ver the holidays, I think about baking Christmas cookies with my mom. It's one of my fondest memories and it all happened in what many refer to as the heart of the home; the kitchen. Our annual kitchen guide showcases dozens of the Lowcountry’s top kitchens, completed by professionals you’ll find right here in Charleston. Planning and Purpose at the Cornerstone Builder Anthony Wiedemuth and Michelle Almeyda-Wiedemuth of Cornerstone Estates discuss their favorite features available in a luxury home build.
He Said: Light programming. I like the convenience of being able to shut off and/or dim the interior and exterior lights, using your phone and/or another voice operated integrating devices from anywhere. These features can also maximize energy savings.
The home theater is a feature I’ve offered since 2003. It is definitely a luxury item that many have found to be a life saver in this last year. Some of the features I’ve included are fiber optic lighting to create a ceiling with constellations and shooting stars and massage chairs.
Steam room. This is a great therapeutic feature for the home with so many physical and mental health benefits. Installing one in your home will give you the ability to unwind from a stressful day and create a spa-like environment within your home. When installed in your shower, it will become a convenient part of your day.

While home gyms are an obvious investment in one's health, I also find them to be an investment in time efficiency. A home gym never closes, so you can get in a work out whenever it fits your schedule. 1 Jennifer has found in recent years clients are straying away from formal dining rooms, however, she wanted to maintain a separate space that could be used for dinner parties and holidays, as well as casual family meals. In the dining room, Jennifer played with scale, texture, and color to bring together a space that would draw people in.
2 The wet bar is Jennifer's one-stop shop for all things beverage and
entertaining. This space offers everything needed from morning coffee to evening cocktails. The family’s beverage center, as they like to call it, truly has it all; ice, a beverage fridge, a second dishwasher, a trash/ recycling rollout, and loads of storage.
3 In the living room, art was the main focus. Jennifer didn’t want to draw
attention to the television but instead highlight the art. And to do so in a way that still felt like a comfortable living space for her family. She kept the original wood mantel, marble surround, and elegant mouldings but added a contemporary touch with the furnishings and color palette.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON
Crafted with Love Meaghan Jackson of Yankee WoodWorks crafts a variety of custom wood pieces for Lowcountry homeowners.
The Craftswoman Meaghan has always enjoyed crafting. She finds immense pride in her ability to envision a custom piece fitting in that particular space. Her journey to opening Yankee WoodWorks began about five years ago after her youngest child was born. She needed a new dining table but couldn’t find anything that fit her taste and needs; with the help of her tools, she built her new table with a wooden base and tile and epoxy top. After encouragement from her family and friends, Meaghan decided it was time to start her business to bring other people custom pieces that would fit their style and space the way her new table fit hers.
Her Process with a vision. It’s always helpful to at least have some idea of what you’re looking for when you start a project. Once Meaghan and her client are on the same page, she begins planning what materials and tools are needed to complete her client’s request. To build the product, Meaghan uses a combination of drills, saws, and glue. Based on the client’s ideas, she’ll use a variety of finishes. When she’s creating something on her own, Meaghan likes to let the wood guide her. “It will let me know what it wants

Shipping containers carry a variety of functions that many people don’t think of; pools, pool houses, storage, and even greenhouses. LEARNING THE LINGO
Let's Talk Surfaces There are so many things to consider when deciding on countertops for your home from the finish to the edges and the surface itself. Here’s a breakdown on some different terms to become familiar with.
Slab
A slab is a large piece of stone or quartz from which the countertops will be cut. The number of square feet and ability to match seams affects the number of slabs a project may need.
Fabricator
A fabricator goes to your home to template or measure the cabinet countertops for a selected stone or quartz installation. After carefully measuring they know, by using a laser or template material, how each surface piece is to be cut. It accurately provides exact square footage used to create a total price for material, fabrication, and installation.
Wholesaler
A stone wholesaler has thousands of slabs stored in a warehouse to peruse. A homeowner typically chooses a slab to be cut and installed.

