editor’s note It may feel a little bit early to be putting our focus on the Relay for Life fashions (considering that the brunt of the event is in July) but we wanted to help get everyone into gear for one of Second Life’s most significant celebrations. This isn’t just a socially significant event, but the SLRFL has contributed immensely to fashion in Second Life. It is arguably the most important event in our virtual fashion world, and has steadily grown in importance in the past three years. A lot of the credit can go to Pixels In Pink, one of the earliest fashion-focussed teams that made a big splash in 2006 with a slew of designers as members. Fast forward to 2008 and things have multiplied, leading to fashion shows and epic expos. The best part if it? Every L$ spent on Relay for Life fashions is practically remorse free. What’s better than looking great and contributing to an extremely important cause? Also upcoming is Second Life’s 5th Birthday. While I’ve never really been one for parties (I just recently spent a good half of my 22nd birthday sleeping in and playing with Photoshop) I can’t help but look back at the technological leaps and bounds SL has made since its inception. Can you imagine now if we still had to live without mesh hairstyles, default skins, custom animations, sculptie prims, and even without flexi prims...? And let’s not forget the impact that Windlight has made on the way we see the world around our avatars. Wether you’re an oldbie, a newbie, or somewhere in between, you can’t ignore the progress of SL’s fashion world, and all this in only 5 short years. I can’t help but ask, where will we be (and what will we look like) at SL’s 10th birthday celebration?

Vernette Jumpsuit n’ Gown Vernette is a jumpsuit and a gown in a single outfit. It has a 70s style with a glittered texture. I truly like the versatility and the concept. You can find it in lime and pink. The outfit includes top, pants, prim sash and prim sheer leg cuffs for the jumpsuit. For the gown you just need to remove the sash, switch to the glitch pants and wear the prim skirt. The skirt comes with a bow on the back. The stilettos are included with the outfit and they are textured to match it. 24 | Second Style Magazine

Hannah Hannah is a very cute casual outfit. With a black and white combination you can never go wrong. The outfit consists on a top with a lace detail, a cropped mini jacket with a prim knock and a prim skirt with a flower pattern that includes a small bow. This is also perfect for mix and matching with any piece of your wardrobe.

Forda Fairlane has been designing in SL for about a year and a half and ng for 3 years. Their inspiration comes from working together as they have different styles. The outfits come to individual styles. Haute Style and Co can be described as classy upscale unique pieces fun to wear.

Savannah Savannah has a more sophisticated touch. This gorgeous dress in vivid colours has a Spring feel. It comes with two length versions for the skirt and in both there is a flower detail as well as the gorgeous flower pattern. The shoes are part of the outfit and they are textured with the same texture as the prim skirt. The long skirt (on the right) gives the dress a quite a babydoll look. It would be nice to see one more version of the skirt in a longer length.

Dangerous in pink Dangerous in Pink is the outfit created for the RFL. As most of the RFL outfits, it’s in a vivid pink. It is a long dress with a top, system skirt and prim flexis for the skirt. The details in the neck look like a necklace and they are gorgeous. The dress doesn’t come with glitch pants to wear underneath because its side is opened on the left.

