Fresh Faces | Erratic by Fayne Khandr

“Fashion is what you make it. It’s what makes you feel alive and confident.” Erratic Rain started creating in SL about 11 months ago. “I signed up for SL about a year ago and then learned how to design from a friend. I took some time to create the products and understanding all the dynamics... I set up my first little store about 4 months ago in the Cynful sim. I’m still very new and trying to get my foot in the door: LE.LOOK! South has helped me with that as well as many wonderful bloggers that have worn my clothing and taken fun pictures with it.” Erratic’s clothing collection is high on colour with basic staples in the club and street wear genres. “I wanted to do clothing that is fun and I can relate to.” Erratic tells me. “I love clubbing in my RL too so it just came naturally to me.” Clubbing and indeed clubwear has always been big in Second Life, but Erratic is confident she brings something new to the market with her design. “I visited several clubs in SL before I started designing and I saw mostly everyone wore black . I see clubs as poppy and vibrant where one should stand out; hence this is my attempt to bring in some freshness to this scene.” I asked Erratic about her creative process, and she confirmed she draws a lot from RL, her own wardrobe and that of her friends. In keeping with what you see on offer, it came as no surprise when she admitted a love of bright colours and a strong desire to stand out in a crowd. She also tells me something of her motivation and inspiration to keep working: “The fact that people actually buy stuff I make and show faith in my fashion is very fulfilling. The whole process from concept to actual sales is a great journey.” It isn’t all work and no play for Erratic Rain. Aside from hitting on random strangers (by her own admission!) she confesses much of her relaxation time in SL is spent clubbing and listening to music. “I frequent GOL a lot,” she says. “Sometimes I am just working in photoshop and park my avatar there, listening to music relaxes me and helps in the design process.” Erratic has proven popular already and is sure to continue expanding. We’re told to expect more colors, more fun clothes and maybe - “really really maybeee” - shoes. “They are such an arse to make…”

IN BRIEF If I weren’t talking to you right now I’d be: Dancing. My personal style is: Sometimes questionable... My favourite SL Designer: Truth Hawks, I looove his hair. A phrase I use too often is: Ahoy :P Something most people don’t know about me…: I like big butts and I cannot lie. I’m good at: Tetris. I’m not so good at: Time management. The temptation I can’t resist: Dark chocolate. In a nutshell, my philosophy is: Wear a condom!

Fashionable Furnishings By Makenzie Irling As March leads way to April the snow and cold weather start to fade into warmer days. Unfortunately for some of us it’s still snowy cold nastiness. To me nothing says cozy like a big homemade breakfast, a warm bubblebath and a comfortable spot to curl up and read a book. The newest house from NOTsoBAD is extremely versatile, great for use as a photo studio, home or a place to hang out. With some heavy modifications I created a modern and welcoming home, perfect for hiding from the remains of winter.

Style Icon Elikapeka Tiramisu by Sophia Harlow

Photography by Elikapeka Tiramisu

In the “fashion community” we read blogs, magazines, attend events and etc. so we are pretty well versed in who is who when it comes to all things fashion. Some designers push past that and reach out to residents who have never read a blog or have no idea what FashionFeedofSL is or even Plurk. I know, shocking! One of them is Elikapeka Tiramisu. Elikapeka’s first label, ETD was synonymous with hair. Not just any hair but many would say the best hair in Second Life. Sure, she made other things too - very cute clothes and great shoes but ETD was it for hair. My very first SL picture, in 2006, I am wearing ETD hair and it is only very recently that I packed it away. Many of us have/had inventories full of ETD hair - pretty much have owned every single hair ever released. Imagine now, the day we all realized that ETD was gone. Let me tell you in simple terms how it felt - it sucked. Sure we all heard the rumors about where Elika was designing or why she left...and if she was coming back. Not many knew for sure but any hair conversation always included talk of ETD. Fast forward to a few months ago - the rumor of Elika being back and re-branded to Elikatira was spreading like wild fire. The first official release had the feeds and plurk going crazy. Every other picture on Flickr was of the new hair. Since that first new release, Elikapeka Tiramisu has been releasing regularly, much the delight of many. I mean many because each release is met with the same excitement as her first release under Elikatira. Continued on page 50 > Second Style Magazine | 49