Waterfall Edge
When countertops have a waterfall edge, the material runs vertically down the cabinets to the floor as a solid piece. The fabricator “bookmatches” the horizontal portion of the countertop using a mitered cut with the vertical surface so that the two adjoining surfaces mirror each other, like an open book.
Honed Finish
When a countertop has a honed finish, the gloss of the stone is removed for a matte look. This reduces the reflection of overhead lighting and provides an organic, raw look.
Installation

Why did you want to become a custom home builder? I went to school for civil engineering because I love architecture. My dad was a custom home builder and I have the entrepreneurial spirit in me as well. It seemed very natural to me to pursue custom home building.
What makes this particular project unique? This particular project is more of a classic Charleston home with great design. Most homes we have the opportunity to build are more of a modern coastal style so this was a fun change for us.
How long did this project take to complete? Is that typical for a project of this scope? This home took 12 months to complete. This was quicker than normal which we credit to the homeowner and designer being very involved; we had a great team. Homes this size and magnitude usually take 16-18 months to complete.
What advice do you have for homeowners looking to start the build or remodel process? It is always a great idea to choose your builder before you start the design process. The builder then has the opportunity to know the plans as intimately as the homeowners when the bid process begins.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? The completed project is the most rewarding; to be able to step back and see what your team’s hands have made.

What makes this home unique from your other projects? It’s a house with two identities: a retreat for my clients that had to check a lot of boxes, in terms of how they wanted to use and enjoy this unique beach house, and a functional, profitable, and sustainable rental unit for all kinds of different potential users.
How did you design this home to be sustainable? In addition to energy, water, and other utility savings from the geothermal system, we carefully considered lighting, appliances, water heaters, and every other system in the house to maximize efficiency. We also selected the best doors and windows along with a very strong structural system that provided enhanced performance in terms of strength, thermal insulation, and noise control.
How is designing a beachfront home different from other homes? There is a different flow to the lifestyle of a beach house; how people gather. Those things need to be thoughtfully incorporated along with the client’s budget, hopes, and dreams. Beach homes are reinforced structurally and elevated as required to protect it from flooding and high winds in storms.
You’re both a builder and an architect, correct? Talk about the benefits that offers potential clients. I was both a builder and an architect, but transitioned out of construction a couple years ago, not too long after finishing this home. Having a builder and an architect on board gives many advantages such as cost control from the very beginning. I work with a builder early on in the process; they start developing a preliminary budget and suggest some building materials and approaches that might fit best with the design as it develops.

What inspired you to pursue a career in interior design?
Ever since I was a little girl I always moved my room around and painted it. My mom would come home sometimes to the whole house rearranged. When it was time to go off to college it was obvious what I was going to major in.
How do you marry your own style with a client's wants for a space? When working with a client I really don’t marry my own style into their space. My job as a designer is to make their home a reflection of them. I laugh and tell them I am the bumper pads that keep them in the right lane.
Why is it beneficial for homeowners to work with an interior designer? It is so beneficial for homeowners to work with a designer. My job is to do all the leg work and research. This can be very overwhelming for a lot of people. Being in the industry for over 25 years, I can take all the heartache and frustration out.
What is the most challenging aspect of a project? Challenges in some projects are making financial choices. I try to advise my clients where to put their money and then do the project in phases; rather than make rash or regrettable decisions.
What are your favorite elements in this home? Some of my favorite elements of this project are the use of color and mixing patterns with the wallpaper choices. My client has very unique pieces that we incorporated and then we created new ones to add to their collection. We designed a coffee table that was custom built for her living room that fit perfectly and can take the wear and tear from grandchildren, of course adults too!

Honoring Charleston's History Pro on the go Will Smith of Lowcountry Iron and Woodworks let's us take a peek into the life of a custom iron and woodworker.

Will begins his day by loading up his materials and consulting with his crew before heading off to the first job site of the day.
The crane arrives and straps are attached to lift the iron spiral staircase over the entire house from the street to secure on the back sundeck.

Will touches base at another job site he started a few days prior to check on progress and touch up a wrought iron door and its handrails with industrial grade, oil based paint in the popular “Charleston Green” color.
At the first job site on Daniel Island, a custom spiral staircase is getting installed on the third floor of a classic Charleston style home.
Finishing touches are welded into place and the crane is cut loose and on to the next job.
11:30am
The team arrives at job two of the day in Mt. Pleasant. This time to install structural supporting iron flitch plates and columns to support a cantilevered front deck. Will gets many requests from architects and builders for structural steel.
4:00pm After a long day of building, the team heads back to their shop in North, South Carolina near Orangeburg to finish a day’s work on a piece of custom metal artwork. It is going to be a surprise for his daughters and wife. His team gladly helped complete the last, most important project of the day.
1:00pm After lunch, it is time to meet the next homeowner for a one-on-one consultation. This family was looking for an iron fence and gate to be installed; something that mimicked the historic gates often seen downtown.

