A season of victory, and loss. After a broken leg derailed his 2011 Championship campaign, Robbie Bugden was fighting fit and hungry for his third New Zealand Superbike Championship title in 2012. Despite a few DNF’s of his own, Bugden was in great form after his regular gig in the Australian Superbike Championship, and took the title with a race to spare at Taupo. While long-term rival Andrew Stroud was always a threat, his uncharacteristic crashes at Ruapuna and Taupo showed just how fortunes had swapped between the two fastest riders in the Championship. Unfortunately, crashes would overshadow the season, affecting more than just points tables and trophy wins. While we experienced all the excitement and suspense we’ve come to expect from our national Championship, we also felt the pain from losing of one of our mates. Cam Jones’ unexplained crash during warm-up on Sunday at Levels had a sobering effect on the whole paddock. Transported from the circuit in critical condition, Cam would fight on in hospital for another three and a half weeks before leaving us for good on 10th February. Our youngest ever national Champion (he won the 125GP title in 2008), Cam was an integral part of the New Zealand Superbike Championship family. He was well liked, is sorely missed, and many riders now wear his signature #26 as a tribute to their fallen friend. In 600cc Supersport, Dennis Charlett fought hard all season and took home another title ahead of Glen Skachill and Josh McGrath. But the standings may have looked very different had Supersport front-runners Jaden Hassan and John Ross not missed a couple of rounds each due to seperate accidents suffered outside the Championship. Meanwhile, 2011 125GP champ Jake Lewis won the 600cc Superstock title over Johnny Small (our 2011 ProTwin champion), before heading to race in the European Junior Cup and 600cc Superstock Championships. Glen Williams was dominant in Superlite (again), and Bryan Hill looked set for a win in Pro Twin 650 until he hit mechanical troubles at Hampton Downs; the trophy eventually taken home by Robbie Stokes. Amirul Hafiq Azmi won seven of the nine South Island 125GP races before heading home to Malaysia, leaving Daniel Mettam to hold off Seth Devereux in the North Island. Seth was fortunate to collect the 125GP title after Mettam was prevented from racing in the last race of the season, but as quickly as he gained a title, Devereux lost another, with the ProLite 250 trophy going to Sam Croft by only two points.
