After 39 season on air, the This Old House team has finally found a couple of properties in our area that were perfect for their show. We had the privilege of following the wonderful cast and crew for a great deal of their time working on the Hasell Street home. Getting to see the transformation and the true second chance that this home is being given is remarkable. The help from the students at the American College of Building Arts also plays well, not only with our issue’s theme, but with This Old House’s Generation NEXT initiative to see a fresh generation pickup trades. Even though the This Old House team probably isn’t available to revamp your Charleston abode, you can still renovate or build a new bathroom! Our extensive and stunning Bathroom Feature showcases an abundance of examples of the work that these Lowcountry professionals can do for you.

t’s so cliché to, well for starters use the phrase “it is so cliché,” and to say that spring is a season for new life and fresh starts. That cliché fits so perfectly for this issue, and for me personally, that I figured, why fight it? On a personal note, as you can tell from the picture, my husband and I are expecting our first little one very soon! We are overthe-moon excited for this new life that is joining the family. Everywhere I look I’m seeing fresh growth, positive changes, and momentous adventures. For this issue in particular, our

Health Conscious Décor Aoife Freeman chatted with Charleston Home + Design magazine about her wellness boutique and how using décor to promote well-being can help homeowners stay happy and healthy.

How did you get started in the industry? The health and wellness industry was a hobby of mine for many years. I started in 2009 by getting my Yoga Teacher Training Certificate. Since then, I have implemented prayer and meditation into my daily life and have experienced the benefits first-hand. When I moved to Charleston, I was eager to experience a slower pace and live a life that was more aligned with my Higher Self, but since I was unable to find a store that supported my lifestyle, I decided to create one. What services and products do you provide for customers? We offer a variety of treatments that are focused on supporting a person to align the physical body with the spiritual. We have a massage therapist, a luxurious hydro-therapeutic tub for detoxifying, and a new acupuncturist who offers spiritual support through dialog

and acupuncture therapy, depending on individual needs. One of my favorite services we provide is our in-home appointment service to restore the energetic balance of a homeowner’s space. Lastly, yoga and meditation classes began in February in our studio. Our mission is to ensure our clients have what they need to begin or continue a spiritual practice. What trends are you seeing in the wellness décor industry? Many people are becoming more and more aware of the benefits that sacred spaces at home provide for them. Crystals and salt lamps are a great way to improve the energy of a room. We sell crystal coasters and healing minerals, soapstone bookends, and essentials oils and burners, all of which will bring a calming atmosphere. Adding meditation cushions, throw blankets, and pillows are great ways to improve your sacred space. Having plants and greenery in any area will make it more inviting.

He Said: Jeremy Said: Salt systems have been one of the best advancements in the pool industry and are my sanitizing system of choice. First, salt doesn’t evaporate like chlorine does, and unless the salt levels become lower through dilution, the pool can produce chlorine as needed as a bi-product of splitting the salt molecule. Jeremy Said: Personally, I prefer a custom shape or free-form pool because you get exactly what you want in your backyard. The possibilities are endless. Jeremy Said: I would splurge on equipment automation and controls. In today’s world we are all connected to our smartphones, so why not be able to control your pool from your phone, too? Automation allows for control of all pool equipment including schedules, pool and landscape lighting, water features, and heaters.

He Said: Type of Sanitizing System?

Where Would You Splurge?

Shaun Said: I agree. I would choose a salt system. It is a great way to sanitize the pool without adding unnecessary amounts of chlorine, it requires minimal oversight, and it’s generally better for your skin. The end result is a more pleasant swimming experience.

Shaun Said: I like a rectangular-shaped pool. I prefer a simple design with a few water features around the pool.

Shaun Said: I would splurge on the water features. Water features with a fire aspect, natural rock accents, or a waterfall make quite a statement and can create the perfect relaxing atmosphere. Another place I would splurge is a granite or concrete pool because the shape and design options are endless.

HOMEWORK At Home with

Thomas & Ashley Lauderdale of Advanced Kitchen Designs of Charleston When building their home on James Island last year, Thomas and Ashley Lauderdale needed a beautiful

The Lauderdale’s stunning kitchen is designed with style and function in mind. Thomas used his vast cabinetry design knowledge to fashion their space into one that best suited their needs. That meant maintaining areas of separation within the room, yet creating a cohesive picture. “We like using more subtle details,” describes Thomas, which is demonstrated by the full overlay lower cabinetry with a blend of inset cabinets in the island and upper cabinets, all from Smithport Custom Cabinetry. Also, the contrasting blue island with a walnut butcher block countertop and the white granite waterfall countertop of the second island showcase this as well.

A special feature that Thomas designed is the wine storage area just beyond the kitchen. It’s a wonderfully modern statement comprised of individual blue panels with metal pegs and a custominset shelving piece, which was made by Advanced Kitchen Designs and then separately wrapped in stainless steel. From there, the whole storage area was enclosed by clear glass doors, which were crafted by the team at Sweetwater Glass.

Thomas is especially pleased with the Thermador refrigerator, which allows him to extend the panels past the typical 84" height of the actual appliances to over 102" tall to further give a custom look and feature. CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON The Craftsmen:

Drew Taylor, the owner, works alongside his team of craftsmen at Carpenters Restoration.

The Craft:

The tradesmen use an assortment of modern and traditional methods to create custom millwork, cabinetry, and furniture.

The Backstory:

Drew formally studied cabinetry and furniture craftsmanship in Eastern Ontario and served an apprenticeship under Master Journeyman, Cabinetmaker, and Professor John McKinlayKey before moving to the much warmer climate of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Once he arrived in the Lowcountry, Drew began working for Carpenters Restoration, and in 2013, he purchased the company when its previous owner retired. Throughout the years, Drew has come to view woodworking as a life-long journey that always brings new adventures and learning experiences along the way.