Why do architects and builders have siding encapsulated?
“
We receive the siding from the local lumber yard. Once the material is ready to be coated and it’s been staged, we moisture check all of the material to make sure it is dry enough to be fully encapsulated. Once moisture is checked, the material runs through a machine and goes through a series of brushes that push the paint or stain deeply into the material. Once it goes through the machine it is placed on drying racks for at least 24 hours and allowed to dry naturally, which allows coating to penetrate deep into the material stabilizing, the material on all sides. Once dry, it is rebundled and shipped back to the lumberyard and off to its final destination or jobsite and installed for many years of low maintenance and enjoyment for the homeowner.

How do your products hold up in a climate like Charleston?
“
We have a variety of garden ornamentation that we offer from aluminum garden furniture to lead statuary and fountains; we have some bronze sundials and we also have cast stone ornaments which are fountains, finials, and statues. All of our garden furniture is cast aluminum and is heavy. People will mistake it for being iron, but with aluminum there is no rust occurring. For example, one of our more popular garden chairs is 25 pounds. That is a good hefty weight for a chair which is also going to help with windy situations. You won’t lose your chairs and they will pretty much stay planted. The aluminum is finished with a primer as well as a paint and a top coating of glaze and lacquer so those layers are enough to protect from the salt air.

lmost every Lowcountry resident has most likely daydreamed of diving into a refreshing backyard pool and looking out onto the marsh on one of the many scorching hot days when you just can’t escape the heat. Maybe your daydream includes family and friends laughing and splashing around, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Lowcountry pool professionals were able to make this dream a reality for these Daniel Island homeowners. Nestled into a marshfront property on the island is what Brian Peppin of Blue Haven Pools & Spas describes as the “rolex of pools,” which he had the pleasure of seeing through from start to finish. Designing the perfect pool for a client is no quick process. First, the Blue Haven designer develops a relationship with the clients to establish exactly what it is that they want and desire out of their backyard project. “They wanted something bold and sexy, modern with clean lines, and something out of the

ordinary,” says Brian. The client’s vision of this luxurious entertainment bringing family and friends together was inspiring to the Blue Haven team. They set out to create something spectacular. This particular property has beautiful views and expansive space. It was important to the team that the renovation didn’t interfere with the stunning natural surroundings, but rather to enhance the beautiful environment of the backyard. A vanishing edge was installed to allow your eyes to keep looking beyond the pool to the Lowcountry waterfront view. carefully crafted and designed to nestle into a tight space but feels very large upon entering the backyard. Accompanied by a uniquely shaped spa and a large sun ledge flanking both sides of the sunken seating area and fire pit, this pool has it all. Of course obstacles are bound to arise and this project was no exception. The main obstacle during this specific process was a lack of space on the property. The Blue Haven team had to demolish existing raised patios to make room for the new pool. Transporting the materials to the secluded backyard was a

time-consuming project in itself, but “it’s all worth it once that water hits the pool,” concludes Brian. The client and his family are sure to agree. With this oneof-a-kind masterpiece in their backyard, they’ll be able to soak up the sun and marsh views the Lowcountry has to offer. ✴

Masterful Collaboration

A custom home builder and local building material supply company collaborated on this project to give these homeowners a well-constructed, durable Lowcountry dwelling.
T
he design process is crucial when beginning a custom home build. During this process, custom home builder Roy Mahshie of Mahshie Custom Homes worked with his team to determine center points for can lights, supply registers, speakers, etc.; essentially anything that was going to be seen once the sheetrock was put up. They also examined the reflective ceiling and trim details to determine layouts. This in turn dictated the layout of the floor joist, rough-in materials, and anything else that prohibited them from getting a flawless home layout. “Symmetry is very important to us, so proper planning is critical before we start building,” Roy says.

