has moved to Nashville to be geographically closer to her dad; and graphic designer Kaylen Saxon has relocated to Boston, following a great job opportunity offered to her fiancée. Though their talents and ever-present joy will be missed in our little office, we’re pleased to announce a few new faces representing the CH+D family—Margaret Rambo (Graphic Designer) and Erin Forbes (Assistant Editor). In addition, we’re branching out to bring on a Director of Social Media Marketing, Meredith Poston.

’ve always loved the fall, mainly because I’m a huge school nerd. The end of August always brought a fresh set of classes and an afternoon perusing the pen-andnotebook aisle at Target. The autumn signifies a start of something new, and although my school days are over, this season at Charleston Home + Design proves to be no different.
We’re eager to present this issue to you as a first for some on our team and a last for others. The handsome face gracing our cover is that of Curtis Bostic, a budding politician, a fierce lawyer, an avid adventurer, a devout Christian, and a whole-hearted family man. Take a look at “Liberty and Justice for All” to catch a glimpse of Bostic’s Ravenel life. Lowcountry in early 2013. We had an unguarded, in-depth conversation, the type that an election time cannot afford, in his modest home office filled with his wife and five children (who, I might add, were all there of their own volition to listen to their dad tell the story of his life). We talked not so much of his run, which had already been covered by the news outlets, but more about what they didn’t cover—his
Carolina’s vote last year, but I think he’s already been elected as the best representation for his suffering fellow Christians. Now knowing the man behind the political signs, I believe he’d prefer it no other way.

He Said: I prefer structural insulated panels. So many inefficiencies begin with a stick-built frame. It’s counterproductive to add green features to an already-inefficient building. By comparison, a home built with structural insulated panels delivers a completely air-tight structure that boasts dramatically increased energy savings and healthier indoor air quality.
She Said: I prefer solar panels because they create so much value for a homeowner. They can reduce a homeowner’s power bill by 70 to 100 percent every single month for the life of the home. Additionally, solar panels increase real estate values and qualify the home for state and federal tax credits.
He Said: HVAC systems, while not an aesthetic upgrade, are one of the most important investments. Water-cooled air handling equipment causes zero ozone depletion, reduces allergens, and kills biological contaminants. Homes with traditional HVAC systems normally produce air that has ten times more pollutants than outdoor air. He Said: I’m all for open floor plans, especially in common areas. People traditionally gather in a kitchen, so why not allow that space to freely open into the dining and living areas of a home for maximum enjoyment? Owning a home built with structural insulated panels eliminates the need for interior weight-bearing walls, which maximizes the availability of its usable square footage.
Preferred green-building product?
Where would you splurge?
She Said: The kitchen is the heart of the home, and these days, there are so many unique and beautiful ways to decorate one. I suggest splurging on finishes, such as recycled countertops with low-water absorption and porosity (which means they are low-maintenance and sustainable).
Open floor plans or cozy spaces?
She Said: My vote is for cozy spaces—with the caveat that successful cozy spaces should be carefully designed for each individual living area. A whole home can be designed as one cozy space, too. As pocket neighborhoods and microhomes become more prevalent in urban areas, consumers have become more focused on living smart instead of living large.

Cynthia Zimmerman of Zimmerman Interiors Specializing in traditional and coastal interior design, Cynthia Zimmerman has developed quite a career here in the Lowcountry. After graduating from the College of Notre Dame with a management degree, she then recieved a second degree in interior design from Hood College. The pull to move south was strong, though, and she moved here to start her Charleston career in 1999. As an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers for over 20 years, she is always on top of the constantly changing trends to help her clients achieve their design goals. Cynthia has showcased her talents in her own home using bold contrasting colors

The large sketch above the bed is an original that Cindy had commissioned for that specific location. It complements the custom bedding fabricated to fit the unique dimensions of her European-style bed. Mirrored surfaces add sparkle and glamour, while the dark gray walls and tray ceiling provide a restful ambiance.

Vintage finds—like the mid-sixties cherry television console and club chairs in their original chevron fabric—add beauty and interest in this den space. In order to blend the 1980s sectional with the retro pieces, Cindy recovered the sofa in a modern, neutral chenille fabric and adorned the cozy space with custom pillows.

