Where were you? I was in kindergarten on September 11, 2001. No, really. I was substitute teaching and was scheduled for a half-day at a local elementary school. I spent the morning doing kindergarten stuff — nothing out of the ordinary. My car was in the shop and my dad was picking me up, so when I left, I stopped at Michelle Laird DIALS the main office to let the secretary know that Editor/publisher I’d probably head outside to see if he was parked and waiting, and if he wasn’t, I’d need to be buzzed back in. (Because of Columbine a couple years earlier, the doors were all locked.) Behind her, I could see a small TV, and on its screen, a plume of black smoke. Then they cut back to the usual morning anchors. I remember thinking it was strange that the morning TV people were still on and it was almost lunch time. I asked what had happened and she told me a plane had flown into a building in New York. I went outside and a parent arriving at the school asked me if I knew the schools were all on lockdown because America had been attacked. Time seemed to stand still. When my dad finally arrived, I asked if he knew what was going on. He told me the Twin Towers in New York were “gone.” I didn’t understand what he meant. I spent that afternoon watching the events of the day unfold over and over again on TV. It was and still is hard for me to fathom the fact I had no idea anything had happened until it was all over. In retrospect, it’s probably good, because the journalist in me almost certainly wouldn’t have been able to proceed with normal kindergarten stuff knowing what I now know. . Ten years ago, I didn’t have a cell phone and none of us had social media tools like Facebook or Twitter. My feeds have been full of posts about how differently the coverage of 9-11 would have unfolded if we had. (I follow a lot of journalists.) In a few minutes, we’ll post an album of photos from Logansport’s “Day of Remembrance” and ask our Facebook fans to share their thoughts. While my plans to send resumes to New York City in mid-September 2001 may have changed, it’s days like today that make me grateful that I’m able to document what goes on outside of the spotlight of the national news media and proud to be a part of this community.

The Depot Are you ready? September is National Preparedness Month and the Cass County Chapter of the American Red Cross is one of the organizations encouraging families, businesses, schools and organizations to be better prepared for the next emergency or disaster. FEMA’s Ready Campaign website, ready. gov, offers additional information including preparedness tips for pet owners, military families and people with disabilities, in addition to preparedness tips for a wide range of specific emergencies. “We must all do what we can to prepare our families and make our communities ready for the next emergency,” said Rocky Buffum, executive director. “Everyone can take three key action steps to get started: build a kit, make a plan and be informed.”

According to the Red Cross, emergency kits should include enough supplies for at least three days, in case you have to evacuate, in addition to: • Water (one gallon per person, per day), • Non-perishable food • A flashlight • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio, • Extra batteries • First aid kit, • 7-day supply of medications, • Multipurpose tool • Sanitation and personal hygiene items • Copies of important personal documents

OUR COMMUNITY

New Goals

Last spring, the Logansport Community School Corporation agreed to partner with the Logansport Parks Department to add additional safety surfacing to the playground and swingset, and to install new basketball goals to the nearby court at Fairview Park. LCSC paid for the materials & equipment, and the Parks Department installed them. This

work was completed in early September. “We are so pleased to be able to share this improvement with the Fairview School,” said parks administrator Jan Fawley. This kind of partnership is invaluable to both of our organizations – we both do a better job of serving the families and youth of our community when we put our resources together.”

Local agencies offer planning guide for special events The Cass County Chapter of the American Red Cross has partnered with the Cass County Emergency Management Agency to prepare a planning guide that can be used for festivals and local special events.
