Magnificent Millwork Over the course of 75 years, Southern Lumber & Millwork has built a sturdy reputation across the Lowcountry. Recently, Thad Shuler (grandson of the original founder, Herman Albrecht Jr.) became president of the board and is spending more and more time educating homeowners about the benefits and distinctiveness of custom millwork.
What is your background in the lumber business? I got started at an early age. My grandfather founded Southern Lumber & Millwork, and my mom and uncles worked for and with him to create what it is today. Needless to say, I’ve been around it my whole life. What are some of the different products that Southern Lumber offers? We offer a wide range of products, such as framing, exterior windows and doors, interior doors, interior trim, and custom millwork. Within those categories, we are always happy to sit down with our clients, our builders, and our architects to make the best decisions when it comes to using wood in home projects, whether for interior or exterior conditions. What exactly is millwork? The term “millwork” comes from where the raw lumber is cut, which is traditionally in a sawmill. It’s a fairly broad term now, though, and refers to items such as base trim, crown moulding, door frames, interior doors, window casing, chair rails, and wood paneling, to name the major categories.

How can Southern Lumber help homeowners who are seeking to install custom millwork in their home? We follow each process from start to finish. That means we can make our own blades for a completely exclusive piece, or we can replicate, repair, and replace historic millwork, or provide a customer the raw materials for their own projects. There should be a lot of warmth in a home so I think it should be calming neutrals to go along with that and you can always accent with a color. She Said: Matte. I especially like Sherwin Williams Duration Matte. I have children and lots of fingerprints get on the wall and this is a wipeable f lat that I can clean with a cleaning eraser. It lets me have nice walls without compromising my favorite finish!
She Said: I like traditional, but it’s your house so you have to have a little bit of pop and a little bit of fun. Your personality needs to be portrayed in your home. I lean toward more classic styles with minimal use of what is trendy, but there are so many options for everyone!

He Said: I’m the complete opposite; I’m the bold guy. 1st Class is known for our neon brightness in everything we do and that definitely matches with my personality. I’m a big fan of “the bolder the better” and allowing your personality to live through your colors. He Said: Well, it definitely depends on the substrate you’re painting, but across the board, I’d have to say eggshell. It provides a wipeable surface but it bounces enough light that everybody feels like it’s warm. He Said: Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m a pretty bold guy and like to be a trendsetter versus a trend follower. For instance, the grays and the whites are really in right now with just about everything we do, however you can certainly accent very quickly with those colors by adding a magenta, chartreuse, or bright blue. This still allows your colors to represent your personality.

Taking a Look at the Cost of Hurricane Shutters As residents along the Southeastern coast, Hugo, Floyd, and Matthew are names that everyone knows. Those who have experienced the damage and devastation that descends in a hurricane’s wake understand the importance of preparation. Charleston Home + Design asked the professionals at Lowcountry Hurricane & Protection about the most effective ways to protect your home from the strongest storms.
Ease of Use Though relatively effective, nailing plywood to your windows before a storm is a multi-person job. Reducing stress and maximizing time management during storm prep can be an important element in protecting your family and your home. Just one person can make permanently installed safeguards, such as Bahama shutters, storm-ready in a timely fashion.
Defensive Discounts Shutters are installed to protect the envelope (aka the outer shell) of the home. In fact, the majority of hurricane damage is caused by failure of one or more parts of the home that create the envelope. Something as small as one broken window can break the seal, which could lead to losing the roof or worse. Most insurance companies provide incentives or credits in homeowner policies for homes that have installed protections and there is a South Carolina tax credit as well. Make sure to mention to your insurance agent that you have taken the right precautions to meet the requirements of the incentives.

~ ~ Steven Shell of Steven Shell Living At Home with
Since traveling the world to find interesting pieces of furniture and art is a primary aspect of Steven Shell’s career for his business, Steven Shell Living, it is only natural that his home would be filled with fascinating items. After finding out the news he was going to be a grandfather, Steven decided to put down roots near his family and established his Mt. Pleasant showroom. Over the years, he has curated a lovely home that features numerous exqui-

Since choosing the architectural style and building materials for the home wasn’t a priority for him, he has focused on showcasing his collected gems. This room holds several pieces that Steven has designed and sells in his store, as well as gems from his years of traveling, like an antique Islamic vase, an Indonesian loom table he transformed into a coffee table, and a wooden sculpture from Java.