Cindy again borrowed from a different decade (this time the 1940s) when accenting the dining room with goldleaf frames and lamps. The Palladian window architecture is enhanced with extra-length stationery drapery and walnut wood rods. THE CRAFT:
Jay and his team manufacture one-of-a-kind cabinetry right here in Charleston. From kitchen and bathroom design to complete installation, they do it all.
THE BACKSTORY:
Jay began in the woodworking industry by building small items using hand-carpentry tools. Over the years, he has expanded and perfected his craft by purchasing state-of-theart equipment that ensures precision in the construction of each cabinet door and box. He’s learned a few tricks along the way to keep his crew safe (such as effective dust-management systems and touch-sensitive saw blades) and to reduce costs, which allows him to offer a locally made custom product at a competitive price.
THE PROCESS:
Once Jay (or Randon) and his customers— often accompanied by an architect or interior designer—decide upon a footprint and design, Jay enters the exact dimensions into a computer system connected to a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) router. The machine cuts the wood—sturdy American-made pre-finished plywood for the boxes and a variety of quality species for the doors—completely accurately. The CNC router stamps a number on each panel, indicating where it should be placed in the overall layout of the kitchen or bathroom so that two similar-looking pieces are not inadvertently confused. One of Jay’s employees then moves the wood through an edge-banding machine that places a finished material on the exposed ends of the plywood. The cabinet doors and boxes are sent to the painting station where they are sprayed with numerous layers of paint or stain and hung to dry. Once the pieces are no longer wet to the touch, hardware (like hinges and tracks) is added to the cabinets, drawers, and box panels. At the end of the process, the crew loads the pieces onto the HWC truck and drives them to the appropriate home for installation.

Scipio begins his inspection in the kitchen—the hub of German-cockroach activity. German cockroaches, unlike Palmetto bugs, are attracted to tight spots with a water and heat source (like the refrigerator). Scipio pulls out all of the appliances, looks for sputum (roach feces that look like pepper), and applies a gel bait, which resembles a dollop of peanut butter. The gel bait packs the punch to kill an entire nest through direct and indirect exposure. So often, homes become infested, not necessarily because of uncleanliness, but because homeowners often accidentally bring cockroaches into their homes via grocery bags. An infestation can happen to anyone in any house.

In another neighborhood, at a house where the homeowner is complaining of excessive mice and mosquitoes, Scipio takes a moment to educate the client about which steps he should take after the treatment to prevent further invasion. The expert suggests keeping lawns trimmed (to eliminate a potential hiding place for rodents) and draining standing water (to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds). Then, Scipio applies a chemical treatment to the yard and installs bait boxes along the fence line to trap the mice.

Near the conclusion of his day, Scipio returns to his office to complete some documentation paperwork. It is important to Lane’s that homeowners know where problems were identified and what was done to treat those problems. Finally, Scipio follows up with technicians that report to him to verify that the day’s appointments went as expected.