Since each home is custom, every experience is different. The selections Roy makes change, finishes are different, and styles are unique to each homeowner’s lifestyle. However there is one constant that Roy brings to each build: quality. “Quality is what all of my homeowners are looking for and that is what they get,” he notes. Typically, a custom home like this one takes between 14-16 months to complete. In this instance, the project began in 2020, a time with long lead times for products and materials needed to complete the project, so it took 18 months, however, Roy credits a great team of material suppliers for overcoming those challenges. “Every home presents its

own set of challenges,” Roy begins. “Having great material suppliers such as Buck Lumber, and highly talented trade professionals working together makes navigating through them possible.” Roy also notes that he’s very transparent on his expectations and level of perfection he demands on his homes so trade professionals he works with know what they’re getting into. One Home at a Time

This Lowcountry couple flipped their first home and started their business at the same time.
N
early six years ago, Katelyn Irizarry of Polished Renovations & Design purchased her first home and started dating her future husband Kyle. The two embarked on the renovation process together and brought on Kyle’s friend Ben to help with carpentry and build projects. The group worked so well together they began dreaming up their future business and were ready to start concentrating on custom work. When the three got together, Kyle recently purchased a home so they were in the process of renovating two homes at once, all while trying to get their business off the ground.
Capehouse, the home that Kyle purchased, would become not only the couple’s first project but also their first home as a married couple. “Renovating houses is a passion and it’s such an awesome way to express our creativity,” Katelyn begins. “It’s so much fun, and patience-testing.” As the couple began tackling the Capehouse project, they knew it wouldn’t be their forever home, but a home they’d be in for a while. It was designed with casual living in mind.

Both Katelyn and Kyle had specific things they wanted in this home; Katelyn an antique brick herringbone vent hood and Kyle cypress shutters. They worked with it and made it up as they went. They got creative with their ideas which they still do today, just with more planning and guidelines involved. The Capehouse project was just the beginning for the Irizarrys. “We learned so much doing everything by hand,” Katelyn explains. “While we understand the value of hiring someone else to do the fine custom finishings, we would never have had such a good understanding if we didn’t ever do it ourselves.” When they begin a project now, they start with an on-site consultation where they walk the property with their client and talk about their ideas for the project. They ask for inspiration photos and probe for information about how they live so they can incorporate that into the plans. After the first site visit, if there is drafting or structural work

involved, the Irizarrys and their new general contractor and project manager Bradley head back to the property to gather all necessary information to formulate a plan of attack. If structural work is not involved, all information is gathered during the first meeting. Once the plans are together, the PRD team takes a few weeks to develop a detailed design package which includes the scope of work, purchase list, and 3D renderings. During that time, their estimator is looking at those documents to turn them into a proper estimate. Next, it’s time to present the client with the proposal. “They are presented with an entire project package,” Katelyn adds. “We work through any adjustments needed, and once a contract is signed, we select a start date and move onto the design phase where we get to do the fun things like fixtures and finishes.”
mildew issues, an old roof, an awkward layout, an outdoor laundry room, and green turf in one of the rooms were just some of the challenges they had to overcome. However, they were able to visualize the possibilities and didn’t let the challenge deter them from building a stunning home which included German smear brickwork, shiplap wainscoting, a 10-ft kitchen island, and so many other unique features they loved. The Irizarrys have sold Capehouse and are now embarking on a new home journey which also includes a design studio for their team. Big, Bold, and Beautiful With a desire to find bold vintage rugs in varying sizes for her home on Wadmalaw Island, this homeowner contacted Zuma to assist in sourcing authentic products.
L
owcountry homeowner Hailey was looking for unique vintage rugs with interesting designs and unusual colors for spaces throughout her home. With specific sizes and designs in mind, Hailey called upon the team at Zuma to source the rugs for her home. Hailey’s initial question for Elyse and Zuhal, owners of Zuma, was if they preview the home and sample rugs in order to see if they fit for the spaces. Luckily for her, this is common practice at Zuma. “We work with interior designers on a daily basis and love helping them find rugs for their projects,” Elyse says. “Hailey does her own design