men’s corner By Ryan Darragh Chances are that you’ve at least heard of Relay For Life (www.relayforlife. org), the annual overnight fundraising walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is designed to further awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures; to remember those who have been lost to cancer and celebrate survivors; and to raise money for ongoing cure research. The Second Life embodiment of this effort is Relay For Life of Second Life (www.rflofsl.org). In 2007, through the efforts of 40 teams RFL of SL raised a grand total of over L$118,000! One fundraising method is supported by inworld designers and content creators who donate original creations—anything from clothing and accessories to vehicles, buildings and furniture—to be made available for a donation to the cause. Some of these designs may be created exclusively for and available only during the event. This month I’m featuring just a handful of designs for men, in a variety of styles, which prove you can be stylish while supporting a worthy cause. Please note that all “prices” are donation amounts that go directly to benefit Relay For Life. Some of these items may also be found at other locations in addition to the ones I’ve noted here. For casual wear, it’s hard to beat the wide range of men’s fashions by Jesseaitui Petion. His V-top tees (L$100 each) benefiting RFL of SL 2008 are textured and shaded for unisex wear, come in a variety of colors and feature different themed designs. Here you see “Can Cure” in Berry and “Hope” in Deep sky. The rich colors are strong and clear, and the bold graphics are easy to read without zooming in. These shirts come on the jacket layer for comfortable untucked wear. Available at Aitui (Aitui 200, 182, 23). The Cowboy Hat for a Cure (L$50) by Tawney Bian may be just one sculpted prim, but it’s handsomely shaped and touch scripted for easy resizing. The dark grey texture of the hat itself is stylized rather than highly photorealistic—it could be leather or felted wool—and the classic two-tone hatband catches the eye with its smart styling. The front of the crown features a bright pink ribbon design, the international symbol of breast cancer awareness. Available at Haute Style & Co. (Haute Couture 151, 188, 22). If gothic designs are more your style, the Avenging Angel necklace for men (L$499) by BastChild Lotus may fit right into your wardrobe. BastChild has used highly detailed primwork to create an elaborate ironwork cross, studded with dark rubies and suspended on delicate chain links. The central ruby glints occasionally with subtle and actually very attractive 54 | Second Style Magazine

bling. This piece is a limited edition design available exclusively during Relay For Life 2008—gold and silver versions are available for purchase in the shop. Available at LaPointe & BastChild Designs (Evocative 34, 153, 24). For formal occasions, consider the “Hope” Tails Tux (L$400) by swaffette Firefly. This classy ensemble includes a formal dress shirt, vest, and jacket with flexi tails. The crisp white shirt sets off the luxurious double-breasted vest, which has been fashioned boldly in pink as a symbol of cancer awareness. You can accessorize with either the matching prim bowtie or the sculpted cravat, secured very properly with a silver cravat pin. A gold watch chain completes the look and coordinates nicely with the vest’s decorative buttons. Available at SF Design (Innisfree 134, 49, 538). Summer’s just around the corner, which means it’s time to break out the beachwear. Posy Trudeau’s new Retro Swim Trunks (L$150 each) come in three different designs: Cowabunga, Hang Ten, and Island Boy (my favorite, shown here). The baggy legs are sculpted prims textured to match the pantslayer trunks, and for extra realism there’s a prim string tie. You could wear the trunks without the baggy prim legs, but honestly I can’t imagine why you would want to. I noticed that, for the ladies, Posy has also created bikinis and prim beach bags with a variety of summertime supplies. Available at Available at PiP City (PiP City 128, 128, 25). This selection barely begins to scratch the surface of the wide range of designs being offered in return for a donation to Relay For Life. Be on the lookout for the distinctive purpleand-white RFL vendors used for these items. Many designers have vendors out in their stores for their own items, but you can also use inworld Search (look for “RFL” and “Relay For Life”) to find collaborative shopping areas featuring a variety of items from different designers. An expanded version of this article will be published on the Men’s Second Style fashion blog at www.second-man.com. Be sure to look for it! Ryan is also wearing: “Advance” skin, “Sway” hair and Classic Jeans by Jesseaitui Petion (Aitui). FORM skin by Zabita Assia (FORM). Carnal Fiber suit by kaia Ennui (Nocturnal Threads). Surf’s Up tanks by Antonia Marat (Artilleri). Kaimana Sea and Shore men’s jewelry by Caliah Lyon (Muse). NEW & NOTABLE By Phoenix Chapman Hi everyone! I am so happy to be with Second Style magazine and writing on what’s new and hot from the last month. Spring has sprung, summer is nearly here in the Northern hemisphere and the grid is dressing the part and feeling the virtual warmth on their faces. We have been blessed with some beautiful things lately to dress up our pixilated alter egos, and new and old designers alike are rocking my wardrobe. I’ve rounded up some of the latest “musthaves” that every fashionista should have in her inventory. The Relay for Life 2008 drive has been a roaring success in Second Life, and Tuli has created not one, but two specially made outfits for the cause. Her first contribution first debuted for