What is your background in the building industry? I’ve always loved—even in high school—building and architecture. When the schools give that test to see what your abilities are, I tested at a very high level in spatial ability; I know how things work and fit together. I went through school and eventually earned degrees in business and art, which helps to give my designs a certain uniqueness. I understand scale, proportion, color, and the idea of everything fitting together to create a pleasing feeling.
The building community is often seen as a boy’s club. Do you think that it has been difficult for you to find your niche? It is full of male figures, but I feel like I am simply what I am. I’ve found my place in the industry by doing my job well. I pay attention to the details, and I really listen to what the customer wants. The focus is always upon the ultimate end—building a home that is comfortable and structurally sound. These are the qualities that have led to my success.
What are this home’s best features? It’s really a unique house all around. The bulk of the design was created by the customers, and my team and I really focused on bringing their ideas to life. The homeowners came to me with a graph-paper drawing, and we developed the whole home based on their original sketch. The house is very water oriented; the kitchen, living room, dining room, and double-stacked porches all overlook the neighboring river. We incorporated multiple storage areas throughout the house, particularly in the laundry room and office, so that the couple could stay organized. My team and I created everything the homeowners wanted, adding our expertise to hone and enhance their original plan. Company: Bill Huey + Associates Credentials: After earning his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University’s College of Architecture, Bill began his thirty-year career. Eventually, he opened his own firm and has since served as the president of Charleston CRAN (Custom Residential Architects Network).
Your firm has a very diverse portfolio, including residential, commercial, and historic projects. Which type of project is your favorite? I enjoy working on them all, but I get the most personal satisfaction from working on residential projects. The best part, to me, is the interaction with my clients—from our first discussions about their vision through the design and construction of their home. Many times, I have the opportunity to walk through a newly framed home with my clients, look through openings that will soon be windows, and stand with them, taking in the view that they will be enjoying for years to come.
What is your favorite aspect of this particular project? This home was designed on an irregularly shaped lot, overlooking a natural lagoon that is teaming with wildlife. We were able to use the shape of the lot to incorporate a viewing deck and a screened room placed at an oblique angle to the main house. The results are two spaces that embrace the vistas while still allowing for unobstructed views from the living areas of the main house.
Do homeowners need an architect to build a home of this kind? Building a home is a big deal. The design and production of construction documents for any custom residence are best facilitated by a professional architect. Custom designs must be responsive to site-specific features, stringent building codes, and construction complexities. The roles of architects, in my opinion, are to guide their clients through the entire process, to simplify the complicated, and to empower their clients to actively participate. After working with several companies in the Lowcountry, she joined GDC Home in 2003.
What was your vision for the space? My vision for this space was to create a fun, comfortable, inviting area. I used Sunbrella fabrics, teak, and indooroutdoor rugs to transform the unusual space—an unfinished garage—into an enjoyable living room.
Describe what a professional designer can bring to the table that homeowners cannot do on their own. Delivering a conceptual design to a client is crucial in building a vision of the space. As an interior designer, I did this by choosing paint colors, fabrics, and finishes that both manifested a fun, coastal feel and mimicked the clients’ personalities. After establishing a vision, we then discussed the functionality of the space. I used my skills as a designer to formulate a floor plan to allow my clients to understand the design.
Did this project have any particular challenges? Well, when I first approached the project, the garage had exposed cinder blocks, a cement floor, and some wood paneling. That empty garage needed to be become a functional space—fast. The homeowners wanted to use the garage for entertaining guest during their son’s wedding reception. I
n the early 1900s, this James Island home was an artist’s getaway accessible only by boat. Through the years, as it passed from one owner’s hands to another’s, the property eventually became a family’s compound, housing not only a set of parents but also their children and grandchildren. Recently, two Charleston locals purchased the waterfront land and its structures to be a retirement paradise. However, a renovation proved to be necessary because the existing houses were sorely outdated. The homeowners chose to convert one home into a pool house, connect another home to the main cottage, and expand with an addition. One of the most important features of the renovation to the homeowners was the flooring. They loved the look of hardwood, but wanted a material with a bit more character than typical planks provide. They chose a historic, 200-year-old Eastern White Pine, which features the original coloring, unique markings, and mismatched widths. The flooring is not simply a type of reclaimed wood floors, though. Fred Stone III, owner of Elegant Hardwood Floors and the mastermind behind this project, explains, “Many types of reclaimed-woods on the market are re-milled beams and re-milled decking. When these beams are sliced up, the wood loses its original patina. Historic wood maintains the original patina and keeps the original character and saw marks. When compared to reclaimed wood, the historic look is far superior.” The look and character, however, are not the only benefits of the unique material. Because the Eastern White Pine material is so old, it’s safe to say that it was milled from a forest that was allowed to grow slowly, meaning the trees’ wood is stronger than that which is found in today’s mass-produced, quickgrowing forests. The sturdy planks have lasted for a solid 200 years, and Fred confidently expects them to last 200 more. They stand strong against daily wear-and-tear because each new scratch—from a puppy’s anxious scrabble to reach a newcomer at the door or from sliding chairs back and forth around the dining room table— becomes the homeowners’ personal mark upon the wood’s age-old story. v

ount Pleasant homeowners Kaye and Todd Phillips have divergent styles; Kaye leans more toward traditional design, while Todd tends to gravitate towards a modern look. However, the two did agree that their kitchen had to go. It was dated and cramped—quite the predicament for a couple in the home and design industry. Kaye used to work for HGTV, and Todd designs light fixtures at his company, Quoizel. With such backgrounds, they both know that a house is a homeowner’s work of art. “We came very close to getting the standard Charleston kitchen, and then we wondered if we really wanted a cookie-cutter kitchen. We realized that the room should be more of an expression of ourselves,” says Todd.
So, the two began working to establish a vision that incorporated both senses of style. After much deliberation, they chose a modern style interwoven with coastal and rustic themes. Since cabinetry is the most predominant surface in a kitchen, it tends to really the set the tone of the space, so Kaye and Todd’s immediate challenge was to find cabinetry that would have a contemporary-but-not-too-modern vibe. Kaye describes her shopping experience saying, “As we were looking around the Lowcountry for an appropriate cabinet, we walked into the Carolina Kitchens showroom, saw these cabinets, and said, ‘Wow.’” The product that caught the couple’s attention was from a line known as Acrilux by Ultracraft, which boasts acrylic doors and CH+D • Fall 2014

wooden boxes. The beauty of Acrilux lies in its linear striations and glossy luster. “It almost looks like traditional wood that has been stained a contemporary gray,” explains Todd. With the help of kitchen designer Stewart Culler Hendrix of Carolina Kitchens, Todd and Kaye chose the “Linear Silver” finish for the Acrilux cabinet doors. Of the couple’s selection, Stewart offers, “It has a nice reflective quality, but it is also a neutral because it is metallic.” Having been a kitchen designer with Carolina Kitchens for 14 years, Stewart knows what looks good—from contemporary to traditional—since the cabinet-only company caters to any and all tastes.

