.
My contacts from my time in New York were also a huge part of how I grew the company. To this day, I still keep in touch with people who I’ve worked with in all aspects of my career. I work hard to network with people and partner with them for success. That’s a big thing that I’m all about when it comes to Little Adi + Co. today. It’s the networking, the partnering and collaborating with other businesses. I’m a huge advocate of working and growing together. Leveraging brand relationships is critical for growth. I’m a firm believer in bringing people up with you because that’s how Little Adi + Co. was able to get off the ground. I relied on
How did you use the experiences and skills you learned in your previous jobs to grow Little Adi + Co? Within the first four months or so of pursuing this endeavor, my husband said to me, ‘This needs to be a legitimate business. We need to file.’ And about seven
people to help bring me up, and once I got there, I turned around and started doing the same thing for others. The networking aspect of my experience was a huge thing too, because if I didn’t have that Rolodex (so to speak) of contacts, I wouldn’t have a manufacturer now to create the clothing that we’re selling. Another thing I learned in my career was how to source materials and maintain a profitable margin between what I was paying for supplies and the amount at which I was selling the finished product. When I first started making children’s clothing on my own, I really didn’t have Little Adi + Co. on my radar, especially the way it exists now. I just wanted to take my chance at making clothing that
I wanted my own son to wear. I knew this was the perfect platform for me to really continue being a designer and stay in the fashion industry, which is what I love doing. I love putting my best out there for other people to enjoy. I love the challenge that comes with trying to outdo myself with each collection. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate all the time! How do you balance being a full-time mother of three young boys and a full-time business owner? It was really hard at first. A few months into this whole thing, I think it was March at the time, the orders were out of control and I was still making each piece by hand. By myself. I was just sewing, sewing, sewing all the time, and I was losing time with
my baby. James would take Aden out on the weekends to the aquarium or park while I was stuck in the house sewing clothes because there were orders that absolutely had to go out. I remember sitting there at my sewing machine crying, asking myself what I was doing. He’s my first baby and I wanted him more than anything, so I constantly asked myself, ‘Who am I really doing this for?’ I used to always beat myself up for working, or being on the phone, or answering emails, instead of being on the floor, playing with my kids. I used to be a major Type A person; I was very organized and very structured. I had a routine and I stuck to it. My children changed all that and it was almost like I had to reevaluate who I wanted to be as an adult. [laughs] Being a mom

means caring for someone else more than you care for yourself, and dealing with your fair share of chaos. That was the thing that kind of turned my world upside down, after of course, the fact that James and I uprooted from NYC to move to Charleston. I don’t regret a thing about any of those choices, but I have had to learn how to let things go. The best way that I’ve been able to do that is to prioritize. Rather than beating myself up about not getting all of my emails answered and all of our laundry washed and folded, I take it day by day. I make lists about what are the biggest priorities for the day and accomplish those first. The laundry can wait, the house doesn’t have to be perfectly clean and in order at every second of the day. I used to say that Little Adi + Co. was my third baby, since Aden and Hudson were born about a year apart, but now that we have a third son, Cason, Little Adi + Co. is definitely my fourth child. Just like my actual kids, I have to nurture the business or it won’t prosper. Finding balance is always a tricky thing, and my original intentions for starting down this path was to have fun and
do something I love. As much as I wanted to be a mother, I also needed to hold onto some part of myself, something else that I’m passionate about. Once I realized that it was ok to do both, I started to settle into a different routine of working, but accepting that not every single little thing is top priority. Through all of that process of understanding what I was facing and learning how to prioritize, it felt like I found myself and my drive again. Let’s switch gears a little and talk about your move to Charleston. Initially you were a little apprehensive about leaving the city, right? That’s a bit of an understatement, but yes. [laughs] I never envisioned myself leaving NYC. My career was in full swing and the future was bright on that front. But since James earned his Master’s degree at NYU through a scholarship from the Air Force, he owed them two years of service. It was a deal we both wholeheartedly agreed he should make so that other doors would open for his career. Once he graduated, he received an offer we absolutely could CH+D • Spring 2019 • 145