58 | Second Style Magazine

the RFL Clothing Fair, and after about a month or so of seeing it virtually everywhere I went, Tuli released her second outfit for RFL ; a special colour option of her latest outfit, Pennie, which has a gorgeous plum-based floral skirt with a button-down blouse and prim cuffs. For only L$250, you can add this beautiful ensemble to your wardrobe and contribute to a great cause at the same time. Armidi is well-known for its finger on the pulse of what’s new and hot in fashion. When they released the first part of their Italian inspired homage, Gisaci Vacanze, late last month, every fashionista on the grid stormed their Sim , braved the lag and started clicking away madly to buy everything in sight. Or was that just me? There are so many pieces that should be on every woman’s shopping list, but the

perfect fit for summer is the Buone Vacanze shorts outfit, which comes in so many colour combinations, you’ll find it won’t be easy to pick your favourite.

stunning. Though I had tried on every demo offered previously, it actually wasn’t until they were all retextured that I finally plowed ahead and purchased many of the fatpacks, and they are worth every Linden. On the left is the rereleased former limited edition freebie, Loelle, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been wearing I’ve been stopped in my travels with inquiries on where I got it. One of my favourites from Maitreya has to be the Eva hairstyles though, which you can buy in three different options, depending on the style of bangs you prefer.

Siddean Munro of SLink seems to be able to create anything, from shoes to skins to clothes, and the dress I’m donning here is the newly released Floral Sundress. I love how many options are included with this dress, and one thing it has that not a lot of other clothing does is a sculpted bodice. This dress can take you in style to any event this summer, from a garden wedding to a simple day of shopping.

I think it’s fairly well-known that I am a girl who loves her shoes. I’m coordinating the 2008 SL Footwear Expo, the first such expo of its kind, and I have hundreds of pairs of shoes in every conceivable style. So when Erpla Prieto of Periquita came out with her Funny Girl flats, I wasted no time hoofing it over there to snare myself a fatpack. Many shoe designers have come out with flats in the past several months, echoing the RL trend, but until now, I hadn’t seen pointy-toed flats. These are perfect for little summer dresses, or skinny jeans, or even to throw on with a bikini.

The talented Maitreya designers, Onyx LeShelle and Beauvoir Rousselot, recently revamped their hair textures and the new textures are absolutely

Summer is gearing up to be hot, hot, hot, and these are just some of this month’s must-haves of any well-rounded closet.

Tigerlily Koi By Iris Ophelia

Second Style: So Tigerlily, it’s a bit strange that it’s taken us this long to interview you! Can you tell our readers a little bit about your history in SL? Tigerlily Koi: Sure, there’s not a whole lot to it actually. I started almost two years ago, and came in trying to figure out how it all worked. I spent a LOT of time in classes the first few months, and eventually became a Linden Lab approved Instructor (obviously, that was a while ago). But after a lot of classes, I realized I wasn’t very good at a whole lot and tried doing hair, and somehow it worked. TK: So I made my first hair in a sandbox, out of plywood. Which actually doesn’t make a halfbad blonde. SS laughs. TK: It really was a last resort, and thankfully, hair is a lot less actual building skill than creativity. So it came kind of naturally once I got the basics of building down. Textures were a different story though. *laughs* SS: Absolutely. TK: I spent forever it seems like on textures, and refining them, and adding new colors. At the time I couldn’t find my way around photoshop with a tour guide. So it’s been a lot of learning as I go. TK: I’m not really very exciting I’m afraid lol SS: I beg to differ! What’s the evolution of you store Calla been, and what are your plans for its short term/long term future? TK: Well it started in a tiny skybox over Haedon’s first piece of land, and I think within two months, I’d built up 10 styles or so and had a shop open. I had a few mall spaces like everyone does in the beginning. Haedon was the store builder, and I was the hair maker. Eventually I convinced her to try tackling hair, and she kept at it and started making styles she was happy with. We had to move to a bigger place, and I found a parcel in a