“We stick with cabinets because that’s what we do best. We let other people do tile and countertops because that is what they do best,” states Stewart. With the cabinetry selected, the trio was successful in setting the tone. This allowed Kaye and Todd to tackle the other finishes themselves— lighting, logically, being one of the most important contributions. A Month of Parties Seeking to merely replace a few cushions, two Lowcountry homeowners found themselves purchasing outdoor furniture to fill their entire yard.
H
omeowners of a sun-washed, marsh-side home looked to replace their outdoor cushions, which had become faded from the harsh weather conditions of the area. What they found in their search for simple cushions was motivation to replace their entire outdoor-living furniture set. Palm Casual, the company from which the homeowners purchased, persuaded them not through any kind of gimmick—just an honest, open-ended offer presented to all of the customers that walk through the door. “We offer a 30-day money-

They started with the Relaxed Wicker Collection, boasting a tightly wound core weave. “Then,” describes Aaron, “they built around that collection with some cast furniture—the Grand Terrace Collection—including a bistro set built at counter height, two chairs, and matching chaise lounges.” Finally, they purchased some rocking chairs made from a composite material, which will not fade in the sun. What resulted from these
purchases was a well-rounded property appointed with a multitude of inviting outdoor spaces. And while the homeowners would like to keep buying more pieces, they simply have no room and no need since each of the sets is guaranteed for a lifetime. “We couldn’t stay in business for this long [35 years] if our furniture fell apart. Just Relax Juan Tamarit, the Lowcountry’s king of eclectic home fashion, gets a swimming pool that reflects his modern, vibrant style.
S
oon after moving into his James Island house, Juan began to dream of a pool, and because he had worked with Aqua Blue Pools in the past, he gave Vice President Clint Fore a call to create and install his new oasis. Juan explains, “Clint and I wanted to create a pool that was totally different. We wanted it to incorporate nature and be minimalistic and industrial to match my house’s trim and the fence. We did not want a typical kidneyshaped pool.” Juan lived in Asia for many

years, and he also desired for his yard to reflect a philosophy championed by the Amanpuri resort in Phuket that calls for basic designs that mimic natural environments. To achieve this complete aura, Clint recommended simplicity all around with a rectangular design and purposefully unfinished pavers and tiles to add interest. While Juan is a huge proponent of relaxing in a natural environment, the pool also serves as a centerpiece for

entertaining, and the duo designed it to adhere to such a dual purpose. “It’s about having fun. This is not a deep pool, which is a great idea because regardless of how much partying you want to do, your head is always above water,” Juan describes. Due to its shallow construction, the pool is a bit safer than deeper installations. Oftentimes, when juggling the decision of owning a pool, homeowners
weigh the fun and relaxing aspects against the hassle of its upkeep. For Juan, this is no conundrum. He says, “I feel very strongly that, in an environment like Charleston, a pool should not be a luxury. It should be standard. It’s relaxing, and its care is simple. They [the team at Aqua Blue] take care of it.” Juan works with Aqua Blue’s professionals (who come to his home weekly) to keep his slice of
paradise clean. They use a simple chlorination treatment, which was the best choice for such a small installation. There is also a robot [which Juan has named Stanley] that roams around the pool

hite, shaker-style inset cabinetry is oft considered to fall into the traditional category, and many kitchens in Charleston proudly feature this simple, clean choice. However, the cabinetry’s ability to absorb modern accents and transform into a stylish, up-to-date space may come as a surprise. Jay Valk, owner of Classic Kitchens of Charleston and 10-year veteran in the Lowcountry’s kitchen-design field, was able to use this cabinetry to create a space that merges classic style with modern panache. Jay proposes, “If you take that same cabinet that is in this house and add a heavy floor treatment, arched valances,
and elaborate bun feet, it would look very traditional. But here, we created a very straight line at the bottom, installed a simple two-piece crown moulding, and used very contemporary drawer-and-cabinet pulls. With these features, the cabinetry becomes modern very quickly.” To stay within this style, Jay and the homeowners chose to include a vertically placed hood encasement to punctuate the sleek, stainless steel appliances. The whole process relied upon Jay’s ability to take a popular cabinet door in a neutral color and transform it into something chic and modern. Jay is actually no stranger to catering to such customer

requests. Most homeowners, he reveals, arrive at his showroom with a list of ideas (or a book of Houzz photos). Termite Trouble Mount Pleasant homeowners Bill and Nancy Rathman learned the real dangers of termite damage when they discovered, just a few short months ago, that their home was infested by the chomping critters.
W
hen Bill and Nancy Rathman began considering updating their two-story Mount Pleasant home, they started noticing every detail of each room—the paint color of the living room, the finishes in the bathrooms, and the floor in the kitchen, which, they saw, was buckling. Concerned about the state of their hardwoods, the Rathmans investigated and learned that a termite infestation was causing their flooring woes. They called an exterminator to eliminate the problem, but the termites persisted. In early June of this year, Nancy saw the critters crawling into the house and determined that they must destroy the pests once and for all. After receiving a recommendation from their neighbor, Bill and Nancy called Tommy Evans, owner of Thomas Evans Custom Building and Renovations, a local company that specializes in permanently fixing termite damage. Loni Evans of Thomas Evans informs, “By the time people know they have them, it’s already a big problem.” Tommy and Loni attack termite issues by surveying the damage and peeling off layers of the home until there are no bugs in sight. For the Rathman’s abode, Tommy negotiated with the insurance agency about the homeowners’ termite bond to cover the cost of all the necessary renovations. The termites existed underneath the house and behind the brickwork, so Tommy removed the bricks and replaced much of the underlying wall framing, the structural support beams in the crawlspace, the affected windows and doors, and the roof. He ensured that every single infested piece of wood was removed from the home. The termites did not damage the entire house; however, Tommy installed all new bricks so that the structure looked as good as new with no mismatched parts. He explains, “The customer paid for their