The Process:

Whether homeowners are looking for new kitchen cabinetry, refinished cabinetry, or a custom piece of furniture, Carpenters Restoration works on a myriad of different projects to provide a comprehensive experience for their clients. Generally, Drew and his crew will accept a job and then bring the specs back to the workshop, where they use a CNC machine and a moving table saw to do some of the more laborintensive wood cuts. From there, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll bring the different parts of the project to the assembly area, where each piece of wood is either passed through the sanding machine or manually sanded, depending on the intricacy of the design. The workshop also boasts a hightech room for painting and finishing, in which pieces from a new assembly job or a kitchen refinishing project can be completed skillfully and efficiently.

4 (1) Drew Taylor of Carpenters Restoration (2) A clamp rack is used to press and hold different pieces of wood together during the creation process for various reasons, like adding depth or strength to pieces of cabinetry, or enhancing detail to a special project. (3) This hinge machine works closely with the CNC to drill holes for the hidden cup hinges that support cabinet doors. (4) Drew prepares the CNC before and after it has cut the wood, first to make sure the wood is held tightly in place, and afterward, to remove any excess sawdust and inspect the results. (5) The CNC machine cuts a large piece of wood to exact specifications to help streamline the process, which leads to a faster and more accurate assembly as well. (6) The live edge slab for this custom black walnut table came down from Asheville for Drew to treat with a clear, flat finish before delivering it to its permanent home.

Charleston Amish Furniture All over town we are seeing “live edge” furniture products. What does that phrase actually mean? Something made with a “live edge” is literally a slice out of the center of the tree. For a large table, think of the piece of wood going vertical; the wood for that is an eightfoot slice out of the center of the tree. The edges that you see and feel are actually the outside edges of the tree. Live edges come in what is called a “winter edge” or a “summer edge.” If the tree was cut down in the summer, the bark will be missing; the sap is active and the bark naturally falls off. If you see the bark on the edge, it indicates that the tree was cut down in the winter. For our tables like that, the wood is all natural; you can see, feel, and touch the difference in the wood. Having durable fabric is important for many consumers when purchasing new furniture. What are some things people should keep in mind?

For us, we try to be as thorough as we can when we plan these jobs. Experience plays a big part in it because if we've been in similar houses, we kind of know what to expect behind the walls, but sometimes there is something there we don’t see or can’t predict. We spell that out in the initial contract and have a clause for the unforeseen things. When those kinds of things occur, we handle them right away and if it is an additional charge, we explain what it is going to be, and they accept or decline it before we go on.

Aesthetically, I’d say the biggest trend right now is barn doors; everybody loves a barn door. Maybe some of the more permanent trends are the big, floating islands. Islands are popular because they provide lots of seating at the bar, storage, and are quite functional when entertaining. Pedestal tubs and slipper tubs are definitely trending and have been for a few years. I think pedestal tubs are kind of small, but some of the people I talk to love them. Interestingly, most of the people I speak to reveal that they don’t even take baths, but because they are really pretty, homeowners want tubs in their bathroom anyway!

We have many options for low maintenance or durable fabrics. Sunbrella is known as an outdoor fabric, but they have many options that mimic the the texture of a normal interior material, while retaining Subrella's awesome stain-fighting and repelling qualities. Company: Grayhawk Homes of SC Credentials: Anthony received a Construction Management degree and has 19 years of construction experience in the Lowcountry. He worked his way up from operating pump trucks and digging footings years ago with a different company to become the City Manager of Coastal Carolina for Grayhawk Homes of SC. In between that time, he was a project manager on numerous high-end homes throughout the Kiawah, Seabrook, and Mt. Pleasant areas. In 2016, Anthony began his time with Grayhawk.

What are some of the unique aspects of this home? One unique aspect to make note of is the master bathroom with the large, tiled shower. The big wall tiles match perfectly with the mosaic floor and convenient shower bench. The gourmet kitchen features ample elbow room for many people to gather around the island. Actually, the whole house was built with the concept of “extra elbow room” in mind for those who like a little more space.

What is your favorite design element or feature of this house? For me, the Lowcountry look of the front has to be one of my favorite features. The porch is very classic Charleston and the overall façade gives off a great, homey feeling. Also, I like adding extra trim work and special details, like shiplap siding to the inside, to give this home a little more personality and character. It’s the little touches and details that we can add to a property that make it special.

What advice do you give to homeowners looking to build a semi-custom home? Building a semi-custom home for most people is hard when there are too many products and finishes to choose from for each room. Company: Allen Design Credentials: Elizabeth is a native Charlestonian and graduate of Clemson University. From an early age, Elizabeth had a great love and appreciation for the beauty and history of the buildings and houses in Charleston. She now has over 24 years of experience in the field of architecture and opened her own firm here in Charleston in 2003.

What was the goal for the design of this home? This home was designed to bring together family and friends. It needed to be a very beautiful, yet functional space for everyday life and capable of accommodating larger gatherings. Capturing the breathtaking view of the marsh was paramount in the design of the home. Also, the ability to extend the living space onto the expansive back porch was a top priority.

Why was it important for the homeowners to work with an architect on this project? The family owned the property for many years before building on it and had spent much of that time dreaming about what they wanted in a new home. By choosing to hire an architect, we were able to bring all of their visions and desires together and marry them with the requirements of the site location, flood zone, neighborhood restrictions, construction methods and materials, and, most importantly, their budget.