so we worked with her directly on selecting rugs for her beautiful home.” The process from that initial conversation was pretty simple. Hailey sent Elyse and Zuhal her dimensions and what rug styles and colors she prefers; the ladies proceeded to load up their amazing options and headed to Hailey’s home for some trial and error. Together, they went through the selections for each room to find the perfect fit. Hailey also visited the Zuma warehouse in Mt. Pleasant to view their entire collection. Turkey. Each rug is a piece of art and it’s crucial to properly care for these pieces. Regular cleaning is necessary to ensure they last a long time. “We recommend not using a beater vacuum but using a floor setting instead to clean and maintain the rugs,” Elyse explains. “Professional cleaning is great every few years.” Elyse also notes that Zuma has the capability to repair damaged rugs. If Hailey hadn’t been able to find everything she needed from the current inventory, Elyse and Zuhal have the ability to work with their team members in Turkey to find the perfect fit and have it shipped to their warehouse in Mt. Rental Property Charm Moving with comfort and ease throughout the space was of utmost importance when designing the cabinetry for this Edisto Beach rental property.
T
his rental property on Edisto Beach was an investment for the sisters who purchased it. As realtors they had a pretty good idea of what they were looking for when it came to design, but they knew they couldn’t do it on their own. Their builder and friend Jonathan Ghant of Jonathan Ghant Homes + Construction introduced the pair to the team at Mount Pleasant Kitchen and Bath and the project took off. “We start with an overall description of the feel the owners want,” begins Peter Munzer, owner of Mount Pleasant Kitchen and Bath. “We talk about how they live, how they entertain, how many

chefs are in the kitchen, whether or not they have pets and/or kids, etc. I want to know everyone’s expectations and how they’re going to use the kitchens and bathrooms.” In this case, it was important that this home be usable for the sisters but was also rentable for when they weren’t staying at the house. Peter notes his team always starts with the lifestyle and function of the home. Once that’s determined in that initial conversation, they begin picking flooring options. The flooring is the foundation of the overall look, feel, and function of the space. After the flooring is nailed down, the Mount Pleasant Kitchen and Bath team moves their clients to

This step also includes appliance selection. “We build a kitchen around the particular equipment they want to cook on,” Peter explains. “Our design creates zones for the owners; we want everyone to feel comfortable so they can move with ease in a space.” In this particular home, budget was a big concern since it was an investment property. “We wanted it to look fantastic on a budget,” Peter recalls. In order to achieve this, the team looked at the multiple levels of cabinetry Mount Pleasant Kitchen and Bath offers. They have options that are more economical without compromising quality. Shut Out The Storm A home without hurricane protection is vulnerable to damage from windborne debris.
W
ithout hurricane impact rated shutters, homeowners run the risk of avoidable wind damage when a storm comes through. This home has hurricane protection installed in the form of several colonial and Bahama shutters along the front and sides and motorized rolldowns on the back porch, as well as accordions in selected areas around the house. Windward Shutters has been protecting homes in the Lowcountry against hurricane damage since 1996 and this Mt. Pleasant project was no different. Their goal of service is to fortify your home’s existing structure

by reinforcing areas vulnerable to severe weather conditions. Take care of the outside of your home like you do the inside and install shutters to serve as a buffer between your home’s exterior and the elements. For these Mt. Pleasant homeowners, this was their first time purchasing shutters. a paint color that contrasts with the home’s exterior in order to really make it pop. The shutters featured on the front porch are painted a classic red whereas the accordion shutters and the motorized rolldowns are white to seamlessly blend into the white trim for optimum beauty. During the design process, it is important the plan meets the homeowners’ aesthetic as well as their practical needs for safety. “The initial meeting with the homeowners is always the most important so they can carefully consider which products will best fit each and every
window and door.” This is in order to maximize the home’s fortification while also complementing the home’s historic Charleston architecture. Tim mentions this home lends itself perfectly to exterior shutters because of its traditional layout. Homes of this design tend to look bare without shutters. Classic colonial shutters were installed on French double doors on the front porch, “making it even more welcoming” he says. This Southern home features ample porch living space to enjoy the seasonal views of the ever changing intracoastal waterway marsh on
which it sits. This project was finished earlier than planned with minimal setbacks. Two openings presented clearance issues so the team consulted with the homeowners and discussed their alternative options. Good Bones A strong foundation makes for a sturdy home. See how 84 Lumber and Fox Creek Builders made it possible for these new Charleston homeowners.
I
n a few short months this Mt. Pleasant family won’t have the only home on the block. Builder Fox Creek Homes has plans to further develop the street with help from local building material supplier 84 Lumber. This brand new home features quality framing materials from 84 Lumber as well as JeldWen Siteline windows and a solid mahogany wood front door. Upon entry the eye is drawn up to the golden chandelier and vaulted white cedar poplar ceiling. Golden light fixtures from Charleston Lighting and Interiors were installed throughout the home for cohesive warmth.