This table is one from Steven’s latest collection that he designed. The tin-top, Goucho kitchen table is surrounded by mahogany French dining chairs. The inspiration behind this particular table and the accompanying collection came from a candlestick that he happened across during his travels.

In his dining room, Steven chose to continue combining his acquired artwork and furnishings with furniture that was created for his business. The German needlepoint rug pairs perfectly with the table from his Bloomsbury Collection and accompanying Gothic dining chairs. CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON The Craftspeople: Esthela and Samy Cuzmar
The Craft:
Stellar Engravings, owned and operated by Esthela and Samy Cuzmar, specializes in etching and engraving customization.
The Backstory:
Stellar Engraving opened in 2016 as an offshoot of Vencor, which focuses on etching and engraving for industrial purposes, and is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Esthela and Samy. After several successful joint efforts as Vencor with a nearby cabinetmaker in adding custom details to their pieces, the Cuzmars decided to pursue the world of custom creations. Together, with the help of several employees, they’ve helped to grow Stellar Engravings and it continues to expand in many ways.
The Process:
Since everything that the Cuzmars do is custom, their first step is to talk with a customer and learn the full picture of what he or she is looking for with a particular project. From there, they discuss materials, design, dimensions, and finishes. Once the major questions are answered, they are able to create mockups and 3D images of projects with their computer for the customers to look at and provide feedback. After a design is approved and all measurements are triple-checked for accuracy, the Cuzmars set out to bring these designs to life. Carefully, they insert the materials into the proper machine for the assignment; with three, high-performance etching and/or engraving machines in house, the possibilities are extensive. Once the machines do their part, the Cuzmars clean up the piece and prepare it for the next step or package it for the customer.

What is your favorite aspect of this particular home? One of my favorite aspects is the home’s detached “summer house.” This space is positioned at the upper deck level and was designed with sliding doors to open up to the outdoor living areas. With the custom designed curved bar, vaulted ceiling, and wood paneled walls, it’s a great area of the home to entertain guests and enjoy the Lowcountry weather.
Which distinctive features of this home illustrate your custom work? The interior trim details (which are seen throughout the home’s walls and ceiling), Ipe newel posts around the decks, a radius Ipe railing cap at the front balcony, and louvered custom garage doors all demonstrate our custom work.

He was registered in 1993 and started his firm, Bill Huey + Associates in 1994. Bill served on the Mount Pleasant Old Village Historic District Commission for 10 years and is a past president of the Charleston Custom Residential Architects Network—AIA CRAN. Bill currently serves on the Board of Architectural Review (BAR) for the city of Charleston.
What was the goal for the design of this house? The home was designed for three generations to enjoy. Our client's desire was to have an inviting gathering place for extended family and friends.
Why was it important to hire an architect for this project? Although the lot is very deep, the available buildable width required site specific design, custom sized to fit and meet the ordinances of the town. Integration of coordinated flood resistant, structural design was also critical and was coordinated by our firm.
What was the greatest challenge of this design? Oceanfront homes offer the challenge of durable construction and proper specification of building materials to accomplish that goal. Our extended experience with low maintenance, yet aesthetically pleasing materials was a benefit.