What were some of the challenges you faced in bringing this design to life? Finding the perfect position for the house was the greatest challenge. The lot has a unique marsh frontage, which, if utilized advantageously, would incorporate all of the water views at the back, as well as the river in both directions throughout the house. In addition, there are grand oak trees in the front and side yards that needed to be preserved and protected. These challenges were wonderful design opportunities that enabled us to create the ideal floor plan and plenty of architectural details.

What are your favorite features of this home? The kitchen in this house is an architectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dream. Every space was meticulously designed with many custom details. In addition, the back porch is cozy enough for a few people to gather around the fireplace, yet large enough to entertain a large group of people. Company: MW Hunter Custom Interiors Credentials: Melissa, a Charleston native, graduated from Winthrop College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Design. She founded MW Hunter Custom Interiors nearly 20 years ago, which is a full-service interior design company. She enjoys working with clients whether it is for new construction, a remodel, or for the South Carolina Film Commission.

What were some of the homeowner’s design goals ? In the twin bedroom, the homeowner wanted to create a really fun and crisp look filled with patterns. I’ve been working with her on her house for approximately eight years now and one challenge was trying to make that white and teal wallpaper we had chosen work. She loves patterns and the teal color, that’s all part of her motif, so we had to try to take that and work it in with what she already owned.

What were some of the challenges of this design? Trying to give both of these rooms their own look was one of the biggest challenges. You can see both rooms at the same time from the hallway, and the hallway has its own wallpaper as well, so they all had to coordinate. We really tried to pull out that rose color to tie in both rooms. Also, she wanted a fun look for the twin bedroom and a more mature look for the queen room and trying to find that balance was an enjoyable challenge.

From this project, what was your favorite element? I loved getting to play with the bold colors and that she gives me the freedom to put many patterns within one room. I like being able to push a lot of those elements into one area and the twin bedroom really allowed me to do that. It was a lot of fun and we were able to do all of the fabric work in those spaces.

Why was it important to have had an interior designer work on this house? Just being able to pull off everything that she wanted and to make that vision happen for her was hard and my years of experience and education helped. It’s a challenge to take what you have and transform it into what you want to have. An interior designer can come in and see that same vision and make it much easier and less stressful for the homeowner. Hallway Harmony Daniel Island homeowners, Vickie and Dr. Troy Hall, embarked on a mission to build their dream home and chose Backyard Retreats to help bring their outdoor living plans to fruition.

riginally hailing from Ohio, Dr. Troy and Vickie Hall knew that the time was near to start planning for their future beyond the bitter winters and humid summers of Columbus’s climate. Fortunately, their research and an ideal job opportunity brought them to South Carolina, where they initially settled in North Charleston. Even more fortuitous was that their grown children were able to move to Charleston as well. Once they arrived in the Lowcountry, the Halls put plans in motion

to build a custom home on Daniel Island, and selected Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes for the task. But when it came time to design their outdoor living space, they reached out to Sharon Campbell at Backyard Retreats for assistance. “Sharon came so highly recommended,” explains Dr. Troy, “And as soon as we met with her, it was clear why. She didn’t tell us what we needed or show us products that everyone else had. She asked us how we would use the space and then worked with us from that starting point.”

After a few conversations to paint a picture of the Halls’ vision—they sought a vibe that tied in with their beach-cottage-meets-farmhouse goal—Sharon had both Troy and Vickie visit the showroom for a hands-on demonstration of the quality of furniture Backyard Retreats provides. “Comfort was very important to Troy and Vickie, so I had them sit in each different style of chair so that they could decide for themselves which one they liked best,” Sharon describes. “I always say, too, that where there’s comfort, family and friends will gather.” Once the Halls

landed on the powder coated aluminum chairs with weatherproof polyethylene weave wicker, it was time to select the fabrics and accent colors that would create a cohesive outdoor-to-indoor living space. Sharon and the Halls worked closely together to determine how to best tie in the other furniture around the

fire pit and the table and chairs under the pergola. “I like to call Sharon an ‘exterior designer,’ because she does so much of what interior designers do,” Dr. Troy adds. “She asked all of the right questions again when we told her we were planning on installing the pergola over the dining space.” Because the fire pit and dining furniture would be slight-

ly more exposed to the elements, Sharon suggested the recycled polymer chairs and table. She and Vickie chose the accent pillows and stools to add pops of color, which coordinate with the overall color scheme. Vickie and Dr. Troy agree that they often spend time relaxing outside in the chairs that they chose. “I love CH+D • Spring 2018

that they rock and swivel, and they’re so comfortable; I fall asleep in them pretty often,” says Vickie with a chuckle. “We are so thankful we met Sharon and she was able to help design the best use of our space,” adds Dr. Troy. It’s All Personal With a hope of establishing a home that focuses on easy-going, family fun, these Kiawah homeowners enlisted the help of several local experts, including Vitoria International, to help them achieve their goal.

uilding a house that is over 6,000 square feet is no tiny task, but when the right team comes together and the parties involved bring in personal attention to detail, the daunting job becomes a whole lot easier. With the help of Vitoria International, R.M. Buck Builders, and interior

designer Margaret Donaldson, this family-focused home came to be. Throughout the house, a slightlyoversized design style was applied to the features of the rooms to help the spaces feel even larger and inviting in order to accommodate as many family members as possible and still make everybody feel cozy.