Where was she? Not sure. Did she ever really leave? Not sure. Are her designs still beautifully made and has she kept up with styles...techniques...trends? Oh, hell yes. Read on to see if she answers any of those questions (and so many more) herself. Describe yourself in 50 words or less. No cheating. Oh well, okay maybe you can cheat a little. Okay fifty words...here goes. I’m shy, anti-social and even a little awkward. But that mostly has to do with my shyness around people I don’t know. Although, once I am comfortable I can talk a person’s ear off! I am silly, but have a serious side. I try to be kind, but I am not a doormat. I am often afk and usually do so without warning. And last but not least I love Justin Timberlake! Haha. I apologize for cheating and going over 50 words. For those people who may not be familiar with your brand, please tell us a bit about Elikatira. [elikatira] (obviously stands for Elikapeka Tiramisu) is a rebrand of my previous one, ETD (which stood for Elika Tiramisu Designs). I know, I know...I’m sooo creative with names! Haha. Basically this is a brand offering the items I love to make. Mostly hair, some footwear, and sprinkles of accessories every now and again. A mistake I made with ETD was that I tried to create a wider variety of items from different categories. Now, I think focusing on one or a couple of specific types of items is best. This way I won’t spread myself too thin or get burned out trying/wanting to do a little of everything, all of the time. One thing that I learned over the years in SL is that if I don’t love doing what I do and I don’t have fun doing it, I’ll easily get burned out from forcing myself to do it. Like most of us of a certain SL age, ETD, was a huge staple in our inventory. When word spread of you leaving the grid, it broke quite a few hearts. So when you returned, you could hear the collective sigh of relief from many fans of your work. Are you willing to share why you decided to leave SL? Well, mostly for personal reasons, some of which I don’t feel comfortable discussing, sorry. BUT I can say that a lot of it was because I was feeling discouraged and burned out. I used to let a lot of things get to me, things that really don’t phase me now and looking back, I probably shouldn’t have let it get to me. But, I think the final straw was finding out that after I rebuilt my store and releasing a few new items, those said items were copy-botted (within days) and were even being distributed on the Teen Grid. To some people 50 | Second Style Magazine

that may sound like a silly reason, but at the time it really discouraged me. At that point I just felt defeated. Mind you, that was on top of previously receiving a folder with more than 30 of my hairstyles, full permissions, and “created” by someone else. It had been widely distributed by the time I got it (passed out in a few freebie groups and handed out as some sort of newbie welcome package). So, ya, that was nice. I was discouraged, defeated and to be frank I was tired of that particular battle (the copybotting). Those things on top of real life things kept me from logging in. With that said, I’m here now. With a thicker skin, a higher level of tolerance, and a clear view of the big picture of life. Very little gets to me any more. I think at some point everyone experiences things in life (real life) that helps you gain a little perspective. It helps you to tune out things you should tune out and focus on finding joy and happiness wherever you can. So that is my plan this time around. To enjoy SL the best way I know how....which is by creating. How different is the woman behind the avatar? I’m not really different, in my opinion, aside from the way my avatar looks. I *WISH* I had blue eyes in real life! Oh and my inventory (although its not as big as it used to be). When I log in Elika I am not role playing a character....I am just myself. I am just as silly, sarcastic, and geeky (at times) in SL as I am in real life. Elikapeka means Elizabeth in Hawaiian and that’s my real name, so ya...not really too much of a stretch there either. I’ve always considered Elikapeka an extension of my real life self. You are of course known for your hair, but you also make great shoes and clothes...you recently had a large footwear release...can we expect more? Maybe some clothes too? As I mentioned above (because I didn’t read ahead to see what the following questions were lol) I am pretty much going to focus on hair, footwear, and accessories only. No clothing in my future, that was the one thing I learned with ETD...I did NOT enjoy making clothes. Not even a little. And yes there will be more shoes to come. I have over a dozen started or half-way done in Maya, it’s just a matter of finishing them and uploading. Sometimes I think I have adult A.D.D because I’ll start one project and get distracted or bored with it (sometimes even frustrated) and then I’ll move onto something else or be like..... oh look! Something SHINY! Are you one of those designers that is work work work all the time, while rarely leaving your platform and only changing your outfit Continued on page 53 >