What were the owners’ desires for this space and how did you bring those requests to life? For this project, the property owners wanted to create a unique space that was inviting and comfortable. This hunting cottage needed to be a place that they could entertain business associates, family, and friends. I brought in furniture and décor that I thought would be functional for the space as well as incredibly cozy and stylish.
What did you enjoy the most about this project? I loved that the owners trusted me to run wild with the vision that I had. The clients never saw the space until it was finished. I knew what they wanted for this and they let me make it happen for them.
Why was it important to hire an interior designer for this project? I was able to take a very bare setting and transform it within the set budget into something truly unique. The property owners are incredibly busy and didn’t have the time to do the project and source items on their own. I curated the pieces from numerous sources, many from GDC Home, and elevated the cottage to what you see now. ucked away in a quiet corner on Daniel Island is an adorable cul-de-sac with a surprising find. Here, Dave and Amy Florez reside in their dream home, a contemporary interpretation of their functional and aesthetic desires for their second custom-built residence. “We built our last house and it was wonderful, but when we outgrew the space, we wanted something smart and efficient,” says Dave. By smart, he means that every inch of the home is utilized and serves an important practical purpose. The abode itself spans 3,500 square-feet, but because it was designed to maximize the marsh views as well as harness the usefulness of each room in the house, it doesn’t feel needlessly huge. “The floor plan is open and simple, but I
think it’s the glass that makes it feel much bigger,” Amy adds. The huge windows along most of the back of the structure, and the accordian door leading to the back deck were part of the challenge that faced builder Ryan Butler of SHELTER when Dave and Amy came to him with the plans. “With the shape of the lot, the amount of glass on the first story, and a few other details in the plans, it was a challenging house to build. Definitely the fun kind of challenge, though, since it was so easy to work with Dave and Amy, and Joel, from Thomas and Denzinger Architects.” One of those detail hurdles, aside from the glass walls that overlook the backyard and the marsh beyond, is the hexagonal dining room that extends from the kitchen and living area. “It’s one of my favorite

around the island, because it’s like a work of art that you could hang on the wall. It’s just so beautiful.”

Thoughtful details fill this home with small, wonderful surprises at every turn, as well. If guests aren’t drooling over the double-sided fireplace in the master suite (it heats the bedroom and the bathroom), then they might be marveling over the attention of the stair rail, or possibly ogling the way the shiplap and different tile elements work together to create subtle texture throughout the home. All agree that it was the open communication and cooperation between the Florezes, Ryan, and Joel throughout

rooms in the house,” Amy declares. Ryan agrees, “It was fun to create this room and even more exciting to see it with all the finishes now.” Ryan also loves the clean lines and the absence of traditional, ornate trim that is found throughout a majority of southern homes. Many of the other finishes are also outside the box, like the wood flooring, which is a European white oak (a species of tree that grows mostly in France and Germany) that boasts a very unique grain pattern. Also, there’s the leathered quartzite island countertop, chosen by Amy and Dave before anything else in the kitchen. Amy explains, “We worked with Joel and Ryan to design the whole kitchen

Carefully Created Adding custom-designed garage doors to the front of their Monck’s Corner home helped this couple boost the look of their house without generating a new focal point.
W
hen pulling up to this Monck’s Corner home via a long, tree-lined driveway, a stunning home that perfectly mixes traditional elements with modern touches greets you. The lush, natural landscaping leading up to this new construction might fool you into thinking this home is a renovation of a vintage Lowcountry house. Monck’s Corner residents Laura and Steve Droze continue working on their abode to add the finishing touches to this property. Both have been highly involved throughout the process. Carefully select-

ing architectural details, preserving as much of the natural landscape, and staying true to their original style goals have helped the couple begin to bring their ideas to life. The pair even lived in another building on the property to oversee the construction of their dream space. Companies like All About Garage Doors assisted them during this process to stay on the right path. “Whenever we meet with a homeowner, we try to get an idea of what they’re trying to accomplish when adding a garage, and Steve was very particular,” says Rob-
ert Gatch, Owner-Operator of All About Garage Doors. “Steve had already done some garage doors on another part of the property, but on the main house, he wanted to go with a different look with a lot of curb appeal.” The Droze’s self-described “southern, rustic, yet modern” home certainly packs a lot of curb appeal. “For the outside, we wanted a Southern looking home. We went with a metal roof and white, Hardie siding, with a lot of angles,” adds Steve, “which, I think, gives it a lot of dimension.” The design of the main

house’s garage doors came about specifically to meet their aesthetic and durability needs. The Drozes asked Robert to help them find something for their doors that would enhance their home’s look without becoming a focal point. When adding this special accent, they didn’t want people’s eyes drawn to the doors immediately, but instead to see how nicely they contrast the white of the rest of the home. “I suggested we use the accent brown doors, which are a carriage style that appears to be wood. With this wood grain finish, the Drozes can achieve
the look of a solid wood door with the maintenance free durability of steel,” adds Robert. The garage doors help to create a new level of interest on the front of the home without distracting from the simplistic beauty it has. As the years go by, the foliage might grow and more might be added to the home, but the durable exterior of the garage doors will remain. v