One standout feature of the main living floor is the kitchen. The extensive stonework on the island and the perimeter surfaces were specifically chosen early in the planning process. “Margaret brings her clients in to our showroom to make stone selections before planning the details of the rest of the room,” explains Adriene Araujo,

who is the co-owner of Vitoria International along with her husband, Fabio. “Natural stone slabs only come the way they come with certain colors and specific veining; you can’t change the way it looks like you can when picking something like a paint color,” Adriene adds with a laugh. In order to meet the look and durability requirements that these homeowners had in mind, a leathered “Taj Mahal” quartzite was selected. This golden hued countertop sur-

face should be ideal for many years of large family gatherings because it is incredibly low maintenance and is “just about as hard as hard gets,” reveals Adriene. “We try to educate all of our clients on the benefits and possible issues with any natural stone,” remarks Adriene. This is done in an effort to ensure homeowners and families are investing in the proper products, which is important to her.

With Margaret’s designer input and the stone advice from the employees at Vitoria International, the homeowners selected honed marbles for the bathrooms and laundry room. The honed finish will help to conceal possible etching due to natural wear and tear. Since bathroom surfaces don’t typically receive the same levels of use as a kitchen might, a variety of marbles were chosen for the various rooms in this home in order to have a little CH+D • Spring 2018

To help retain the property’s tip-top shape, the builder’s property maintenance department checks on the home and keeps everything in proper order—all the way down to keeping the tops of trees trimmed to maintain the lovely ocean view. Contractor Ryan Buck couldn’t let go of how close this home was to the beach and how nice a beach view would be even though the property isn’t oceanfront. “We brought in an expert arborist and the Architectural Review Board and we were able to carve out a pretty great ocean view, which was very exciting for the whole team,” he explained. Since Ryan too is part of a family owned business, paying attention to the factors that will make

The outside design continued beyond tree trimming. A extensive boardwalk leads directly to the ocean front and a pool with an infinity edge feature makes the outdoor space something to behold. Adriene lead the homeowners towards a leathered “Avalanche” stone for the outdoor kitchen area. This particular product will be suitable for the weather and has an oyster shell look to it that blends in well with the beachy, Kiawah vibe of this outdoor living space. This is just another area designed to be family-friendly, beautiful, and low-maintenance. v

“Forever Home” Focus Designing dual homes on one property with an emphasis on longevity was no easy task, but the fine folks at Charleston Cabinets helped to bring this Mt. Pleasant home to life.

enuine, unrestrained tears of joy has to be one of the best human emotional acts; whether the accompanying smile shining through is your own or you are just a witness, it is a wonderful experience. Tears of joy came when Mt. Pleasant homeowner Barbara Klaris began talking about bringing

the dream of living with her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Swegle, in a custom-created “forever home” into a reality. While the idea of relocating to a central location and building a home that would allow both the mother and the daughter to live together, yet still live

separately when need be, has been mulled over for years, the notion recently came to fruition in fall of last year. One company who helped comb through the years of accumulated house ideas was Charleston Cabinets. Since both ladies are avid bakers, having high-functioning kitchens with ample storage was on the

From the start, Jennifer and John wanted to build a custom home that they could enjoy for many, many years to come and one in which Barbara could spend much of the year in Charleston living with them, but still provide everyone space when needed. “When we set out to create this home, we wanted to be able to do dinners and

enjoy life together, but still keep that option to separate when we needed to separate,” explains Jennifer. Rick Mitchell, owner of Mt. Pleasant Builders, met with Jennifer and Barbara at the beginning of the process to carve out a basic plan of action for this style of dwelling that is unique to this area. “I met Jennifer and Barbara and we designed this home to be two living spaces: a main house and a mother-in-law suite. We spent almost four months

drawing house plans for it,” adds Rick. The design process didn’t just end with Rick helping the Swegles and Barbara; Niki Komorek, Design Consultant for Charleston Cabinets, worked diligently with the homeowners as well as Rick, Architect Mark Camens of Camens Architectural Group, and Interior Designer Paula Muscarella of Sapphire Pear. “What we started doing was taking the architectural plans CH+D • Spring 2018

and changing them around,” includes Niki. “For example, we moved around some walls and in the kitchen and had a peninsula that we changed into an island, actually it was two islands at one point. People wonder what the design aspect is of what we do and it is just that: we can take the plans for your kitchen that you have and redesign them and reconfigure layouts to make aspects work even better.” The kitchen in the main house isn’t the only space that received the Charleston Cabinet’s design touch; the main house’s master bathroom went through five different configurations until this design was settled upon that maximizes functionality and appearance. In Barbara’s mother-in-law suite, she

was able to work with Niki to carefully plan out her new kitchen, which is smaller than what she’s used to, in a fashion that would allow her to bake and cook all that she wants to and allow her to age well there. After spending years with her late husband, who was wheelchair bound, Barbara received a new perspective on how homes could, and in some cases need to be, configured to accommodate people of a variety of physical states. Clean & Green Finding the right builder took some time for these homeowners, but once they found Insulsteel of South Carolina, LLC, they knew that the end result was going to be worth the effort.

ocation, location, location is what everybody preaches when it comes to real estate and finding a new home. For these homeowners, that part was easy; once they found a few bucolic acres with views of horses grazing, they knew that they had stumbled upon the perfect place to build a dream home.