not refuse. But it took some time for them to get back to us about where this opportunity would take us. We thought we might be headed to LA, which was exciting. It’s really a funny story now, but when James called me at work the day that he found out, he said, ‘So, they told us where we’re going…’ His delivery was so painfully slow. [laughs] When he said we were going to Charleston, I honestly had never heard of it. And after about ten years in New York City, the idea of moving to a place that had significantly slower-paced lifestyle was a shock. But my boss at Baby Gap at the time was so great. She’s one of the main people who helped get me where I am today, either through teaching me about the industry, or generally sharing her wisdom with me about life. She said that we were incredibly lucky to be going to Charleston and that I would love it. Then she said something I’ll never forget, ‘Take this as an opportunity to find 146 • CH+D • Spring 2019
yourself. Hone in on your passions and do something you really love.’ Now that we’ve been here for eight years, we love it more than anywhere else we’ve ever lived and we’re pretty set on the fact that we’re never leaving. It’s such a great place to raise a family, plus, if we need a little ‘city fix,’ as James and I call it, we can just hop in the car and head to Atlanta or Charlotte for the weekend. But it’s always the best thing to come home to Charleston and know that our kids will grow up here, that the beach is so close, and that I can work from home ultimately doing what I really love. You designed the whole interior of your home, correct? What was your vision for the interior and how did you make that vision functional for your family? Right. When we moved into this house four years ago, the walls were this aqua
color that I thought was so pretty, so I decorated around that with a very coastal vibe throughout. We transitioned from New York City, so when we first got here it was great to have this whole beachy, coastal theme for the house. It made it feel like we were always on vacation, and that was, of course, super fun. But eventually it got to be a little stale for us in terms of what we needed for functionality. I find that I really love doing interiors. I’m a very visual person, so one of my favorite things is when I am in a space and feel at peace. When I strip away all of my background and experience and get back to the roots of my passion, I really just love to create. I love to curate. Anything visual falls into that category, so creating a beautiful interior gives me as much satisfaction as making clothing. My vision for recreating our spaces was actually something that James and I have talked about a lot over the years. We both
enjoy traveling, but even more than that, we love to come home. Why should we pay for a spa or hotel experience when we can create that look and feeling at home? I kind of took the design for our house from that idea. I have a lot of friends who see our white couch and white walls and say, ‘What possessed you to have so much white in your house with three small children and a dog?’ My answer is functionality. I only selected things that are kid-friendly, and easy. For example, the upholstery on the couch is a fabric that repels stains. So if the kids get something on the cushions, I can come behind them and wipe it right up. The walls are a similar situation. If the boys decide to add a mural to one, the paint I bought prevents markers, pens, pencils, crayons drawings and all kinds
of other stains from ruining the walls. It was also important for us to have kid-friendly design, so a lot of things in the house are designed or were curated to either stay out of their reach or not be breakable. When my husband and I got married, I knew that I needed to make the house a comfortable place for him as well as me, and I think I’ve finally gotten there. I’m surrounded by even more testosterone now, too, so I wanted to design spaces that appealed to everyone, especially in a few years. My office is a great example of how I design. Visually, everything meshes together really well. Plus, (when it’s clean) you’re surrounded by toys, but you have no idea, because of the storage system
with all of the baskets. I love how streamlined it is. The couch is a really comfortable sleeper sofa for guests, too, but it’s a pretty stylish couch, which is very useful. Almost everything in the house has more than just a visual use. Do you have a favorite room in the house? Or maybe a favorite feature of one of the room? I can go room to room and point out each part of that room that I love most. In the office, I really love that the rug, artwork, sofa, and the other design elements complement each other so perfectly. In the living room, I adore the white couch with the accent pillows, and the fact that it stays white because it’s covered in stain and water resistant microfiber upholstery, yet it’s still

soft and comfortable. In the kitchen and dining area, I particularly love the pairing of the light fixture with the table and chairs. It’s so modern and stylish. I’m not a slave to the current trends. The way I design is what makes me happy at the time and how it functions with the rest of my home. I’m definitely influenced by Australian and Scandanavian design and that boho surf subculture. If it doesn’t have a specific purpose, it probably doesn’t come home with me. Or if it does, it doesn’t stay in the house long. [laughs] What makes me truly happy is to see it all come together, and I think that goes back to my love for creating and curating. If the space makes me happy, then that’s my favorite space because of how it makes me feel. To me, it’s as much about the inviting nature of a room as it is the things that make up the experience. 148 • CH+D • Spring 2019
Now that you’ve been in the business for five years, what do you think is next for you and Little Adi + Co.? I’ll never stop being a creative person, that’s just who I am. Obviously I have plans to broaden Little Adi + Co. to take it to even higher levels than what we’ve reached now. There might just be a few more things I’ll add to my repertoire in the next few years, too. Since I’m a very visual person, I would love to start designing more interiors. I’ve also discovered I get a lot of joy from my blog. It’s been the most surprising part of this journey, honestly, and has started to be pretty therapeutic. Not only do I get to confess that my house does not look this clean every day, or admit to my readers and followers that my kids often drive me crazy, but I also get to bring people together. So many moms, both local and across the country have thanked me for letting them know that my life isn’t perfect, which lets
them know that they aren’t alone in their daily struggles either. Do you have any advice for our readers out there who are thinking of starting their own business? It’s going to be hard. It’s going to be hard in ways that you can’t predict. But it’s absolutely worth it. Take every success and every failure as an opportunity to learn more about yourself. There’s still something that starting and running your own business can teach you about yourself. Also, get to know the people around you and don’t be afraid to leverage your partnerships and always, always be helping others. Building your network is a huge part of success, but it’s also a huge part of giving back to the community and the people who helped you get where you are. Again, it’s going to be hard. You’re going to fail time and time again, but never give up and always follow your heart (and your gut). ❇