insurance termite bond. They deserve for the house to be put back properly, losing no property or resale value for inconsistent siding or bricks.” Although it was heartrending to watch their beloved abode come apart pieceby-piece, the Rathmans were grateful that the repairs could be made with relative ease. (They didn’t even have to leave the comfort of their home during the process!) Along the way, they learned a few lessons to protect themselves against future damage. The Rathman’s top tips include hiring a qualified and trustworthy extermination company that performs a
thorough termite evaluation each year, noticing when bats are swarming the house (because they feed on termites), fixing water damage as soon as possible, and removing all untreated wood from the ground near the base of the house. By being hyper-aware of not only the dangers of termite damage, but also the methods by which trouble begins, the Rathmans are now well-equipped to avoid such a problem in the coming years. v

Time Flies Noticing that their dark kitchen was not aging with grace, the Rinaldis updated it with brightness, modernity, and exquisiteness.
W
hen most think of I’On, images of brand-new construction and high-end design come to mind. However, time has moved forward more quickly than imaginable, and many of the houses in the neighborhood are approaching their 15-year anniversary. Linda and Frank Rinaldi, owners of a 12-yearold I’On beauty, noticed that their dark kitchen possessed a design that was not appealing to this new decade. Linda laughs, saying, “It needed a facelift. It was aging, and it wasn’t aging well.”

The original kitchen featured black honed-granite countertops, glazed wood cabinets, and no backsplash whatsoever. To veer away from this design, the Rinaldis began their renovation journey with research; the couple interviewed multiple contractors and visited eons of projects around the Lowcountry. Eventually, they found Rafael Quedevez and Matt Barion, the pair of brothers who own Real Deal Countertops. They worked with Linda and Frank to develop a plan and start construction.

The team decided to keep the existing footprint of the kitchen, install a glass-tile backsplash, paint the cabinet boxes, purchase new cabinet doors, and replace the countertop—the most unique feature of the remodel. Linda and Frank chose a quartzite countertop, a deviation from the typical granite option. Linda describes, “I’ve always been a fan of marble, but it’s not practical for the kitchen. The quartzite has the look of marble with the function of granite. I couldn’t believe how attracted I was to that slab [laughs]. Unfortunately,
it was a little higher than the budget allowed, but Frank and I decided it was worth it.” After the Rinaldis selected the quartzite slab, the fabricators at Real Deal cut it to match the surface area of the kitchen and installed it along with the new backsplash and fresh cabinetry. The Rinaldis are certain that these updates will last for years to come and add resale value to their I’On home. v

M
uch of what we see of a candidate during an election is a well-polished mask crafted to attain the maximum vote, and the rest of what we see is a contradictory identity, warped by negative
ads and unsubstantiated claims. Even for the most genuine of candidates, true personality (logically) tends to rest on the backburner in lieu of platforms and sound bites. So, it was quite the treat for me to really get to know the man behind the name Curtis Bostic, which graced political signs across the Lowcountry in early 2013. We had an unguarded, in-depth conversation, the type that an election time cannot afford, in his modest home office filled with his wife and five children (who, I might add, were all there of their own volition to listen to their dad tell the story of his life). We talked not so much of his run, which had already been covered by the news outlets, but more about what they didn’t cover—his strong faith, his adventurous family, his 35-acre property, and his non-profit organization, entitled Remember, which actively attempts to assist persecuted Christians in parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Seeing that issue at hand, through his eyes, made me and will make you (even if you’re across party lines) root for Curtis and his committed crew of volunteers. So, true, he did not win South Carolina’s vote last year, but I think he’s already been elected as the best representation for his suffering fellow Christians. Now knowing the man behind the political signs, I believe he’d prefer it no other way.

Notably, you were in a GOP runoff election against Mark Sanford— who ended up taking South Carolina’s 1st congressional district seat. But your life is not typically politically focused. Tell me about your business. The attorneys at the Bostic Law Firm work in civil practice areas including real estate and business closings, construction and business litigation, estate and tax planning, and even personal injury and nursing home abuse. We are unique in Charleston because we represent oil and gas companies. Well, that is unusual, as there isn’t much going on in South Carolina in terms of oil and gas. How did you find yourself representing those types of defendants?