Following that idyllic first step, a series of challenges came their way. Luckily for them, they came upon Insulsteel of South Carolina, LLC at a home show and everything began to fall into place. After only a few minutes of chatting with Tina Bostic, co-owner of Insul-

steel, this couple came to the realization that this was the builder for them. Instead of just working with one contractor or a project manager as a main point of contact, they desired a team to collaborate with while planning and creating their new house. For the dwelling itself, their top priorities were energy

During that initial meeting with Tina, she helped to explain all about the EcoShell building enclosure system and how all of the products installed in one of the Insulsteel homes aim to be as energy efficient and health conscious as possible. “First and foremost, we have an extremely energy efficient building envelope; that starts with our Insulsteel panels that pick up from the founda-

tion to the exterior walls up to the roof,” explains Steve Bostic, co-owner of Insulsteel. “The thing that really makes us work on a health-conscious level is that we have cut down on all of the airborne bacteria and airborne particulates that are in the air.” The air system, which is also highly energy efficient, works diligently to provide residents with high-quality, comfortable, healthy air. The first portion of the two-part sys-

tem is the ventilation. Every hour, on the hour, all new air circulates throughout the home. With the use of the Energy Recovery Ventilator, the new air flows in cleanly. Thanks to the Unicoi Series HVAC system, the air goes through a UV light chamber and a central filtration system to completely cleanse what passes through it. Fashionably Furnished One Summerville couple was so inspired by the table they purchased at Steven Shell Living that they returned multiple times to fill their home with the stylishly customizable furnishings.

ombining two households and bringing together two families tends to be a bit of a challenge—often one house just isn’t big enough to hold two sets of furniture in each room. Elise Martin and her fiancé, Mike Milbrandt, decided that they would need to not only pare down their combined furniture into one household, but they would need to envision the future home they are building. That meant upgrading their style.

But updating nearly all of a home’s furniture can be overwhelming for most homeowners—Elise and Mike were no exception. “We had a hard time deciding what to keep and what to donate and then we had a disappointing experience with a designer. Prime Pest Protection A certain James Island couple purchased their marshfront home and promptly met with Mosquito Shield to solve their impending pest problem.

he Lowcountry is a notorious hotbed for a variety of pests. Most common among those nuisances are mosquitoes, but they certainly are not the only ones. “No See-ums,” gnats, and other flying menaces also make their mark on how much a homeowner enjoys spending time in his or her backyard. When this family moved into their house on James Island, they knew that the marsh beyond their parcel of land would present a challenge.

One of the first things the homeowners did was check out the companies around Charleston who offer to help keep the mosquitoes at bay. Once they discovered Mosquito Shield at the Charleston Home + Design Show and learned of the company’s particular method, they were sold. Kevin Jones of Mosquito Shield explains, “We use a proprietary blend that is 99.9 percent organic and comprised of mostly a garlic oil base. It also contains cedar oil, peppermint oil, as well as a small bit of a control product that is very low in toxicity. This

helps kill the adult mosquito, but the rest of the blend mainly repels them.” It wasn’t just the organic or low-toxicity factors that convinced the James Island homeowners to choose Mosquito Shield for their yard’s treatment. It was essential to avoid an intricate mechanical system that could break or that might be difficult to use. “There is no equipment to buy and there’s nothing to maintain on the part of the homeowner,” shares Kevin. “We come out and inspect the area, looking for cool or damp areas that these insects pre-

fer, and then we spray our treatment accordingly—more in trouble spots, if necessary.” The low maintenance aspect is perfect for this particular yard, too, since there are a vast number of trees on the property, which mosquitoes prefer. Now that Kevin and his team visit the property on a bi-weekly basis,

these marshfront homeowners and their family can enjoy their views and new pool in peace, knowing that Mosquito Shield has made sure every inch of their yard is protected. v

COVERING THE WORK OF PBS’S THIS OLD HOUSE IN CHARLESTON & THEIR GENERATION NEXT INITIATIVE

The team with This Old House has come to Charleston for the first time after 39 seasons on air and opted to do so in fashion with not one, but two Lowcountry homes. Kevin O’Connor, Tom Silva, and Richard Trethewey worked with many local tradespeople, as well as several students from the American College of Building Arts, to help complete the homes and promote the Generation NEXT program. s a young kid, I remember being so angry every time This Old House came on because I had to either be completely quiet or leave the room altogether so that my parents could hear the show. One day my dad suggested that I should actually give the show a shot and try watching it instead of playing elsewhere. While I don’t think I quite got the same experience from the show as my parents did, I did enjoy watching what the cast was doing and seeing the final products come to life. Tom Silva and Richard Trethewey eventually became “Danny Tanner” or “Sam Malone” TV character favorites for me. Getting to meet these men that I feel like I’ve known my entire life has definitely been a huge thrill and privilege. Safe to say, my parents were pretty excited as well! This Old House, now in its 39th season, has been a staple for many households across the country for decades. As the years have gone on, a sea of home-improvement style shows has developed and yet this one still stands out from the pack. For this program, the home gets to be the main character and purely fixing the problems at hand and showing viewers how it is done drive the plot. Perhaps it is this formula with the charming, down-to-earth cast members that has yielded seasons of success. Myself along with other members of the Charleston Home + Design team had the honor of getting to witness and document much of the local chapter of this show’s legacy at a project on Hasell Street.