Abiding in Awendaw After living in Summerville, near their daughter and grandchildren, Lonny and Barbara Gordon decided to construct their dream home in their own corner of paradise.

he curved interior arches, relaxed color palette, and bright sunlight streaming into Lonny and Barbara Gordon’s home all create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. That was exactly the goal when they imagined building their dream home to get away from the hustle and bustle of Summerville. After viewing the marsh panoramas from their back deck (or nearly any other room on the first or second floor), it’s impossible to believe that they could have chosen another location. “We wanted a home that was inviting and livable for years to come,” says Lonny. “Our daughter lives in Charleston as well, and we wanted to be able to stay here in this home for a long time.” Their desire to age in place, as well
as work with a reputable team, led the Gordons to Herlong & Associates and Sea Island Builders as their dynamic architect and builder duo. “It was clear to us that architect Steve Herlong (of Herlong & Associates) and his team, plus builder Jason Fowler (of Sea Island Builders) and his team were the perfect pair for us to work with,” explains Lonny. Barbara adds, “Herlong and Sea Island Builders kept us in the loop every step of the way. If I had questions about anything, they never made me feel like what I was asking was silly.” Lonny, as an engineer, was deeply involved in everything from the drawing board to the very end of the process. “He’s picky,” Barbara teases. “To be

included in the initial progression of our home, like the foundation and the structural aspects, was important and also extremely interesting for me,” replies Lonny with a knowing smile. Architect Bronwyn Lurkin of Herlong & Associates and Jason joined their considerable experience and talents to oversee the whole project once the plans were completed. From there, building the home was a true collaborative effort by everyone.

“The Gordons and Bronwyn were great to work with. Lonny was on site every day, asking questions and keeping us all on track,” Jason adds with a laugh. To which, Bronwyn supplies, “Everything went so smoothly because we were able to talk prices in conjunction with ideas and plans during the early stages of each phase of the house.” According to Steve, Jason, Bronwyn, and the Gordons, the open communication between them was critical to

Beautifully Bold Chic combinations of colors and textures throughout every element of interior designer Karen Alagna’s Mt. Pleasant home help transform this house into a work of art.
“T
he element of surprise is not present very often and I think it is so important,” exclaims Mt. Pleasant homeowner and designer Karen Alagna. This musing perfectly summarizes the look of her home. A visual feast greets any guest immediately upon entering through the front door. With the chartreuse and charcoal dining room on the left, the muted gray leopard print staircase straight ahead, and the lavender living room to the right, trying to figure out which space to explore first

proves to be tricky. Every aspect of her home was painstakingly chosen to maintain the idea of interest and surprise without straying too far from the styling traditions of Charleston. Karen let no element go unnoticed during this complete renovation after moving from Manhattan over two and a half years ago. From Osborne and Little wallpaper, matte floor finishes, and metallic roller shades from Budget Blinds, nothing entered this home if it didn’t have a purpose for both function and style.
When working with vendors to bring her visions to life, Karen came with clear wants and needs. “When Karen came in, we knew that we were going to get to do something a little different here because once you meet her, you can feel her design passion and you start to get a little extra excited and inspired,” says Jill Gioia, Marketing and Sales Coordinator at Budget Blinds of Charleston. “Typically, when we first get a new customer, we like to meet with them and find out what a person’s vibe or taste is. It’s hard to pinpoint Karen’s because it’s so cool, interesting, and professional.”
Throughout Karen’s home, you’ll find the Hunter Douglas line of cordless roller shades. s the saying goes, “it takes a village to raise a child,” so it goes for this Daniel Island house. It took a talented team to raise an idea into a home. Dent and Gina Guarino enlisted JacksonBuilt Custom Homes to help them create an abode that meets all of their specific wants and needs. Throughout the process, the Guarinos worked with the team at JacksonBuilt making sure that every detail turned out just right. “We've found we can create extraordinary results by welcoming opportunities for collaboration,” explains Richard Jackson, Owner of JacksonBuilt. “Our team draws on our strong network of creative professionals who have the skills to turn a client's wishlist into a reality.” After Richard helped lead the Guarinos to Clarke Design Group
to create the floorplans, the group got together to start putting all of the plans in action. Allison Casper, Director of Design for JacksonBuilt is another design member who worked on this house. Allison partnered closely with Gina on the design of the home to make sure that it not only reflected the aesthetical design goals of the family, but that all of the functional needs were met as well. “Once the floorplan was finalized, we started working together on the interior selections,” adds Allison. “For the look of the home, we got a lot of inspiration from the Guarino family’s travels to Europe and specifically the South of France.” Throughout the first floor of the home you can see those styling influences and the attention to the requests of the Guarinos. From the late 1800s chandelier in the sitting room, to the finishes of the flooring, to the 400-pound, reclaimed wood beams in the kitchen, the team’s effort to execute the wishes of the Guarinos is evident. “Gina’s desires to only include pieces that she loves and to integrate her collection of items that have a story was a vital aspect of the design for this home,” mentions Caroline deVlaming Farrior of deVlaming Design, who joined the Jackson Built team. Aside from the look of the home, the layout of the home was crucial. With two growing children, Gina and Dent wanted a space for them to hang out in with their friends that was out of the way, yet