When I was growing up in eastern Kentucky, the state was going through a coal boom, so I started working for a guy who did some drilling. Their company grew. Years later, after I became a lawyer, he called and said, “Hey, we need some help.” So, he sent a jet down to pick me up probably fifteen years ago. I started doing oil-and-gas work for them and gained a reputation. Now, I am licensed in North Carolina, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, as well as South Carolina. Do you ever feel conflicted, representing the often-vilified oil and gas companies? Most of the negative opinion of the oiland-gas industry stems from misunderstanding. Domestic energy production isn’t optional; it’s vital to our national security and our economy. The vast
majority of American energy-related companies are family-owned and environmentally conscious. In fact, natural gas is our cleanest burning fuel. We are blessed to have it in abundance. Some of the best people I have ever known— in Kentucky and all over the country— operate family businesses that make their living keeping our houses warm, growing our economy, and increasing our energy independence. So did you spend all of your formative years in Kentucky? My mom and dad were from Kentucky. They went to Chicago and married. I was actually born in Chicago and lived there until about middle school. My dad was hardworking, so money wasn’t a problem. Alcohol was a problem, and our family came apart. During that time, a lady from a local church told my mother how she could have a new life by admitting her sin and putting faith in Jesus Christ. My mom became a Christian. My dad was leaving us and came home to get his belongings. As he drove up, the lady who had talked to my mom pulled up in the driveway behind him. She told
him how he, too, could have a new life like my mom had received. Later, alone in the basement of our home, my father admitted his sin and put faith in Christ. Our family was radically transformed; everything changed. My father later took classes at Moody Bible Institute. Then, because there were no solid churches where he spent his childhood, he packed us up, and we moved to rural Kentucky to start a church. I love the area. I had amazing experiences there and developed lifelong friendships with some of the most interesting, genuine, and kindhearted people I have ever met. You have quite the history—in Illinois and Kentucky. Under what circumstances did you move to South Carolina? I followed my wife, Jenny, to South Carolina. We both went to Appalachian Bible College. I kind of watched her. I liked what I saw. (This is a true story.) I went up to her, and I said, “Jenny, I’d like to marry you. Will you go out with me Saturday?” I chased her till she caught me. She is from Charleston, which is why we moved here after graduation.
Wow. How did you know you wanted to marry her from afar? What about her spoke to you? Everything. Her remarkable character. She is one of those people who is kind to everybody. You can tell that she is beautiful. She was very, very talented. She’s smart. She was always one of the best kids in the class. I needed all of that kind of stuff to get into my gene pool. [laughs] If you don’t mind my asking, are you tearing up right now? I might be. There are some things in life that you plan out and execute the best that you can. Then, there are other things that you feel like God just puts in your lap. And you look back and you think, I wasn’t smart enough to do that on my own. This is the single best example right here. And now you have a beautiful family with five children, and you live on this amazing piece of property. Describe what it was like to build your own estate.

When we bought these 35 acres, they were just raw. It was a rough piece of property. We did a lot of the site-clearing work ourselves. We rented excavators, dump trucks, and bulldozers, and we went to town. The kids drove them for months. For the house, we wanted a farmhouse look—something that, to us, was inviting. We wanted plenty of room and plenty of bedrooms for people to stay in without being too fancy. We have a lot of people come here, so we wanted something that people could move through fairly easily. We gave Rick Jackson, our builder, our ideas, and he just did it—beautifully. This property has another component to it, though—Peaceful Way. What is its purpose? We started the Peaceful Way side eight years ago. We make the pavilion build-
ing available to non-profit organizations—Habitat for Humanity, Kids with Cancer, homeschool groups, Charleston County EMS, Charleston County Sheriff ’s Association, C17 Squadrons, and lots of churches. People may come for a ladies’ gathering, or kids may come to do something on the pond. We just make it available. You really put your family to work to create suitable land for both Peaceful Way and the main home, which is admirable, but what do y’all do for fun? We like motorcycles and airplanes in our family. We all ride, except for mom. I always wanted to fly. When I was a kid, my dad had a friend who was an airline pilot, and we used to go out to O’Hare [International Airport] and watch the planes take off. When I was in law school, there
was a guy who was a commercial pilot, and I managed to talk him into teaching me how to fly. Now, Joseph is learning to fly, and Jonathan has learned to fly. We have determined, though, that we’re going to get into paramotoring. We came home and announced that the other day. You strap a fan on your back with a motor, like a backpack. Then, you have a glider wing that you hold, and you run. They’re kind of new and pretty neat. Hearing about your adventurous spirit leads me to my next question— the heart of why I feel your story is so unique. What made you start Remember, your non-profit organization that seeks to help those in underdeveloped countries? Jenny, Daniel, and I were in Thailand, Laos, and Burma. (We went into CH+D • Fall 2014