hroughout the years, one thing has remained the same about PBS’s This Old House: who the main character is—the house. Though the “actor” might’ve changed, the fact that the home under renovation is the star has not wavered. Hosts, technicians, cities, and more have come and gone, but the lightning-in-a-bottle that is this program has maintained a clear focus on the house. Perhaps that emphasis is what has helped the show keep its successful magic going for all of these seasons. The newest homes to join the This Old House cast, from right here in Charleston, are following the same path to stardom to help continue the legacy. “We had Charleston on our list to come to for a long time and the Ha-

sell Street house gives us the ability to tell stories that we can’t tell where we are,” says Kevin O’Connor, host of This Old House. The selected traditional Charleston single, nestled into the heart of the peninsula on Hasell Street, became the show’s newest star last year. This house, while continuously occupied, had received little to no maintenance attention in over 60 years. The natural wear and tear from the previous owners coupled with the organic aging process that a home built in 1840 is expected to undergo left this entire site in desperate need of renovation to ensure safe residency for the new owners as well as the inclusion of modern conveniences—like central heating and air. All of the unique Charleston architectural features and the many levels of repair needed left this home open for

many stories to be told. Thankfully, after Hasell Street homeowners Kathleen and Scott Edwards decided to invest in this historical property, they began the process of applying to have their adventure chronicled via PBS. “My husband has watched This Old House for over 30 years, honestly probably since its inception, and when we heard they were looking for houses, obviously we were interested,” adds Kathleen. Since then, many people over the course of the past year have come together to help bring this home back to life and to make it something that the entire Edwards family, and hopefully future generations, can enjoy. This isn’t the first downtown Charleston home renovation the couple has tackled. They opted to do this most

Joining This Old House: For me, this whole thing was happenstance. My wife and I bought our first house and it was a sort of rundown, two-family home, which is what we wanted because we wanted to work on it and fix it up ourselves. I was a longtime fan of the show and we turned to the place that I had always gone to before for advice, which was This Old House, and we wrote a letter to the magazine. Unbeknownst to us, they were producing the first season of Ask This Old House and my letter led them to come to my house. We did it and completely out of the blue a month or two later, they called me back and asked if I wanted to host both shows.

Learning Your Trade: I’m not a builder or a pro, but I’m the guy on the show that basically asks the questions of the pros. It’s the host’s job to sort of elicit information out of the pros.

Favorite This Old House Project: I have an emotional attachment to our 25th anniversary project, which was in Carlisle, Massachusetts. It was a seasonlong renovation for us and we owned the house instead of working for a homeowner and this sort of unleashed Tommy to let us do whatever we wanted to this house.

recent one after realizing they wanted to live downtown fulltime and needed a place large enough to accommodate their family. “We bought this house as a ‘for sale by owner’ property in ‘as is’ condition that was being sold by the estate of the two gentlemen that had lived here previously,” explains Kathleen. “Our real estate agent connected us with the property and we liked this house because it had room for a pool, our family, and it was centrally located. To be honest, when we first looked at the house, it was a little bit scary. When we brought my parents by for the first time, they asked if it was a joke,” she adds with a chuckle. “You kind of had

to be a visual person to really imagine what the space could be. Thankfully, my husband really is visionary in that aspect and had a lot of hope for what this property could become for us.” “I think the big thing with the house was that the gentlemen that lived in it for years never did a thing [for maintenance],” says Tom Silva, General Contractor for This Old House, during one of our many interviews throughout this process. “Like with a lot of people when you live in a house, as things start to deteriorate, they deteriorate so slowly that you don’t pick up the fact that a floor is starting to sag or a

wall is starting to crack. It’s all of a sudden that crack is right there, but really it’s been happening for ten years then all of a sudden you see it, and it’s like ‘whoa, when did that happen?’” Tom is one of the show’s cast members that has been with the program since 1986. When the other Charleston Home+Design magazine team members and I first had the opportunity to tour the property, it was clear, even to our non-expert eyes that this project was going to require extensive work. Even with all of the repairs and renovations necessary for this property, all the way from structural to purely cos-

Joining This Old House: In the very beginning I was asked to do the show and I turned it down. About five, six, or maybe even seven years into the series, I said I’d give in a shot, and over 30 years later, I’m still here. It’s fun and rewarding. It is doing something that I love and it doesn’t get any better than that.

Learning Your Trade: I grew up in an old house and that’s where I learned my trade as a very young kid. I’ve never wanted to do anything else and I still don’t. It is very rewarding and there aren’t a lot of jobs where you can drive by 20 years

/ This Old House later and say, ‘I built that house,’ or ‘I put that roof on,’ and I like that about what I do.

Musings About Your Profession: Whether it is this Charleston house, or any of these old houses, I like it when there are districts that have rules that you have to abide by because we are actually caretakers of these old homes. We are trying to rebuild them, save them, and repair them for the next generation and to do it right is really smart. You have to do it right to the detail and it is the things that you don’t think about that make these homes special.

metic, the situation was better than it appeared. “We didn’t have to rip it down or even close to it, which was good and we’ve done it in the past. We are much closer to that with the Bogard Street project than we are with the Hasell Street project and that in and of itself says something, right?” adds Kevin, comparing the Hasell Street house to the other project that This Old House is working on this season. “You’ve got a brick house that clearly needs a lot of work and updating, but those houses, they kind of withstand a lot more

neglect than the wood frame houses; that’s not to say that they are superior, but when you kind of let something go, water and moisture is always the biggest problem and brick will simply do better when it comes to water and moisture than the wood frame ones.” One historical reason behind this sturdy brick is likely rooted in one of the tragedies of the city’s history. This home, built in 1840, came two years after the devastating fire of 1838, which destroyed many wood-framed homes.

Long before the first demolition day started on this pre-Civil War home, a lot of planning, sourcing, and organizing had to fall into place. Early in the process, homeowners Scott and Kathleen A202 enlisted longtime friend and architect Bill Huey, of Bill Huey + Associates. Not only did their relationship with him make him an easy choice, but it was also his reputation and experience with working on historic homes in the Charleston area that helped put him as the only person on their list. “Having worked with single house layouts for 30 years has helped immensely as I’ve been challenged to create functional spaces and flow many times over,” says Bill. “Modernizing the functional spaces for the Edwards family presented a few challenges, especially locating the kitchen, baths, and mechanical systems.” SHEET:

the former kitchen house. The space is very narrow because of our client's desire (thankfully) to retain the large brick fireplaces in the room. I designed a curved, narrow table that will allow staggered seating in the space. The wood to make this table was sinker cypress from the Edisto River. Kevin O'Connor got to go along and film the submerged log being raised from the river with our talented wood craftsman, Justin Herrington at Born Again Heartwoods. Justin excitedly told me that the curved grain at the base of the log will perfectly match the curve of the table.