for vendor pics? Or do you take time for some SL fun? Yes, I am everything you describe in the first part of the question lol. I have a work island and I’d say 95% of my time is spent on there and I can go days without ever leaving it. The only time I leave it is to do stuff around the Elikatira island or to occasionally go shopping. I am pretty much a hermit and usually working alone on my island except for the occasional (more than welcomed) visits from Willow or Emma. I am also a mom IRL so my time in SL is limited and often times I go afk for long periods of time because of my motherly duties. So I guess I could break up my SL time like: 60% work, 35% afk, 5% shopping/ socializing (and that 5% is only on occasion). And wow!! you’ve really got me figured out....I am one of “THOSE” that don’t change their clothes very often. I also rarely have hair on nor shoes. For the most part I only change my clothes and put on hair, shoes, or jewelry when I’m about to take a picture for an ad. Sometimes I even go out in public like that. I think the worst was when I wore only the glitch layer of a dress bottom and the glitch layer for a jacket (from a different outfit by a different designer lol), no hair, no shoes, no AO....I was F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! /end sarcasm. But there are times when I’ll dress up or change my clothing just for the fun of it. What is your personal style? How does Elika dress? I am pretty casual-ish...I tend to lean toward the preppy-ish side and sort of feminine-ish (technical terms here!) like dresses and skirts. Also I’m a bit on the conservative side as far as covering up skin. I think I’m at that age (at least for me) where skin tight and short hemlines sort of scream, “trying too hard.” But that’s just for me and only in my opinion. I’m the same way in SL, for the most part. But, I am also loving the high fashion clothing coming from the various designers in SL, that we’re seeing a lot of these days! Every now and then I’ll also wear a costume, a cardboard box avatar or something totally goofy! Three stores you cannot live without? This is one of the questions I was dreading! This is really hard because I love so many stores. Since I mostly shop for skins and clothing I’ll list 3 per category muahahaha! Skins- the body co: my newest skin obsession. Tuli: Always! I have been a long time fan of Tuli’s skins. My first Tuli skin love was her Elizabeth line. Finally, LAQ: The faces are so beautiful and the skins are very affordable.

Clothing- LeLutka: I love their quality of work and detail with their prim work. Mon Tissu: Actually all things Julliette and Emma. From Tres Blah to Surf co. They can do no wrong in my book. Finally, Zaara: I am amazed at all her hand-texturing/ painting work. There are many more stores that I love to shop at and definitely more designers/content creators that I am in awe of and whom I admire. I think you need to update this question to allow for people to list their top 10 or maybe 100!! Very important question...do you kiss on the first date? Depends. Describe to us your perfect SL day. No asset server issues when uploading. Dare to dream. And new releases from my favorite designers! If you read any of my interviews, you know that I always ask a few of the same questions...one of them and my favorite is what is your life song? Please share a few lines from it too. Yes, I have read your other interviews and I have been dreading this question too, lol. In all honesty I don’t have one particular life song. I have so many favorites and with each of them I can relate it to a part of my life or a moment in my memory. Music is an integral part of my life. Its hard to convey how much I love it and how much music and lyrics, as a whole, moves me. Music, all music, is my life song! Haha. The music I listen to on repeat, at this moment in time, is all things Snow Patrol and even more recently The Civil Wars. Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars has been on repeat since their album was released....its both beautiful and haunting. Rather than sharing lines from a song (since I can’t choose) I’ll share one of my favorite quotes: “Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness” – Maya Angelou When I asked you to be our next Icon, you were shocked. You could not believe that you would be considered an Icon. It was just such a sweet and humble reaction from you. And shocking. Does it still surprise you how beloved you are? Oh my gosh YES! In fact, a little while ago I received a notecard from someone and her words made me teary-eyed (I’m a sap sometimes). It was filled with so much kindness and sincerity. I was so humbled that it left me speechless and it took me a couple of days to find the (not-so-eloquent) words to reply back to her. In all honesty I don’t think I’m anyone special...in fact, I know I’m not. I Second Style Magazine | 53

