During my freshman year at Cazenovia College, I developed an academic mindset. I decided to build a strong resume because I knew that it was the key to success. For my first work study position, I was a Fashion Department Assistant for Karen Steen at south campus. My daily tasks consisted of organizing the fabric closet, staffing open house events, and styling mannequins. It was a wonderful experience. Soon after, I got my first internship position at Leota, a dress company which produces dresses for Nordstrom in Brooklyn. I was able to observe buyers and sales in the showroom. I also organized and managed inventory, and styled a model for the photo shoot. Overall, this internship allowed me to develop a clearer understanding of what goes on behind the scenes. I also discovered that things we learn in class are actually used in our field of study (I recognized a few key terms from my basic textiles class).

During the fall semester of my junior year, I interned at Lillie Bean Inc. located here in Cazenovia. I did a lot of visual merchandising with the store windows as well as floor sets. I also assisted customers with garment selections within the boutique. I gained a tremendous amount of interpersonal communication skills and merchandising skills. This was another great opportunity which I will forever cherish. While I was interning, I also started developing my own fashion styling portfolio, utilizing the equipment that we have here at Caz. I had a photographer (Tahiry Fernandez) and three models (Chastidy Mejia, Kylee John, and Austin Stone), who were nice enough to help me out. The first shoot was wardrobe styling, the second was shopping online to match each of the models’ style, and lastly, shopping at thrift stores. At the end of the fall 2014 semester, I contacted ELLE Magazine as well as six other major magazine companies and mailed them my portfolio, business card, cover letter, and five of the best photos from my portfolio. ELLE magazine contacted me, and I went in for an interview. Two weeks later, I landed the internship which will begin May 11 this summer! I will be an assistant for one of the fashion editors. My daily tasks will consist of running errands, attending photo shoots, and being present at fashion shows and events. It’s mind blowing to think I have such a great opportunity! I honestly believe that every experience leads to the next. Due to my first two local internships and fashion-related experiences, I was able to land this internship with ELLE Magazine. I now realize that in order to get a job after college, you must market yourself while you are still in school. It is proven that internships are the key to getting a job! We are happy to introduce our new Project REACH work studies! Hello, my name is Lisa Balkissoon and I study Environmental Biology and minor in Psychology at Cazenovia College. I chose Environmental Biology as a major because I love the world I live in. One day, I hope to make a difference by becoming a pollution scientist! Also, I love studying wildlife and botany. During my leisure time, I love to get ahead on my school work, participate in club activities, go to the gym, hang out with friends and read. It is my pleasure to be a part of the Project REACH community because of the many resources they have available to make my college experience worthwhile.

***************** Hello, my name is Kara Locey. I am a junior from Canton, NY majoring in Criminal Justice/Homeland Security with minors in PreLaw and Psychology. My dream job is to become a New York State Trooper in the K-9 unit. I am an active member of Project REACH and have served as a Peer Mentor for the past two years, so I am very excited to have the Project REACH work study position. I have also worked for phonathon for the past three years and have had multiple work study positions. Besides school and work, I play soccer, which is my favorite sport. I am also a member of the Criminal Justice Club and three different honor societies. I enjoy doing volunteer work, such as working at Caz Cares and handing out Veterans Day cards to veterans in the VA hospital. I fell in love with Caz the moment I got here and haven’t stopped loving it yet! I am so thankful for all the great opportunities I have had here, such as traveling to New York City for a class trip, and I really enjoy the small town welcoming feel that Caz has to offer.
