I learn so many interesting things about our community hosting “Talk of the Town.” It’s a one-hour radio show that airs from 8-9 a.m. weekdays on 1230 WSAL. Some of the people I’ve talked to in the last month: • The Rushes, a family who adopted a little girl from China and shared their story with listeners. Their daughter, Leah Grace, has some special needs and will be having surgery a couple of days after a benefit fundraiser the Logansport Michelle Laird DIALS Mall is organizing on Oct. 26; Editor/publisher • The Lucerne Lions Club , which is holding the inaugural “Running with the Lions 5K” the first weekend in November. DId you know that the Lions Club provides street lights and other necessities for the community of Lucerne? • The Cass County INFO is a free, monthly newspaper Roosters, who’ll be serving Cass County, Indiana and holding the “Salute the surrounding areas. • The Cass County Family Y, which has a new executive director and some great new programming happening — this month they’ll have a Haunted House at the big old house on the corner of 10th and Market. I didn’t know the Y owned it but what a fantastic use for that property. And speaking of Halloween, there are all kinds of events posted on CassCountyCalendar.com — and people started submitting them earlier than ever before! Seems like this community calendar thing might be catching on! Back to the Y though, one other thing I didn’t know is that they’ll be offering “Snow Day Camps” whenever school is closed. SEE PAGE 7

New recycling dropoff site near Industrial Park The Cass County Solid Waste Management District has announced that there are now five roll off recycling containers located throughout the county. The new location is at the junction of 350S/50E, or behind the Industrial Park. This is about a mile from the landfill, and is designed to provide a recycling opportunity for people who had been taking their recyclables to the containers at Oak Ridge. This new location will be for comingled recycling, just like

the others. This simply means that paper, plastics, bottles and cans are placed in one container. They will be separated when they get to the recycling center. The other four roll off recycling containers are located at the 4H Fairgrounds, at Pioneer Elementary in Royal Center, behind the Christian Church in Walton and at the wastewater treatment plant in Galveston. If you have any questions, contact the Solid Waste District Office at 574-732-9253.

Teams from Logansport Memorial Hospital, Ivy Tech, the Logansport Police Department and Logansport Fire Department participated in the first-ever “Tour de Trike” on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at the Ivy Tech campus. The event raised funds for United Way of Cass County, which is working toward a $650,000 campaign goal for 2013.

This post was originally published on turn4media.com, where Matthew Paul writes about racing. Seriously.

It was Tuesday, October 1. My day started at 4:15a.m..... After hitting the snooze button a half dozen times, I crawled out of bed to get dressed and head out for my daily trek to work. Also, by “trek” I mean “walk”. I live about a mile from the Mid America Radio Studios where I host my morning show on Mix 102, so I hoof it most mornings. The sky PHOTOS BY PHILL DIALS It was a packed house inside Plaza Pavilion 1a at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Multicolored accent lighting shone up the walls that were covered in black curtains...Two models, one blonde and one brunette sporting IndyCar short shirts, greeted us at the door. Music was playing in the background...A bizarre mix of mainly rock and funk, both new and old wafted from the speakers. In the left corner just off the stage, an IndyCar sat draped with a black covering waiting to be unveiled...It all felt bizarrely surreal. A closer look around the room, and you could easily spot the major players...Tony Kanaan, Graham Rahal, Connor Daly, Derrick Daly, Bobby Rahal, Mark Miles, Doug Boles, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard...They were all there for one thing...To announce the newly formed Grand Prix of Indianapolis... The creation of this race, as was stated in the beginning of the presentation, stemmed from

the original designers of the Speedway and their imagining of a road course in the middle of the oval. Of course, this came to fruition with Formula One racing at IMS in 2000, and then again in 2011 when 2 time Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon did the very first IndyCar testing at the IMS road course. Doug Boles recalls when Dan did the testing... “I think I’d be remiss if I didn’t say in fall of 2011 our two time Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon had an opportunity to be the first IndyCar to run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (road course), and in between one of those runs I had an opportunity to talk to him in pit area, and he kind of grabbed me by the collar, and he said, ‘Doug, we’ve got to run here.’ We are doing this not only for fans, but we’re doing this - I think it’ll be great for Dan Wheldon, and he’s excited about this day, as well.” So the gears are in motion... The inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis is now set for May

was clear and the stars were out The air was crisp with the oncoming coolness of fall. As I sauntered along, I rounded a corner on Melbourne Avenue, caught some uneven pavement, and BAM...I hit the ground. Walking can be hard sometimes...Luckily, there were no cars around to run over my

10, 2014. From the outset, the presenters hammered home the notion of making this a family-friendly, festival type of atmosphere for the new race. Plus, there will be new bleachers installed, spectator mounds, and cheaper tickets to make it possible. Mark Miles explains... “A family of four, two adults, two children 12 and under, will be able to come out for the race for $50. So we’re determined to make it something that everybody who’s interested has the opportunity to come out and see.” In a nutshell what they’re looking to do is build excitement for the month of May. Starting with the road race and culminating with the 500. Personally, I love it and I think they’re on the right track...(see what I did there?) There’s no question that since the IRL/CART split in 1996, interest in the 500 and the IZOD IndyCar Series has been.... well, stagnant. However, rather than sit and

crumpled body lying in the street, so I got up, brushed myself off, and went on my merry way. That’s how my day went...From falling down in the street at 5am, to sitting in an historic press conference directly behind Bobby Rahal at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway....Or, you know...a normal Tuesday...

— Matthew Paul Mix 102 Morning Guy/ Director of Operations WLHM/WSAL/WHZR

say to themselves “Well, we’ve always done the month of May this way and we’re not gonna change!” The powers-that-be instead looked at the month of May and thought “What can we do that would generate interest, and really elevate what IndyCar racing is all about?” And then...BAM! A new race at the GREATEST RACETRACK in the WORLD is born. I sometimes wish everyone thought like that. Instead, we resist change. We don’t like the unknown..and more often than not, we get downright grumpy about it. Being a lifelong Hoosier, I understand that the stature and tradition of the 500 isn’t something to scoff at. Sometimes, like Sheryl Crow once said, “A change will do you good...” Is it May yet?

FROM PAGE 2 So with the Y’s “Snow Day Camps,” parents needing daycare options for their kids when school is cancelled may want to keep that in mind. In addition to Talk of the Town, Matthew Paul and I also host “The Sunday Show” which airs Sunday mornings on Mix 102 (7 a.m.) and Hoosier Country 103.7 (9 a.m.). We get to spend 15 minutes talking with a guest each week about something local — it’s always so inspiring to hear about all the amazing efforts that people are making to improve our community. Lucas Beach is one such person — he’s a Cass County native who’s now the superintendent of France Park and last year. He’s implemented all kinds of cool programming, including what I’m sure is the state’s least expensive ride on a zip line that’s already nearly paid for itself after just three months of operation. How cool is that? So until next month, there are lots of ways to find out what’s happening in our community. When people tell you there’s nothing to do, send them my way. :)