it needed to be an easy spot to keep an eye on them. For this, the JacksonBuilt ensemble integrated an entrance to the “teen suite” separate from the main house but not to far removed so that it felt isolated. All of these elements, plus many more, were made possible by the teamwork and planning of all parties involved. Casually Coastal Once this transplanted couple discovered Charleston’s southern charm, they reached out to Max Crosby Construction to build their dream home on Daniel Island.
W
hen Daniel Island homeowners Jonathon and Andrea Dussault met Jamison Howard of Max Crosby Construction, they knew they’d found a kindred spirit as well as the best man for the task of building their idyllic Lowcountry abode.

The hunt for a builder didn’t take as long as they had originally thought it might, though. “Our realtor actually suggested Jamison at Max Crosby,” Andrea recollects. As second-time (and therefore seasoned) homebuilders, the Dussaults knew all about doing their research first.
And that research led them right back to Max Crosby Construction. “We really knew what we wanted in terms of functionality and style,” Andrea explains. “And when we saw some of Jamison’s past projects, they all fit

exactly with our vision.” The details in Jamison’s portfolio, such as trim work, free-flowing floor plans, and overall quality of craftsmanship, immediately impressed Jonathon and Andrea. From there, they worked closely with their architect Phil Clarke (of the Clarke Design Group), Jamison, and his designer, Widney Pierson, to design the ideal, coastal-
casual house with plenty of outdoor living spaces. Since Andrea had her own interior design firm while the Dussaults lived in Connecticut, she was very involved in choosing the finishes of that home as well as this house. “Andrea would come back with a few choices for certain things, but she would always lead with
the one she thought would be best,” jokes Jonathon. “I love everything we picked, though, and the kids even had a say in several aspects of the design.” For example, one of the children’s musthaves was a second-story deck area that overlooked the pool. vice on different materials, too. “Working with the Dussaults was practically a flawless process, since they knew so much about what they wanted, and had already built a home once before. But there were also plenty of instances where we talked over multiple features to make the best decisions for the Lowcountry climate and their family’s lifestyle,” says Widney. She went to every meeting with the architect and subcontractors, every shopping trip, and according to the Dussaults, her input was invaluable. The best advice the Dussaults and Widney can share about building a

custom home? Know what you want from your house before you search for a builder and find one who meshes with your personality. “We couldn’t trust Jamison and Widney more than if they were family,” describes Jonathon. Life Spotlight in the
Iconic Charleston native, Thomas Ravenel, opens the doors to his historic home and tells of his life, his properties, and his future plans. Story by Laura Jones | Photography by Patrick Brickman & Colin Voigt
Many might recognize the Ravenel name from the bridge that has become our city’s most prominent symbol, or perhaps as a name they’ve heard on Bravo’s hit reality show Southern Charm. Beyond those more recent achievements, the Ravenel family and city of Charleston’s long history together began in the 1680s long before either of those entities. Thomas Ravenel is one scion of this family dynasty and has established his life here with his two young children. Throughout the years he has made a name for himself in his own right with his business ventures, success on the polo field, and now as a reality TV star. While learning and growing from his personal history, he draws on the strong past of Charleston and the Ravenels that have come before him as he moves forward to help continue the family legacy for future generations. It didn’t take me long to see how appropriate it is that Thomas is a cast member of a show titled Southern Charm. This charismatic man “can charm a lamp post” (as my grandmother would’ve said) with his quick wit, flourishing stories, and friendly tone. Within minutes of meeting him for the first time, I knew that my coworkers and I were in for a great experience. Immediately after introductions were finished, Thomas began beaming with pride when speaking about his children and gave us a tour of his downtown home, pointing out treasured family heirlooms and explaining their historical relevance. When I sat to and chat with him, the Charleston native readily shared his riveting story.

