Introduction With a record ninth New Zealand Superbike Championship title under his belt, there’s no denying that Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud is the number one road racer in the country. Despite a heroic comeback from Queensland rider Robbie Bugden who broke a leg at the Cemetery Circuit a month before the Championship kicked off in Timaru, Stroud dominated the 2011 season, taking seven wins from nine races. Others were taken by Sloan Frost in horrendous conditions at Teretonga, while hometown favourite Craig Shirriffs won at Manfeild. Stroud and teammate Dennis Charlett proved that experience are more than a match for youth with Dennis’ win in 600cc Supersport, while 600cc Superstock (a low spend category) provided some of the best racing of the season, with Midge Smart and Jaden Hassan finishing dead equal on points after battling each other all season long. Countback saw Midge take the title at Manfeild, celebrating with a superb “robot” on the tyres at Splash. 2010 125GP champion Alastair Hoogenboezem was one of many riders moving up to 600’s from 125’s, leaving Jake Lewis to deservedly take the 125GP title despite pressure from teammate Avalon Biddle and Australian youngster Josh McGrath. Jason Easton’s magic workshop delivered an Aprilia engined/ Tigcraft framed machine to take him to a title win in Superlite (formerly F3), while past 600cc champion John Hepburn mentored Johnny Small to a convincing win in ProTwin; we should keep an eye on this pairing next season. Conflict within the Sidecar ranks saw them race at just two meetings this season, but again, Steve Bron and Dennis Simonsen were unbeatable on their LCR rig. Meanwhile the new Pro Lite 250 class was won by Seth Devereux, using just one set of tyres! The championship continues to evolve and improve in the face of a flat economy, and we’re assured of more great racing next season. Will we see Andrew Stroud make it to title number ten?