Liberty and Justice for All Burma illegally, at that time.) We had a first-hand view of some facts that aren’t known today. More people will lose their lives for faith this year than in any other year in human history. Religious persecution is at its apex right now. And you don’t hear about it. It’s compelling to our family. It’s the same reason that I am involved in law. I care very much about liberty and freedom issues. For the organiza-
tion, it’s the combination of that and knowing Christ; it’s wanting people to have liberty to live out their faith. In what countries does Remember have a presence? We’re in Iraq. We had property in Sudan that a Muslim group liked more than we did, and they came in and took it with their guns. [laughs] So, we bought more property, and we’ll be building in
Sudan again. We have a safe house in Liberia, too, and, of course, Burma. CNN just produced a list of some of the most dangerous places in the world to be religious, and Burma is in the top ten. Burma, in particular, seems like a place upon which Remember is focused. Why is that? If you look at Human Rights Watch’s information, you’ll see that a war is going on that isn’t even really publicized. The Junta is trying to wipe out (in a genocidal fashion) the Kachin people. As we sit here today, they have 70,000 Kachin people trapped in a tenmile-wide strip along the Chinese border. I say that because Remember has orphanages in Burma, and our kids come from the Kachin and two other groups—the Chin and the Karen. The reason for that is because those three groups are in the lowest caste. They also have the majority of Christians among them. We created an orphanage that provides shelter and education for the children of the church whose parents have been martyred. Who are the Junta, and how can they continue to wipe out entire groups of people? There was a coup, a military takeover of the country. That military is the Junta. They renamed the country Myanmar. Although the Junta has technically been out of power since 2011, the leading members want to maintain their grip on the country. I’ll say it this way: Every single village that we’ve worked with in the jungle has been wiped out. The Junta has moved in and just mowed them down. We’ll ask the kids to draw pictures of their lives, and they’ll sketch their parents being machine gunned, their mothers being abused, and their fathers being beaten to death.

So, Remember has become involved in saving the Christian orphans of Burma. Why have you developed this particular objective in Burma?

We began first by helping Christians who were hiding from the Junta in the jungles of Burma. During the first years, we would get night-vision goggles, metal detectors, and medical supplies, and we would smuggle ourselves across the border into the jungle, which is filled with landmines, in order to bring aid to those in hiding. At the time, it was the most densely mined area in the world. I have been there in the rain, and you can hear explosions going off, when a tree limb or something of that nature falls.
What are your goals for these orphanages? Our goal is to combine those two into one orphanage, which will hold about 150 kids to start. We have enough land [7 acres] that we could eventually grow to 400. The new, merged building will be a lot more
efficient. Right now, we’re hauling food to both. We’re getting workers for both. We’re trying to provide security for both. We’re trying to keep relationships in both communities, which is really, really important. You don’t want the native people in the communities to be broadcasting what you’re doing.
Then, as things worked out, we made contact with a guy named Paul inside Burma, who was struggling to operate a children’s home. He would carry kids (who’d lost their parents to the Junta, land mines, or disease) out of the jungle and into a facility. He had a handful of children and was really unable to do anything else. Remember saw a large need there, so we said, “Let’s formalize this.” Paul came on full time with us, as did some others, and now we have two orphanages there with about 100 kids.

Our objective is to complete this facility. Then, we want to build a place for the orphans’ transition period. I’d like them to finish in our orphanage [at 16] and have a year or two years where we focus on their ability to sustain a job and manage their money. I mean, think about it; we take these kids from the jungle, not because their parents are primitive oriented, but because they have run there for their lives. These kids can be the veterinarians and the shop owners and the plumbers and the lawyers of Burma. We want to really polish them.
Second, we’re looking for a team to go with us this upcoming summer to do some of the construction. We’ll have Burmese people basically build the walls, but I would like a team from Charleston to come in and do the plumbing, electrical, and what limited HVAC that the orphanage is going to have. Finally, we need a contingent of physicians next summer. We almost always take a medical element with us because that does wonders for building goodwill in the community. We’ve got great doctors that volunteer regularly. We just can’t roll them out enough.
What does Remember need in order to achieve goals of this kind?
How many people are involved in Remember?
Three things, I would say. First, we need money to continue our construction. We have paid for the property. We bought an orchard over there, which has been neat because the kids have been able to continue their farming efforts.
Hundreds. We have a very active board of 11; they travel regularly. They do research and planning for the efforts in which we are involved. Given we work in Iraq, Sudan, Burma, and other potentially hostile places, we don’t just hop on a plane. It takes seri-