What was it like growing up not only as the youngest of six kids, but also as a member of such a renowned Charleston family? Well, like you said, I am the youngest of six, but my siblings weren’t in the house much because by the time I was in the fifth grade my brother William, who has Down syndrome, wasn’t living with us anymore and my next oldest sister had gone off to college. Also, my parents divorced and my mother got a job, so I went from the youngest of six in this

big, booming family to basically a latchkey kid in a huge house. There wasn’t a whole lot of structure for me at home and unlike my siblings, who went to private schools with our prestigious last name, like Ashley Hall, Porter Guard, and College Prep, I went to a public school. That’s all right though, because I excelled in sports and I did fine. I was captain of my football team and wrestling squad while there. After that though, my father thought I needed more discipline so I went to The Citadel.
The Citadel is a great place for somebody looking for a more structured college experience. What was your experience like there and how did you adjust? At The Citadel, I think I probably had a record for the most tours [with a wink and a laugh] while there. I was on Corps Squad even though I had torn up my knee playing football, and, since I was on Corps Squad, I was able to postpone my punishment orders until summer. Also, I would serve confinements in lieu of tours, which confinements

were where you had to sit in your room and study, so it worked out. Even with my knee, I started all four years on the wrestling team. It was a challenge for me there because, well, I didn’t really like authority. Having not really had it growing up, I rebelled against it. What were you like as a captain on these high school teams given
your feelings towards authority at the time? [Laughs] I was constantly telling the coaches what to do. One time, I told them, ‘Look, you’ve got a guy who is a second string defensive lineman who runs a 4.4 second 40 and we have zero offense yet he’s sitting on the bench. Why don’t we put him at tailback?’
When they finally did that, we scored five touchdowns. Another time we had a guy who was a second-string guard, who was an absolute animal and a very instinctive player, so I suggested that we put him at nose guard and tell him to just go after the ball. After that, he was making sacks behind the line and because of that, he ended up going to college. He thanks

me to this day for arguing so much for him. You’ve got to find a way to put your people in the best places. I’ve always carried that philosophy and have used it in my real estate business. Obviously you’ve learned a lot from your years as a student athlete and as a student leader. How did you use that knowledge and experience when you ventured into the “real world”? Like I said, using your people in the right roles is so important. A prime example is my sister. I brought her on 20 years ago to work with me and she just has stacks of paper all over her of-

fice that have probably been there since day one. She’s never been able to organize anything. However, I could send her into a person’s home and she’d come right out with a signed contract. I could’ve sent in somebody with the most organized office and the best business degree, but it might’ve taken them three years to land that contract. My sister just has the best personality and she can land any contract. It’s all about the right people in the right spots. As an owner of your own business, what was your leadership strategy once you arranged all of those people in place?
In business, you’ve got to perform. I did what I did best and then I’d delegate the rest; in that, I had to train people. In some ways, the most important thing I ever did was train people. I said to them, ‘This is how it is going to be done, but if you want to innovate or improve, show me something and you’ll be rewarded for it.’ My motivation in training these people is that if I trained somebody to do a particular function, then I’d never have to do that function ever again. Even if somebody left me, I would ask them to give me three weeks and train their successor. One of the things I have a sense of gratification about is the fact that everybody who has ever worked for me has had a very successful career. They’ve gone on to make a lot of money as developers, brokers, or as real estate moguls.