Mark brought another participant into this process: the American College of Building Arts (ACBA). “Charleston was on our short list of places that we really wanted to go to for years and the fact that we are getting to cover Charleston in the season that we were launching Generation NEXT was great. With the city’s obvious connection is to ACBA, and the fact that it is the only school with a four year degree [with the Applied Science aspect], and that the school would be in our backyard of the project sort of almost made all of this a must,” explains Kevin. Generation NEXT supports the mikeroweWORKS Foundation and the aim is to encourage younger folks to enter and master the vocational trades. In the winter of 1979, we got a phone call that changed my family’s life, and certainly my life. I remember saying, “hold on a minute,” and then “Dad, there is some crazy woman that wants us to work for nothing.” He then got on the phone and said that it sounded great in hopes that it would maybe help change the heating guy or the plumbing guy’s image. Now, 39 years later, I’ve been all over the world and it has been great. You just never know where the path will take you.

Once it came time for the Edwards family to pick their local general contractor, Bill offered up a suggestion: Mark Regalbuto of Renew Urban Charleston. “When This Old House asked them and they didn’t have a general contractor yet and they asked for a recommendation, Bill Huey said this ‘rabble rouser named Mark might work’ and production said they had heard of me,” explains Mark. “I met with the Edwards family and showed them a few of my projects. I ended up being a good fit; I really like them and our styles, and even styles of working, are very similar, so they decided to hire me.”

Getting the process of renovating the home underway to bring the Edwards family one step closer to moving in began much like any other remodeling project would, except this one just had a film crew along for the ride. “There are a few things that you kind of have to plan a little bit for and schedule in maybe a little bit more time, but not really,” explains Mark when asked if the filming impacted his or his crew’s normal work routine. “The days of shooting would take more time, but it was very reasonable. They are legitimate and straightforward. They want to capture the real thing and don’t want to fake anything.”

/ Renew Urban Charleston Favorite Feature of the Hasell Street Home: I love the scale of the house. The rooms feel good and aren’t overly grand. You can have the house feel very comfortable and livable. Also, I love the brick. All of it is this handmade, queen-size brick with a deep, rich brown and is quite lovely. The way in which we exposed all of the interior brick is a showcase, too, of part of what Renew Urban Charleston does. We saved all of the casing and then, kind of, built that casing back to the brick, not to mention all of the gentle scribing we had to do to it.

What is ACBA? The American College of Building Arts (ACBA) is a one-of-a-kind college in America that blends a traditional liberal arts education with applied sciences topics. Stone carving, timber framing, architectural carpentry, traditional ironwork, plaster, and traditional masonry are routes to take to earn a Bachelor in Science degree. With a ratio of students to teachers at six to 1, students can expect to receive a lot of quality face time with professors and ample hands on experiences in the fields of their choice. This college that sits in a restored building in Charleston has several active workshops and numerous modern classrooms to allow students to have a well-rounded and unique higher educational experience.

How long have you been with ACBA and how did you become involved? I've been teaching at ACBA since August 2017. I was winding down my business and sliding into retirement after 47 years of running my own artistic forging shop based in Indiana when I heard about the opening here. I wanted to do more teaching and this looked like the best possible place to become deeply involved with a committed group of blacksmithing students.

What was it like working with the This Old House and what role did you play in the project? I am technically the leader of the team of seniors who are building the gates for This Old House, but the whole depart-

parts throughout this process and how they all work together. From the blueprints to the framework to call sheets, very little was left to chance. Since the homeowners, Mark, and Bill had put together such a dynamic and interesting home concept, a lot of coordination and forethought was required. One such finishing choice for this project that makes a large visual impact, but

ment is involved. Richard Guthrie, who teaches with me, has brought his experience with southeastern traditional ironwork to the project and the seniors he has had a huge hand in teaching are carrying most of the weight of the job.

Why is ACBA so important? Not that many years ago, these kind of skills were nearly dead in Charleston. Now, a new generation of knowledgeable blacksmiths are graduating and taking their part in the growing profession of contemporary blacksmithing. There is no comparable program in the country where students can immerse themselves in training in these traditional skills and get a bachelors degree at the same time. Each student here begins with a focused practice in the time-honored skills of drawing and goes on to learn computer-aided design (CAD).

How long have you been with ACBA and how did you become involved with the school? I've known about the school since taking a tour of the Old District Jail (our previous location) about twelve years ago, and knew I wanted to be a part of ACBA in the future. I've been teaching at ACBA for three years; first as an adjunct hired to teach the historic preservation sequence for the sophomores, and then offered a full professor position. I now teach architectural history, preservation, and senior capstone class.

For me, it was a personal dream come true, having been a fan of the show for thirty years. My role was mostly logistics, before and during the filming season. TOH reached out to us and I was happy to help ACBA be involved in ways that were educational for the students and fit their (and the clients') needs for the Hasell Street house.

We’re filling a void in the American education system by providing our students with a hands-on education in traditional trades, which are vital for preserving historic buildings and building long lasting new ones, but are at risk of becoming lost arts, in conjunction with the liberal arts background.