HANDWOVEN RUGS rugs. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 50 years since I started this journey! You are currently the owner and founder of Fine Rugs of Charleston. How did Fine Rugs of Charleston get off the ground and what products do you provide? Fine Rugs of Charleston turned fifteen years old this past summer. We got started here in 2003 in our location at 29 Broad Street. A few years later, in 2005, we moved to 482 King Street. Then, back in October of 2008 we came to 1523 Meeting Street. We’ve been at our current Meeting Street location for over 10 years now.

You have a new program that you’ve chosen to lead between the US and Afghanistan. What is the name of the program and what exactly is your role?

A
fghanistan. In many American minds this proper noun is often associated with the longest war our country has fought and continues to fight. As a country of great extremes, including the Hindu Kush mountains and the vast, hot deserts, Afghanistan’s saga is almost equally conflicting. Despite having bounced from one regime to another over its long history, though, Afghan culture remains rich with aspects of a unique heritage, a way of life that dates back centuries. Some, like Rob Leahy, who is heavily involved in a U.S. State Department sponsored 168 • CH+D • Spring 2019
project to maintain that heritage and the art of handmade rug making, still seek to preserve this craft, while also introducing the trade in these rugs to twenty-first century consumers. Rob, you have been in the business of rug making in one way or another for quite some time. How did you get started in this industry? I’ve been in the rug business since 1971, officially, but I really like to say I began as a stock boy in the rug division of a department store in Philadelphia in 1967. So my roots run deep when it comes to
The program is called Kabul Carpet Exports Center, or KCEC for short. We are technically based in Kabul, Afghanistan, though much of what we do is directed from the United States. Afghanistan has 33 million people with a cultural heritage of making the kind of handmade rugs that we sell here at Fine Rugs of Charleston. During the process of building and establishing a rug business like we have here, I constantly go out into the world to find new things to expand the rug selection we carry. In all my years of traveling, I’ve always believed that Afghanistan holds incredible promise in the handmade rug industry, considering their cultural heritage, their need for an economic boost, and the overall potential for growth. My role in the new program is as the Managing Director, but it initially began way back in 2007, when it was just a notion that I was pursuing. Since 2012 it has really been my primary passion and driving force. Myself and my company have partnered with the United State Government to put this program together for a branch of the State Department called the United States Agency for International Development. USAID has
made KCEC possible with the generous support of the American people. We’ve just grazed the topic of the Afghanistan economy, but let’s start closer to the beginning. How did this program come about and what is its primary goal? The purpose of the program is to put the Afghan manufacturers on even footing with some of the manufacturing countries around the world so that they can get their products out of the country and have them purchased easily from an otherwise closed economy. It’s really important for Afghanistan to begin to evolve its economy. Currently, much of the country hasn’t really seen many “modern” updates overall since 1979. The war-like zone they’ve been in since around the same time poses a security risk to many, which leads to few visitors and a stagnating economy. Our goal is to help rebuild that economy by embracing one of their great customs—weaving handmade rugs and carpets—and we can do that by providing opportunity to broaden the markets and get their product out into the world. We’re thinking of it not just as a craft we’re promoting, but a business that we’re also building around that craft.
Any economic endeavor is often more complicated than it first seems, and Afghanistan certainly has a complicated history. Can you describe your motivations behind pursuing this program? Rugs are a huge part of my life and have been for a long time. At the end of the day, this program boils down to more than beautiful handmade rugs and carpets. It’s all about livelihoods, cultural heritage, and boosting the economy of a troubled country any way we can. Afghanistan has a very unsafe and unstable reputation, but it is also a place filled with people whose roots run deep through history. It can be a touchy subject, but Afghanistan also has a reputation for the subjugation or repression of its women, who are the primary crafters of these handmade rugs. But regardless of anyone’s beliefs or cultural backgrounds, the KCEC program seeks to bolster the tradition of families who create these rugs. Tell us a little about the cultural aspects of the handmade Afghan rug and describe how the KCEC would like to help it make a name in the handmade rug market.
In Afghanistan the handmade rug or carpet business is a “cottage” industry. In other words, the rugs are made in the home, one knot at a time, by a family. Usually the younger and middle-aged women in the family weave the rug itself. The men provide the design, which they’ve received from a broker. They procure the wool, dye the yarns, and set up the loom to produce that particular rug pattern. The older women normally spin the yarn. Then, six or seven months later the men bring the rug back to the broker and that rug goes to market as a finished product. There has been plenty of evolution in this industry in countries with sophisticated infrastructures, meaning a constant power supply, which allows companies to manufacture rugs more quickly on machines. A large portion of the world’s rug production comes from China, Turkey, and Iran. India currently makes 70 percent of the world’s hand-knotted rugs, now. Even as so much of the world’s supply of rugs is migrating to machine made rugs, there is still demand for the style and beauty of fine handmade carpets. The timing is excellent for a country like Afghanistan to fill that market opportunity.