Something that comes to mind is that back in the 90s when I moved to Atlanta, I read a book about H.W. Bush and how he got up at 5:25 every morning, so I decided I’d get up then, too. I woke up at 5:25 and then I’d work until midnight everyday. I’d do a lot of work in the office, but beyond that, I’d even go out on the weekends and look at sites. You know, all of my sites that I found are still there today or have been bought out by a bigger company for millions of dollars. I picked all of the best sites and I attribute that to my terrible sense of direction. Seriously, I’d literally have to drive to these sites over and over and over again and by then I’d know them so damn well before it clicked for me.
the renovation of this house as well. Tell us a little bit about your most recent home purchase and the renovation process with it. This house is one of three of the Category I historic homes, according to the National Register of History Places, in Charleston. To find the next closest, you’d have to go out to Asheville to The Biltmore estate. This house got that rating because of the woodwork. You can tell by looking at the mantles, moulding, and other woodwork around this room that it is special. When I purchased the house, the priority was to get the backhouse in shape for me to live in so that I could have a place to stay in town; otherwise, I was in hotel rooms or at the plantation house and commuting. Now I’m trying to fix up the main house and find ways to make that

more functional while restoring it to its original glory. I’ve brought a lot of people in to work on this house. For me though, hiring on more people wasn’t about having more cooks in the kitchen, it was about having the right cooks in the kitchen to get everything done. Have you encountered many historical restrictions or various challenges during this home’s renovation process? No, we didn’t have any BAR issues because we didn’t really change the architecture at all. We’ve just restored the home to its former brilliance. We bought the house from the bank and had to redo the entire pump system and had to do a lot of work in terms of dealing with drainage issues. We also had to deal with roof issues. We had to coat the copper roof with hy-

drocoat. Oh, and on the outside we did the white gutters instead of copper, which is kind of a faux pas, but we’ll deal with that later.
arrange the entire placement. There are still a lot of things I want to do to this home going forward, but that’ll take a while.
For the interior of the home, a lot of work has been for restoration purposes as well as to make it more your style. What are some of the things that you’ve done?
The work you’ve done on this home so far is beautiful. I understand that you’ve renovated your home on Edisto Island as well, and have adapted part of it for your love of polo. How did this passion and the later renovation come about?
I’ve been working with my interior designer, Carolyn Griffith, to help pull this house together. We’ve done some painting and have tried to downplay some of the marble and stonework that has been added to the home throughout the years. We had to try to adapt to this space to figure out where to place all of my furniture and my art collection. I acquired a lot of items to furnish and decorate my last home, which was much larger than this one, and it’s been a real puzzle trying to re-
I’ve been playing polo for about ten years now. That all started when I went to this fundraiser. They had a silent auction there and one of the items was a set of polo lessons. It had a minimum bid of $1,500 dollars on there and evidently nobody else bid on it. They called me a couple weeks later (at this point I’d forgotten about it) and they said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve won the polo

Life in the Spotlight lessons.’ So I took the lessons and I got hooked. Before all of that though I had grown up watching my stepbrothers play. Since I grew up watching the sport, when I saw it on the silent auction, it really intrigued me. As I got into the sport a little bit, I started looking around my property out at Edisto. On it I had all of these beautiful oaks and then in the middle of that beauty were these drab pecan trees. I had a girlfriend at the time, who also played polo, and she encouraged me to have more to do out there other than be on the boat, which led to the idea of a polo field. After I talked with the right people, (I had the property turned into a land conservatory) I had the pecan trees cleared, built a barn, and established the field. Unfortunately, there isn’t much polo in Charleston though. All of the polo around here is in Aiken. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting at least three polo players up there. Recently I’ve downsized my polo playing a little bit. I really love the sport and there’s a lot of adrenaline riding a 1,000 to 1,200 pound animal going 35 to 40 miles per hour. However, I’ve seen a lot of people get hurt. It is the second most dangerous sport, af-
terall. There are a lot of rules to protect people, but it’s dangerous. Now that I have two kids, I’m contemplating getting out of the sport all together. Also, polo is very expensive. A friend of mine told me, ‘Hey Thomas, I’ve got a sport for you and it only costs $200; it’s called tennis and all you need is a racket.’ With polo, it might cost $6,000 to buy hay just for one horse per year. Then having your own field, there’s a whole lot that goes into it. They call it “the king of sports and the sport of kings.” Polo is expensive and I have kids now and they’re expensive. You’ve been enthusiastically expressing the changes you’ve made to your life and homes since becoming a father. What are some of your favorite parts of fatherhood? I love to get on the floor with them and play. We wrestle and tickle or I’ll read to them. Just the little things like taking them for a stroll and going to the park are fun. I love to watch them grow; its fun seeing all of their firsts like crawling, walking, and beginning to speak. Little Saint started speaking his first words yesterday. He started saying,