Dreamland sim that was water on 2 sides, way bigger than I thought we’d ever fill. And within about 4 months, it was too small! TK: At which point we got an island, and February makes a year there. After this long together, and trying to fit into the same box, Haedon and I are going to be doing our own thing, and I have huge plans and hopes for Calla. Short term, I’ll be opening mid-June, and long term I’ll keep plugging along as always. I’ve got some really innovative things in the works, and much of it will be ready soon. TK: I’ve also handed over the Men’s department to my brother, Griptape, and he’ll be a totally separate division focusing on men’s styles. SS: I’ve heard that you’re making some pretty interesting contribution to SLRFL 08, would you like to tell us a bit about your plans on the philanthropic front? *smiles* TK: I have an amazing team, and have been so blessed to work with them! They’re all designers, and of course very creative people! This weekend we have a Prom, and that’s going to be a whole lot of fun! We’ve got several Prom King & Prom Queen, as well as Prom Crashers King & Queen crown sets that will be auctioned off, and each one is a one-of-a-kind. We also have a RFL store where all of the team has put up some of their RFL items. TK: And we’re hoping to be able to pull off a Designer’s Closet yard sale before the end of the Relay SS: Ooh a Designer’s Closet yard sale is a pretty original concept, want to elaborate? TK: Sure! We all have a ton of things floating around our inventories, and so much of it is things we’ve gotten just to shoot ads in. I’m sure the designers who create clothes have a lot of things sitting around that they’ve either not released, or stopped carrying. This is just kind Continued Continuedononpage page6464> > Second Style Magazine | 63

Interview

> Continued from page 63

of a way to clean up the inventories, and help raise funds. I actually bought a shameful amount of things from Last Call before it closed, and I bought duplicates of a lot of them just to hang onto and put towards the Relay fundraising. TK: And having been here for a few years, a lot of us own things from amazing designers that have moved on to other things, and I think it’s a shame to be hoarding them locked away in our inventories when we can put them to good use for RFL SS: Absolutely fabulous, I can see that being wildly successful! So what is your favourite part of Second Life? TK: The endless possibility. If you can dream it, you can create it. SS: And your least favourite? TK: Aside from broken asset servers? I think it would have to be when things aren’t working, when the grid has stability issues, and everything comes to a grinding halt. It can really put a damper on a good creative burst.

64 | Second Style Magazine

SS: I can agree with you on that. If you could add one feature to SL to make your life easier, what would it be? TK: The ability to cut up sculpts. SS: Ooh good one. TK: I wish they’d become like a regular prim once made. I understand that can probably never happen, but it doesn’t stop me from trying to manipulate one every time. *laughs* SS: Do you have any other creators in SL that you admire or whose work you love? TK: I have a whole list of them honestly. I think since being a part of the designer community, I’ve really come to understand that every one of us has our own strengths. I couldn’t make clothes to save my life! So those who can, I really admire. Nyte’n’Day’s always been one of my favorites, Mischief, Nicky Ree. Total Betty and Icing are so *me.* But I think every single creator has a talent I really admire. Anyone who Continued on page 67 >

works with tiny prims totally has my heartfelt respect! Those things will drive a person insane really fast! SS: Absolutely! Do you have any messages for your current and future fans/our readers? TK: It’s so weird to think I have fans... TK: You stumped me. SS: You certainly have fans! *laughs*

TK: I think I’d just want to tell them how appreciative I am that they’re here. We’re all a part of this community together, and everyone of us brings something unique with us. I’m proud to be a part of it all. TK: I think the fan thing always startles me, because I just feel like anyone else! SS: That’s how most designers feel. I think the day you start thinking you’re a rock star is the day to retire, in SL. TK: Amen! TK: When my head gets too big, kick me out. *laughs* SS: Well from the sounds of things we probably don’t have to worry about that, you’re very grounded. TK: Aww thank you! I try to be, I’ve been blessed with a lot of amazing people in my life, who are far better than I am. Keeps me down to earth. *smiles*

fashion finds By Scarlett Niven Warmer weather means more outdoor activity! The long days of sun, warm air and outdoor festivals and events, makes almost everyone feel more alive and desire spending more time out and about. Casual, comfortable dress is the norm this time of year. Lucky for me many of the stores in SL™ have released massive amounts of season appropriate wear that I will see me through the balmy warm days and cool summer nights.