The living room features a custom shiplap wall and wooden mantle constructed from a salvaged piece of wood found in the homeowner’s home town of Hershey, PA. This personal element adds a unique and meaningful angle to the overall design. The builders worked with Jilco Kitchen and Bath to provide the kitchen cabinets and metallic hardware for this open concept layout. The cabinetry and backsplash tile pair beautifully with the wood heavy accents in the living room and entryway. Lighting was also important to these

homeowners who work from home. All lighting fixtures follow the same gold concept which warms the space for an ideal work environment. Jack Holt of 84 Lumber, recalls how a lot of recent project plans this season had become more of a challenge than before. The home building industry certainly has felt the effects the pandemic had on the global supply chain, but luckily for 84 Lumber, providing builders with supplies and material is their business. Most job material is available to be delivered and worked with as soon as ground breaks. At times, special
orders need to be carefully placed for custom jobs which require more attention to detail. “You have to make sure all of the details are correct before ordering to avoid any challenges in the installation project.” Because of the little trouble it took to source this project’s materials, the job was completed on time. According to the homeowner, there was only one change order for the entire building process which was to add a frosted metal barn door to an upstairs bedroom creating a semiprivate office space with natural light. This home also features a balcony with a porch swing off of the master
bedroom and a grand closet room attached to a laundry room for easy access. The homeowner, jokes her closet is her 'cloffice', a closet and an office featuring a marble top vanity that doubles as a computer desk. A Modern Twist on Traditional Style This downtown project is one of five remodels on Sheppard Street
T
here was a sense of urgency when completing this five-part project on historic Sheppard Street. Prior to the renovation, interstate drivers were greeted with rotten wood and caution tape as they approached King Street. Builder Travis Arnett of Arnett Custom Homes explains how “working with the challenges of historic homes present an exciting opportunity to make something even more unique and expose its history through modern 21st century design." Vacant and unsafe, deemed by the City of Charleston, neither residential nor commercial building plans could be made considering the existing conditions. Although most of the house had to be replaced, discoveries during demolition surprised the builders with an additional opportunity to get creative. “Once hidden, historical architecture was discovered and implemented into the design layout about halfway through,” Travis mentions. Builders tore through layers

of walls exposing fine detail and salvaging pieces of the original wood which was refinished and used to create the solid beams along the vaulted ceiling. From top to bottom, this custom renovation includes charming and modern updates while still maintaining the old Charleston feel. “One thing I like [about this project] is that these are highly visible through the crosstown that we basically took old run down buildings and made them brand new and useful," says Garth Premak of Maner Builder Supply. Wood from the home's original structure was repurposed and used to create solid beams which allowed Arnett Custom Homes to vault the ceiling instead of creating a traditional flat ceiling. The team reframed an entire wall and nearly half of the heart pine floor with the help of Elegant Flooring. A benefit of heart pine is that it darkens with time, much like the original flooring would have. Garth explains how you can tell the difference between old and new wood flooring by the

width of the panels, if the color doesn’t give it away. Historically, boards were cut much thinner than they are now and tend to have a red/orange/brown look to them as compared to the light yellow beige of new pine. The original interior trim was refinished and double primed with “few blemishes and defects, something hard to come by” Travis says. The hallway features solid core shaker doors installed by Maner Builder Supply, which Travis explains were selected for the “style, quality, and durability of a solid wood door.” This is just one example of how this team makes an effort to preserve historical integrity during a remodel with modern adaptations. The kitchen features marble countertops installed by Zimpel Granite and Marble and backsplash by Melcer Tile. In one of the three bedrooms, Maner installed built-in bunk beds and desks to accompany the built-in

bookshelves in each of the rooms. Cable railing installed by Arnett Custom Homes ties it all together. Nearly torn down to the foundation, 90 Sheppard Street presented challenges that changed the course of the design plan. Originally, Arnett was to install a flat ceiling but Garth recalls about halfway through the project deciding to repurpose the home’s salvaged wood to serve as the beams for a vaulted ceiling, a unique and historical architectural element. A new pavilion in the outdoor common area was built to serve as a gathering place for guests. Cultivated Outdoor Oasis
This Lowcountry homeowner bought a home in the same neighborhood he grew up in and since his family is still in the area, knew he needed to create an outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.
I
t probably gets redundant hearing people say this all the time, but life in the Lowcountry means enjoying our outdoor spaces nearly year round. For Randall Carter, he knew buying a home in the same neighborhood he grew up in meant lots of gatherings were going to be held at his home, so he wanted to take advantage of the wonderful weather we experience and create an outdoor space everyone would use. Randall is the general manager and lead designer at Palm Casual, a family owned and operated outdoor furniture store; he knew it was crucial to invest in quality pieces that could withstand kids, dogs, and other family members. Randall worked with his interior