I became involved for different reasons. The training I went through called the Compagnon du Devoir is based on the older people teaching the younger people, which has an international department and a job placement department where companies can send job offers for our members. I saw a job opening for a professor of timber framing here at ACBA, to not just teach. I applied and moved here in early August of 2005 and was part of the founding faculty of ACBA.

What was it like working with the This Old House team and what role did you play in the project?

First of all, working with the This Old House team was a lot of fun; what a great group of people to be filming with. My role in the project comes through my company Timber Artisans, LLC. Mark Regalbuto, with Renew Urban Charleston, is one of the contractors we work a lot with and he asked me if we could build a pergola for his project on Hasell Street.

Why is ACBA so important? First of all there is no place like this in this country where you can get such an intense education, not just in the chosen trade, but also in general education as well. I also believe that ACBA is important because it validates the skills you need to be a true artisan. It puts us at the same level as other graduates, with the advantage of having almost all of our graduates find jobs in their field right when they get out. CH+D • Spring 2018

Kevin adds, “That one homeowner decision takes you way down this road because now you have to figure out where does the electrical, HVAC, and plumbing go? How do you hide that stuff when you were planning on putting them behind the walls?” The day I got to meet Richard was the day that the construction team was tackling the large, both metaphorically and physically, problem of the home’s modern HVAC system. “I looked at this house and said, ‘What are we going to do? They have taken out every single soffit and wall and we are in this high, high humidity place.’” Via years of his expert knowledge, an efficient plan was put together and the proper products were purchased and seamlessly installed in order to honor and retain the home’s historical look and still make the home comfortable for the Edwards family and their guests year-round. This show will dive into how all of this came together when it airs in Charleston on March 29th. From historical plastering practices, creating faux beams to hide plumbing, and

Shark Tank: Architect + Interior Designer Edition This past January, as part of the Charleston Home + Design Show weekend, the semiannual Architect’s Symposium took place with a fresh twist on a staple event: Shark Tank: Architect + Interior Designer Edition. This year, the addition of interior designers to the event helped to bring a more diverse range of vendors to this portion of the symposium. The special bunch of vendors had a chance to speak with the group of successful local architects and interior designers about their business’s particular product or service in an informal and intimate environment. Throughout Shark Tank: Architect + Interior Designer Edition, participants had the chance to take notes on their own information sheets about each of the vendors to help them retain the valuable information being disclosed. Thanks to the generous donations from the vendors, prizes were awarded to all Shark Tank participants at the conclusion of the day.

41st Annual Charleston Symphony Orchestra League’s Designer Showhouse Visit the 41st Annual 2018 Charleston Symphony Orchestra League’s Designer Showhouse taking place now through April 15th. This 1870 home located at 142 Tradd Street is in one of the most desired neighborhoods in Charleston and features the work of 11 talented designers who have each created a different space in this lovely house. Aside from being able to take in all of the beauty that radiates from this threestory, English-style townhouse, you’ll be able to enjoy lunchtime food in their café or shop in their exclusive boutique. While you are browsing the home, you’ll be able to learn about about the professionals that worked on the property and even have the chance to purchase some items from the decorated rooms. This Old House Wrap Party

The current store, as seen here, is about to be expanded greatly.

All-New Showroom Steven Shell Living is expanding its showroom to more than double the present size. The current store will be renovated to match the new space with updated flooring, lighting, and paint. The company will also be adding a veranda featuring outdoor furniture options and greenery. Homeowners can expect to see several new vendors as well. Additionally, Steven Shell Living will be adding a vignette space in the front window of the showroom. A different designer will be given the opportunity to decorate the area each month. The company expects renovations to be completed in Spring 2018. In the meantime, you can check out their current showroom at 642 Coleman Blvd in Mt. Pleasant, which will remain open through the expansion. On the final day of filming this past March, a few of the Charleston Home+Design team members had the privilege of attending and contributing to the This Old House wrap party that took place at the Hasell Street residence. At this event, the show's cast, crew, and sponsor representatives celebrated with the homeowners, the local tradespeople that worked on the home, as well as a few lucky members of the general public. This night commemorated the completion of the first home that This Old House has worked on in Charleston during its 39 seasons on air. While this project might be done, the second Charleston property that the program is working on still has a bit more to undergo. Budget Blinds Gets Sister Company

Tailored Living, a sister company of Budget Blinds, has recently opened in the Lowcountry. The company primarily operates on a mobile model, but will be opening a showroom in the next month inside of the Budget Blinds showroom located at 2447 N Hwy 17 in Mt. Pleasant. They offer organization systems for closets, pantries, kitchens, and garages and sell Murphy beds and epoxy floor finishes. Polly Epstein, of Tailored Living, describes the company as a “onestop package” for meeting design needs on a budget. Because the company is so mobile, Tailored Living team members can come to a home, take measurements, and start designing right on the spot using a 3D CAD program. The mobile model allows the team to provide clients with a personalized experience and makes the design process “a collaborative effort.” Designers can even provide immediate price estimates. This sample closet from Tailored Living is an example of what this company can create in a client’s home.

MAXTRIX Kids Rooms Partners with Museum When two children-focused organizations join forces, it's nearly guaranteed that they will come up with something spectacular. That's exactly what MAXTRIX Kids Rooms, a local children's furniture manufacturer, and the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry have done in their partnership for their Hideaways exhibit. This hands-on experience for kids is a place where they can let their imaginations run wild and build whole new worlds with the simple tools of blankets, pillows, and other whimsical items found at home. The interactive display is centered around two MAXTRIX corner loft beds that include slides, tents, and towers, all of which can be customized for a play area at home, as well. The Children's Museum opened the display on February 10th, and it will be available for exploration through August 2018.