Deep, rich colors characterize each Afghan rug or carpet, often setting them apart from the crowd in terms of eye-catching details. No two rugs look exactly the same, even if one family were to weave the same pattern with the same colors, there would still be very slight variations in the dye, as well as the piling and other finishing touches.
It is clear that you’re very passionate about the work that KCEC is doing in Afghanistan and you mentioned that women are often the weavers of these rugs. How have you supported these women in the past and how will the program continue to support them? I have bought a lot of rugs in my lifetime and those rugs all have gone to create an improved lifestyle for the people that have made those rugs. Granted, the people who are physically handcrafting the rugs, as stated, are the women of the house. They normally work on making the rugs when they aren’t out doing everything else that their family life requires, such as working in the fields, cooking, and raising the children. Through the KCEC, we are looking at millions of dollars of sales that will create jobs in Afghanistan. This prospect will create jobs for the whole family unit. Afghanistan has five major cities, but no more than roughly 25 percent of people actually live in those cities. Which means that there are some 27 million people who live across the country in villages. This is where almost all of the rugs are woven. What are some of the cultural challenges you’ve faced in bringing this program

to Afghanistan in an attempt to open doors and create jobs? Getting things off the ground has been our first challenge. By taking an enterprise with no background or experience and that hasn’t exactly grown organically and trying to make it into a program that many might depend upon, well, it’s quite a feat. Not to mention taking what has been our idea and our passion and communicating that in a way that it also becomes someone else’s passion has also been a bit of a test. Right now we have twenty people in Afghanistan, and four people are here in the US. We’re looking to grow those numbers very soon. Organizing all of that in six short months is a bit challenging. The other big challenge that we face is to convince the rug-buying world that Afghanistan can live up to their expectations. Buyers of rugs, people who own their own businesses across the world are in much the same position I am as a rug-buyer; they like to physically see the products they’re buying. We like to meet the people who make them and we like to meet the families. But that’s a huge challenge in Afghanistan with the political instability that faces visitors and natives alike. Ultimately, the challenge is to get the
rug-buying world to see, despite some of the security issues, someone is there to protect both their interests and Afghani families who are making the rugs. It sounds like you’re confident that the Kabul Carpet Exports Center program can overcome those challenges. What do you foresee for the KCEC’s future successes and growth throughout the region? I would say that it will be successful in more ways than one. The dynamics of the handmade rug business are such that it needs new production. The trends in the rug trade are swinging back toward more color, meaning more intense patterns and brighter colors are returning. That’s something that we’ll help bring to the program as well—trendwatching and prediction. I see growth in the rise of popular tribal designs as well, which are common in Afghan designs. The Community Opens with Spots for Local Retailers As a recognizable part of the eastern side of Charleston’s skyline, the Cigar Factory has been around since its construction in 1881. Though it began as a cotton manufacturing facility, then remained empty for some time, it has recently been refurbished into a vintagemeets-modern conglomeration of office and retail spaces. As a new addition to that retail space, Domain Interiors by Bobbi Jo Engelby and Hausful are both participating

In December 2018, Kevin Kalman of Kalman Construction learned about a military family in need. This family was in the process of getting medical treatment for their newborn when their bathroom flooded and damaged the flooring as well as the toilet. When Kevin heard about this family, he instantly wanted to do something to help. He selflessly donated his time and resources to remodel the bathroom free of charge. The materials used for the project were donated by Melcer Tile and the tile labor was provided by Redstone Flooring, both free of charge as well. On February 21st, 2019 Kevin received a letter of recognition from the commander of the 437th Aerial Port Squadron and was
thanked for his contribution. The same day, Master Sergeant Elmer Sanchez, presented Kevin with a squadron coin that represents their team and the work that they do. “You showed up for one of our guys and helping him shoulder the stress of what his family was going through provided him with a breath of relief,” says Elmer. “It is inspiring and sets an example that people should follow on a daily basis.” Family means everything to Kevin and that was another reason he was so eager to step up and help.