am just me and I’m just like everyone else who’s looking to get the most joy out of SL that they possibly can. I’m doing what I love to do and that’s the only way I see myself....just someone doing what they love. Care to clear up any rumors out there? Hmmm? What rumors? LOL. I’ve heard a few things, the one I can easily clear up is the one saying I died. No, I did not die.....obviously. Haha. Tell us five things about yourself that we don’t know. 1. Some people know, but some may not: I served in the US military for 9 years (the last few years were served while in SL and doing ETD stuff...those were some rough times for me). 2. I am a dork. Okay maybe most people know that lol. 3. I am addicted to nail polish. I love to paint my nails. Today they happen to be Teal!!! 4. I play the piano. 5. I have a RL job teaching cardio classes at my gym.

Wow, tough question. I don’t hope for everyone in SL to remember me, but rather the people who are part of my second life (in a small or big way). I hope they remember me as being just me, an extension of my real self. I hope they remember the fun, the silliness, the conversations, the tears, the laughs, the adventures...because I know in the end, the connections I’ve made in SL (past or present) will be what I remember the most.

In her real world tab of her profile, it states the following: “I only have one purpose and one motivation in life...to make my son’s life better”. I think that statement alone says just about everything else we need to know about Ms. Tiramisu. Welcome back, you were sorely missed. Elika, thank you for taking the time to be Second Style’s March Fashion Icon - it was our honor to have you.

How much and how do you think SL hair has changed since you first started designing? Or even since your return to making hair? Wow, hair in SL has changed exponentially... well maybe not that much but definitely 360 degrees, in my opinion. Textures and general construction have changed the most. Once upon a time ago hair used to be made up of traditional SL prims...i.e. the torus, cylinder or other basic shapes. When I first started there wasn’t even flexi! I’ve also noticed a trend of styles and textures leaning more toward realism and more of a natural look....which I find myself leaning toward too or at least trying. I think just like every other aspect of SL, hair is evolving and improving....and will continue to do so as long as SL is around. Is Elikatira going to pull any more surprises? What do you hope to see your brand grow to? Surprises? No, not that I am aware of. My focus for the immediate future is just to continue to grow, improve, and evolve. I hope to see my brand become a direct representation of me and everything I love to create in SL. I hope to become a good place to go to get hair, shoes, and accessories. Dog or cat person? Haha I love these random questions. Dog most definitely. When SL “closes” it’s doors or when your time on the grid is done...what do you hope to be remembered for? 54 | Second Style Magazine

Spring Into Flats By Alicia Chenaux

The hot trend in footwear for this spring makes me and my feet totally happy. Flats! I am a big lover of flat shoes because I think they’re incredibly versatile. They work with almost any outfit you can come up with, whether you want to be casual with capris and a tee, or a little more dressed up with a pretty sundress and a hat. To help you with your shoe needs, here are four of my favorite flats! Oyakin is not the first place I’d think to go for shoes, but their Suede Flats are simply adorable. The clothing at Oyakin is very soft, and looks worn in, and the shoes very much match the clothing. These are your favorite flats that you throw on to run out and about in. They’re not fancy, but they are utterly comfortable, and you can’t live without them.

Suede Flats [3 in the set], $270L

Francoise Flats, $250L

For flats with a little more sophistication, you don’t have to look any further than Shiny Things! The Francoise flats are beautifully sculpted and textured, just like you would expect from this shoe store. The big diagonal strap and buckle work well with a variety of clothing, like tailored pants or a slim skirt. If you’re looking for a pair that are a little plainer, but still with a feminine touch, you will love the Audrei flats by Ingenue. They are simple, and simply pretty, with the thin bow on the tops. Ingenue is best known for lovely vintage inspired clothing, but as you can see, the shoes are something you shouldn’t miss out on. If you love flats, but still need a little bit of a heel, then the Little Diva flats from G Field are definitely for you. These lovely shoes have a huge charming flower on top, and a heel that gives you just a little bit of height. They come in all kinds of colors, and are just beautiful quality.