My first look is perfect for dinner or casual cocktails on a friend’s yacht. Wonderful neutral colors injected with a doses of sunny yellow keeps this look sophisticated yet fun. The Lima trench coat jacket in Crema from Armidi with the Dan De Ville blouse in yellow underneath paired with light and flowy Ultimate Tango silk wide leg pants keep the look effortless. Accessories include the statement making Art Deco earrings from Paper Couture, the Gordie leather bag in Yellow from Armidi, the wood coin ring worn on the index finger from Creamshop and the eye catching high wedge sandals in brown from

Lulywood. Completing the look is a casual and chic high ponytail that is the ETD Gwen style in blonde. Pretty dresses are a staple in my SL and RL wardrobe during the warmer months. This look has a decided blend of the 40s and 50s in style. This lovely dress of silk and tulle called Fate in light blue is from Bianca F., and is patterned with a butterfly motif reminiscent of a Monet painting. I’ve added a lace jacket in white from Bare Rose on the undershirt layer and Yip’s

prim Papillion’s covering the chest area. Shoes are the Chichi pumps in Cream paired with light blue short gloves from Fleur and Snood hair from Curio in white blonde with the lace hairnet colored to light blue to match the dress. You’ll be pool-side perfect and sexy chic in the O-ring bikini in white from Second Apparel topped with the colorful Antigua Caribbean cover up by Digit Darkes. By Graciana McMillan Wow! My first write up on the recent runway action of the month. I have to say Justine is a hard lady to follow, and I hope I can come close to providing you with as much valuable fashion runway news as she has done! 1.So to start, on May 3rd Atlantis Modeling Agency presented the designs of Polish up, Bellissima, Nuclear Boutique and Nyte and Day. A wide range of designs were presented from casual to more formal attire. What I liked about the outfit created by Nyte Caligari of Nyte and Day, modeled by Isabel Brocco was the eye catching color of the top. It just popped out and made you pay attention. The entire outfit was composed of the Regular Stitch Jeans with the Teal Plica Shirt. A very casual look with a low ride jeans and a gathered sexy tank, in that color that says, “Notice me!” 2.Later that same day, I hopped on over to the Kmadd production of Frozen Turquoise Valentine, a collection by Valenttina Carfagno. There wasn’t much about this show I didn’t like. For example, the Ballerina Drama, modeled by Fann Hyun, is a classy addition to any wardrobe. The feathers on the boa are such a wonderful texture, and bring out a soft delicate look. 4.The final piece from the FTV show is the City of Gold set, model Poptart’s favorite of the pieces she was modeling that day. The feature that gives this creation the “Wow” factor is the collar. A black thick neck piece that has intricate chains falling off the back and at the end is what else? Feathers of course! 74 | Second Style Magazine

5.Next stop was over to InStyle. The team at InStyle never disappoints and this was true once again at the production of the Baiastice Attitude show. A presentation Showcasing the designs of Sissy Pessoa, and featuring skins by J&J Skins, and shoes by Stiletto Moody. The Creamy Vicius, worn by Anessa Stine is both Funky and chic. Maybe not what you’d wear while doing a grocery run, but hey who buys groceries in Second Life™ anyway? The dress features numerous textures, and attention to detail. We all need more of these fun outfits for our wardrobes. 7.My last show was the InStyle Graduates show that featured Sysy Chapman’s designs. What I liked about the Irony In Orange set, modeled by Lauren Mureaux, is the sleek lines in the legs. While orange may be a typically fall color, I could imagine this outfit being perfect for a warm summer night out.

inspired after a look worn by Miss Jackson at the pre party for the 2007 Grammys. The low sexy back on this halter is perfect for showing off that summer tan, which the model, Eve Torres does quite nicely. 9.Lastly, from the InStyle Graduates, was the Tullip dress in Bordeaux, worn by Venus Petrov. The lucky attendees of the Graduates show received a midnight blue version of this dress, just for attending. Fighting lag does have its rewards. I personally found the simplicity and texturing of this dress to be very appealing. That’s all for now, I’m looking forward to seeing even more summer offerings across the runways and until next time remember as the famous personal shopper Betty Halbreich said, “If you aren’t enjoying your clothes, then you really are missing the point.”