designer and pool designer to make sure all the items he selected would flow together. “All of the furniture that we picked were very carefully chosen specifically for this house,” Randall notes. “We wanted to ensure this would be a space we were going to be able to use for a long time.” The assistant manager at Palm Casual was very involved in helping Randall and his wife, Jessica get the best products for their home. “Working at and running the store can sometimes be challenging to then come home and work on your own project,” Randall notes. “Having Jake MacLean, the assistant manager at Palm Casual, on board was big because he was helping guide us and reassure our choices.”

As they were selecting pieces, color scheme was a big consideration. Randall was looking for something classic that wouldn’t go out of style. They also wanted to incorporate a lot of different texture. In their home, teak, wicker, and cast aluminum were all paired together in the varying outdoor spaces creating a different dynamic for each area. Palm Casual’s outdoor furniture is made of 100 percent resin wicker and has an aluminum framing so it doesn’t rust over time. The cushions are made of Sunbrella so they can be cleaned with bleach. Palm Casual also offers a lifetime service warranty so if cushions need to be restuffed, or wicker needs to be repaired, the Palm Casual team will come back out and help restore the piece. There are different spaces set up throughout the yard. Sling teak loungers were used in the sunning area and composite adirondacks on the sun ledge of the pool which are very low maintenance. On the paver patio, an outdoor dining set was placed for the kids to come out and snack after school. Deep seating is offered in the middle of the yard with a cozy sofa and chairs. Finally, in the back corner there is the firepit area with a curved sofa and adirondacks. Randall and his wife also have what they call their "four seasons" room which leads to the backyard. Palm Casual’s wicker collection is used in this area creating a comfy, indoor/outdoor environment where the family lounges and entertains frequently. “We wanted to be able to sit in the yard and watch the kids from wherever we are,” Randall notes. “We achieved that and with this being the first backyard project we’ve done on our own from start to finish is so rewarding.” ✴

his beachfront home on Kiawah Island is stunning from the moment you walk through the doors. They partnered with Russ Pritchard and his team at The Audio Warehouse to elevate the way they live. An incredible media room is just off the kitchen. Vast windows are covered with Lutron Shades which paired with Lutron Home Works lighting control allow the homeowners to create day and night scenes for entertaining, sports, and movie time. The Bowers and Wilkins high performance speakers are painted to disappear in the ceiling, and the Bowers and Wilkins Subwoofer is built into the custom cabinet and vents out on the side. Lutron Warm Dim LED fixtures and tape at the bar created a fun feel to the space. Everything in the space is easy to control with the Savant Remote which also gives access to shades and lights for an easy user experience. The large, open living room has multiple sitting groups and uses. This space also uses Lutron’s Warm Dim Adjustable LED fixtures that produce bright light for standard use

These adjustable fixtures allow light to be aimed where needed. “In this case we are able to provide proper lighting on the dining table without traditional overhead lighting while enjoying the openness and ambiance of the second floor dome,” explains Russ. “This home was one of the first Beta programs to use Lutron’s newest Eco Lighting System which allows us to create multiple groupings with architectural downlights for different uses compared to traditional lighting which can only be grouped by the way it was wired during construction.”
Russ points out one advantage of addressable lighting is the ability to rearrange light groupings after you’ve lived in the space. In this home, trimless fixtures were used in many of the public spaces to maintain a clean ceiling; these fixtures are also growing in popularity due to their minimalistic aesthetic. Once again, Lutron shades are used to manage the glare and solar effects of the sunrise in the mornings and provide privacy in the evenings. Both floors in this home use automated shades to protect areas with high sun exposure from solar fade. Finally, the entertainment in the living area is
provided by flush mounted Bowers and Wilkens high quality ceiling speakers painted to match the ceiling along with the Sony 65” flat screen over the fireplace. As we move into the master bath, a unique feature was presented to the Audio Warehouse team. “Managing both light and privacy with a mirror floating in front of the window. This was one of my favorite window treatments in the home,” Russ recalls. “The window casings were customized to hide the shades in pockets when not in use with the ability to be lowered behind the mirror at each vanity when privacy or glare were an issue.” CH+D • Winter 2022 • 139

Russ and his team installed a Lutron Home Works Lighting system throughout the home allowing them to replace banks of switches with single gang keypads with the light’s name engraved on the buttons along with back lighting for easy visibility day or night. The keypads are located in convenient locations throughout the home. They allow control of both groups, sometimes referred to as scenes as well as individual lights,” Russ says. It’s common to always have a favorite setting for multiple lights in a space to create the desired feel. This can be saved to a single button for easy operation.