The living room is bright and airy, full of windows to let in the Sullivan’s Island sunshine.
“uh oh,” but to see him start to make sounds that mean something is just great. Kids go through slow, almost imperceptible growth, but it is all exciting. With parenting, you’re constantly getting that “wow” experience.
I’ve enjoyed being on it; it’s a lot of fun. It always seems like towards the end of the shooting each season it becomes highly pressurized and all of the drama kind of comes to a crescendo. Well, [laughs] like we saw at the end of last
Going forward, what do you think your career path looks like? Well, I’ve done quite well in business and right now I’m maintaining my real estate portfolio. I own a couple of development sites that were ready to go prior to the 2008 Lehman Brothers meltdown, so I have those ready to develop still. I basically quit [looking for new projects] about ten or 15 years ago to venture into politics. About 90% of what I do now is maintaining my existing portfolio. Perhaps I’ll develop a couple more shopping centers, but what I’ve done already, and keeping that up, gives me a comfortable life and keeps me busy. Honestly, my kids are my main focus at this point. Also, I am on that TV show now and that helps to pay some of the bills. The show is a two to three month job every year. The more success we have every year, the more episodes they order. We went from eight episodes and now I think we’re up to about 15 or sixteen. We’ll just have to see how season four goes, and if it turns out as well as I think it will, then they’ll have to start paying us a lot more money and they’ll have to order a lot more episodes [laughs]. Speaking of the show, have you enjoyed being a part of it?
season, sometimes it ends with an explosion. It does get tough, but we have to keep it all compartmentalized and try not to take it too seriously. We all just have to remember to keep our emotions in check and try not to let it get to us too much. What do you think the future holds for the Ravenel family and its relationship with Charleston?
I think that the Ravenels will continue to be one of the leading families in Charleston. We’re very active in the community and the church. We all also work to maintain some of the old Charleston traditions. I’ve personally inherited a legacy of giving back. I learned a lot from my mother who has done a tremendous amount of work for the less fortunate and the disabled. My father taught me about giving back because he has done so much with rebuilding homes and neighborhoods. He’s accomplished a lot on the east side of town and I’ve continued that legacy. He has been sort of a pioneer in bringing some areas back. None of it has been profitable or anything like that; he has always done it because he’s enjoyed it and what it does for the city and I’ve continued with that. I’ve restored four or five houses while my father completed innumerable houses throughout the years. Currently, I’m renovating 635 East Bay Street, which has a beautiful, Greek revival colonnade. It’s about to be completely renovated to its former grandeur. We’re beautifying the city in many ways that you can see, but we’re also giving back and contributing in ways that you can’t with various donations, and support. Mt. Pleasant Design Center Grand Opening The Mt. Pleasant Design Center opened its doors to customers at their grand opening in November. Restoring a 120-Year-Old Indigo Farm of the renovation process started with the exterior siding of the house, which they painted Indigo Blue to pay homage to the home’s past. Then they painstakingly hand stained every deck board and hand painted the ornate bead boarding and wainscoting throughout the home. Perhaps the most difficult part of restoring the home came down to the 60plus original windows. The team took to the local mills to find pieces that fit the home and mirrored the original architecture and proceeded to hand paint each piece. E
ver wondered what goes into restoring a 120-year-old Charleston home? Cori Smith and a team of Lowcountry designers found out when they started working on an old indigo farm just outside of Charleston recently. The project, which has since been featured on the DIY Network's series Restore Charleston, consisted of a complete restoration of both the inside and the outside of the home. A general contractor helped the project stay on track, but it was a true labor of love for this house to be refurbished according to historical standards. Every color and stain was chosen specifically to mirror the story of the home. 1st Class Painting & Restoration was in charge of all the painting, prep work, and staining. Their part