ous forethought to do what we do safely. We study and prepare for the threats, establish reliable contacts, and have an exit plan. We are also blessed with core volunteers and consistent givers. A distinguishing fact about Remember is that 100 percent of what people give goes to the need. For example, we don’t take 20 dollars out of someone’s 100-dollar donation to do our print or to pay somebody’s salary. I understand Remember is able to do that because your law firm covers all of the administrative fees? Yes. That’s kind of the non-flashy side of giving. Nobody wants to give to the print and the internet. We take care of the behind-the-scenes part so others can give to the most important part. After the building is paid off, how much does Remember need to maintain the environment that you’ve created for these children?
Remember can keep a child fed, clothed, and educated for 30 dollars a month. Our kids are growing about 80 percent of their own food. When they grow up, that’s the kind of world they’re going to live in. They’re not going to move to Manhattan or live on Isle of Palms. Even if they are fortunate enough to be an architect in Burma, for instance, the way architects live in Burma is different. We’re not trying to Westernize these kids. Even if you look at our buildings, by Burmese standards, they are very nice structures. By our standards, they would be considered rudimentary, but that is intentional for us. We don’t want our kids to move into a place that is like an airconditioned, Western home because they have to leave that someday. They have to know how to live contentedly in the world where they are. What an incredible gift you’ve given to those children. And what a remarkable life you’ve led. It’s surprising—and also not—that you weren’t able to capture the majority of the vote last year, considering your evident drive to help others. Was your family very disappointed when you didn’t win?

people wanted to get their picture taken with this gentleman. I jus got in my car and went away unnoticed. I thought, You know, it’s nice to be able to just go home, and have supper with my wife and kids.
If the time is right, we might try that again. In the meantime, though, we’re happy being us. H
testament to the quality of the people who believed in and supported our cause. Life lived in the public eye is challenging; disappointment is part of it. For us, the disappointment was less of a challenge because we enjoy the life we have been blessed with. We weren’t looking for fulfillment in an office or title. We were already contented people. The other day, I had lunch with one of our prominent elected officials. We got up to leave the restaurant, and some

BASICS:
Common hardwoods include oak, maple, mahogany, cherry, walnut, rosewood, and teak. They are milled from angiosperm trees that produce broad leaves, and they are ideal for flooring and furniture.
Common softwoods include hickory, pine, beech, birch, cedar, spruce, fir, and hemlock. Softwoods are most often milled from conifer trees (which bear cones) and are used for a home’s framing.
Basic lumber includes plywood and strand board. These strong, composite materials can be manufactured cheaply, making them good options for unseen, structural surfaces, such as subflooring.

When organizing any space, start by taking everything out. Then sort it from there. Often, you will find items that don’t belong there or items that you just don’t need anymore. Don’t write directly on the side of storage boxes or containers. Use labels or masking tape instead so that you can use the boxes for other items at a later date.

Once you are finished with a document or paper, try to file it immediately in an appropriate folder. If you are short on time, place the paper in a folder on your desk that is designated with the words For Filing. Then, once a week, schedule a ten-minute filing session.

If you are having trouble staying on top of routine tasks, pencil time into your daily schedule. Treat household appointments with as much importance as you would a doctor’s appointment.

Open a second email account for your online ordering needs. This way, you can direct any junk mail to that mailbox.

The closer you store an item to the place where you use it, the quicker and easier it will be to clean up. When you are moving from one room to another to put an item away, always try to find other items to bring with you. If you grab three or more items, you will see that it takes less effort and time to tidy up.

If you have children who leave toys around the house, it is a good idea to keep a decorative basket with a handle in the room that gets cluttered the most. The items can all be put in the basket and easily carried to their appropriate places.
Don’t purchase something, and think, I can return it later. Chances are that you won’t return it, which means you’ve wasted time and money and you’ve created clutter.

With a clothespin, attach a mesh bag to the outside of every family member’s laundry hamper so that you can sort socks as you’re throwing the dirty clothes in the hamper.

Plan your meals a week in advance, and do all your grocery shopping ahead of time so you don’t have to worry about what to make and whether you will need to go to the store.

Out of Your Home Into Your City Snack Break at Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit By: Megan J. Busch Last issue, Charleston Home + Design gave you an in-depth look into the life of Charleston’s own biscuiteer, Carrie Morey. Since then, the inspiring entrepreneur has opened the eagerly anticipated Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit on King Street. Of course, she invited editor Christy Conway and me to the bakery, and we found ourselves in a flaky, doughy heaven. Built into an old alleyway, the downtown building resembles the shape of a stick of butter. In fact, the kitchen may actually be the skinniest one on the East

Coast. Rivaling the uniqueness of the bakery and retro-inspired décor was the unmistakable, savory smell of baking biscuits. Christy and I were treated to a cinnamon biscuit, a BLT served on a cracked-pepper biscuit, and a slice of delectable tomato pie.