Global control was provided throughout the home with the Savant touch screens located in several key locations throughout the home. “From these locations you can view any of the outdoor security cameras, select and play any selection of music to one room or create groups of rooms on the fly,” Russ explains. “You manage lighting scenes for multiple rooms or access global control to launch popular scenes such as ‘Entertain’ which might turn on lights in various areas at predetermined levels and start your favorite jazz playlists as your dinner guests arrive.” Savant’s power is limitless; it even provides remote access and control of all lights, shades, and entertainment
systems in case you forgot to turn something off. If this all sounds complicated to use, Russ insists the system is very easy to use, stating if you can use an iPhone, you already know how to operate the system. John invites us in to talk about the design, his successful culinary career, his childhood in the Lone Star state, and what’s next. Mueller, big names in the Texas barbecue scene, to help them open. “A lot goes into launching a restaurant, so I learned a great deal about all that heavy lifting.” After working with Aaron and LeAnn, John was invited to Charleston to participate in a barbecue and bourbon trip. “I was really blown away by the community and how much people loved food here,” he proclaims. “It seemed like such a welcoming and fun place to live, not to mention the great weather, and I thought it was time for a change so I decided to take the leap.” Without the help from his Lewis Barbecue partners, John wouldn’t have the success he’s had. Their contributions made the process easier and helped him build the restaurant and staff it with people who understood John’s vision. “It’s so rewarding to see how smoothly it operates now. I’m really proud of what we created.” Over the years, Lewis Barbecue has become known for their brisket. is starting with a really high quality product and giving it plenty of time to smoke.” In the last couple of years, John has tested the waters with other concepts. “At the end of the day, I like to cook what I like to eat,” he says. Taking that into consideration, John opened JL’s Burgers, inspired by his love of a green chile burger; a delicacy in El Paso and Hatch. Rancho Lewis is inspired by the border food John ate as a kid. “I couldn’t find it here in Charleston so I thought it’d be a great thing to add to the food scene.” Next in John’s restaurant empire is a second location of Lewis Barbecue in Greenville coming in 2022. “Making the decision to launch in another area was a big one, but the Greenville community has been so welcoming.”

ark & Grove, formerly known as The Park Cafe, reopened their new concept during the summer of 2020. Owner Karalee Nielsen Fallert wanted to create a space that was a bit more dramatic and moody. Design elements worked together to create an atmosphere of a chic French bistro or New York cafe. Art also played a huge role in the redesign and is highlighted with wall sconces in one section of the dining room that also features a stunning green grassy wallpaper.

hen Corrie and Shuai Wang opened Jackrabbit Filly in the thriving Park Circle neighborhood, it was important that they create a welcoming ambiance that would become a popular neighborhood spot. Park Circle was the perfect place for the Wangs because it was just outside the hubbub of downtown but still very central. Corrie and Shuai gave their restaurant a story by filling it with gifts from employees and regulars along with thrift store finds. These fun finds all pair together for a “grandma’s basement but cooler” vibe; a patron once said to Corrie and she knew they’d gotten the atmosphere just right.

The Longboard Sullivan’s Island
A
collaboration between Cortney Bishop Design and Beau Clowney Architects resulted in a stunning new Sullivan’s Island eatery, The Longboard. The former pizza joint was transformed into a tropical space, intentionally designed to fit into its surroundings with a mix of island style and traditional Lowcountry architectural charm. Bleached shiplap walls and painted white beams over the main dining room create a bungalow feel in the indoor-outdoor restaurant. A U-shaped bar stands at the center of the dining room and above the bar hangs a deep turquoise Almond longboard that adds to the beachy atmosphere. Custom elements such as the floor tile by Eskayel for Cle Tile and the sapele wood tables by Brooks Custom Woodworks along with lighting fixtures by Allied Maker complement other design elements, and again help bring the beachy ambiance to life.
